The Walls We Raise

Tian Yue watched as the boy slept, curled at the edge of the Dragon's own large bed, as if he was afraid to mark too much of it with his human presence. Small, curled, afraid - that was all he'd ever seen out of Evin.

The boy shifted in his sleep, and Tian Yue abruptly felt like a voyeur. Shaking his head, he backed out of the room and tried to do something else, but his thoughts kept returning to their original pattern. When would the boy wake up? Sleep was all very well and good, but... there wasn't very much he could do while Evin was asleep!

I want to know what's wrong so I can fix it... and to do that, he has to talk to me. His tail lashed back and forth, rustling his robes. And once I know - then what? How much can I do?

Tian Yue paced, then made himself sit down on the couch. Toki would never forgive him if he wore a rut in the floor. There was simply too much to do and too much to avoid doing and thinking - no sign of his brothers or his sister anywhere, and yet he'd busied his life with mortals and lovers and Aoide such that he felt unable to leave in search of them. And here he'd taken on yet another burden... why? To make himself feel better?

I need grounding. I need to be myself - I may know who I am, now, but what good is knowing when I never get a chance to be? Where the hell are you, Morgan? For a moment there was a surge of selfishness - how could she leave, when he needed her to remind him of so many things?

A soft noise cut into his thoughts, and Tian Yue looked up quickly to see Evin standing in the doorway, his eyes wide. The boy slid down into an awkward bow almost immediately. "Lord."

"Oh, enough with that nonsense - yes, I am a god, yes - I know that I am, and I know you know. Let that be enough for now." Tian Yue nodded towards the nearest armchair. "Come, sit down."

Evin edged his way nervously across the room and sat down, shifting awkwardly every few seconds. "W-what do you want?" he said, after a moment.

"To apologize," Tian Yue began, and Evin looked startled. "Shartha is one of my court, and she's treated you shamefully - I feel responsible. I should have stepped in sooner, realized how deep her feelings ran before now. I'm sorry, Evin."

"L-lord, I..." The boy looked down at his hands. "In my village, we were taught that to be taken by a dragon was death. We mourned all those taken as if they had died, even if we saw them from a distance later - it was only their shell that remained... and I believed it. I felt like a shell from the moment..." His voice trailed off, and he pressed one hand to his chest. "But when you did your magic, I felt like... like myself again."

"Good. I hope you can feel like yourself all the time. Everyone... everyone should be able to have that, even if it is all they have." Tian Yue smiled, softly. "Can you tell me?"

"Tell you what?" Evin tilted his head to one side.

"Everything. About your world, about dragons... about Shartha. Everything."

Evin looked confused for a moment, then nodded and began to speak. He spoke of villages clinging to life high in the mountains, barely eking a living - but it was worth it for the freedom, the love of high stone and sky, the wealth of metal in buried in the rock. He spoke of dragons, wild and wingless, and their quest for flight. He spoke of the raids, of the distant sight of those he once knew now bound to dragons, and how the elders would never respond to his young pleas to go after them and save them.

"... and when the dragon - Shartha - grabbed Isera, I..." Evin looked down. "You're not supposed to fight, but I couldn't let it happen... I hadn't saved anyone, hadn't been able to... I had to try, so I drew my bow and shot an arrow into the dragon's flank." He sighed. "She dropped Isera, but she came for me." The boy shifted and tugged at his tunic, lifting it up so Tian Yue could see the five angry red scars around his heart. "She bound me, and then brought me here..."

His voice trailed off, and Tian Yue made a soft, sympathetic sound. "This place is very different from the one you knew, isn't it? Are there many gods in your world?"

"Yeah. Too many, the elder thought - we didn't see many priests or anything up as high as we were..." Evin gave Tian Yue a strange look. "At first I thought you were a Reborn - that's when a human and dragon get so close that they literally merge into one being." He looked uncomfortable.

Tian Yue chuckled, but there was a trace of irony in the sound. More right than you know. "I am a Dragon King. All my brothers and my sister have two shapes as well. It is simply how we are."

"I know that now... it's going to take a while for me to get used to it..." Evin looked startled, suddenly, then bowed his head. "I'm sorry. I overstep myself."

"No you don't," Tian Yue said, firmly. He could practically see the boy remembering his 'place', shrinking away, trying to turn back into the trembling thing he'd become - what Shartha had made him. "I wouldn't try speaking candidly to any deity you should meet, but Evin - you're Shartha's, and therefore mine as well. You are part of the court of Tien Lung."

"I... I see," Evin said, but his tone was withdrawn, and Tian Yue sighed inwardly. He'd lost it now, but the boy had remembered how to be himself, how to not be crushed by the weight of Shartha and this world and this Age... even if only for a moment.

It's something. I did something. Only for a moment, but I did.

Grains of Sand

It was done. Tian Yue had dropped Evin back off at Shartha's den a few hours ago. The pair were not yet truly healed, but it was something that could not be forced, at least not by a god whose purest power did not lie in that area. Still, there had been moments, and Shartha had resolved to treat the boy with more kindness and dignity. With time, they could rebuild and change...

Time. So much depends on time. The healing of souls, the rising of my power... the rising of other powers. Tien. Phaedra. It spins on towards blessing and doom. And maybe only doom, if the other Dragon Kings could not be brought together.

Still, the meager success with Shartha and Evin had not, ultimately, lessened Tian Yue's restlessness. He flew in the dragonshape he had worn to Shartha's den, twining his way this way and that over the bleak landscape. This time he had gone far from the city, specifically avoiding the museum that Phaedra's gem had come from. If he thought too hard about the vault there, drenched in blood and fear, with the waxy declaration on the door... god or not, the entire thing sent a shiver down his tail. Creepy was creepy no matter how you sliced it.

Instead, he'd spent an hour circling over the living forest, admiring the green of it and enjoying the soft feel of another god's power spreading in protection over the land. It wasn't as good as his own once was, of course, but it was an admirable effort all the same. There was a temple there feeding whichever god it was, and worshipers therein...

And that thought had driven him here. One follower that's not an ancient thrall or bound to another god... just one, but... The dull glint of the Cosmodrome drew closer as Tian Yue flew. Perhaps once it might have been considered a temple, if one to many gods, but now it was nearly derelict and housed a sizable refugee population.

To his delight, he heard a cry as he dipped down to land near the complex. "Tian Yue!" A figure was standing below, waving both arms and bouncing up and down, and he let out a pleased rumble before circling and landing.

Penny was practically on top of him within seconds, her lopsided face bright with a smile as she hugged him tightly around his neck. "You came back!"

"Of course," he rumbled, affectionately.

She released him and stepped back, brushing an escaped wisp of hair back behind one ear. "I knew you would."

"Oh? Was it some mystical feeling deep in your soul?" Tian Yue sat back on his haunches, amused.

"Nah, it was just a not-at-all-mystical bleep on the Bandit's sensors." Penny grinned. "The Captain is busy working on the ol' girl, but he sends his regards."

"I bet he does." The dragon snorted, then settled. "Are the two of you well?"

"Mmm, pretty good, pretty good." Penny moved to sit down in front of him. "The gold and jewels you gave us have made things better. The Captain was able to trade for some better parts for the Bandit, and we got a more steady supply of food now. How about you?"

"Better, in some ways. Not, in others. Being a god is confusing, Penny." He made a face.

"Yeah, I guess it is." She smiled, then paused for a long moment. "I, um. Funny question. You... were you always a god? I mean, um. I don't doubt you or anything," Penny explained, quickly, her face slightly flushed.

"I know you don't. I can feel it," Tian Yue said, gently. "And... no, not quite. Not always." He cringed inwardly and prepared to explain.

But to his surprised, she just nodded. "That's what Rio said. Do you know him? He's the God of Love."

"I don't think we've met... but you have?" Tian Yue gave her a startled look.

"Yes! I went to the big temple, what's it called, Pantheon, looking, and..." Her voice trailed away as she caught sight of the look on Tian Yue's face. Dragonform or no, the sudden, stricken look of concern was unmistakable.

"Penny, I..." He paused, then shook his head. "I know you believe in me and want to believe in other gods of what you see as good and right... but... please, please, stay away from that place."

"Why?" She was blunt, and her look was skeptical. "Nothing happened to me."

"There are gods that might well hurt you there, Penny. I don't want anything to happen to you. Rough as he is, I don't think the Captain could bear losing you." I don't think I could, either.

"But... Rio was so nice, like you..." She sighed. "I'll be careful."

Tian Yue noted that, and that she hadn't said she'd stay away... but he couldn't order her. That wasn't the kind of relationship they shared. Not yet, not now. "Please do. I want to protect you as I will someday protect all my followers... but right now, you're all I have."

Penny fiddled with the end of her braid. "What about your lover?"

Tian Yue's tail flicked back and forth. "She has been claimed by a goddess. Did Rio explain to you?"

The girl nodded. "He did... oh, Tian Yue, I'm so sorry... I know what it's like to lose a lover..." She bit her lip.

"She's not gone yet. Maybe she won't be. It's complicated..." Tian Yue shifted, awkwardly. "Can I just... talk to you, for a second?"

A smile quirked on Penny's lips. "Aren't you already?"

He made a face. "More seconds, then."

"Sure." She grinned, and made a swishing motion with her hand. "You have my permission."

"Thank you," Tian Yue snorted, then sighed. "I wanted to talk to you because it seems like you're the only one I can talk to like this these days."

Penny tilted her head to one side. "Talk like how?"

"You know. Just... talk. Since my lover got claimed by her goddess, it hasn't been quite the same, and she's been gone for a while." He tossed his head, grumpily. "As she should, but I miss her. Without her... I keep forgetting how to be myself. As I am, here."

"You're not acting that much different. More... confident, maybe. Well, not this second." Penny made a face back at him, and he snorted. "But. You know. I like your way of being a god. Rio's too." She fiddled more with the tip of her braid.

"I can't do it among the other gods, though. It's not... grand and noble and divine enough. Something in me wants to turn down other roads and worry about everything... take joy in too little. Like Shaiming was before he met Universe."

"Shaiming?"

"I'll explain that to you later, okay? Not now." To his relief, she just nodded. "I just haven't had any chance, any freedom - I have to be great and grand for the other gods. For my Lord I must live up to being Tien Lung... for the others I must be a noble Dragon King. Even at home..." No, no, he wasn't going to explain Shartha and Lao Shu, and definitely not Nebula and Phaedra. He was avoiding that last topic in particular. "I feel stuck and I'm not sure what to do. Isn't it silly?"

"No, it's not silly... Rio said that.. let me think, try and remember the words he used.." Penny looked thoughtful. "That the gods could be glorious and dangerous but they could also be human, and that wasn't bad..."

Tian Yue opened his mouth to reply, then paused. "Did he so?"

"Yeah. I liked him. I like you, too." She leaned forward and planted a chaste kiss on the tip of his muzzle, then grinned. "Not like that, you know. Marten and all. But I like you. I think you're a fine god how you are, and you shouldn't let yourself get stuffed into other people's expectations of how you should be. And that's that!" She nodded firmly.

