Jess's face fell. "You're joking me. You're bloody kidding. Me?" She thought about it for minute and then snatched it from Madame Pomfrey, pushing her out of the room. A few minutes later, she opened the door again, looking about to cry.

It was a look that Madame Pomfrey had seen often enough to recognize, and she offered her both arms. "Now, we've seen enough of these cases to have some experience in what to do. I can take care of your morningsickness right away; it won't be a problem. We can inform your parents, if you would like." Madame Pomfrey sighed gently. It would do no good to say any of this now. Jess was still trembling, and Madame Pomfrey could tell that the shock needed to register.

Jess shook her head and took a seat on her bed again, forcing herself to look away from Peter. "Don't tell them, they'll just cut me off." She looked down at her already slightly swollen stomach and frowned. "My figure..."

Madame Pomfrey looked at the young girl reproachfully. "Yes, well," she said curtly. But then she had to remind herself to be kind again. "And it's school policy that your parents be informed. Who does it, however, is up to you."

Jess sighed. "I'll owl them tonight." Of course, she had no real intention of doing so, but it would keep the nurse from doing anything further. Almost instinctively, she placed her hand on her stomach and shook her head. "What am I supposed to do now?"

"There's paperwork in my office," said Madame Pomfrey. "And you have decisions to make. I'll excuse you from class, if you would like. You are required to have a meeting with your Head of House at some time this week."

Jess shut her eyes tight for a moment, running through the list of guys she had been with in the past few months. The test, which was much more advanced and accurate than a muggle one, indicated that she was almost 16 weeks along. Luckily for her, she had done many naughty things, but she had somehow managed to maintain celibacy with anyone but Peter. She looked up at Madam Pomfrey, looking rather defeated. "I'll fill it out in a minute. Can I talk with Peter alone first?"

Madame Pomfrey nodded. "Certainly. I'll be in my office."
Peter looked at his girlfriend curiously. "Are you feeling better?" he asked, anxious.

Jess gulped and stood up, trembling as she laid down next to him and placed his arms around her body so she could get closer to him. "Peter...we're in a bit of a sticky wicket."

Peter looked at her, perplexed, trying to read her expression. "Go on, then. What's happened?" he asked, scooting over so she had more room, and slipping his own arms around Jess.

Jess gulped, trying to think of the right words. "Well...well you know that one night..." She took a deep breath, feeling nauseous again. "That night after you had detention?"

Ahh. That night. "How could I forget?" he grinned, trying to lighten the mood a bit. Really, he had no idea what was coming. He leaned over a bit and kissed Jess's collarbone. "What's that got to do with anything, anyways? It was ages ago."

Jess shuddered a bit at Peter's kiss, feeling very scared right now. "Well...well, something happened." Biting on her bottom lip, she took his hand and placed it on her lower abdomen, right where she had the makings of a noticeable bump. "Something big."

It took Peter a long while to register this. He stared at his hand on her stomach absently until he noticed the slight swell. Moments passed, and he looked at Jess. He felt the warmth drain out of his limbs slowly, and realized that he was numb. "You...you don't mean..."

Jess looked at him, her eyes already filled with tears. "I'm sorry..." She wiped the tears from her eyes, the full impact of what was going on finally hitting her, causing her to lose her voice momentarily until all she could say was: "I'm pregnant."
