I have to agree with both of you. I agree with Vale, they were just damned cute when they were little 3nodding , but overall that story update was just crap. I haven't a basis of comparison (having only been on for 3 months) and I can still say it is. It was cliched, boring, shallow, and pointless. Santa was supposed to be driven by his hatred for Jack but he'll stop when a 'masked figure' drops from the sky and says "Gaia does not need a holiday, it needs... a hero."?!? Does that sound 'driven by hatred' to you? scream Everything's all hunky dory now? What kind of crap line is that anyway? Bloody Hell stare ...
Of course that's just my opinion. If you enjoyed it Vale that's good for you, at least you're getting something out of it (well I like to rant so I guess we both are). heart
That having been said, is there a way to read old storyline updates? I heard that the whole Gambino arc was very well done. *hopes Gino isn't straight* xd

Oh and I downloaded the movie, but it doesn't have subtitles. It's weird because the subtitles are in another file so I've tried like 50 billion times to encode them myself, but alas my labours have yet to bear fruit. xp
It looks sooooooo well done though I wanna see it >.<

Vale Kinomoto Oh, Ariella, obviously I've seen the movie *points up to one post* Since I have it. After LONG, LONG, LONG deliberations with a friend and I finding every possible scrap of evidence, not that I could tell you it all now because I forgot to write it down, we've come to the conclusion that it's a sequel where the majority of the people have their memory erased, by Akio presumably, and that Anthy came back because she couldn't find Utena, who eventually wandered back to Ohtori. It's really hard to explain, you just have to watch the movie to understand what I mean. It's actually not bad in English, the voices seem to fit a bit better than the voices in Japanese. Anyways, just, go watch it >.< Even though, like the series, it leaves more questions at the end than answers, sadly. I didn't think of it as sequel at all personally. To me it was just the entire series briefly recapped on the main highlights, with a darker and more mature spin on things. Things were protrayed differently, and the ending was more definite. I really enjoyed the fluidity and elegance, especially the music score. Choked with a lot of symbolism I'm still scratching my head over, but I liked it. I know a lot of Utena fans didn't. The elevator scene had me a little teary eyed...but it was just dust...really...XD

Now if I could only figure out how to encode the damn thing with subtitles so I could actually watch it.... stressed

See, originally most people thought that, but when I went back and looked at the series *having seen the movie first* There's too much new information for it just to be a recap. Remember that originally in the series Utena didn't like Touga at all, and later began to grow on him a bit. The biggest part of what convinced me was when Utena mentions that Touga said that they would 'gaze at starts together forever' and later only a few people actually knew who Touga was. Miki asks 'Who's this Touga?' Right before you see Touga himself turn and walk away. Plus there's the actual death of Akio, and the fact that Dios isn't a projection anymore, minus the Utena backstabbing and the doll-like qualities Anthy previously had.
It's a beautiful piece, the score, the animation, the art, it's all wonderful, there's just things that have convinced me beyond all doubt that it's a sequel, a cleverly disguised one. One of the other major factors, for me, is that the Japanese rarely do recap movies of their anime like we do, they usually are just spots in between that they couldn't fit into the show, or even sequels. *shrugs* We've all got our opinions, but I just wanted to list some of my supporting facts. The creator said at the opening, I beleive, that they're not going to tell us which it is.
EDIT: I forgot to mention the lack of certain key characters from the series like Mikage and Mamiya, and the very brief appearences of some other characters i.e. Kozue and Nanami.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the lack of certain key characters from the series like Mikage and Mamiya, and the very brief appearences of some other characters i.e. Kozue and Nanami. I still can't see it as being a sequel...yes there were elements of it looking a sequel as you mentioned, but it seemed more like an alternate universe. A different spin on the same old story. All the duels were covered, glimpses of the Mikage elevator and confessional were in there, and it had the final duel with Akio were Anthy in the end freed herself after Utena's sacrifice. If I had to make a seriously simplistic guess about the Touga thing, I'd say that Touga was being protrayed as a 'ghost of his former self', which is something he also became in the anime series. But like I stated earlier, I don't feel like going into all that mess. There are too many trains of thought and little details that can be interpretted one way or the other, and it'd clog the place. XD So I suppose one has to formulate their own theories and ideas about what they see and understand from the movie.

I don't care about Mamiya or Kozue but no Mikage or Nanami?! Say it ain't so! gonk LadyPrincePyro ...the final duel with Akio were Anthy in the end freed herself after Utena's sacrifice. Aha so she was a sacrifice. Yay points for me cool Well perhaps in a different context, but at least I mentioned it rofl Is anyone good with those Quest Progress siggies by the way? I've been working on one (among other things) for like an hour and a half and it still sucks xd sweatdrop I have all the pics, just trying to make it all pretty like. 3nodding

You know I never did get what Frau meant when she said "Hair eating like Saionji", and now I do
I have just finished watching the movie! heart blaugh And though I loved it I'd be lying if I said I got just about any of it.
Touga was dead since the beginning, that much I know. So he was a figment of Utena and Shiori's imagination? That's why Juri knew Touga and Miki didn't-she was the girl who was drowning right? And that's why Shiori hates Juri. Because Touga drowned saving her. Wow, drama much? wink
That seems to make loads of sense. His being a ghost would also explain why the girls didn't stop and oggle at him (I'm so proud of myself if I'm right xd ). But there's just one problem he called Anthy. He blew a whistle and called her name. eek Unless he's one of those ghosts that can assume a physical form or something... Or maybe Anthy could see ghosts?
Then there's just the plot itself. Although it confused the hell out of me, I can't say that that was in any way a sequel. It just didn't build on anything that had happened in the series at all. Anthy wasn't Anthy either, she was animated, driven, sincere, and cool. Not to mention totally HAWT xd
At any rate, methinks Ikuhara-san watched The Matrix and The Fast and the Furious one too many times xd (you have to admit Anthy was totally awesome behind the wheel... not too shabby for a 14 year old wouldn't you say? wink )
Sooooo Ivy-chan...
got anymore essays? 3nodding
And you'll all be pleased to know that since I have seen both the series and the movie I'll totally stop flooding the thread! Ain't it grand?
