Kaleb nodded, and replied as though he had read her mind. "But sometimes you never know what you're capable of until you try." Neither of his parents had shown any inclination for magic, and he likely would have still been struggling to find a path in medicine if he hadn't been curious and attended a seminar on magical healing.

"Oohhh..." She though about that for a bit. "Well i know i cant turn stuff into dice like Luxord ... but i havnt tried making water things. And i can make thoes creepy portals, only mine are different."

The mage grinned. "It sounds like you've got a head-start compared to where I was the first time I picked up a magic textbook." He turned to stare out at the rain, taking a deep breath to enjoy the wet, rainy scent. "I would love to figure out a spell for portals, then I wouldn't have to pay so much to take the bus to work and back."

"Maybe ... if i can figure out how i do mine i can try to teach you?" Luxord had taught her but she'd almost failed. He had to pull from the 'darkness' inside him but she seemed to be missing that. So she'd come up with another way somehow and it worked.

Kaleb's smile grew wider. "I-I would love that." The mage glanced down at his book and flipped a couple pages. "I haven't had time to research portals on my own, and if I were able to work out a theory, I would be afraid to test it."

"It was fun testing it for me. Mostly cause i fell into the fountian a few times before i figured out how to make it end up where i wanted it." She giggled.
"It wasnt hard really .... well it might have been but now that i can do it its not that hard."

Kaleb almost laughed, but he managed to stifle it quickly. "That must have been a surprise, is it not possible to see where you'll end up before you step through the portal?"

"I can see where i am going now, but when i first tried i couldnt. It was just a random thing so i ended up wet alot." She giggled. "It was fun the first time i did it cause it made Father laugh"

It really sounded like she had a lot of good memories with her family, Kaleb thought, and he was reminded of his own family. Of course, his fond childhood memories with his father weren't so exciting, they usually involved a quiet evening with a good book.
"How long did it take you to get good at portals?" Kaleb asked curiously.

"Ummmm...." she though about it for a minuet, chewing on her fingers again. "Well i started learning when i was little ... so i'm not sure. I didnt get good at them until a little bit ago."
If she didnt pay attention she still ended up in the wrong place but at least now she could see where she was going to end up first.

Kaleb glanced up at the invisible barrier keeping the rain off them, he had always been idly entertained by the pattern of water rivulets that formed as the raindrops struck the shield and ran off the edges. "I bet you'll be able to learn other types of magic quickly, getting into the habit of practicing is pretty important."

"I liked practicing the portals, espically when i figured out how to get into the kitchen, i could sneek apples better that way."
She grinned. "Hey .... can i poke the barrier? Or would my hand to through it?"

Kaleb laughed a bit at that, if he had known how to make portals before dinner when he was a child, he would have never had room for the meal.
"Yeah, you can poke it." Kaleb said as he reached up and did just that, the invisible shield denting only slightly so the water ran off the upper surface faster. "It's not nearly as strong as my protective shields, it just needs to be waterproof..."

She reached out and poked the barrier. It felt intresting and it was cool to watch the water slid off in a different direction when the barrier bowed out.
"That's cool .... it'd be neat if i could do something like that"

Kaleb looked over at her with a smile, lowering his hand. "If you learn the basics of shielding techniques, adapting them to serve other purposes isn't too difficult. I could probably show you how to create one like this."