"Oh, well then. Clearly it's all settled," he replied, with a snort, and then smiled back. "Love, hm? Wise words. Wise words indeed," he added, to himself.

Through Alien Eyes

Perri Indiya
Illario returned to the strange, burnt-out land out of a sense of duty to the future and the people he had left behind in it. At the moment Colin was making him plenty happy to let his work towards returning to where and when he was supposed to be slide a bit, but that wasn't fair. And he did want to go home, mostly. He just really wanted to keep a window open so he could pop back and be with his roommate, too. Time travel continued to be complicated.

He found himself sitting in the ashes on the edge of the lake after wandering around for almost an hour, at a loss of what to look for and none too motivated to figure it out. Sigh. For all its destruction, this place was rather peaceful in its deserted state. The alien let his hood slip off, wiggling his antennae happily in the sunlight.

Sosiqui
Out walking, this time - seeing the scope of the ruined world was getting to the dragon. It was too overwhelming to think about the future in terms of countries, continents, worlds, universes, multiverses. Far better to focus in on cities, towns, villages, streets, homes, individuals. Tian Yue walked deep in thought, his tail swishing gently in the ashes as he moved. The ash would probably stain the edges of his robes some, thus provoking Toki and providing the day's drama.

Tian Yue paused in his thoughts as he spotted the other figure, then tilted his head to one side as he saw the other's hood fall and a set of... antennae...? poke out. The whole thing looked familiar, and pinged on bits of Crispin's memory. Star Trek, right? ... I didn't think that was real...?

Well, he was a god now. If THAT could be real, why not Trek? Interested now, Tian Yue padded over to the other being. "Greetings," he offered, trying not to be too obvious about his curiosity.

Perri Indiya
After his fortuitous encounter with Morgan, Illa found himself far less worried than he should be about the sound of approaching footsteps and the voice that followed them. Remember Andorian Freak Out Day? He did, but it had ended really well. Damn it. He was going to walk himself straight into a government lab with probey things.

He turned, and smiled, standing so he could see this other person better. Looked fairly human, although the ears were off. Vulcan? Romulan? A descendant? Judging from the lack of giant shoulder pads probably vulcan. He wasn't the only one here! This was awesome! In the sense that it could help him get home eventually, anyway. "Hey! When did you get here?"

Sosiqui
Tian Yue blinked, taken aback by the odd welcome. As if the... what was it? Andor-something, along those lines. As if the alien recognized him. "Uh... get here? I'm sorry; should I know you?" He did offer the other a smile, though.

Perri Indiya
"Oh, ha, sorry. Normal people introduce themselves before they launch headlong into conversation. I'm Illario Teska." He held out a hand, startled for a moment by the smile. Not a full-blooded Vulcan then. "I've been stranded here long enough that seeing a familiar species knocks me for a loop. Did you have a transporter accident too? What year are you from?"

Sosiqui
Familiar species...? Tian Yue's confusion only deepened for a moment, but then... Oh. Pointed ears. Oh dear. The dragon was deeply glad he hadn't given into his first silly impulse of greeting the alien with 'Live long and prosper'. That would have only confused matters worse.

"I'm sorry... I'm not what you think I am," he said, with a chuckle. "I'm not an extraterrestrial species, unfortunately, though I do recognize your kind. But I have a tail, see?" He shifted his robes just enough so that the other could see the tail beneath.

Perri Indiya
Illa's face fell before he caught himself, another avenue of escape gone. Even if Vulcans weren't the most fun people to hang out with, they at least knew a lot of things, particularly about science. Back to the drawing board on the going-homefront, then.

"Sorry for the confusion." He sighed, before reminding himself to buck up. It wasn't this person's fault he wasn't what the Andorian wanted to be. And he had a tail. A big, scaly tail. That was... weird.

"So you do." He said as calmly as possible. "Are you a changeling of some kind?"

Sosiqui
"Don't worry about it. And no... no, not a changeling." The idea amused the dragon, though, and he looked curiously at the alien. "Were you particularly looking for a Vulcan, for some reason?"

Perri Indiya
"Then what are you?" He blurted out, coloring a bit when he realized how rude he was being. When did the filter between his brain and his mouth break? Probably when he saw the tail.

Just... plow forward! Yeah! That was the ticket. "Um, no, not looking for a Vulcan specifically. I'm just trying to figure out how to get home, and they tend to be pretty helpful from a technical stand point. You know, because they're smart and logical and stuff."

Sosiqui
"Ah, you're stuck here? I'm sorry," Tian Yue said, sympathetically. "I do know of a small spaceport not too far from here, but there aren't many functional ships, and I'm sure they're not of the... er... quality you're used to." The majority of the ships around the Cosmodrome certainly didn't resemble anything he'd ever seen on TV, unless you counted garbage scows or ratty ships that usually blew up before the end of the episode.

Perri Indiya
The Andorian brightened for a moment, but faded just as quickly. "I doubt I could do much with any ship in less than good working order. I'm not an engineer, and even my pure scientific training isn't the most advanced. Thanks though."

He probably should go take a look but... well, he didn't want to get his hopes up. Or go there alone, and how did you ask your friend along to go somewhere that could probably lead to you leaving forever? Illa glanced at the fellow's face, and then back down at the tail. They looked so strange attached to the same person.

"So... are you a lizardman of some sort?"

Sosiqui
"Not quite. Dragon, actually... of a sort." Tian Yue smiled at the alien and held out one long-nailed hand. "My name is Tian Yue. And you?"

Perri Indiya
Butdragonsdon'texist- Illa shoved the hyperventilating part of his brain back and shook the man's hand. "Illario Teska. I apologize now if I freak out severely on you: alternate universes can be kind of weird."

Sosiqui
"I understand. I'm... from one myself, in a way. But I found it exciting. It was everything I ever dreamed of... well, scenery aside." Tian Yue made a face at their dilapidated surroundings.

Perri Indiya
Illa cocked his head. "I really hope you've seen cooler things than me. This has just turned out to be a rather traumatic past - although with one or two bright spots." Colin and Morgan were lovely, after all, and it wouldn't do to forget them.

"Well, I guess finding out that in other dimensions my time is a form of broadcast entertainment is a little cool."

Sosiqui
"That's... part of why I recognized what you were, yes," Tian Yue admitted with a laugh. "Strange, finding out what's real. Perhaps somewhere, sometime, everything is. But yes... when I got here, the magic, the circumstances, everything was what I wanted. I wanted to be a hero and save the world."

He looked up at the bruised sky. "I'm still working on that last one."

Perri Indiya
"Aren't dragon's the monsters in hero stories though? At least the Terran ones I've heard." Illario grinned, shrugging cheerfully. "It's probably just because armor isn't made in their size."

Sosiqui
"Not all stories. The Eastern tradition holds them as kings and protectors, which would be closer to the truth in the case of myself and my siblings." A smile quirked on Tian Yue's lips. "I'm working on that one, too."

Perri Indiya
The Andorian cocked his head. "Even with the whole moon-eating thing? Although if it was actually made of green cheese, I suppose he would have just been hungry."

Sosiqui
"No, no moon-eating. Destruction's influence does a good enough job of that without anyone's help." He made a face, and gestured at the damaged landscape around them.

Perri Indiya
"Destruction? Is that... a person's name?" It was odd to hear such a word used in the manner of a proper noun, since it was well known that no one named a kid that accurately outside of fiction. Unless s/he'd named themselves that, it which case they were kind of lame. At least attempt some creativity and make it 'Destructor' or something else in that vein. Effort was occasionally required.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue stared for a moment. He... he didn't know?

Oh dear.

He took a deep breath. "In a way. It is the name of the aspect of the Twin Crown, Lord Harmodius, that currently rules the world. Is it not so in the place you come from? Stars imploding, ruin, war, dissent, things of that nature?

Perri Indiya
"Uh, well, there was that war with the Dominion we just finished and that's taking some time to recuperate from but... stars implode a lot. It's in their nature. You come to the end and zup, boom, or fizzle." WTF was the Twin Crown? Why would a local king effect his universe? Illa tried very, very hard not to look completely befuddled and vapid, but with this sudden wave of strange it was hard.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue pointed up at the bruised sky. "See that? Two years ago, it was beautiful, vibrant, healthy... now look at it." He shook his head. There was no stronger proof he could offer than that. "No mortal hand did that. Same with this land - two years ago, it was green and alive. This town thrived. Such is the nature of Destruction's influence."

Perri Indiya
No mortal hand...? Ah. "Q trouble." He said, nodding sagely.

"They can be nasty creatures."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue sighed. This was starting to get a bit annoying. "No," he said, firmly. "God trouble. The gods are being reborn in force, and the Highest Lord of the Pantheon is influencing all worlds. Even yours, perhaps, when you get back to it. The decay will be small at first, but it is there, and it will grow over time until everything - everything - is like this place. The Gods and the Dragons are rising again."

For a moment, he hesitated - these robes were a decent set... but not too good, or else he wouldn't have worn them outside. Toki would be angry.

Toki could deal. For some reason, making this one understand was important.

Tian Yue shifted into his dragon form, feeling the cloth tear away around him, and he shook the shreds away, making a soft snarl as one loop caught in an uncomfortable place before he tore it away with one claw. He coiled there and peered down at the alien, but not unkindly.

"Do you see? I do not mean to scare you, and I will not harm you - but it is important, so very important that you understand. It may mean the difference between your life and your death, especially this close to the Pantheon. You must tread carefully."

Perri Indiya
"But gods are just stori..." The Andorian's voice faded away as the man with a dragon tail fell away into a giant, scaly beast. His antennae bent back over his hair in shock, and his eyes widened into white, shocky orbs. He stared up and up and up, the beast's words storing themselves in his brain to be better analyzed when things that couldn't happen weren't happening right in front of him. A stray logical part of his brain pointed out that at least now he could be sure he was in a different timeline.

"Eep." He managed in response, not able to think much farther.

Sosiqui
"I am sorry," Tian Yue rumbled, apologetically, and he settled down so that he wasn't towering quite so much over the alien. "But it is very dangerous to be unaware in these times. Gods are certainly not just stories. You're talking to one," he added, tilting his head to one side. "I don't mind, I know you're new to this place... but there are some among the gods who would have killed you for what you just began to say." He gave the alien a concerned, serious look. "I don't want any more deaths here, not if I can prevent it."

Perri Indiya
Nooooonononononononononno- Illa mentally slapped himself, not wanting his gibbering to escape into the wild and be heard by the... dragon in front of him. Gods? He tried to map the idea onto what he knew about Bajoran religion, as that was the main active faith he was aware of, but with snakey-lizardman in front of him that was rather difficult. It wasn't even close to the same. Stupid Terrans and their insistence of deity physicality!

"I can use the words 'god' or 'goddess' if that would make things better. And thanks for the concern." He mumbled, looking down at the ground as he worked on fitting his eyelids back over his eyes. Having been raised to believe in science and rational thought in the place of religion, such an act would rub him the wrong way, but he was plenty able to compromise if need be. He could pantomime belief, but he couldn't have any.

