I happened to tell a friend ov the whole 'spelt' spelled issue and she decided to look it up. Spelt is in fact a word. It is chiefly british pessed and passed participle of spell. She got this from Merriam-Webster online dictionary. So please don't interupt a discussion just to correct my horrible spelling. I'm not from england but that's not the point. Arlan17 is right spelt does not show up underlined on gaia for me either.

Now that the 'spelt' thing is settled back to the topic:
This question came up in a class discussion about religion. What is the difference, to you, between religion and superstition (e.i. rituals before a big event or some kind of ritual like that)?

Sometimes it's hard to say. Thinks like avoiding cracks on the sidewalk or throwing a pinch of salt over your shoulder after spilling it are superstitons. Many religions have rituals in them though, even Christianity has rituals. Take mass for example, it follows a certain structure every time. All a ritual is is a certain way of doing things and worshiping. Even in pagan rituals for the sabbots there is a structure to how thingare done and in which order. Superstitions are beliefs that something bad will happen if you do a certain thing or during a certain time. Religion is more a set of beliefs that bring you closer to god and help you to be a better person. Or at least that is how I look at it.

That's a really good point. Superstision being a belief that something bad will happen if you don't or do do something and religion being beliefs that bring a person closer to their god.
I usually call superstision a human means of gratification for an event and religion the absolute truth. I don't think I made any sence with that statement...
Anyway, let's see if anyone else answers the question.

Personaly I do not believe in superstition.. I have habits like putting on some of my bracelets with the words facing a certain way, or in a certain order..but i think thats more like....compulsive or w/e..but i think superstition is something a little off of the track of religion, i think it something that just gives the person some more confidence hence making them personaly do better at the task, so they start believing that if they do that certain thing god helps them. thats wut i think.

Okay,I know there hasnt been a post in here in a loooong time but I am gonna post anyways.
I am a Wiccan and I was looking at what they had on wikipedia about the religion and I found this interesting. George W. Bush stated "I don't think witchcraft is a religion. I would hope the military officials would take a second look at the decision they made" Nevertheless, Wiccans can still become the object of stigma in America, and many remain secretive about their beliefs. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs has not approved use of the pentacle in military cemeteries, although symbols of many other religions are permitted. This policy came under renewed attack when Sgt. Patrick Stewart, a Wiccan soldier, was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005. His widow has pressed for the inclusion of a pentacle to memorialise him at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery Americans United for Separation of Church and State gave the Department of Veteran's Affairs 30 days from June 7, 2006 in which to respond to the request or face litigation, and in September 2006 state officials ruled that the symbol could be used, concluding that state veterans' cemetaries were not under federal authority. When I readthat I was shocked.I knew that people still thought witchcraft was evil or was centered around the devil,But the goverment not letting pentacles be part of a soldiers funerals till this year! It's just wrong! It is like saying a cross cant be used, and I know ment people wouldnt stand for that. So I just want to knoiw what others think. If you want to read the artical go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicca#United_States

I find that very odd. As far as I know Wicca is not witchcraft. Maybe the opinions over symbols in cemitaries hadn't come up in an official manner such as your story. None the less, I agree with you, one should be able to put whatever memorial one wants on one's grave.

I am finaly back..although it sems not many people have kept this thread alive. which bothers me. I had hoped enough people would be here and have enough opinions, but I guess I was wrong. All well. There is nothing I have an opinion about thats been said since i was gone. Hopefuly someone will say or ask something, that has a decent responce from somebody.

It is sad how discusion threads die after a while, but only a few people actually like to post in these kinds of threads or few actually have opinions.
Although one topic that occurs to me is the degrading quality of movies. As our ability to do computer generated imaging (CGI) the quality of movies seem to drop. Look at the movie Madagascar, that thing was cheesely animated and was painful to watch. Some people think it is funny, but personally I now hate the song the lemurs sing in that abomination of modern culture.
Whatever happened to the good old Disney style animated movies. I personally loved the movie The Lion King and not a single movie I've seen has topped it. It may be because I dabble in animation myself, but I really like the 'emotion' of 2D animated movies.
I'm ranting now and I know the reason there are very few 2D animated movies now is because it is cheaper to CGI something than to pay people to draw pictures, but the US is rich enough.
