With eyes wide with anticipation the little fill couldn't tear her eyes away from the tiny, hatching egg. No, she wouldn't tear her eyes away. While she had been one hundred percent convinced it was a dragon, as the little wonder kept hatching she began to rethink her initial assumption. Why, if she didn't know any better it was a little bird...and not a dragon as she was sure when the little thing opened its mouth there was no teeth in that beak.
A baby bird?
No....such a cool thing couldn't be just a bird.
"Its not a Dragon..." She spoke, her face contorting for a minute as she scanned her memories for every cool tale she'd heard. Then...she got it. The brilliant hues of colour on its feathers could only mean one thing. Looking up with sparkling eyes she breathed out to her best friend in the world. "Its a Phoenix....mystical bird of fire..."
Meridah was absolutely sure now.
The small songbird finally burst from its egg, flopping against the warmth of Voda as it tried to find some kind of balance. Looking up with wide, brimming eyes the little bird began to chirrup and tweet. "Pa....pa...?" It cheeped at Voda; ruffling its wet little wings.
Immediately a wide smile cracked on her face, what an adorable little Phoenix they had! But wait....she'd never seen a phoenix before....did this mean it was abandoned? Her smile dropped a minute at the realization that even though it was sure cute when it had called Voda his papa....how could they say for sure it even had a daddy that wanted it? What if....it was just like Voda, and had no parents to call his own? Sure...they were just foals themselves - but a deep sense of right was calling to her. How could she watch another close to her grow up with no parents to call their own? She could only help voda so much since he needed to be by the sea...but this little bird?
Looking up at her friend with a hard gaze in her eyes, hints of desperation could be seen as her emotions were flaring. "Voda....I don't think he has a place to go....like you." It was clear the subject made her upset, but it didn't stop her resolve. "What if we were its parents! Im sure we can do it!" Looking back down to the tiny bird between them; full of hopes and promise...she felt a gentle smile recoil on her face. "We might not be the best, at our age....but i'm sure it'll be so much better off than if it was going to be left alone...."

His bright friend, so versed in the ways of the land-dwellers, puzzled it out first. As she breathed the answer, the truth of what this little creature was, his eyes grew wide in wonder... then his brow furrowed slightly in puzzlement, but luckily she explained. Mystical he understood, and it did seem like a bird now that it was fully hatched, but bird of fire? Well, that explained the shell.
Tales of knights and dragons had reached his little ears, but he had not yet heard tales of the Phoenix...
He felt a little thunk against his side, and looked down fondly just in time to see the bird cheep up at him and ruffle its adorable wings. Aww, such a little.... what? Did... had it said... Papa?
He stared. Just... stared, then looked back at Meridah as she began to speak in earnest. Though his own thoughts had been traveling along a similar path, he hadn't really considered their ability to succeed at such a tender age. But, what she said was true, and even if its parents some day did return (a little pain twisted at his heart at the thought, but he shook it off) then... then surely they'd be grateful that someone had thought to look after their little one! Besides, if the little Phoenix needed something they could not offer, surely Meridah's family could provide whatever it might be? He wondered vaguely what birds of fire ate, and glanced curiously at a nearby piece of wood.
Blinking suddenly, his golden gaze returned to the wet little bird between them. "Yeah, we can do it... " If you want me, little one... i'll be your Papa. He little chest swelled a little, as he felt the weight of responsibility and the thrill of a new challenge course through him. We'll be your.... parents.
No matter what, through storms and inner turmoil, they'd be there. Protecting, caring, loving... feeding. He glanced at the wood again. Whatever little Phoenix might need, in this big wide world. Golden eyes sought brown once more. We can do it.

