“You’ve got a point. He has to get used to dealing with girls eventually, being a Bronzerider and all. All the girls are going to be crawling all over him and he’s just going to be like, ‘…Can I help you?’. Dimglow. Always hogging all of the girls.”
Elae looked over her shoulder, just to make sure Raena was far enough so that she wouldn’t hear what else she had to say. She just had to share the truth of Vox’s discovery with Nan, but she doubted that the Healer would approve. It was not spreading rumors, shard it all! It was attempting to get to the truth of things! Besides, it had direct relevance to the current situation!
“It gets better. I found Vox in Raena’s bed. Just sleeping there! And Raena immediately recognized him. She didn’t know C’ren’s name though, but she knew his dragon by name. Apparently, they never exchanged names…” winkwinknudgenudge. Something was most definitely afoot! A Greenrider canoodling with not just one, but two female Candidates? Elae paused to think about C’ren’s age before shrugging. “In terms of worldly cynicism, I’d say he’s ancient. You know, they keep records of this stuff! I bet we could figure it out. And where he came from too.”
Admittedly, it was difficult to imagine Raena canoodling with anyone, but people always had secret depths. She nudged Nan in the ribs and whispered, “We should go get on that research now…”
Unfortunately, Vox had other ideas. Up until now, the chubby blue firelizard had been fairly quiet. But then he saw His and started rumbling happily, telling His all about the wonderful meal he’d just eaten and how these nice girls were talking and they were so nice! And watching. And just talking. Vox, far from the brightest glow in the basket, told His alllll about it through a series of images.
At first, C’ren was tempted to simply brush the images away. It wasn’t like Vox didn’t tell him things like this all the time. But then he started to realize just how bad the situation could look…
“You know, if you’re going to spy on people, you really shouldn’t bring their firelizard along, Elae,” he said, trying to sound as calm as possible. Actually, in truth, he was about ready to stab someone in the face, but that sort of thing always upset Ceylith.
Ceylith growled at the very idea and glared at C’ren. No. You will not stab anyone in the face! This is supposed to be a happy day!
Fair enough. If they stop stalking me, I won’t stab them in the face. It’s a compromise.
It is not a compromise! That’s a threat! Mine, you always confuse the two!

Astarteth had just alerted Kallista that there were other people approaching when C'ren angrily moved so he could see the eavesdroppers and spoke outloud. Kallista had just settled with her green, ready to enjoy the moment when Ceylith moved towards her rider.
She was not privy to the blue's exchange with his bonded but Astarteth picked up on Vox's cheery disposition and the mood change between the older green and her rider. Those girls think bad things. They were watching you.
"Watching me do what? Get out of my dirty clothes so I don't stink?" Kallista remarked with equal heat in her voice. She held tight onto Astar as she stood up and moved to see who the spies were... She recognized the two chattering girls from one of the Candidate lessons and sitting at the tables together but did not know either of their names.
Bad girls. Bad girls. Astarteth's eyes tinged with red as she flapped her wings at them.
It would do neither hatchling nor weyrling any good to get too worked up. Trying to remain calm, perhaps the girls had an explanation. Especially since they had another's fire lizard. Moving to an almost defensive stance, Kallista waited to see what the two girls would say.

Indeed, hogging all of the girls and not even knowing he was doing it! Honestly, C'ym should just wear a sign that said he didn't understand women and flirt at your own risk. The moons would turn green before C'ym ever did anything remotely scandalous with a woman. She could only hope that his little bronze encouraged something exciting out of him. At the very least, he could win enough girls over with his cuteness that they'd forget about C'ym's inability to know a girl was interested in him even if she had it sewn on her forehead.
Nandeli recognize the universal sign for "I have a secret to tell you" and was all ears when Elae started talking about Vox. So the little thing was found on Raena's bed? Oooh, now that was good. And Raena knew who he was and everything? Ooooh, things really were getting better. "She didn't even exchange names with him? My my… you don't hear of girls who do that very often, not from the Healer group at least. Maybe she was using him to get closer to his dragons. Doesn't she want to be a dragonhealer or something?"
Records! Why didn't she think of that? "We'll have to go and look at them!" Find out exactly who this C'ren was and what he was doing, seeing two girls at the same time. Their dash for research was interrupted, however, when Vox decided it was time to return to his master. The rider's words made her grin. He thought they were spying? Tsk tsk! She would have to set the record straight.
Stepping out, Nandeli folded her arms across her chest and tried to look serious. "Greetings Greenrider C'ren! We meet at last!" For the first time, for the last time, you know the drill. "And we were merely observing the greenriders in their natural habitat. Interrelations are important." She winked at Elae. At Kallista's comment she laughed and shook her head. "My dear Kallista, I do believe I don't need to watch you take your clothes off. Girls just aren't my thing. Why, are they yours?" She sounded genuinely interested.

