Sirius smiled. "Well, you should have seen their faces. They looked very, truly heart-broken. But I wouldn't go with anyyone but you." They walked together in tune.As they neared the Great Hall, distant voices could be heard.

Franki's pale face flushed pink. "Well, I feel very special now. I'm the only girl Sirius Black would take to a dance. That has to be important," she said with a smile in his direction. "I hope you can dance."

James, right on time as always, was stalling in his dorm. What if he made a fool of himself? What if he didn't look right? What if everyone who had been rooting for him before were suddenly against him? Oh dear Godric, what if their outfits didn't match!? He shook his head like a drunken dog, thinking he was being silly. He looked at himself in the mirror, thinking about how his dress robes looked like a muggle tuxedo. Then, taking in a deep breath, he launched himself down the spiral staircase at full-tilt, only to trip on the second to last step and go flying, shrieking like a manly banshee.
The top of Marketa's head peeked around the door to the girls' dorm spiral staircase. Dark eyes surveyed the scene of jubilation and cheerfulness and tripping boys, and her stomach collapsed in on itself. She pulled back and closed the door, dropping onto the bottom step and burying her face in her arms. She was going to make such a fool of herself. She knew it. This dress wasn't meant for her, it was meant for that brave bold girl a few feet away. She couldn't even walk in her own shoes, instead sitting in these that made her ankles wobble. She looked at her fingernails, covered in chipped purple polish, and knew that she was not meant to act like a teenage girl. Anyone who looked at her thought she had failed her last year several times, and was now nearly thirty. She felt nearly thirty. It didn't help that she'd put on a knitted gray sweater before starting to go down either. Maybe she just needed a minute, and then she'd go out and she'd drop the sweater and she would feel special and maybe even a little bit attractive for the first time in over a year. Taking a deep balancing breath, she stood up, leaving the sweater on the stairs, and entered the Common Room to wait for Ian.

Ian walked down the stairs, fiddling with his collar on his dress robes. He reached the entrance of the common room, looking down at James. "You want a hand?" he asked kindly, holding out his hand.

James gave a crooked grin and took Ian's hand. "Thanks mate," he said with a nervously squeaky laugh.

Ian smiled, then released James' hand. "Got to go, mate. I think I see my date," Ian said, looking over at Marketa. He smiled in her direction and made his way through the common room towards Marketa. "Hey," he said as he reached her. "You look... stunning."

Marketa smiled as she awkwardly tugged at her dress and wobbling in her shoes. "Tanks...I don't really feel stunning, so dis is good to hear. You look extremely handsome." She brushed her hair behind her ear, realizing she should have done something with it, but liked it down.
James nodded absently, having stopped paying attention to Ian at the word 'got.' He saw Lily and blanked out, completely mezmerized.

Ian smiled and held out his hand. "Shall we?" he asked politely. What do I do if she wants to dance? I'll never be able to pull off anything that'll look like I can dance at all. Oh man, what am I going to do? Ian thought to himself. He felt so screwed over but kept the smile on his face.

Marketa grinned anxiously as she took his hand, thinking the same thing. "Maybe, you know, if we dance, den we could just...sort of...sway, yeah? You know....dat ting dey always do in de Muggle films..." She thought about how to describe it. The boy kept both his hands on the girl's waist, the girl's arms around his neck, and they just sort of rocked back in forth to the beat, not really moving their feet at all. And, if a teacher came by, then would move another inch apart, then move closer and closer every time the teacher left until they were comfortable.

Ian nodded. "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. By the way, I love the dress. It's beautiful on you," he complimented.

"Well, I'm sure that you can get used to it. I'm sure that you'll get a lot of compliments, and not just from me either. I think I'll have to ward off all other males that come close to you," Ian said with a smile. He looked her over. He grinned at her, his own eyes sparkling.

Ian smiled. "I don't see why not," he said, "but let's go. I think they've already got music playing and there should be food." He gestured for her to move ahead of him but didn't release her hand.

Lily jumped up when she saw James fall. She giggled when she saw his lop-sided glasses. She stood there, admiring his features. They just waited, in silence, totally memerized.
