Erik didn't dare interfering with the attempt, thinking another demon would just complicate things. When Siber asked him if he wanted to learn, he eagerly accepted, "That would be great!"

Tomas merely muttered in the back of his mind.

Erik couldn't hold back his surprise.

or a woman's touch. That's cowardice at the age of seventeen.>

Tomas didn't answer. Erik just felt an annoyed, almost sulky aura.

Siber decided to ignore the knock on the door and the footsteps following it and took on a lecturing tone, finally allowing himself to realize that this guy was actually four years younger than he. It wasn't a condescending tone- it was a teaching one. "There are seven chakras of the human body. Each one coincides with a bodily plexus- I think it's seven intersecting lines of force. I don't know all of them, but it's the base of the spine, then the hypogastric, solar, cardiac, carotid, medulla, and cerebral plexus."

"Each one of those corresponds to a human desire- the first one's Manipura, the base of the spine, and it's the desire for survival, passion, and rage. To summon the demon, just focus on that plexus in the same way you do the summoning circle. If you want, you can attach it to a metal object, but I'd wait until you have some more experience before doing that. Besides, you seem to be better at evocation, anyway."

Incantatis?>

Siber scratched the squirrel on its head, eliciting a chur, then set it on his shoulder. It was draining his power at an infinitesmal trickle; he guessed because of how relaxed they both were. He decided to name it- Riuk.

Erik automatically took the role of a highly inquisitive student, "Wait. Is there any way to control what demon you summon? Is it random? Also, is this thaumaturgy? The way you talked about a metal object made it seem that way. When you're concentrating on the plexus, will the demon just be summoned, or is there a release step as with the circles?"

Erik decided not to answer.

Paul shrugged. "Well..." He whipped out the handgun and popped a few rounds off into the wall. Each round was greeted with an explosion just short of the power of a smallish grenade. Robert internally sword.

Alright, get talking.

I can be.

O...kay.

Paul raised the handgun again, closing his eyes in concentration for half a minute before he snapped off a shot. There was no difference. He shrugged, closed his eyes again, and tried again. As he thought about it, he began to visualize it. He could visualize each step, the gases pushing the round out of the barrel, the round exploding against the wall... and then he could literally see it.

See it against the backs of his eyelids, as though he were really looking at it.

The explosion was rather large this time.

I can concentrate my entire mind on something.

Duh.

..I'm just going to say, what?

Paul closed his eyes again, squinching them tight, shutting out the distracting light. His imagination took over, and he could visualize the shadow wrapping up around him like a cloak, but it wasn't the physical sight he had had of the bullets exploding. Before he even tried, he knew it wasn't working. He opened his eyes; his shadow still lay beneath him, imitating his every move. Again he closed his eyes, closing out the light, concentrating hard.

A minute passed. A bead of sweat ran down Paul's forehead. Nothing happened; it was still an imagination. It wasn't working; apparently either shadow manipulation was just too hard for him, or it was the spell himself. He bent over behind him, grabbing at his shadow, but he only found carpet. "Sunnova..." Paul squinched his eyes closed again, concentrating yet again.

"If you're manipulating your shadow, there's something you can do that is, in my opinion, much better," Alan observed. "I'm pretty good at Shadow manipulation, so here's a trick I use: Displacement. Manipulate the light such that rather than it reflecting off you and back, it's reflected off you, pulled to the side, and then released. Like this." He blinked and twitched, and suddenly was four feet away.

"Shoot the image if you want. This is a simple one with no sound alteration," Alan explained, his voice coming from the empty space where he had been. "Oh. Another thing. If I don't combine it with a Chameleonic, it looks like... this." His original body appeared again, with the image of him next to it. "Now, if I do this several times and Chameleon myself..."

There were five of him now.

"Of course, none of those are real," Paul heard from several feet away from the images. They all faded and the real Alan became visible again. "The thing is, Chameleonics and Displacements tend to be a lot of natural aptitude, sometimes. It's easier for thaumaturges, though. I'd suggest if you're creating a Shadow-based direct defense, bind it to something like blinking, combined with the will for the defense, and give it an effect of direct motion alteration of anything entering a certain area, for instance. I'm an evoker, though, so I can throw out many and varied Shadow techniques... but I have shitty natural mana reserves, so I tire far too quickly."

"The demon summoned will be the one you want. I'm pretty sure it will be the same every time."

"You can give orders as you summon, give them after you summon, whatever. As long as you display no signs of weakness, like fear, irrationality, or stupidity, it will obey you, to an extent. You need to become familiar with the feel of it to achieve real command, though. It's more thaumaturgical- it takes a long time to do, much longer than evocation, if you don't have a metal object attached. The summoning circles are, as far as I know, the only real evocative summoning method."

"Also, if you choose to use an object, make sure it means something to you. The more sentimental value, the easier it will be to work with the associated demon. And... that's all I really know. Give it a shot- see what happens."

"Alright. Let's see now..." Paul muttered, deciding to try the illusion trick Alan had done. He closed his eyes, focusing willpower towards the light, wanting to be able to move it, make it go how he wanted to.

The image came clear against the back of his eyelids, and suddenly there was another Paul. Paul opened his eyes. The other Paul did too. The first Paul thought for a moment... and the second Paul whipped out his pistol as though of his own will and let off three false silent shots, though the muzzle flash was real enough. The real Paul had done none of this.