"So... this is godland or something?"

Sosiqui
"In a sense." The tip of Tian Yue's tail twitched back and forth for a moment. "The Pantheon, the place where the gods are being reborn, is very close. That's why the damage is so great here - it's near the epicenter of where Lord Destruction dwells. His influence is most powerful here. I am working on counteracting what I can, but..." He concentrated, and expanded out his aura shield around the alien for a moment. "Do you feel the difference?"

Perri Indiya
His antennae twitched, confused for a moment about where he was with the sudden change in stimuli. He tottered and caught himself, shaking his head as if to dispel the wave of dizziness. "Oog, yeah, warn me next time."

Sosiqui
"Oh, sorry," Tian Yue said, sheepishly. "The way you feel now is the way you should be feeling all the time - the way you probably did feel until about two years ago. The change was gradual, but now you can feel the sharp difference." He sighed. "Are you ready for me to drop the shield?"

Perri Indiya
The Andorian plopped himself down on the ground in preparation, not wanting to actually fall over this time. "It's okay - my spatial acuity directly effects my balance, so big sensory changes throw me off."

He frowned, testing the world around him. It was different, but not in a way he could verbally describe. Strange.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue waited until the alien was settled, then nodded. "Here it goes, then." He pulled the shield back in with a quiet sigh. Really, he could keep it around himself the entire time.. but that would be wrong, somehow. The power wasn't meant to benefit one being alone.

Once it was gone, he tilted his head curiously at the Andorian. "Can you tell the difference?"

Perri Indiya
Illa pulled his knees to his chest, closing his eyes and frowning as the chill hit him. The world took longer to settle this time, and when it did it left a bad taste in his mouth. He opened his eyes and stood slowly, brushing the ash from his clothes with disgust. "Yes. I wish I didn't. But how can myt- gods made u- living here change my universe? Alternate realities are discrete."

Sosiqui
"Because alternate realities, universes, worlds... all of those things exist," Tian Yue said, simply. "They exist, and therefore they are all connected, in a sense. The Twin Crown created All that Is - and he can destroy it, if he wishes." And may, he thought but did not say.

Best not to spring too much complication on the poor creature at once.

Perri Indiya
The alien frowned and shook his head, confusion and worry curdling into anger. "No! That isn't how it works! I know this, I've studied it- well, not as much as I could have but I do have an excellent grasp of complex Physics-"

He made an exasperated sound and crossed his arms, staring at the horizon and feeling bad for snapping. "I'm sorry, I just... well you can't very well expect me to take all this god and magic nonsense on faith, can you?"

Especially not when it lead to such horrible conclusions.

Sosiqui
"There is a goddess of Numbers; I'm sure she'd be more than happy to discuss physics with you," Tian Yue said, mildly. "It is a bit much if you've never known it before, I know. I was there myself once." He almost added long ago, but then it hadn't really been long ago, had it?

Perri Indiya
A bit much? The depth of the understatement was almost painful. "It's unbelievable."

He eyed the dragon over his shoulder, his skepticism pushing him to dig out facts. "Why are you all here? How did you come to be? Wish fulfillment?"

Sosiqui
"In a sense. One could say that you are the fulfillment of our wishes." Tian Yue grinned, then sobered. "You don't have to believe based on what I say alone. Test, seek, discover what is true for yourself, but take care. As I said, there has been enough death without adding more to the count."

He turned and flicked his tail behind him, the way he had come. "The Pantheon is that way. A great building, dark and surrounded by lava, though it was not always so. There is power there, and many more of the divine."

Perri Indiya
The Andorian doubted he was the 'fulfillment' of anyone's wishes, unless such creatures pined to be disbelieved. "I've been there. I only met my... friend Colin and Morgan out here. I don't think either of them is hiding a dragon's tail under their skirts."

Sosiqui
"Morgan?" Tian Yue's ears perked in interest. He didn't recognize the other name, but... "You've met her? I bet she recognized your species too, didn't she?" The dragon chuckled.

When did you meet her? Where? Do you know where she is now? A sudden flurry of questions left unasked, but he'd promised, hadn't he. Even if it was so very tempting.

Perri Indiya
He nodded, too distracted by his own anger and worry to notice the other's reaction. "She's the one who told me about the show. Nice girl. Is she going to die too?"

Sosiqui
Tian Yue's ears went back, nearly flat against his skull. "... Yes," he said, quietly. So someone else seemed to have explained the rest of the story - maybe Morgan herself. "She is going to die." The words were ash in his mouth.

The blunt statement made him squirm, inwardly. No wonder the Andorian was wary; no wonder they were all wary, or angry, like Captain Jax. The best proof of the gods' existence right now was evidenced in the utter ruin of mortal life; their rebirths forged from the devouring of mortal souls. For some, like himself, the idea had been scary but exciting.

For others, he was beginning to understand, it was loathsome. Not that he'd been excited about Tien's choice in hosts either, but... then there was Nebula's case, as well. "Some take without asking. Some, like myself, are taken willingly. I do not claim all deities - or even the concept - to be moral, only that I myself strive to be so."

He lifted his head as a thought occurred to him. "Is someone calling to you?" he asked, quietly.

Perri Indiya
Illa glanced over his shoulder at the beast, feeling very few pangs of regret for upsetting him. They were all to blame for the harm one of their kind did to another in his mind: he believed stringly in great power equalling more responsibility for using it correctly, and who else had the ability to police a 'god's' actions but one of their own? Let the dragon be unhappy. Misery did love company after all.

He thought of Colin, mottled skin, and wondered again how a jewel became embedded in a hip. "How the hell should I know? It's not as if they'd be pinging me on subspace or something."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue shook his head. There was a wall there, that much was clear, and he'd done what he could. Going around in circles wouldn't help either of them.

"Merely an idle thought - probably unfounded. But I have duties I must attend to." He hesitated. "I am the Dragon King Tien Lung. If by some strange chance you find yourself near the Pantheon, you are welcome in my halls." Because while I might be annoyed, I know I at least won't roast him for asking such questions.

Perri Indiya
Illa nodded, doing his best to smile. "Thanks. I think I'll grab something to eat before I pedal home." He pulled up his hood and trudged towards the compound, inwardly seething with anger and hurt. Parasites! Cruel, hungry, murderous parasites! And one of them was in Colin...

He ended up running the rest of the way to the door, the sharp air helping him not to cry.

The Yin and the Yang

"I think I met your opposite a few days ago."

"Really?" Penny gave Tian Yue a curious look. The girl was braiding her hair, looking out over one of the old waiting areas in the Cosmodrome. Not too far away, a small pack of curious children was involved in building yet another fort out of foam cushions torn forcibly from the old chairs. He and Penny were sitting in some of the only seats left untouched. It wasn't glamorous, not in the least, and his robes looked very out of place against the gritty background, but... it was reality. Moreso than the inside of his room, and also moreso than outside. Outside was just bleak, ruined, scraped bare. Reality happened now inside buildings, where mortals huddled together. They made reality, in a way.

"Mmm. You ever watch Star Trek?"

"I used to, but Jax and Marten would always make snide comments about how inaccurate it was." She smiled at the memory. "They made it no fun, so I stopped. How come?"

"I swear to g-... er..."

"To who?" Penny teased. "Yourself?"

"... Yeah, alright, I'll blaspheme myself. I swear to myself that I met an Andorian a couple days ago. Blue. Antennae."

"Huh." Penny tilted her head in his direction, then brought another strand of barely-tamed hair into the braid. "So my opposite is an alien?"

"Well... it was... not odd. Different, I guess." Tian Yue thought for a moment, then began to explain the encounter as Penny listened - everything, including the way he felt at the end. Guilty, almost. "Exactly the opposite of you, really," he finished. "And yet I still find myself caring. I'm afraid I'll go out one day and find him in a ditch because he disbelieved at the wrong deity."

"Sounds like Jax," Penny said, quietly, looping the tie around the bottom of the finished braid with a snap. "If he knew what you really were, he'd forget everything kind you've done and... I don't know what he'd do. Yell. Maybe worse."

"He yells at me anyway," Tian Yue said, ruefully, and when Penny opened her mouth, waved one hand at her. "Yes, I know it's not the same. But I feel bad."

"Hmm..." Penny looked thoughtful. "If I told you someone here in the Cosmodrome didn't like me, would you think less of me?"

"What? No, of course not. Sometimes people just don't get along, you know?"

"Did everyone like Crispin?"

Tian Yue snorted. "Hardly. Being a geek is only socially acceptable in college. Up until then..." He shook his head. "It's just how it was. It didn't bother me. Him. Whatever."

"Ah." She grinned and pointed one finger at him. "Then why are you so worried that not everyone likes you now?"

"... because... it's different?"

"Not really. Just because you have a different nature doesn't mean that the nature of those around you changes." Penny shrugged. "Not everyone has to like you, and it doesn't mean you're a failure or anything. Just like with mortals."

"Er..." Tian Yue tried to come up with a response, then looked sheepish. "Penny..."

"I'm right! I'm right, and you know it." Penny grinned and flashed a v-sign at him with her fingers. "Honestly, don't you have anyone to tell you this stuff?"

"In the Pantheon? My life is a soap opera, Penny. I should sell advertisements for the commercial breaks."

She laughed. "Right. Well, then, you just come on back to me when you need a smack. Got it, oh lord and master of the stars?"

"I should name you high priestess or something," Tian Yue said, with a grin.

"Ah, in a congregation of one? Such an honor."

"... Thanks, though," he added, after a moment. "I'm sorry."

"Hey, even gods need saving once in a while." Penny smiled softly and looked at the ground, fiddling with the end of her braid. "It's okay. I don't mind."

Little Girl Found

Sosiqui
Tian Yue was flying again, in dragonshape - he had so many to look for (and so many to not look for) that he had taken to going out every day, in an ever-widening arc away from the Pantheon itself. The past three days had netted nothing much other than the views of more devastation. But now, as he soared, he suddenly caught a weak flare of divine power from below.

What...?

Curious, he angled his flight downwards, peering until he spotted two figures below. They seemed to be struggling, he realized, after a moment. A deity attacking someone else? No... the soft breath of power was not coming from the attacker.

And then he recognized one of them. A chill of cold rage shot through him, and he turned his vague downward turn into a full dive, letting out a bellow of anger as he plummeted towards the pair.

Morgan!

"Release her, or I swear by the Twin Crown I will see you dead in my claws!" he roared, landing in a skid and twining about in one sinuous movement to challenge her attacker. Simultaneously, he thew every shield at his command around the girl.

No, not Morgan, he realized as his power enfolded her. Tien.

But it was close enough for him, for now.

Thabara
The Dragon's sudden appearance was unexpected and he let go of the earthen jug in his right, the heavy vessel smashing to pieces and it's intoxicating content spilling all over the cracked ground - there had indeed been a few dead snakes within. However, it happened less out of surprise but the intent to free his hand to weave an ancient magical gesture into the air, conjuring up a shield of his own. The crackle of the two protective spells conflicting with each other was enough to tell him that the other's shield was quite powerful.