Elae instantly looked guilty at being caught spying, but she covered herself well. After all, one couldn’t be a gossip without getting caught occasionally. “Oh… Hi!” she said cheerily, waving as if she had just noticed the Greenrider and Weyrling. “Yeah, I found your little firelizard wandering around. I thought it would be a good idea to return him to you. You know, being a good citizen and all that.” She attempted to affect a veritable aura of respectability and failed miserably.
Vox didn’t seem to notice as he flapped his way over to His once more. He did, however, do his best to cuddle up to C’ren, completely missing out on the anger for several moments. Or perhaps he was merely trying to get rid of it. One thing was for sure: the fact that the blue firelizard was currently curling up around the dragonrider’s shoulders failed to make him seem imposing. At all. Elae tried to hold back a giggle at Nan’s questions and failed miserably.
“Interrelations.” C’ren repeated the word flatly and with a certain amount of derision, like a housewife who had just discovered a particularly large trundlebug inside the house. “You know, you girls could use a certain amount of lessons in that as well. For example, where I come from, it’s considered rude to spy on people. Also considered suicidal, considering Ceylith here and all.” Technically, he had no proof that they were deliberately and maliciously doing anything at all. Perhaps they really were just returning Vox.
But he wasn’t going to count on that. He knew Elae, after all, and had made a slight effort to keep track of her, just as he did with most of the ones he and Ceylith Searched. “You know, I really hope you weren’t spying. We’ve got quite enough Candidates here these days. More than we need, really. I hope I won’t have to register a complaint with your Candidatemaster.” A mild threat, when you got down to it. No matter how many Candidates they had, they could always use more. At worst, the girls would get stuck with extra cleaning duty, or perhaps numbweed picking duty.
“Spying? Perish the thought, Greenrider C’ren! Nan and I were simply walking by when we noticed you and Kallista. We merely thought you would be relieved to be reunited with Vox.” Aha! The threat confirmed at least one thing in Elae’s mind; C’ren felt threatened! How adorable! And, since he felt threatened, something was going on. It had to be!

Can I bite them? Was Astarteth response to the two girls talking. Her tail moved angrily from side to side. I can bite them. They will stop after that.
Kallista couldn't distinguish her anger from Astarteth's too well. All she knew was that the the girls, one now identified as Elae, were making remarks and giving them looks like they knew what was going on. As brainless as flits, Kallista decided right then and there. She was not fooled by their cheerful looks. "What my thing -is- or -could- be is none of your concern. As far as relations go, there is only one on my mind and you are upsetting her. Greatly."
As if in agreement, Astarteth hissed angrily at the girls again. Can we go get food now? I am hungry and they look tasty.
Shaking her head, Kallista turned to Ceylith and C'ren. She rolled her eyes so neither girl could see her. By now, her dozens of scratches were starting to throb and sting, making holding her green a little painful. She tossed her head back at them. "Astarteth is hungry. I'm off to feed her. I can always visit the Healer later."

"Really? Where do you come from, if you don't mind me asking?" Nandeli never passed up an opportunity to get information straight from the person. Records could be deceiving, especially since the general human populous had a talent for lying. She would know. "And why ever would we be spying on you? That's not to say you're boring, since I'm sure you do lots and lots of exciting things every day, but after a Hatching I doubt you would be doing anything really. Not to mention, to accuse us of spying you would have to admit you were doing something you shouldn't be, wouldn't you? I mean, why else would a pair of innocent girls like us be watching a greenrider go about his business if he wasn’t doing something interesting?" She studied her nails with an expression that could have possibly been bored.
Suddenly, it appeared that a thought had occurred to her. She looked up, head tilted to the side like an inquisitive hatchling. "You aren't doing something interesting and secretive, are you?" C'ren wouldn't tell her of course – Elae had already told her that he acted like a cynical old man – but she had learned that if you talked enough people eventually got fed up with you and left. Usually they forgot to punish you, which was an added bonus. This technique proved very effective Kallista, who looked particularly angry. Probably because they had interrupted her secret alone time with C'ren. Oh Nandeli was onto you two, you could bet on that.
Though she was used to having people storm off in a huff, she hadn't factored in upsetting the dragon. She didn't mind so much when people got angry at her (especially when she was only searching for the truth) but little hatchlings were another thing entirely. Dragons, she had always thought, were innocent creatures. It was always better to avoid upsetting them simply out of principle. "I'm sorry your little green is upset by our interruption." That was probably the most honest thing she'd said all day.

