i remember the choir director (who was also the director of the jazz ensemble) at my old high school said something about needing an apprentice bassist. So i, a freshman with only a couple months experience and a penchant for grunge, signed up. He already had like three bass players, but they were all seniors. Luckily, they were also some of the best musicians in the state, so they gave me a piece of their knowledge and set me up to take over for them the next year. They got me started on jazz, and ive been hooked since.

My middle school had a Jazz Band that played every friday morning for the school before it was time to go to class. From the first day, i fell in love with the music, the rythm and the freedom. I tryed out of the band, my 7th grade year and made it. From there on, i've fallen more and more in love with the music. When i got to highschool, many of the people i had played with in Jazz during my middle school years, contunied...so it made festivals and stuff that like more fun and easier since i already knew how we all play.

My band teacher asked me when I came into 6th grade if I wanted to play piano for our jazz band. Usually it's only 7th and 8th graders but I was an acception. smile So now I love jazz, thanks to my band teacher.

Where I live, there used to be a good Jazz radio station (now they just play crap) that listened to a good bit when growing up. When I got in Seventh grade, I tried out for the school Jazz Band and was 3rd out of 5 trumpets chosen (the 2 before me were in 8th grade at the time).I've been playing it ever since.

Best friend's an alto sax god. You hear a lot of jazz when you hang around with him. It rubs off.

I don't really listen to too much Jazz... all though I do like some songs (Watermelon Man) But I am in my high school Jazz band (parents said I had to, so, I did). I love to play Jazz. I am singing for a concert on Monday, Higher Ground (Red Hot Chilli Peppers/Stevie Wonder) and 25 or 6 to 4 (Chicago) (those are more rock, though)

I got into jazz last year. In my band we played Birdland and Baby Elephant Walk. Both are jazz toons and I loved. The band loves it. I really got into jazz during the summer. I went to the Summer Jazz program in my district. I just wanted to try it out and now because of it, I LOVE jazz. heart

Well, it all started back in 5th grade... Haha, corny, I know. But I remember our instructor telling us that there was a Jazz band in 6th grade, and how much of an honor it was to be in it. (Now that I joined, I realize that she was pulling our leg. x]) Well, anyway, the summber before 6th grade I really wasn't serious about band, I was on the verge of quitting many times. In 6th grade I was a terrible kid, but I'm really glad I stuck with band.
But, the time I started getting serious was the summer before 7th, I begun listening to some stuff like Van Morrison, and listening to the sax solos really helped me out. So, in 7th grade, I got pretty good and made the jazz band again. I got a couple solos in 'Land of 1000 dances', which was pretty exciting and equally scary. Once I took my seat from playing, I was shaking like a leaf. My friends kept on reassuring me that I didn't honk, but I'm almost sure I did. xD
Well, this year, try pulling me away from my sax and you might get your hand bitten off. It's home with me every weekend, practicing my solos and just plain working on techniques. I can't entirely grasp vibrato and it's starting to upset me. Dx When I don't have my sax I'm either in school, or listening to one of the many sax greats. I go to some of the local gigs every weekend, just yesterday I saw a really good band called 'Zen for Primates'. They were excellent, and the violinist was so nice.
Anyway, now I either plan on picking up jazz flute, trumpet, or just plain viola. I started on viola, and I miss it. :[ Aaaannnnyway, that's enough on my musical history now. xD