"I know what you used to look like underneath your mask," he hissed into the girl's ear before he abruptly let go of her and pushed her towards the dragon. There was something eerily familiar about the draconic beast, but it took him a moment before he could place that familiarity because it was so diminished in shape and form in contrast to its former glory. Ah. Tien Lung. Dragon King.

"I see you already found yourself a toy to be your knight in shining armor, and the World Shield no less!" He clearly was mocking her, his voice laced with acid. "But he fails, Tien, he fails. The silver city of Tanagra, the continent Pereth D'ain, the underground cities of Laer.. He couldn't protect them." He sneered, his dark eyes settled on the dragon. "I saw the victims of your failures, dragon, I saw them all."

mistalina13
How would you....know that? The Trickster's presence faded into the background, her saved energy having been nearly exhausted for the time being.

Morgan stumbled, having been forced back into control when Tien's presence retreated. The exhaustion of Tien's outburst rapidly began to catch up with her and she nearly fell back onto the paving stones.

"Leave my beloved alone, you miserable creature!"

She managed to get to her feet again and retreated to Tian Yue's side.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue hissed low at the interloper, flicking his tail protectively around Morgan as she came to his side. "Have you? Well, I have seen Universe bound and branded, and my Lord the Twin Crown grievously injured because I was not there. What are all your names to that?" He lifted his head and stared into the man's odd, deep-set eyes. "The blade-edges of your words are old and broken. I am Tien Lung reforged and you hold no power over me. This girl is under my protection." Bless you, Shaiming, for giving me that freedom from the daggers of Tien Lung's past.

Under Tian Yue's rage ran a current of thought, lightning-quick. Someone from the goddess' past, it seemed - and his as well? But he remembered no such thing. His nose twitched slightly at the smell of decay.

Thabara
The stranger's dark eyes narrowed at Tian Yue's words. 'Tien Lung reforged'?

"I see," he said finally - slowly, cautiously. He'd heard the rumors, but paid little attention to them since he hadn't thought them to be true. "Seems like I've been somewhat out of the loop with what's been going on in the Pantheon. My bad." He grinned, not seeming overly bothered by that revelation. "Explains why you would be interested in her at all."

Her. Clearly, it was the girl the dragon was interested in, not the goddess.

"It doesn't matter," he said, hooking his thumbs into the belt of his pants and proudly raising his chin. "The girl will be gone soon enough. Once She gets stronger, she'll come to seek me out on her own."

mistalina13
Morgan reached over to rest a hand on Tian Yue's neck and she sighed. This stranger was right, Tien was getting stronger.

See if he will give you a name...

"Huh, oh, okay." She murmured. Her hand ran idly over Tian Yue's scales as she let her gaze slide back to the stranger.

"She's asking for a name, care to oblige?" Morgan pushed her glasses up on her nose with her free hand.

Sosiqui
"If she seeks you out, that is her own affair, and none of mine unless Tien chooses to ask for my protection." Tian Yue flicked a glance over at Morgan. He had never seen the goddess take control before, and the thought gave him a pang of regret as the adrenaline calmed in his mind. But that was the way things worked, as he knew only too well.

The rest of the matter was Tien's alone. He merely sat, ready to protect Morgan if he was needed, but he would not interfere in the goddess' plans. Whoever this exceptionally stinky old man was, he was clearly someone from the past, with his lists of dead names and interest in a goddess only newly reborn.

Thabara
"Fine with me," the stranger said, nodding briefly, the tone of his voice filled with obvious dislike and arrogance as he spoke to the dragon king.

"Depends," he said, turning slightly to address Morgan. Glasses, of all things. No wonder 'She' hasn't made her wear a mask yet.. That was amusing, somehow. "Is there anything, anything you could offer me in return?"

mistalina13
Offer him a favor, Morgan, from me. The feeling of familiarity with the stranger surfaced again. Faint flickers of memory from times of old, still plagued by too many shadows.

"A favor, from Tien." Morgan took a deep breath, trying to stay relaxed. She was grateful Tian Yue had come looking for her, she needed his strength right now.

Thabara
He hadn't planned to disclose anything to her, merely to enjoy himself while he taunted her, mocked her.. But a favor? That was just too good to be true. It also made it painfully obvious that the goddess was still far from being her old self yet - in the days of old she wouldn't have made an offer as careless as this one. A powerful thing, that, a favor - especially if offered by a god.

"A favor, just like that?" he asked, inwardly berating himself that he was probably letting this excellent trade slip through his fingers. "You're not going to try and put a limit on it, or to haggle?" He asked ironically and raised a brow. Why, in Hades' name, was he actually trying to warn her? Guilt perhaps. For the role he had played back then.

mistalina13
"No killing." Morgan continued to run her fingers across Tian Yue's scales to reassure herself that he was actually there. If she was still around when this favor was fulfilled, she didn't want to be a witness to killing.

Were I strong enough, you would not have to deal with this...stranger at all.

Thabara
Fool.

A wicked grin spread on his face, revealing irregular rows of teeth - some missing, some blackened, the ones remaining whole of a sick yellowish color and seeming way too sharp.

Dangerous. Hungry. Shark-like.

Such a fool. Definitely not her old self yet again.

"A kiss it shall be then," he purred, enjoying himself immensely. Oh, he might get stomped on by the Dragon for this, but this borrowed body wouldn't last much longer anyway so he didn't mind.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue's tail lashed once, lightly, then lay still again. He didn't like the idea of that... creature... touching Morgan, and especially kissing her, but... the Trickster's business was her own. It wasn't his place to interfere more than he already had.

But it didn't mean he had to like it.

mistalina13
Her expression slightly, gaze narrowing. If one knew what to look for, they would see a hint of the old Tien. The hand on Tian Yue's scales slipped away. Mine host, I need your help.

You have got to be kidding me.

I wish I was.

At this moment Morgan wished she was gone or at least able to retreat further. The thought of kissing that creature disgusted her.

You owe me big time!

A few steps brought her close enough.

Get it over with. Quickly.

"Very well." The voice wavered between that of the host and goddess.

Thabara
His embrace was surprisingly gentle, but the look he shot at Tian Yue as he peered at him over Morgan's shoulder, the grin he flashed at him, could be interpreted as nothing else but a challenge.

So, her lover was actually sticking to the protocol? How utterly boring, just like a certain someone he knew..

The kiss.. it was short. Passionate, but short. Perhaps because he felt pity on some level for Tien's innocent host who had been dragged into this against her will. It might even have been a good kiss if it hadn't been for the taste of death, the odor of death, the touch of death.

mistalina13
Tien was hit with the same flashes of memory as she had been when Echo had mentioned the masks.

Kiss. Passion. Affection. Love?

So many shadows, so many pieces missing. Not enough answers. Her presence faded suddenly, back to that of a looming shadow.

Morgan's skin blanched and she pulled away, stumbling backward and nearly falling down as she fought off her gag reflex. She couldn't help but shutter.

Is he...dead?

"Now there is something you owe Her."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue quickly shifted to steady his lover, recoiling inwardly even as she did. What a thing to ask for... what kind of history did this man have with the Trickster?

Thabara
"Angmar. It is the first name I bore, and my true one. Appreciate it, for names have power. Unfortunately it is not the one I'm most commonly known by nowadays." He smirked. "Nonetheless, perhaps you will be able to dig something up in that fancy library of yours. If not, there will certainly other chances, other exchanges of favors." The stranger flourished a bow and added mockingly: "Perhaps I will have found a body by then which is more pleasing for your eyes to look at."

mistalina13
Morgan leaned against the Dragon and swallowed nervously. Hopefully there would be no more favors until she was gone. She might as well have been kissing a corpse...which was just...wrong.

Angmar? And old memory stirred, but the wisps vanished before she could catch them. That name was familiar, very familiar. Where does he fit into this puzzle?

She resisted the urge to snort and roll her eyes at that last comment, obviously the pleasantry and mocking were for Tien, not her.

Thabara
"More pleasing to touch as well," 'Angmar' added with a grin, when goddess and girl seemed to have chosen to stay silent. Idly he kicked against the remnants of the earthen jug and the dead, soaked reptiles with the tip of his boot. Shame he hadn't thought of asking for the snake. At another time perhaps..

"Well then, I shall be off," he said, turning and waving over his shoulder. "This hasn't turned out to be as amusing or interesting as I thought it would. Another time then, perhaps when you remember more.."

mistalina13
Part of her was tempted to call out to him, tell him to stay in the hopes of learning more. Perhaps Tien was encroaching on her moreso than she originally thought. She kept quiet and simply stared after him as he walked away.

We will meet again, when I am more whole.

Morgan waited until Angmar was out of sight before looking back at Tian Yue and she couldn't keep the sadness from her expression.

Sosiqui
As soon as the man was gone, Tian Yue curled around Morgan, enfolding her gently in his coils, a draconic hug. "I missed you," he rumbled, softly. "Who was that man? How is Tien? How are you?"

mistalina13
"I missed you too." Morgan leaned against him and sighed heavily. "He is familiar to Tien, that's all we both know." She stroked the Dragon's scales lightly.

"She is...distant and confused." Morgan closed her eyes. "I'm...mostly fine." Considering I'm a few steps closer to dead. She fell silent for a moment, then opened her eyes to gaze up at him. "Can you take me home?"

Sosiqui
Tian Yue looked surprised. "I thought... are you done journeying already? I mean, yes, of course I can take you home... I'd love to have you back, but if Tien needs..." His voice trailed off. He did want her back, desperately so, but the goddess had to be considered as well.

mistalina13
"No. I wanna go home with you." Morgan threw her arms around the Dragon's neck. She didn't care that she was being selfish at this point.

Silly girl, lets go home with your Dragon. Tien laughed then, but her voice had sounded almost sad. What you need now is to train and that can be done anywhere.

"Tien even says I can go home."

Sosiqui
"Well then, with permission..." Tian Yue chuckled and lifted her lightly up in one carefully cupped claw, offering her a step up to his shoulders. "That man... Angmar. He knew some ancient names, very ancient indeed... old failings of the Fading." His eyes were narrowed slightly now in thought.

mistalina13
I knew him...but from where...I'm not sure.

Morgan carefully climbed up onto the Dragon's shoulders and settled herself. "Tien says she knew him, but she can't remember from where." She rubbed the side of his neck lightly. "Thank you for coming for me love."

Sosiqui
"Did..." Tian Yue paused. "Did no one else come for you, then? I had searched, but your... your friend, Ser. She was gone before I even read your note forbidding her to go. I looked for her, but did not find her. Did she find you...?"

mistalina13
"No...no one else did." Morgan closed her eyes. "Ser probably got lost." She sighed heavily, part of her doubted her friend was still alive. Her fingers ran idly over the scales of the Dragon's neck as she tried to banish the bad thoughts.