Bondyeth started when the little Queen gave a cry and took a step back, looking around for the source of fear. His tail swashed and his eyes whirled, flaring his wings as he continued to look around. The bronze never found a thing and simply settled into a stunned silence, clearly affronted. He finally looked back at the gold and tried to meet her eye. He was a bronze, after all. They were almost on the same level. Even he knew that. And a gold was far better company than a green. Hopefully His would realize that, too.
Why....why are you hiding? he finally asked, tipping his head. I don't see anything to hide from. Personally, Bondyeth knew nothing was worth hiding from, but perhaps someone was being mean to his clutch sister. She seemed rather shy and defending her would be an excellent way to show off his prowess.
H'dek sighed in relief when the gold's Bonded forgave him, the look on his face absolutely telling. "Bondyeth's...Bondyeth doesn' know 'ny restraint yet," he tried to explain, getting a sharp look from his dragon. It would seem the little bronze had no patience for apologizing. "Oh! Manners. I'm H'dek, and yourself?"

“Actually, I do mind.” Blunt and to the point. If they really wanted to know, they could just look it up. C’ren didn’t mind overly much people knowing his history---it wasn’t like there was anything Pern-shattering to hide---but he felt like being difficult. “Oh, I’m sorry. I must’ve gotten spying confused with ‘watching and following someone else while they’re not watching’. That is more along the lines of stalking, now isn’t it?” And that, as far as the Greenrider was concerned, was far more serious than spying.
“I don’t know why you would spy on me… not unless you’re spying on Kallista. Why don’t you answer that question?” Acid practically dripped from his voice. Luckily it was only metaphorical acid; if it had been actual acid, the rider probably would’ve had a fit over the mess. “And you’re upsetting both Astar and Ceylith.”
In his mind, that was even worse than stalking or spying.
Not that Ceylith looked particularly upset. The calm Green attempted to remain as such in order to comfort the younger hatchling, but it was troublesome. Occasionally, her eyes would swirl with yellow or, even more rarely, orange. C’ren was upset. Kallista was upset. Astar was upset. That sort of thing got to an emphatic dragon like Ceylith. She let out a soft wail before trying to comfort the little Green.
It’ll be alright… you will eat good food, not those girls. You deserve better, right? Don’t worry; C’ren will take care of them. He’ll report them to… to… oh, what’s her name. The Candidatemaster person. She’ll take care of them.
Oh, this was marvelous! C’ren and Kallista were clearly hiding something! And what else could they have to hide besides a tryst? It was delightfully salacious, wasn’t it? Still, she could tell that their chances of getting away unpunished were diminishing with every minute. The longer they stayed, the more likely it was that C’ren----or Kallista for that matter, or even both!----would report them.
Putting on a decidedly wounded expression, Elae pouted. “Well, we were just trying to be nice. We did just come here to return Vox, you know. We just happened to pause because we didn’t want to interrupt such a nice little scene. Since you two went off over here, we both figured you wanted to be alone. Not our place to interrupt such a thing. But now that you’ve been reunited with Vox, Greenrider C’ren, we will take our leave…” And go look up the records. There had to be something there. Flashing a smile at Kallista, Elae continued, “And good night to your little beauty, Kallista.”

At least they know how pretty I am. Astarteth replied. If they got me food I might forgive them.
Kallista, however, did not think she would be able to let their behavior slide so easily. Especially when she could see the wheels spinning so rapidly in their heads. Looking back and forth between the two, she tried to decide if it was worth making one more angry remark but chose not too. As she started to walk away, Kallista heard the other girl's apology and shrugged. Manners, her father once told her, were very important to keep about you.
They are bad girls. And don't be nice. I want a nice piece of meat. Maybe C'ren will be nice and bring you some. Astarteth replied, somewhat mollified.
"I'm sure Vox was foremost on your minds. Thank you for your apology. Come Astar, time to eat." And with that, Kallista walked back towards dining tables. Astarteth flicked her tongue at them as if to mock them both. Good riddance.
"See you around sometime, C'ren. I hope Ceylith's night, and yours, manages to get better." And then, she was out of hearing range.

