"I'm guessing it'll be over when we all die and therefore wake up-----after all, this is probably some horrid dream." He grinned, leading her along with the slow beat. "Don't apologize, dear lady. Worse has come from most mouths."

I raised an eyebrow. "When we die, you say? Well...one very long ball doesn't sound too bad," I joked. "I'm only kidding. I'd rather spend a bit more time outside...and I wonder when our host will show themselves. They're a bit rude, don't you think, leaving us all to figure this out?" I shrugged. "Or perhaps it's all just a test of some sort. One of my tutors always gave me tests, riddles of all sorts. Annoyed me to death."

"Well, if this is a test, the instructor should know; I'm not one to sit pretty and be tested." Ren said, a smile pulling the corners of his lips upwards in a dangerous grin. "I'd rather not be stuck in the same place, even should I be surrounded by beauty such as this," he said, with a small sigh. "I'd miss the ugly in the world after some time, wouldn't you?"

"The term ugly only expresses things in which we cannot see the beauty that lies there," I agreed, twirling in a small circle as the music demanded, then catching his hand once more, joining him again in the dance steps. "Beauty is worth nothing without something to call ugly. And the world is worth nothing if people can't satisfy themselves by teasing the ugly. It's crude to say, but ugliness makes the world go round. People would argue and replace the term 'ugly' with 'love' or 'respect' or 'trust', but people more often become self-satisfied with bullying those who are less fortunate in matters they can't control." I blinked. "Wow. I just confused myself. A little. Argh."

"Makes sense to me," Ren said. "Unfortunately, I've yet to see anything I would consider ugly here.There's no contrast to the beauty, making this a dream." Suddenly the music changed pace, causing Ren to instinctively slow down, then speed up to match the tempo, leading Gwen with his pattern.

I pursed my lips. "I agree." I was jostled a bit by his sudden changing in pace, but I didn't mention it. "This seems like a dream, but...how can it be? I mean, I know a bunch of people here don't know how they got there...but I was personally invited. Unless that was part of the dream, too?"

"I'm still convinced that my entire life was a dream, that I'm in a coma somewhere," he said, nonchalantly. "Though I know that's false, that only this could possibly be a dream----- maybe you've met us all, in a past life?" Ren was suddenly being swarmed by theories---no, hopes---that part of what had happened in the past month or so had been part of some messed up dream.

I smiled uncertainly. "I have a feeling you know more of the universe in your Detroit than my Dumnonia ever will. I'm confused, yet I sort of understand. A past life, you say? Then maybe we're all dead and this is our Heaven. Or our h**l," I added thoughtfully.

"Or purgatory, if you wanted to go by the catholic faith," Ren said, smirking. "Either way, it'll surely end eventually-----we can't dance forever, after all." Ren kept the fact that he was from centuries in the future hidden from her. "We're very, uh, advanced, you could say."

I grinned. "The Romans were more advanced than us, too, in the ways of technology, but not in the ways of barbarism. Men and women and children slaughtered without even letting them beg for mercy." I well remembered the raid. "And, yes, I suppose we can't dance forever. And I'm not Catholic. I'm pagan. You know--druids, magic, gods, goddesses--surely you have druids, don't you?"

Ren snorted. "Druids died out for the most part, now everyone's either pagan or christian as in christian or not christian," he explained. "I'm an atheist, I suppose you could say. I'd much rather rot in the ground than deal with angels and demons and more war." He grinned. "As far as barbarism goes, we've slaughtered two entire cities just to see what would happen. Nagasaki, Japan, and I forget the other." He spun her as the music demanded of him.

"An atheist? Interesting. We've had a couple of those in Dumnonia in the last few years. They were deemed mad and burned at the stake." I grinned brightly. "But I had no part in that, so don't fear me--I won't burn you. I find the whole charade of keeping up with the gods' names and powers kind of difficult and pointless, myself, but I have to set an example for the kingdom if I'm to become queen one day." I shrugged. "Where's Japan? Is it across the vast ocean?"

"Eh, my ancestors burned their own kind out of paranoia, I'm really not too worried about it," Ren said, shrugging. "Japan is..... Well, it's by China, if you're familiar with where that is." He grinned. "What's across the vast ocean, my dear woman, would be Detroit."