Sosiqui
"I see..." Tian Yue bowed his head for a moment, then straightened. "Hold on," he warned, and waited for her before leaping up into the sky, twining upwards until they were high above where Angmar had accosted her.

mistalina13
Morgan relaxed the further away from that place that they got. She opened her eyes to look at the landscape. The fact it was so bleak and dead still upset her, but to a far less of a degree.

I wish to speak to your Dragon, once I've had time to regain my strength.

She waited until they were on their way to relay the Trickster's request.

Sosiqui
"Speak to me? Of course - I've wanted to speak to her as well. I would like to know the goddess that holds you," Tian Yue said, with a smile that was only a little sad. The wind rushing around them carried the scent of ashes and dying things.

There must be restoration before too much more time has passed.

The Dragon's Ramblings

Tian Yue settled easier into his bed than he had for many days, relieved and calmed by the knowledge that Morgan was only a few rooms away, resting peacefully. She was safe - and, moreover, he had been the one to save her from that bizarre man.

I saved her. I did it. The thought warmed him as he nestled into the covers; on impulse, he tugged the blankets around him and burrowed into them, grinning. It was silly, he knew, but... he had needed to do something good. Something like this.

That he had been able to do so for his lover was the best part.

Foolish dragon, giddy like a small child over such a little thing... but it's better than concentrating on all the big things that are wrong. He sighed. That man... he'd known some very ancient names. Old glories... old failures, though Tian Yue had spoken truly in response. Those names no longer were the slings and arrows that this Angmar had expected them to be. They were nothing next to the name Lucius...

Lucius. He should seek out his... former consort as well. It had been quite some time since he left Universe standing silent in the grasp of memory. His own memories tickled feather-light in the back of his mind. Would it be possible to build new ones to match the old?

And then there was Morgan... when he had shielded her at first, it had been Tien there under his protections, the Trickster in control. He hoped the goddess' desire to speak with him remained after the emotions of the day had faded. While he wasn't sure how he felt about Tien... it was unfair to think too much before he'd truly met her.

The feel of her under his shields, though... She is named well, Trickster. Her energy is fluid, like a fox slipping through the brush, or a kitsune spirit. No, he would need to speak to her, to come to understand her, before...

How had Morgan managed it with Shaiming so well?

Strong. She had been so strong...

Tian Yue shook his head under the blankets, then yawned. It was time for more sleep and fewer ramblings of a foolish dragon.

Underworld and Worldshield

Thabara
"Still too slow," Priya sneered as the flat side of her scimitar connected forcefully with Nergal's right wrist, causing him to give off an undignified, pain-filled yelp and drop the weapon. Yet he did manage to bring up his left-hand sword just in time to protect his neck from Priya's next blow. "But not entirely hopeless," she recommended, quirking a brow. "Break?"

"Break," Nergal agreed, panting heavily. "Please." They were out in the backyards again for their daily practice, picking a different one each day.. And ever since he'd sneaked out that night alone, his guardian's fencing lessons had become quite mercilessly. If he insisted on going out alone, she'd said, he'd better be prepared to fend for himself alone. He hadn't been able to argue with that.

He sheathed his sword and then went to retrieve the weapon he had dropped, but not without keeping a wary eye on his opponent - he didn't want to give her the chance to launch one of her surprise attacks at him. She was out of breath too, he noticed with grim satisfaction. The days she had been able to fend off his assaults without effort clearly were a thing of the past.

"You may want to have Ishum look after this," Priya said, pointing at her lord's bruised wrist. She'd used the flat side of her sword, sure, but she hadn't held back in strength at all. She never did. Not anymore at least.

Nergal circled his hand tentatively, face twisting with pain for a moment. "It is alright, I think. Bruised, hurts, but nothing broken. I can still fight another round." He thankfully accepted the water bottle Priya offered to him, swallowing down its stale content with thirsty gulps. These sparring lessons were a welcome chance to get his mind off things, allowing to lose himself in the intricate routines of attack, dodge, counterattack, defend..

He handed the bottle back to her, and moved back to the center of the dusty square which was their training ground today - one hand sliding up to tug slightly at the ponytail he'd tied his mass of hair into, making sure it wouldn't come loose in the middle of the fight. "Ready when you are," he said, turning, challenging her.

Priya sighed, taking a few quick swallows from the bottle herself before she screwed the cap back on, eying the lone, slender figure waiting for her. Just like Ishum, she was starting to become increasingly worried about him. He had stopped sleeping, ever since that day, and she seriously hoped it was normal, something that was supposed to be. After all, gods didn't require sleep, did they?

Except for Dream, of course.

Sosiqui
"Will this work for you, little one?" Tian Yue smiled as Lao Shu snuffled around the suite. They were in the hotel that Shartha had claimed, but much closer to the ground, near the kitchens. The reek of rotting food was nearly more than the dragon could stand, but Lao Shu seemed eager to go forth and investigate.

"Admirably, Lord!" Lao Shu squeaked and then peered up at his Lord. "May I go... sample the delicacies?"

"Go ahead." Tian Yue wrinkled his nose as the Rat skittered away, glad that he wasn't in his dragon form. The stench really would be too much to bear with a more sensitive (and more cultured) nose. Instead, he opened the window and hopped lightly out into the air, grinning a bit as he did so. He tended to fly mostly in dragon-form, but there was something... amusing about flying in human shape. Something super-hero-like.

He had a mind to visit Shartha and Evin, but that changed when he heard the clink of blades nearby. Hmmm... Curious, but wary, he circled around the building until he was overlooking the square on the side where the hotel's main entrance had once been located. Oh!

They weren't combatants locked in deadly battle. They were a god and an Aoide; a feline, again, but this one blessedly not the same color as Asherah and Nebula. Tian Yue lightly touched down behind the corner of the building, then walked out to meet them. "Greetings in the name of the Twin Crown," he called out, holding his head high. Who was this? Not a god he'd met before, for certain.

Thabara
They both looked considerably startled upon the greeting. It was obvious they had been too focused on circling each other and waiting for the other to expose an opening which would allow for an attack to take notice that someone had come close. The aoide was the first to react, sheathing her scimitars and kneeling to pay her respects to the unknown god. Not, however, without moving herself between the stranger and her master first, and her right hand remained resting on the hilt, ready to draw the blade again immediately should her lord require protection.

"Greetings to you," Nergal replied, eying the other warily to size him up. Another god, no doubt, he could sense some sort of power emanating from this one. He had thought himself to be far away enough from the Pantheon grounds to run into others of his kind, but apparently that was not the case.

There was something eerily familiar about the stranger who carried himself with obvious pride, yet not.

The glasses almost brought a smile to his face. Almost.

The Underworld sheathed his blades as well, a pair of curious looking sickle-swords, and inclined his head in a polite greeting. "I am Nergal, the Overseer of Souls, Ruler of the Starless Halls - though they have not yet been remade. Whom do I have the honor to make acquaintance with?"

Sosiqui
Ah... Underworld. Tian Yue was definitely interested now. There were not many among the Pantheon who were rulers of kingdoms and courts - Dream, perhaps, was the only other that could claim such a title. And Underworld. Not a Dragon King, but still a King of sorts.

"I am Tian Yue, the Dragon King Tien Lung," he said, giving Underworld a similar respectful nod. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Nergal - I had wanted to meet with you since I heard you had been reborn, actually." He smiled, an easy and friendly grin.

Thabara
"Is that so?" He stepped forward, a slender figure bearing a simple tank top and cargo pants, the still too feminine shapes hidden away by the usual bandages. The clothes were covered in dust, but curiously, none seemed to stick to the god's skin.

One pale hand came to rest on the aoide's shoulder, squeezing it slightly, letting her know she could relax. There was no threat to be expected from from this one, not now that he had renewed his allegiance to the Twin Crown but recently.

"And why would that be?" He eyed the other curiously. Few had come to seek him out, and none of them had been a god. Well, with the exception of sweet, gentle Music of course, but that was something else entirely.

Sosiqui
"More curiosity - and there are so few rulers among the Pantheon." Tian Yue tilted his head slightly to one side. "It is a difficult thing, to rule, and I find that time and the Fading have dampened much."

That, and half of me not having any experience ruling, unless you count Civilization III.

Thabara
"True," Nergal agreed. "But if it is advice you came looking for.." He hesitated. The idea that one of the Dragon Kings might require his advice seemed strange, but there were rumors he'd heard about this one, rumors he had not thought to be true. "There is little I can offer, I fear. The days of my ruling are long since past, and all that remains of my once vast domain is I and those countless dead condemned to wander the Living World, lost."

His hand slipped off his aoide's shoulder. "It is frustrating I only can do so little as I am now," the young god admitted, "especially now." That feeling of powerlessness must be familiar to the other, he assumed. As it seemed the rumors he'd heard had been true and Shaiming was no more, but this new one remained Tien Lung still. Worldshield.

Sosiqui
"Is there anyone whose realm has not been torn to pieces?" Tian Yue looked up at the sky for a moment, wistful. "My failure is as great, if not more so... no, not advice, as such. Commiseration, perhaps."

Thabara
"In that case, you have been looking for the wrong person," Nergal said brusquely. His words were not aimed to be an affront. It was more like.. that he still hadn't worked out this whole sympathy/compassion thing, nor did he have the intention to ever do so. He simply couldn't bend himself that far.

Not yet.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue was taken aback for a moment, but the words did not seem to be offered as an insult - simply as a truth. "I see. No harm, then. But I share in your frustration of being only able to do very little as of yet. The dead need a home, the worlds need protection from the Twin Crown's current influence, yet it seems the most we can do is wait for things to take their course." He wondered what else there was that was needed but simply not possible, concerns and frustration spread among other domains of the gods.

Thabara
"The Twin Crown.. You Dragon Kings were always among the ones closest to Him. Do you know.. how much longer He will remain that way? Already it feels to me like there are far more dead than living, and new voices are added to their crescendo every day, every hour, every minute, every second.. I can deal with it but," he paused, hesitating for a moment before he spoke on, "I am concerned about an acquaintance of mine - Music."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue shook his head then, with an expression of regret. "I do not, unfortunately. I am worried about the Twin Crown myself - if Destruction rages unfettered, eventually there will be nothing left to destroy, and what use are gods without mortals? This entire undertaking of rebirth would fail. But I am also sworn to neutrality. I cannot prefer one Crown over the other... but..." He looked up at the mottled sky. "I wish for something more."

His ears perked slightly at the mention of Music. "Echo! I met her once, before merging. She's lovely. Is she alright?" He gave Nergal a concerned look.

Thabara
"She is.. well, I guess you could say, given the circumstances." Nergal sighed. "Afraid at times, and - like so many of us - feeling awfully useless."

Sosiqui
"We're all stuck between what we once were and what we know ourselves to be." Tian Yue shook his head. "Once my own power matures again I should be able to protect the mortal world from the influence that Destruction exerts... that may help, some." I hope.

Thabara
"Better if there was none of that influence in the first place." Nergal said sullenly.

