"This is perfect!" Dr. Landford said in quiet amazement. "Apart form the loss of life, the ship is practically carrying out out mission for us. We were instructed to seek out the alien race and discuss the plague. What if this Cho'Vortas IS the plague. We are going to end up WITH the alien species that has been battling this thing for who knows how long!" Dr. Landford was quite excited about the prospect.
"I mean think about it. We cannot really do much about our current situation until we meet this 'host race' and the computer clearly will not listen to our reasoning, so we might as well make the best of this. Narkelum, would you be able to provide information on the translation of the human language we are speaking now into the language of the host race?" Like the old adage goes, if at first you don't succeed, get a computer to do it.

"Obviously the Cho'Vortas is the root cause of Earth's plaque, from what the system is telling us. If this unknown species have been battling against them for so long, the better questions to pose would be HOW has the Cho'Vortas interacted with us to cause our current dilemma and WHY. Those questions give us a chance to fight back against it. Seeing the host race does not."
She shook her head a moment, trying to dislodge something from her thoughts but nothing showed on her face. "But you do have a point in us being unable to reason with a machine. At least decrypting the alien language will eat up some time." And keep me busy.

Tilting her head back Lola crossed her hands over her closed eyes and let out a small sigh. "So, Narkelum, what you're saying is that because I have been a space bum and haven't set a foot on Earth in who knows how long I got kidnapped? This is just bloody wonderful."

"Apologies. I have not made myself clear. Please understand when it is said that the Cho'Vortas have attacked your race directly. You understand the ailments to be a sickness or plague. Neither is correct. What humanity faces is the Cho'Vortas itself."
"Cho'Vortas are self-evolving. But they require minimal assistance in order to transport themselves in order to spread. They are highly intelligence, yet depend upon a symbiotic host. By definition, they are a parasite. The difference: when they are finished with their host, the host has become Cho'Vortas."
"Furthermore, Lola, if you wish to understand your situation more accurately, your accusations of kidnapping have saved your life. It will only be a short time before Earth itself is conquered by the Cho'Vortas and all life that once thrived will be no more. All humans that survive will be away from the planet. By estimations of interwoven systems, less than two million humans will survive the initial attack of Cho'Vortas. Estimations of a human calendar month lower these survival rates to less than two hundred fifty thousand."
"Upon arriving at our destination, I will provide translation between the host race and humanity. To your ears, the host race speaks in musical tones. The written language itself is much easier to translate."

Lola tried to bring up enough humanity left in her soul to care about the death of billions of strangers. She couldn't. After all she had been through with her training teaching her to supress her emotions and then becoming a pirate and having to further bury them Lola didn't think she could even be considered human anymore. As far as she was concerned the Cho'Vortas could kill off all of her enemies so she could retire somewhere quiet and live the rest of her life peacefully.
But Lola doubted that sort of attitude would go far with this small group of people and they couldn't afford to be fighting right now. "So after they kill most of our race then what? Do they move on to kill again or stick around to kill the rest of us? And what about the host race? Are they physically compatible with us for genetic, medicinal and breeding purposes?"

"...and you could not have told us this sooner? Like when we could actually help ourselves?" Dr. Landford said angrily. He knew the computer did not have the ability to think of the consequences of its actions beyond its primary programing, but the whole situation got Dr. Landford upset. Billions of people were dying and the only humans that knew why were being whisked away by some stupid computer and its nutjob creators.
Dr. Landford turned around and leaned heavily on the console, sighing with frustration. He was considering leaving the bridge....and doing what? He thought to himself in a defeated tone.
"Well," Dr. Landford said from his position, "I guess the first question then is what do we do till we get there..." Dr. Landford looked up from the floor and faced the others, looking at them all for suggestions till he finally rested his gaze on the Colonel.

After a while of thinking, Dezire shuddered at the implications of almost the whole human race being in the grips of some unknown creature and she clenched her fists. Then she thought about it and raised up her head to the main viewing screen.
"Would it be safe to say that some of the humans would gain..how to put it..an Immunity to them? Or is the human race damned and doomed to become a crazed alien race as well? Is there no way, medically or other wise to defeat them? Or at least contain them so they cannot spread......" She lowered her head back down. She felt anger and tried to hang on to any hope she had. "Humans aren't that weak............"

It took Lola a minute to place the voice who was speaking. When she thought about it a bit more she didn't even know the woman's name or what the hell she was doing on the ship to begin with. Sitting up Lola looked at her. "Honey, we became a crazed race a long time ago. Our thirst for new technology has brought us into this mess, if we had been content with what we had this whole thing would never have happened. And as a rule humans are weak, it isn't until we face a crisis like this that we become strong. We are partially to blame for this but we have no way of apologizing and from the sounds of it they wouldn't accept it anyway."
Lola was almost sat back in her chair before something else occured to her, "And how the hell do you think we could build an immunity to an alien race? They aren't a disease! Now that we know they're not a disease and indeed a race of aliens that are attacking us then that means we're at war. Our job now is to kill them all before they kill us." With that said Lola leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms.

"I'm sure that our kind benefactors are thinking the exact same thing and have yet to come up with a way of killing the damn things. Hence our extended jaunt through space." Dr. Landford said. He had sunken into somewhat of a brooding but thoughtful disposition. Though he spoke quite clearly, he seemed to remain completely focused on something entirely within himself.

"Well, whatever they're thinking doesn't matter much to me." Standing Lola stretched her arms above her head then sighed and placed her hands on her hips. "I don't know about anyone else but the 2 days and 7 plus hours of not eating is starting to hit me and since most of the crew is dead there won't be a line in the mess hall. Plus, I won't have to eat whatever they had made, I can make it fresh." With a quick smile at the thought of cooking Lola headed for the door that led off the bridge.

Eating? Who could think of eating at a time like this? Dr. Landford thought to himself. His naturally easy going nature warred with his sense of responsibility. He felt responsible fordoing something...anything...but the sad fact was they were all trapped and the only thing they could really do was try to put some semblance of order into their lives before they reached whatever destination they were hurtling towards. Not knowing what else to do, Dr. Landford followed Lola out off the bridge. He paused on the threshold and turned. "Anyone else coming?" He asked before continuing out the door.

Dezire kept herself from being to swayed by the womans comment and gave a small smile to the doctor. She clamped her hands over her stomach as it made a loud gurgle and grumble at the mention of food. Dezire nodded and walked towards the door as well

Dr Landford completed the walk to the mess hall in silence. They were on the first steps of a grand adventure, the likes of which would change the course of humanity, no, would determine the very survival of the human race! But the world that they involuntarily left behind would be wiped out and humans sent spiraling on a path to possible extinction. Dr. Landford found it causing conflicting emotions, to say the least, but he dealt with them in stride. He could no more help those on earth than he could change the direction of the ship. "Should we be having breakfast, lunch or dinner?"

As they walked down the hall Lola didn't even seem to notice the dead colleagues they walked passed. "Personally Doc I don't care what we have." Jumping the counter Lola found a spare apron and tied it around her waist. "What would you like to have? In my line of work without a chef you learn to either cook bad or good. I prefer to eat good food so I cook good food." Shrugging Lola went towards the back to see what kind of food was available.

"Oh, anything with carbohydrates. I have a particular weakness for pasta, potato, bread and the like." Dr. Landford said. Though he was no nearly as unaffected as Lola seemed to be, he was certainly recomposing that good humored nature that seemed to have been a staple of his prior to the incident on board the ship. "I can handle a stove if the need arises, but I have rarely need to make anything more than a bowl of cereal for such a long time. I guess working for the company has spoiled me of late." He said, even managing a chuckle.