The little bird let another series of chirrups against the storm; although the winds were a little scary up above the treetops she was mighty warm against the two foals. While she may have not known what was going on aside from very basic needs of food, heat and protection, her stomach growled gently as slowly her little feathers began to dry. Letting out a little cry in hunger she looked up to her two parents excitingly.
Meridah had been waiting for an answer from the thoughtful expression of her friend, and when he'd said it, confirming her own desires to help in any way she could. "Wonderful!" She exclaimed happily, leaning forward and nuzzling her head against his back. Hey, if they'd survived her nearly drowning, a skinwalker....they could for sure look after a little baby bird. "I guess that makes me Mama then hey?" She giggled and leaned her head down, looking eye to eye with the little Phoenix. "Hey little thing, i'm Mama!"
Oh wait...thats what she was forgetting!
"You know...I think its a little girl Phoenix! And she needs a name!" Well, they couldn't call it little bird forever...and although she began to think - Meridah wasn't super creative in thinking of a name. It just never...occurred to her to be thinking of such things. "Can you think of anything, Voda?" She asked, perhaps he had some ideas.
Plus....they would probably have to feed her soon.
What did they eat? She knew when she was little she drank milk....but she'd never really seen baby birds before. Adult birds ate worms and bugs....so what did they feed their babies? Was it different for Phoenix's?
Although she was sure it was false, she fantasized how cool it would be if it ate fire or something! Wouldn't that have been cool to see.

No one could chose the family they were born to, but the little colt now knew that sometimes a new family could be created- from friendship, eternal vows, and a little one in need. Being a Papa was surely a scary thing. Having someone rely on you so completely, for sustenance and shelter and.... survival. But, that's what Mamas are for, right? Two parents, working together, to care for a little soul. Partnership.
He smiled and then grinned. Together, forever!
Little girl? He squinted dubiously at the little creature, wondering how instinct or something else could have imbued Meridah with such knowledge- then wondering if being a Mama for someone in need automatically meant things... important things... were just known. A name? He nodded slowly; everyone needed a name. It was how things were called, referred to, and sometimes names were a bit of an omen for what was to come. Names were important, for communication and to give each being something to proclaim as Me.
But.... well.... he looked down at the chirping Phoenix. Didn't... she... already have a name? "Phoenix sounds nice." The more it dried, the more it looked like a normal baby bird- except for the vibrant color. He wondered at what mystical properties the feathers might contain... or was it something special inside that made Phoenix worthy of wonder?
His legs were beginning to get stiff, and he glanced outside their tree-shelter at the soaking ground. The rain had churned up the top layer of soil, creating little puddles in deeper areas and even smaller pools where their hooves had made the slightest impression in the soft earth. He remembered, then, coming up onto land after a heavy rain and seeing little squirmy pinkish things wriggling around on the ground. He had avoided stepping on the long tube-like things, but he'd seen a bird swoop down and gobble one up eagerly. Then many more birds flocked towards the exposed creatures, and Voda had left the feathered ones to their meal. He tilted his head and glanced back at Meridah. Predators had pointy teeth, plant-eaters had rounded teeth, and baby Phoenix.... had no teeth at all. "How do Phoenixes... eat?"

Tilting her head a bit to the right the little filly scrutinized some more about the name of this little bird - their little bird. Phoenix was indeed a lovely and well, very fitting name if you took it literally. Even as the rain came down, Meridah was relieved to be in the company of Voda and Phoenix; how bored would she be sitting at home with her parents and siblings and missing all this action!
Her eyes slowly wandered to the colt beside her, noting he was looking off at something as she too followed his visual lead. Puddles were forming all over the drenched earth, and the little filly was thankful it was so wet out that it allowed her dear friend to remain with her.
At this rate, it was going to be a long night if the rain kept coming like this; and it was no state to bring a baby bird out into that kind of weather.
Luckily though, hatchling Phoenix let go of her hungry chirps and with a mighty yawn felt her eyes droop before nestling in between the two foals and promptly falling fast asleep like all newborns did. With a warm smile Meridah let a soft chuckle escape before catching Voda's gaze. "We'll make it work. Might need to ask someone in the morning but it looks like we are alright for the time being..." Perhaps that was a sign everything would be okay...that they were blessed with not having to feed a baby bird right at this moment and she chose to go to sleep. "We'll have to bug hunt in the morning though...
Yet, that was in the morning, and it was now steadily getting later and later. With a yawn of her own she found her own head lowering to rest against Voda. Besides, she knew as a daring duo, the pair of them could accomplish anything they put their minds to. Raising a baby bird included.
But....that could wait till the morn, as with a yawned, drawn out 'Night...' Meridah slipped into slumber.