"I wish for the impossible, I know. But to me this strange world of the Living is already complicated enough to deal with without having to fear for the safety of mine and those who are.. dear to me." Unconsciously he put his right hand on one of the sword hilts. That Echo had been attacked, that it was even possible for someone to harm the kind-hearted goddess, still upset him greatly. And it could happen again, anytime, in this madness that was spawned by Destruction's rule.

Sosiqui
"Indeed," Tian Yue acknowledged. "When my lover last journeyed, I worried about her every moment. The goddess within her is not yet strong enough to protect her... and by the time she is, then that will mean the change and - well." He cut off that line of thinking; too morbid, which was irony considering Who he was addressing here. "Balance would be best for the worlds," he added, addressing Nergal's original concern.

Thabara
"Morgan." Nergal nodded. "I have met her, twice. A sweet child, though she was not able to give me the answers I hoped for when I conversed with her. Too young perhaps to deal with the questions I posed." He frowned. "The second time was recently, but only briefly when she stayed in Echo's house for a short time. I was surprised to hear she had been.. chosen. By Trickery of all the--" He broke off, his wings flicking irritated. There was a reason his second encounter with the girl had only been brief: The intense dislike he'd felt instantly as soon as the Commedia Dell'Arte had been mentioned, the sudden urge to banish her from Echo's house right now.. He'd thought it wiser to retreat before this unusual surge of hot temper could cause him to do anything rash.

His mind touched the upon the topic of balance briefly but decided it could be deserted for a little longer in favor of another, more private one. "I.. am aware this is a rather personal question, but.." He hesitated, suddenly tense. Whatever he was about to ask, it was clear that it was something rather important to him. Bothering him. "Once it is time for Lady Tien to rise.. Once Morgan is gone.. What, do you think, your feelings towards the goddess will be? Will you hate her?" He shuffled his wings uneasily before he added: "You do not have to answer."

Sosiqui
"You've met Morgan?" Tian Yue was surprised, but he smiled. Apparently his lover got around more than he was entirely aware of - not surprising, considering all he had to do.

The smile faded a little with Underworld's next question though, and when all was said, he shook his head. "Hate her? No. I'm not the only one who had a lover changed by the gods." His expression quirked; such irony there was, in that. "The Pantheon must return to life again. I will miss her terribly when she is gone... but I will not hate Tien unless she gives me a reason to, by her own actions that go beyond instinct and the same need all of us shared."

Thabara
A lover.. Aislin had been not even this much to the Allmother, yet still..

"I see. She is lucky then. I even envy her a little." Nergal did not seem willing to elaborate on the matter, but there was a rigidity in his stature, a trace of discontent to his features he wasn't able to hide completely, which made it easy enough to guess he might have encountered someone.. less reasonable. "Thank you. I was merely.. being curious." Trying to understand Kishara's intense loathing rather but, ultimately, it was his own problem to deal with.

"As for balance.. Any idea, or suggestion on what could be done for it to be restored?" He paused before he carefully added: "I wholly understand if you are sworn to remain neutral to His influences, but.. there are others who have the freedom to move."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue himself was only too grateful to move on to a new topic. "Indeed, and I hear that others are moving... or trying to do so. Lord Harmodius is seeking the reunion of His Dragon Kings, I know that much, so I have been doing what I can to locate my siblings and bring them to His throne. But other than that..." He shook his head, regretfully. "My own duties lie elsewhere, as I have been ordered. When my power grows, I will be able to protect the worlds somewhat from Destruction's influence, but that only covers the problem. It does not solve it."

Thabara
"There is hope then. Even if those you mentioned may be struggling in vain, they are at least doing something. Though," he added ruefully, "speaking to Lady Echo has given me some understanding as to why some of us would refuse to even venture out of the safety of their rooms in this Age, how intimidating it is to those born from Creation's influence alone.."

He paused for a little while before he spoke again. "I have met Qian Lung's host once, though the memory is sort of hazy.." He wasn't quite sure if it was to blame on the fact that his essence had still been mostly bound to the gem back then, or if it was because of Aislin's merry sampling of the intoxicating beverages the Pantheon's kitchenette had had to offer. "About one and a half year ago. An elven man going by the name of Kheviel. One of my aoidei has met the Fangbridle's host, and there were whispers about Mang and Shen Lung. The dead take little notice of the flow of time, so I cannot say when it was that they were seen, nor do I know of their current whereabouts." He sighed. "I wish I could be of more help."

Sosiqui
"There is always hope - between Creation and Destruction lies balance, Void. This inferno does very few any good."

As Nergal spoke of the Dragon Kings, Tian Yue aligned that information with his own, nodding thoughtfully. "I have met Kheviel, before I became Tien Lung... the Fangbridle is known to me. I do actually know where he lives, which is more than I have for the rest of my siblings." His smile was wry. "Shen Lung I also met, before, but I do not know where he is now. I have not seen Mang in this new life. But I will find them - thank you. Any help at all is certainly appreciated. I am all too aware that there is a great deal riding on my actions." He made a face; it was a bit stressful if he thought about it. With great power comes great responsibility, indeed.

Thabara
"Well, should anything about their whereabouts come to my attention, I will let you know immediately." Underworld remained quiet for a little while, his calm gray eyes carefully looking the other over. The expression the dragon king bore was familiar - the pressure of responsibility, the expectations placed on one's shoulders.. He knew that feeling all too well.

"You look like you may appreciate a little distraction," he finally suggested, the hand which had been resting only loosely on the leather-wrapped sword hilt shifted to grasp it fully, ready to draw the heavy weapon. "I think I can manage for another round or two." He straightened and raised his chin, wondering if the other would accept his challenge.

Sosiqui
"Thank you," Tian Yue murmured - then brightened as Nergal placed his hand on his sword-hilt. A slow, knowing smile spread over his face.

"That would be marvelous - but my own blade is back at the Pantheon. I am not sure if wielding claws instead would be fair?" He raised one eyebrow at the other, clearly pleased by the prospect. He hadn't had a chance to spar with someone for so long, and never against a skilled physical opponent. Not in this life, anyway.

Which should have worried him, he realized abruptly. Could he successfully take Nergal on with his blade? Maybe, maybe not.

Thabara

"I would not mind. I have no experience fighting such an opponent, at least I do not think I do, but.." The corners of his lips curled slightly upwards. "But that is the reasoning behind practice, is it not? To hone one's skills and improve them."

"But, if you wish to fetch your blade from the Pantheon, I would not mind waiting for you either."

Sosiqui
"In that case, I will beg your leave to go get my own blade - my Aoide thinks I destroy enough robes as it is," Tian Yue said, with a wry smile. "My dragon-shape is quite a bit larger, and the transformation is not friendly to my clothes. But this won't take long..."

With that, Tian Yue crouched slightly - he didn't need to, not in this shape, but the instinct was there - and jumped into the air. He didn't fly much in human form, preferring to wear his dragon shape when he needed to travel, but he'd needed the delicate fine-motor skills of human hands to carry Lao Shu here. Trying to figure out what to do with his arms was a bit of a puzzle; having them just hang at his side seemed awkward, but any number of superhero flight poses cribbed from comic books had proven equally silly in actual practice.

Still, the Pantheon was not far away, and the skylight in his room was still open. Tian Yue darted in, landed with only a little stumble, then went into the treasury and retrieved his sword. It took only a moment to shuck off the more awkward outer robe he wore, then secure sword and scabbard at his side. He was back at the plaza within five minutes, though he was panting a bit when he arrived.

Well. That would make it more fair; the other god was already tired as well. Tian Yue nodded to Nergal and brushed his hair back off of his forehead. "There we are." He drew his sword; the amethyst blade glinted dully in the dim light that passed for sunlight in Destruction's age. "Shall we begin?"

Thabara
"Take all the time you need," Nergal offered politely, inclining his head a little. Inwardly he was equal parts relieved and amused that the other seemed to be so shy about disrobing in front of him - here was someone whose modesty might match his own it seemed.

The way Tian Yue left took him by surprise though, leaving him to stare after the red-head with his mouth standing slightly ajar. So, this one was capable of flight even without wings?

Damn.

Next to him, Priya giggled mischievously.
"Highness, you're green with envy."

"Am not." Nergal scowled at her. He flexed his right hand experimentally and grimaced at the pain in his wrist. It wasn't too bad, but it might prove to be a hindrance when he'd measure his fencing skills against the other god. "Better get the bandages and the ointment from your bag and get this treated ," he instructed his aoide who seemed still entirely too cheerful for his tastes. "Yes, Lord." Priya raised obediently to heed his words, and just barely managed to finish wrapping her Lord's wrist before Tian Yue returned.

Nergal raised a brow when his opponent drew his weapon - a rapier? No, not quite, but something similar. "A beautiful blade," he commented approvingly, "most befitting for a Dragon King." This fight would be.. interesting to say the least, he realized. The Dragon's weapon seemed to be designed for elegant, swift fencing; whereas his khopesh were made for heavy, fierce blows.

"Ready," he nodded, drawing his own blades. "Let us try to not sever any limbs," he added with a wry smile.

Sosiqui
"That would put a damper on things, yes," Tian Yue said dryly, then smiled and took a step back. The other god's weapons were heavier, but his schiavona was not forged of mere metal. It would not break. Still, it would call for some different tactics...

His first instinct was to use flight to get an edge, but that wouldn't be fair. Instead, he settled for a quick feint to try and draw Underworld's attention before aiming a real blow - though softened and with the flat of the blade - at Nergal's right leg.

Thabara
He saw that strike coming and he could have parried it, possibly.

His experience from the countless mock-fights with his aoide, however, had taught him otherwise - his blades were fierce, powerful, true, but due to their heavy weight they were also slow. So instead he merely sidestepped, just barely enough to let the amethyst blade pass by harmlessly, at the same time attempting to gain enough momentum to strike himself. Even if the first blade was deflected, the second one however.. maybe. Maybe.

Sosiqui
Well, that didn't work- He almost, almost overbalanced himself in that lunge, but a swish of his tail helped him regain his balance without stumbling; it was good for something after all.

Need to dodge- His blade was too light to properly parry Nergal's twin blades. While it wouldn't break, it was simply not heavy enough to hold off both blades at once without being held two-handed, one at each end. Tian Yue wasn't willing to do that yet; instead, he twisted out of the way as best he could. The urge to shift into dragon-shape was very, very strong - for a moment it felt as though he were staving off two opponents, both Nergal and his own instincts at once.

The first blade missed, and the second... almost did. Almost. Cloth tore, and Tian Yue felt a sting as the blade just barely broke skin. A tiny nick, but...

"I believe you have first blood," the Dragon King said, ruefully.

Thabara
"Mere luck," Nergal acknowledged with a nod, stepping back and doing his best to ignore the painful throbbing in his wrist. "Though I feel you can do better than that. There is no need to hold back for my sake. I wont." The smile which followed looked a tad too smug, too pleased, as if the Underworld Lord was attempting to taunt him.

Perhaps he was. There'd been other lessons in the art of battle.. Far, far older than Priya's, in ages long since past. While he didn't remember them consciously, they weren't entirely forgotten either.

