You learn can learn any techniques as long as you're in the blue it is taught. You should never have to repair your boat.

Let's say what if our character is a gay guy, or asexual?
Would a gay guy or somebody who is asexual be affected by the power of the Mero Mero?

 That's a tough one. However, I'm going to have to go with yes. In some cases, like Pistol Kiss -- Attraction isn't even needed.