"Hey. That's pretty cool."

Good, because I worked pretty hard on it. So... to create a shadow shield, maybe the light-bending trick will work again?

Paul closed his eyes, willing the light to bend away, willing his shadow to leap up into the empty space he had created, to protect him, to be capable of doing so.

He leaned backward, grabbed onto what felt like silk, and pulled his shadow up and around him.

"Awesome. Absolutely awesome. Although... I understand now I guess how you do things. My question is, what kind of things should I do? Thaumaturgy, or at least my interpretation, seems to be giving specific things powers beforehand to make them available at bidding, but surely there's some other theory to its use."

Erik concentrated as Siber told him to and tried to release the demon. He kept at it for a good minute, and just as he was about ready to give up, it clicked. A swirl of flames revealed a small, jet black thing that looked vaguely humanoid. It was just kind of...stretched. It looked around with beady black eyes and sat where it was summoned.

Erik mentally told it to stand up, but the thing just glanced over at him and smiled, showing off a mouthful of little white daggers. Erik tried to force his will upon the thing, as he had before, but to no avail. The cheeky little b*****d just stood up, bowed, and disappeared in the same flashy manner in which he had appeared.

Tomas laughed.
Erik was highly annoyed, "I didn't show any fear, but it still wouldn't listen to me."

"Well, the closest thing we have to a working reason for its functionality is that you sort of... infuse each of the particles the thing with a little bit of the... effect, we'll call it, for the sake of a metaphor," Alan mused. "Anyway. You infuse a small portion of the magic into each of the particles, you key it to a trigger and when the trigger's conditions are fulfilled, it activates it, like a lysogenic virus - it becomes part of it, and when it's triggered, you're activating a changed part of it, the part that consists of the pre-formed magical effect. The thing is, when it's released, the part that was changed goes back to how it was before. We've looked at thaumaturgic foci under microscopes, they look exactly the same.

"But then, maybe using science to explain magic isn't such a good idea. Only magic can really explain magic. It's impossible to achieve something if you believe it can't be done, but that doesn't make it so you can do anything you believe you can. The closest thing we have is measuring that when we tell people that a spell has a certain percentage chance of working, and they cast it, it only succeeds exactly that often. That's why you have to have total confidence and open-mindedness to cast effectively. I've seen something the Shadowmen do - where they target disbelief at the magic, wielding it like a weapon, and it shorts it out, sort of. The magic ceases to function. But they know magic exists, or they wouldn't be Warlock hunters. We think they do it by training their very state of mind to simultaneously acknowledge it as a threat, while targeting disbelief at it so forcefully as to disconnect it." He paused for a while, then added. "Of course, they could be bullshitting and using some sort of other method, but we don't know much about them."

Siber raised his eyebrows as the demon shifted in, then back out, of existence. "You have to convince the demon that it should obey you. It's like any animal- if it doesn't recognize any reason to follow orders, it'll just go about its own business." He let Riuk vanish- he knew he would need sleep, and didn't want to have to recover any more energy than he had to.
"I'm going to go check on whoever's at the door."

Siber obediently closed his eyes and focused his mind on the pattern of light and shadow he had seen before. It was several minutes before he could detect the slight ripple of Keldan's power, and Keldan explained later that it was because it had taken him that long to produce it. He really was no good at evocation.

He had watched Keldan's influence extend along the light scheme, down hallways and stairs, and finally to the doorway, but he had no idea how it was done. "Erik- it's Joe and a girl. I'm gone; wanna come?" Although he was in truth all business again, he extended the invitation in a friendly manner and started walking.

Erik was ready to keep going on the chakra summoning but he knew he probably shouldn't. It was about time for bed and rest.

"I'll come," he said and followed Siber toward the door.
Tomas taunted.

Siber removed his shoes after just a few steps, still apprehensive, and continued walking stocking-footed. He allowed Erik to catch up with him and continued on in silence. What was he going to do when he got there? How would he act? Joe had seen his playful side. He couldn't exactly be dark and mysterious... or could he? Could Joe just have to think he was split-personality? Perhaps... it might be fun. He grinned, tilted his head down, then schooled his expression to normalcy. He finally saw Joe talking to a girl of... questionable dress and approached with a moderately dark expression on his face, then waited to be included, rather than speaking up for himself.

Joe didn't relax his stance. "Umm...I suppose."
Roland? Do we tell her?

He nodded, relaxing slightly. "Yeah, I'm one of those people that hear voices. My name's Joe." Joe extended a hand. "My ancestor's name is Roland."
He glanced over and saw Siber. "Here's another one. His name is Siber. I think his ancestor's name is Keldan, or something. Care to introduce yourself?" he asked Kayla.

Kayla's face split into a grin, and she stepped inside. To Siber and Erik she said "My name's Kayla. My ancestor is Vassily. Would it be possible to speak with Legion? Or does he sit behind the curtain and scare the crap out of dorothy from there?" She gave the two newcomers a once-over, and judged them to be at least moderately trustworthy. "Have you been practicing magic? The air tastes like metal in here."

She then focused on ignoring the irritated voice of Vassily in the back of her mind.

Siber grinned mischievously at Kayla's words. "The wizard has made himself absent, as far as I know. He had us preparing some simple- something you've clearly already begun, if you can taste magic residue."
he asked Keldan.
"We are apparently going to free some brethren tomorrow. Have you come to join us?"