"What he means to say," Priya remarked from the far side of the backyard, "is that he has no qualms whatsoever to fight dirty."

"Priya!" Nergal snapped sharply, distracted for a moment. How dare she!

Sosiqui
"Most likely... I've been training with the sword, but it seems my instinctive urge is to fight as a dragon. Which only makes sense, really. Why fight in such a distressingly... fleshy... form when I could have claws, scales, and teeth?" Tian Yue shrugged and carefully tightened his clothing around the small wound to put pressure on it. "So in that sense I could do better, but I do not know. Would it be fair?" His grin was sharp-toothed.

Thabara
"Fair? It wouldn't be, most certainly, but then again fairness and chivalry have no place on a true battlefield." Nergal's lips curled up to a cold smile. The mention of a 'fleshy form' tingled at something deep within, making him wish he could fight as the Poltergeists which he had encountered. Making use of objects in the physical, the living world, without being bound to its rules himself..

"However, it was your shields that you are so famous for I was referring to - do they not protect you from physical blows?" His twin blades swung for another attack, aiming at the other's sword arm this time. He was swift, and if it weren't for the weight of his weapons this fight might have the potential to turn into a nightmare.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue dodged that one cleanly - not by much, true, but by enough, and as he moved, he whipped his tail around in an attempt to knock Nergal off-balance by whapping him on the shins. "No, actually," he said, sliding into a guard stance. "At least, not at this stage of rebirth. My power is for protecting mortals from the pure, wild mana and influence of the unfettered gods."

Odd, to have a conversation during a swordfight, but it wasn't exactly a desperate duel to the death.

Thabara
"I se--" The tail sent Nergal stumbling, hissing a barely audible curse under his breath as he struggled to remain on his feet. Priya's tail had been neither long enough nor strong enough to do such a thing so he had seen no danger here and paid attention to the blade alone. That had been rather careless.

Sosiqui
Ah- Tian Yue followed up on Nergal's stumble with a sharp chop with the flat of the blade, aiming to knock the other god further off-balance and send him tumbling.

Thabara
The other's wings flared in a desperate attempt to help him retain his balance, but as usual they failed to interact with the physical world. He just barely managed to deflect the slender amethyst blade with one of his own swords, but at the price of his right knee connecting with the ground rather painfully in the process. His constant sparring with his guardian had schooled his reflexes enough for him to roll over immediately to evade further strikes and bring some distance between himself and his opponent.

So. A swifter weapon with a farther reach was what he was up against, plus a tail. Not to forget, that damn Dragon King was able to fly without wings. Well, he didn't intend to leave him with enough time to actually remember about it. That this new Tien Lung had been born from a mortal boy might work in his favor..

Sosiqui
Well, that had worked fairly well, though he'd caught the wince as Nergal's knee hit the ground. "Are you injured?" he asked, though he kept his guard up just in case it was a trick. He didn't think so, though. The point was, after all, to spar, not to actually kill each other!

Thabara
"Nothing to worry about," Nergal muttered, stomping his right foot on the ground a few times to test the actual truth of his claim. "A bruise, no more. Merely one of many I collected today, thanks to her." He pointed his chin at Priya, his face bearing an accusing expression.

Sosiqui
"We can stop, if you like," Tian Yue offered. "You are tired, and while I suppose someone should know how to fight when exhausted, I may not be the best opponent for that type of training." True, it would invalidate his trouble of going back to the Pantheon and getting his sword, but he'd had enough to figure out that the blade - while a nice symbol - was not exactly what he instinctively wanted to use.

I wonder why Shaiming encouraged Crispin to practice so? Maybe just for the exercise...

Thabara
Nergal's face clearly mirrored his conflicting emotions, pride versus the dawning realization that the other was - probably - right.

"I.. Perhaps, yes." His disappointment was plain, but it seemed to be directed more at himself than Tian Yue. "We seem to be mismatched anyway. And while I would definitely like to give a try and go against your dragon form.. It would indeed be a bad idea now. Another time, perhaps?" He offered an apologetic smile.

Sosiqui
"Of course, in better circumstances. When you're well-rested first, then it would be far more balanced." He wasn't going to say fair - while he thought himself in dragon shape to be more than a match for most things, he wasn't sure how skilled Nergal well-rested and fresh could be. Best not to give insult, even if unintentional.

He stepped back and sheathed his sword, then looked ruefully at the little nick he'd sustained from Nergal's blades. "At least I'll have a little reminder for a while of our meeting."

Thabara
"Hm," Nergal agreed vaguely, sheathing his own twin-blades, and bending slightly forward to carefully prod at his injured knee. This hadn't gone too well, really. He'd have to be more mindful about tails in the future. "I do live fairly close to the Pantheon, so I have doubt that sooner or later our paths will cross once more."

Sosiqui
"Oh, probably - I look forward to our eventual rematch," Tian Yue said, with a smile. "What we did today was a good workout, even if it was brief. If you come to the Pantheon, look for the door with a dragon rampant against a field of stars. And don't mind the Aoide who opens the door; he'll probably fall at your feet at once. It's just how he is."

Thabara
"That has an awfully familiar ring to it," Nergal said with a faint smirk. Though it had been a while since he'd last seen Ishum react that way. He wondered why that was..

He bowed his head politely at the not-quite invitation to visit the Worldshield's chambers. "Thank you. Until we meet again."

Talking with the Trickster

Sosiqui
Tian Yue hummed to himself under his breath as he moved down the hallway towards Morgan's room. It was good to have her back, so good - he hadn't been in the Aoidei quarters much since she'd left. After all, there was always the risk of running into Nebula on the way...

But not this time. He paused for a moment at Morgan's door, then knocked. "Love? Are you in?"

mistalina13
Morgan was laying on her bed and had dozed again only to be jarred awake by the knock on the door. "Yeah, come in." She sat up some and idly groped around for her glasses on the small table beside her bed.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue opened the door and went over to the bed, sitting on the edge next to her and reaching out to put one hand on hers. "How are you feeling? A bit more like yourself once you've had a chance to sleep properly?"

mistalina13
Morgan retrieved her glasses and slid them on. "A bit, yeah." She sat up further and leaned against him. "Thank you, for coming to find me..." Her cheeks reddened slightly and she glanced away.

Sosiqui
"I would find you wherever you were if you needed me," Tian Yue said gently. "How is Tien? I felt her in control when I protected you from that man. She is growing stronger."

mistalina13
"She's been quiet...the last few days." Morgan sighed softly. "Tien can only speak through me...she can't...control my body yet." She did her best to keep the sadness from her voice.

Tien stirred at the mention of her name but did not speak, figuring she would leave Morgan time with her lover. Part of her felt guilty for taking her from the Dragon.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue nodded. "It takes time to gain that control. Shaiming used to exert it during the night, while I... er, Crispin... was asleep. Phaedra doesn't yet- oh, you don't know," he said suddenly, squeezing Morgan's hand. "We found Nebula. The one that dwelled here in her place is Asherah, one of Tien's Aoidei. Did she find you? She set out to seek you. Nebula herself... it's complicated, but in the end she too was taken by a jewel. Phaedra, Goddess of Greed."

He did not mention how very unpleasant Phaedra was, or what had been done to his once-servant.

mistalina13
Asherah...

"No, we weren't approached by anyone except Angmar." Morgan squeezed his hand in return. "It's a shame...about Nebula." She lifted his hand and nuzzled it.

"I apologize..."

Sosiqui
"Yes..." Tian Yue left the rest unsaid - that in a way, it was a relief that the Aoide would be gone, but there was guilt there too. It was convenient for Tien Lung that Nebula would die, was it? Feh... there's honor for you. He shook his head. "It is hard for her. The goddess is one of Destruction's seven; she is not kind."

He paused as the timbre of Morgan's voice shifted, then inclined his head respectfully. "Greetings, Trickster. Apologize for what?"

mistalina13
"For taking your lover from you, Worldshield." There was a tinge of regret in her voice.

Sosiqui
That... that was a surprise, and Tian Yue took one sharp, indrawn breath before shaking his head, a sad smile on his face. "No. You need not apologize for your rebirth. Tien Lung did exactly the same thing to Morgan, after all. I... I will miss her dearly," and he fumbled to hold Morgan's hand tighter yet, "but I do not blame you. Don't feel guilty about it, please. I will treasure her for as long as I can."

He paused. "But... thank you, for the thought. You are kind."

mistalina13
Tien did her best to keep what she said from her host. "I will keep as much of her with me as I can, but I am in no position to make a promise like your predecessor did." That was her small way of admitting she wasn't nearly as strong as the Dragon.

She nodded weakly, but it was the best she could manage. "As are you, strong too, just like she said." There was a tinge of a smile and a mischievous unfamiliar glint in her host's green-brown eyes.

Sosiqui
"I know - I would never expect something. I never expected it before it happened..." Tian Yue trailed off, then shook his head. "What Shaiming did is unprecedented and not likely to be repeated. But... thank you. Again."

His tail flicked back and forth lightly under his robes. "I have wanted to speak with you from when I learned you had chosen Morgan for your own. I am not sure if we met in the time before the Fading. Or if I had... if I would have known." His smile quirked, playfully. "A lady of masks, yes?"

mistalina13
"I cannot recall..." Her head lulled lazily against the Dragon's arm. "Mhm. But it was not to my advantage this time...I cannot remember my true face." She sighed softly.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue's instinctive reaction to the soft movement was to lightly put one arm around her to support her - too late remembering that it was Tien, not Morgan. Oh well. Best to... get used to it, I suppose... "My memory - or, rather, the ancient memories of Tien Lung - are fragmented as well," he said, aloud. "The face you have chosen for now is beautiful, though."

A pause. "... Whatever happens... take care of her, please? I know I have very little right to ask, but I can't help it."

mistalina13
"I will do what I can..." Tien felt a pang of guilt then at the sadness in the Dragon's voice. "...I'll take my leave now, so you can have some time with her..."

Morgan felt herself suddenly shoved back into control as Tien retreated and she slipped her arm around his. "I love you, no matter what happens, I love you and I always will." Her voice was barely above a whisper as she spoke, her gaze drifting up to meet his.

Sosiqui
"Likewise," Tian Yue said softly, bending to brush his lips against hers, a bare touch - making sure it was Morgan there, looking up at her. Once he was sure, he moved to deepen the kiss.

mistalina13
Morgan shifted and reached up to lace her arms around his neck as she returned the kiss.

The Memory Stone

Too much to do. Too much to worry about. too much, too much. Tian Yue had a strong sense of deja vu as he sat down at his desk and attempted to collect his thoughts by pinning them to paper. Shaiming had dealt with this, he knew... stuck in the whirl and swirl of the Pantheon's Court politics and the duties of the Worldshield until it parched him dry.

And then he had fallen in love with the stars...

Tian Yue shook his head. So the trap was a familiar one to Tien Lung, one he was prone to fall into. Well and good, but he knew the enemy, and that should give him the ability to recognize what was happening and maneuver his way out of it. He looked at the piece of paper before him, where he'd began writing a list of the things on his mind.

