Name: Meso Benthi
Aliases: Meso, Photial, Mezolasi, Mezo (he'll try not to respond to the second, and he hates being called the third or fourth)

About: Meso was "born" into an organization of deep-sea aquatics and raised to be a brutal fighter for his Clan. After the death of a close friend, he ran away and moved to a city on another part of the sea floor, Sedimens. There he lived a mild-mannered life working at a hobby shop, selling games, comicbooks, and toys. He wasn't much of a news person, so he would often be surprised about the antics of a crime-fighting superhero named Photial who manipulated light to fight off criminals and supervillains. He professed ignorance of any sort of news about the Harbor School, a group of superheroes that Photial belonged to. He was, however, outraged by the act that sought to drag superheroes such as the Harbor School out of the limelight and require them to give up their vigilantism or risk imprisonment. Photial disappeared and Meso Benthi seemed to retreat into his shell. He remained in Sedimens for a few more years before moving away.
Despite his brutal appearance, Meso is actually quite sweet and outgoing, chatty, but always a little unsure of himself. He peppers his speech with lots of "um"s, "kinda"s, "I dunno"s, and especially "y'know"s. He loves playing with lights...

Meso's Story
Meso Benthi was born Mezolasi in an underwater city called Sohtab, which was built on the side of a mesobenthic seamount. Sohtab is very isolationist with a culture that shuns all outside influence. Every few generations, a child is born with the ability to manipulate light. These Light Bearers are worshipped as incarnations of their god. Both Mezolasi and his older brother Abylasi were born with this ability and they were raised in isolation from other Sohtabese. Their world was shattered when an interloper named Epi Pelagi wandered into Sohtab. She was arrested and sentenced to death, but Mezolasi, then a teenager, was fascinated by her and helped her escape. He then convinced the elders to let him “chase” her. Under orders to capture and kill her before she could spread word of Sohtab to the upper-dwellers (people who live in the epipelagic), he instead followed her to her hometown of Sedimens, an epibenthic city-state, where he accidentally entered her world.
Epi was the adopted daughter of Neritia Pelagi, an agent of the Sedimens government. Neri’s task was to keep an eye on the Harbor School, a group of superheroes. In theory anyway—in practice, Neri was their mentor, their aid, their voice in the government, their confidant, and, on occasion, their person-who-screams-at-them-when-they-really-mess-things-up. Mezolasi accidentally aided the Harbor School in a fight, and after being initially mistaken for a super villain’s henchman, he was allowed to join them as a sidekick to the notoriously short-tempered Fyco Wrath. Fyco Wrath was chosen because his powers of light manipulation might be compatible with her powers of algae manipulation. At first, she was unhappy with the arrangement, preferring to work alone without the burden of having to take care of a “rookie,” but she eventually warmed up to the newly-named “Photial” after he began to attract a rogue’s gallery of his own. Mezolasi was set up with a new secret identity as “Meso Benthi” and began to make friends of his own.
What finally got Fyco to warm up to him was the arrival of his brother, Abylasi, who had been sent to bring his brother home. This caused a brief controversy, but Fyco insisted that Meso be given a chance to stay, finally sticking up for her junior partner. Over time she warmed up far enough to consider him to be her friend. When Meso had gotten enough experience to strike out on his own, he was “replaced” by the chipper and innocent orphan Zoox, real name Symbi Dinum. In practice, Photial, Zoox, and Fyco fought together about seventy-five percent of the time and shared several rogues with each other.
As time went by, however, the people of Sedimens became more and more enraged at the superheroes and decided that it was time for the “reign of terror” of the Harbor School to end. To that end, legislation that called for a registration and constraint of all superheroes was called, and several “concerned citizens” hired the supervillains to enforce the act. The result…was war. After a week of fierce fighting, several supers were dead, including Keltos (a flying-brick type), Fyco, and Neritia. Authorities swooped in to snatch up sidekicks such as Zoox and take him into government custody.
The reaction of various supers…varied. Heartbroken over the loss of her adopted mother and feeling betrayed by the people her mother in theory worked for, Epi left Sedimens, vowing never to return. She had made contact not long before with a land-person named Ganaia and decided to find her friend to live with her. Symbi suffers now from depression, paranoia, and loneliness, feeling abandoned and lost. Meso fought for ages to try to adopt Symbi from foster care, but as a clerk at a hobby shop, he was unable to impress the officials enough to adopt his friend. Eventually, Meso left after much urging from Epi. Some supers have left; some have stayed and live ordinary lives. Still others joined the army or the police or moved to other cities to become superheroes there. Some of them are still in contact; most of them try to stay in contact with the three sidekicks that the Harbor School had at the time, Zoox, Dolphingirl, and Sheer, though at times it is difficult.