She had had a feeling he would say that. Sigh. Boys could be so troublesome, no matter how old they got. This one must be in his late twenties and already he was such a stick in the mud. Honestly. What did a girl have to do to get some decent information around here? Clearly she needed some new tactics when it came to these greenriders. Maybe she should befriend some tall, dark and handsome men. Every greenrider liked their men tall, dark and handsome, right?
Following Elae's lead, Nandeli's expression moved from innocent to hurt. How could he accuse her of stalking? Didn't he know that she was the best information collector the Weyr had to offer? Well, see if the whole Weyr didn't know he was two-timing a pair of girls who were here to be candidates. She might have kept the secret for a day or two but this one was going straight to the kitchen staff once she and Elae confirmed their suspicions. And if he wanted to tattle on her then she would just have to tell the Candidatemaster that C'ren was picking on them because they didn't Impress Greens and Kallista had. Clearly he was just disappointed that Elae, the girl he had so painstakingly Searched, had not Impressed and was taking out his frustration on her. Nandeli had a story for everything.
Kallista got a cheery wave at her back, before Nan returned her attention to C'ren. "Unfortunately, we do have to leave. If you'll excuse us, Greenriders." Nodding to Elae, she turned and began heading back the way they came. Since C'ren wasn't going to tell her where he was from then she and Elae were just going to have to find out on their own. He would have spared himself a lot of trouble by just answering her question, but men always had to be difficult. While they were still in earshot, Nandeli called over her shoulder, "You really did look nice together in your little private moment!" Always the supporter of secret relationships.
With them dealt with, Nan nudged her friend. "To the Records?"

Oh, C’ren was quite certain his night would get a whole lot better in a few moments, mostly because he was hoping the others would leave soon enough. And then he and Ceylith could retire for the night. He didn’t respond to Nan’s ‘polite’ words, since he was damn sure they were completely hollow. Yes, so ‘unfortunate’ that they had to leave now. He did, however, cringe at her next words, the comment on how ‘nice’ he and Kallista had looked together. The nerve!
First of all, he was more inclined towards men. Men. As in ‘around his own age’. Kallista fulfilled neither requirement. “Good night, Kallista and Astar,” he said, turning back to Ceylith to try and calm her down. She was far more important than some silly girls gossiping.
Clearly, he had yet to truly run into Nan and her rumor-mongering.
Well, at least everything was resolved without violence. Ceylith sighed and shook her head slightly. She was certain that this wasn’t the last they had heard of the girls… but, it probably wasn’t important. It wasn’t like C’ren hadn’t been the focus of rumors before. She nudged C’ren slightly, urging him to get on her back so they could return to their weyr. Thankfully, it seemed that her Mine wasn’t inclined to argue any more tonight.
“Good night!” Elae said cheerfully, as if she wasn’t getting the cold shoulder from both Kallista and C’ren. Once she and Nan were a safe distance away, she said to her friend, “See what I mean? Colder than between that one. Or at least he pretends…”
“To the records, my dear! Lead on!” she waved one hand gallantly and mock-bowed to Nan, inviting her to lead the way to the Records. At this hour----on a Hatching day nonetheless!---the Records would be full of people bustling about. So many new names to record and cross-check and things of that sort. Surely no one would notice two curious girls snooping about?

Khunoth considered taking a swipe at the haughty green, then reconsidered. He was a larger dragon, after all, and may hurt her. A long sneer accompanied the thought, and he merely sniffed in response to her comments. Tada was noticeably uneasy, and she trilled uncertainly when he shifted away from his green clutchsister, nearly unsettling her. Charity? Hah! Small ideas for a small mind. Go ahead and keep thinking that you silly wherry. He said, mantling his wings in minor irritation.
Gh'lan wondered how serious Haanyath's temper towards flits could be, given how young she was, but decided that he would heed the warning. His call to Khunoth went mostly answered, just a rumble in the back of his mind that reminded him of a distant thunderstorm. Inadvertently, he was struck with the best way to describe his new life partner. A storm cloud, boiling over the horizon ready to spew lightning and rain at any moment. Blessedly, neither Khunoth nor T'ka noticed his sudden thunderstruck [removed](mostly since T'ka had already walked away and Khunoth was dwelling too much within his own superiority) so he quickly finished filling his plates. Weaving back to the table proved a little harder then he though it had any right to be, but he did eventually make it back; sitting down with a dull thump right next to T'ka. Tada was on the table in an instant, leading Gh'lan to believe she had betweened there, and was staring at the plates of meatrolls intently. Grinning, he waved her over to her own plate and resumed his conversation with T'ka.
"If you don't mind my asking, " he started, taking a bite out of a meatroll. "Where'd you come from before?" He continued, chewing thoughtfully while watching Khunoth watch him and Haanyath. You'll go cross-eyed doing that Khunoth.
Unlikely.

Haanyath snickered at her brother. <I can do this to you, I can only imagine what you will be like when faced with thread!>> She let out a bark of laughter at the end of her statement mentally, as she slid over to T'ka, worming her way under the bench T'ka was sitting on, staring smugly out at Khunoth.
T'ka, unaware to her dragon's teasings or illwords, chewed her food even as she chewed over her response. She swallowed, and tapped her chin with a long, calloused forefinger, and then shrugged. "I was a smith, I suppose," she gestured at herself with a smirk. "I certainly have the build for it. I should have been a journeyman too." She voraciously tore into a hunk of bread, getting a few mouthfuls in before continuing. "But there is...a bit of ill will amongst the smith hall directed towards females. They don't think I'm capable." From under the table, Haanyath coughed loudly, a mixture of a snarrl and a laugh. It was quite an peculiar noise.
"I suppose it's only fair now that I ask you where your origins lie?" T'ka offered with a smile, trying to change the subject. Despite Haanyath, and the fact that she would never have to deal with prejudice smiths again, it was still a bit painful for her to discuss.
Xythe and Daeok squeaked, eyeing Tada even as they stuffed their faces from T'ka's plate. They were always eager for playmates. <> She sent them a general picture of that day with the wood, when T'ka had first met Gh'lan. Xythe seemed to perk up with new recollection, while Daeok seemed to hardly ponder it. After all, there was food to be had!

Look who's throwing insults now. Loathsome green. Khunoth snarled, flashing his barely formed baby teeth at Haanyath. He stayed where he was though, sitting back on his hind legs proudly, matching his clutchsister's smug look tit for tat with a glare of his own. He certainly didn't need a bench or his rider to defend him!
Gh'lan started at 'smith' but kept quiet long enough to let her finish. He could sincerely sympathize with her, as he often thought he should have made journeyman himself, but he couldn't fathom being targeted like she had. All the women he'd ever dealt with had been nice enough. Granted, he hadn't met more then two or three smithcraftswomen, and all three of them had been quite intimidating, the nice ones he realized.. had always been holders. "That, is a real shame T'ka. Not sure what else to say to that." He said, watching Tada gobble a meatroll morosely. "Especially since I to was a smith, though not in the traditional sense." When Tada looked ready to inhale a particularly large piece whole, he absently took it from her and broke it into pieces before continuing. "You'd call us Starsmiths these days, we watch the skies and predict what we can from them. " Not that he had done a great deal of predicting, just copying notes and drafting timetables for the arrival of thread. unlike many holders, his craft, like the Dragonriders, KNEW thread would return.

<<. Perhaps you are jealous that I am sleek and small and beautiful and green, and you are too large and rotund to fit under benches?>> Haanyath snickered, and rolled over onto her belly, starying at Khunoth upside-down. She was happy and full. She was a little bit more playful, a little bit more thoughtful than usual, though that wasn't saying much. Still, it was something that she was putting together even a few large words a sentence. Haanyath wasn't given to verbal battles. She stifled a yawn, blinking a few times.
It was getting late for a little dragonet, and she was full, and warm, which wasn't helping her stay awake. She wiggled a little, keeping herself awake, determined not to show weakness to her only sibling. She was Haanyath the mighty! Better than any queen. She didn't want brother to think lowly of her.
"Starsmithing eh? I tried, but I could never get into that. I guess I'm too preoccupied with the here and now, that trying to think about things so far away is beyond me." She shrugged and chuckled, chewing on a hunk of bread. After all her time at the Weyr, she still adored the food here. She 'accidentally' pushed a piece of fat she didn't want off of the table, which Haanyath snatched. Haanyath wasn't the least bit picky about food.
"That's not to say I'm not curious though. Tell me, what do you learn, or study as a starsmith? And is it true..." she lowered her voice, as if her next words were curses or blasphemy, "Is there really going to be thread again?" Thread...it was so hard to imagine. Was it real? Certainly it was unlikely it was a myth, there was too much history, but...what was it like? It was thrilling and a curiousity. In a strange way...she hoped for it, wanted it. What better way to show those stupid smith boys that she was better, than to ride a flaming dragon into battle against thread?