Morgan. Well, that was... as taken care of as it could be. She was home, and he had spoken with Tien and found her much, much more... more sane than Phaedra was, not that that was difficult. There was reassurance on that front.

Lucius, another care of the heart... but Tian Yue sighed and moved down to the next item on the list. Seek the Dragons. There were other things below it, bits and bobs about Nebula and his Stars and such, but... while they did need to be dealt with, his Lord had instructed him to find his brothers and sister, array them around His throne in a panorama of scales.

How kind of Him to give me dispensation to ignore that other problem, he thought, with a sigh. He knew he was willfully ignoring Nebula and Phaedra, and that he needed to give thought to why Nebula had felt familiar, had the touch of old so like that of his Stars... but it was so hard to deal with her, let alone the goddess she bore. And a treacherous part of him whispered that putting it off would really solve the problem. She'd be gone... and then it wouldn't matter at all, would it? Wouldn't matter what she was.

No. He gave that particular idea a hard mental stomp. He would deal with the problem and face it; Tien Lung did not flee from anything, especially not something as patently petty as the Goddess of Greed. But the orders of his Lord had to come first. He had been disorganized long enough.

"Toki," he called, and the Aoide was at his side in a moment, bowing low enough that the tips of his bunny ears brushed the floor.

"My Lord? What is it you require?" Toki gave him an eager look equaled only by particularly bright canines waiting for a command.

"Your skills in research, Toki." Tian Yue took off his glasses and carefully wiped them with the sleeves of his robes, then put them back on and smiled at the waiting Aoide. "I need to find the rest of the Dragon Kings - the Fangbridle dwells here, that much I know. And Futs Lung was, last I heard, not embodied."

Toki bowed again. "So you said, my Lord. I do hope a host of suitable strength can be found for that noble King." He looked distraught.

"I am certain one will be found - perhaps already has been," Tian Yue said soothingly. "What I need is your help in locating the rest of my siblings. Can you have a look around the Pantheon and do what you can? Don't be nosy and put yourself where you aren't wanted, but..."

Toki drew himself up to his full height and actually saluted. "Yes, my Lord! I will carry out the task! You can trust me!"

Tian Yue laughed. "I know I can, and I do, Toki. Thank you." He watched, amused, as the Aoide bowed one last time and scurried out of the room.

Well. That was that bit taken care of, for now... best to do now what he could. Tian Yue rose from his chair and went into the other room to put on a newer set of robes and collect what he had brought home for Zhijian. It was time to pay the Fangbridle a visit.

The Shield and the Bridle

Sosiqui
Tian Yue approached the Fangbridle's door with the promised treasure in one hand, wrapped carefully in a square of silk. It had been some time since his return, and the delivery of that gift was definitely delayed - but now he had more business with Zhijian than a simple souvenir. Gather the Dragon Kings - at least I know where Zhijian lives. That's more than I have for any of the rest. Why have we scattered so far from where we should be?

He shook himself out of thought, and knocked. Standing on the doorstep did nobody any good at all.

Meepfur
Zhijian had been home for only half an hour at most by the time the knock at his door came. He was sitting on a bed of furs, peering closely at a horse's bridle - one more thing he acquired at the museum. This item was different, though: it was important. it had come from somewhere else, another world - another world he needed to find, the sooner the better.

Putting it aside on the floor, he went to the door and opened it up to see who was there.

Sosiqui
"Brother." Tian Yue smiled when Zhijian opened the door; it was good to see another of his kin again. Other gods were one thing, but the Dragon Kings shared a special bond. "I have returned, as promised, and with a gift for your hoard." He held out the wrapped crystal.

Meepfur
"Tian Yue." Zhijian said his brother's name with a smile and slight purr. "It is good to see you again." The sudden appearance of his fellow dragon eased his otherwise frantic mind. He'd been by himself for days, obsessed with the hunt for his tack. It had all made him uncharacteristically twitchy.

His eyes lit at the sight of the gift, which he accepted gingerly. He opened the door further to allow the Worldshield into his still furniture-less room. Shiny baubles, from things that simply sparkled to things that actually seemed to be worth something, littered the floor in a semi-organized fashion. There was a mass of ornate bottles filled with colorful liquids arranged in one corner, decorative eggs that didn't want to stay put anywhere, even a sword, and so on.

"Please, come in." And then he could unwrap his gift!

Sosiqui
"Ah, I see you have begun rebuilding your hoard," Tian Yue said as walked inside, being careful not to step on anything. He wondered, idly, if Zhijian had also found the museum where Phaedra's gem had been.

"Our Lord was pleased with the outcome of my journey, and I have been confirmed in my throne," he said, with a proud smile. "There is also another reason for my visit. Our Lord is seeking a gathering of the Dragon Kings - it seems a most important matter."

Meepfur
Zhijian nodded distractedly, taking a seat on his bed of furs. He didn't invite his fellow dragon to sit - he simply assumed Tian Yue would do so if he cared to. He picked carefully at the wrapping of his gift with his claws.

He was quickly sidetracked, however, by one of the few things that could - mention of his Lord. "A gathering?" he rumbled, ears falling back in dismay. A gathering! A gathering, and he wasn't ready! It was shameful. "When?"

Sosiqui
"When - as soon as possible, I would imagine. It seemed a matter of some urgency. I worry for him, brother - I fear the imbalance in his being has grown too great for him to handle alone."

Meepfur
Soon? Soon? But he wasn't ready! Setting the crystal aside - with care, of course - Zhijian rose to all fours and began to pace. His tail lashed, and his ears fell flat against his skull. In the face of urgency, his unreadiness became painfully difficult to admit to.

"But...but I can't," he managed finally, "Not without my tack. I lost it. What if he needs me?"

Sosiqui
"Your... your tack?" Tian Yue tilted his head, curiously. "Is it something I can possibly help with?"

Meepfur
"I...I think I know where my bridle is." The dragon pulled anxiously at his mane. "And that's what I need first. That's the most important. Our Lord has ridden me bareback before, before..."

He trailed off, pausing to look at Tian Yue. There was something about the saddle, the saddle and Worldshield and...but it didn't matter. That wasn't important right now, or at least not as important as finding his bridle. He shook his head to end the thought. "But it's on another world, and I don't know how to get there."

Sosiqui
"Another planet, or another universe entirely? If it's the latter, I don't know much to help you, but if it's the former... there are a few humans left who still have the skills and resources to sail the stars. Some of them helped me when I needed to journey to the Gallery of Celestia, seeing as my current top speed for flight is quite a bit slower than is practical for interstellar travel." He made a face.

Meepfur
"I..." For a moment, Zhijian looked like a deer in headlights. "I don't know." His posture drooped, and he sat down heavily. He hadn't thought about that, not at all. It hadn't occurred to him to worry about the difference. Now he felt stupid, because the difference could be everything.

And how long would interstellar travel take, anyway? What if he needed to be back for this gathering Tian Yue had come to tell him about. Suddenly, everything seemed to be going wrong. "There has to be some way."

"Some efficient way," he clarified.

Sosiqui
"Be easy, brother," Tian Yue said, quietly. "You know what Tien Lung's failings were. All of us have changed, lost things."

Meepfur
Unfortunately, once something had the ordinarily laid back dragon worked up, it was not an easy thing to correct. "I know," he said with a frustrated growl, "But I have to find them. They're important."

Sosiqui
"I'm afraid I can't help you search your past," Tian Yue said, with a sigh. "My own memory is patchy, moments largely blended into each other. A shame... all those years, blurred and lost. But if there is anything I can do..."

Meepfur
Zhijian laughed, although the sound was strained. "It's not my past. It's tracking down what happened to them after I died."

Living, he never would have lost them. Never. Some things were far too important to lose. "Do you know where the others are?" he asked after a moment, referring to their fellow Dragon Kings. "Or how long it might take to find them?"

Maybe he'd have time to find his bridle, at least. It would be something.

Sosiqui
"I do not." Tian Yue frowned. "Before my merging, I met Shenlei, Shen Lung, and the host of the Black Dragon... but I have never heard tidings of any of the others save Futs Lung. His host failed him, I hear, and another is being sought." His tail lashed, once. Why were they flung to the four winds? It made no sense. They should all be here, by instinct.... "I came to you first. At least I know where you live." His smile was wry.

Meepfur
"Then I have time," he rumbled, "Or so it seems." It was, perhaps, a conflict of interest. The more time he had had, the more likely it was that he'd be ready, but if the matter that required a gathering was urgent, more time was not what they wanted.

Sosiqui
"So it seems. I will do what I can to gather our brothers and sister - and whatever you feel you need to do for our Lord, I know you will succeed." He gave Zhiji a supportive smile. "He will ride you again in triumph, I know it."

Meepfur
Zhijian was quiet for a moment before he finally nodded - the worry was still there, but with more of his usual calm. He rose to all fours and moved to butt his head against Tian Yue with brotherly affection. There was comfort in touch for the Fangbridle.

Sosiqui
Tian Yue made a quiet sound of comfort and dropped his hand down to caress Zhijian's head - the touch gentle, not in the least like how one would pet a dog or domestic animal. "My chambers, too, are always open to you, as they are to any of our brothers or our sister. I will find them - scales will surround the Twin Crown in more than effigy."

Further Discoveries

Books, books... books were all well and good, but everything Tian Yue had in his possession had one serious flaw. "These are all too damn old to be any use," he grumbled, closing a volume with a bit more force than was really necessary. Having one's information be several millennial - or more - out of date was good for some things, but for his current needs it was all extremely inconvenient.

Best to not take my frustrations out on the books - Gianfar would have my hide for it. Tian Yue stood up and stretched, his tail curling up at the end too before relaxing. A bit of tea would calm him down. Strange how he'd inherited that from Shaiming, of all things.

He turned to the doorway, and nearly collided with Toki. The Aoide's eyes were bright, and his face was flushed. "Oh! My Lord!"

"Whoa! Careful!" Tian Yue winced and steadied himself on the doorframe. "Slow down. What's wrong?"

Toki shook his head hard, making his bunny ears flap about wildly. "Nothing! Nothing is wrong! On the contrary!" He leaned in conspiratorially to whisper in Tian Yue's ear. "I believe I have found two of the Dragon Kings, my Lord!"

That got Tian Yue's attention. "You have?! Where?"

Toki beamed. "Why, in this very place!"

"What?!" Under his nose, this whole time...?

The Aoide looked smug for a moment. "Yes, yes! Qian Lung the Black dwells now with Lady Insanity, and after some searching I found another door bearing the signs of Ti Lung. You will find them within, yes, I'm sure of it!"

"Well, then..." That certainly made his job easier, even if it didn't make him feel any smarter. "Well done, Toki. Well done!" Toki beamed and wriggled like a puppy at his master's praise. "I should go and seek audience posthaste-"

"There is something else, my Lord," Toki said, quickly, and fiddled with his own fingers. "Nebula is gone."

"Gone?" Tian Yue blinked. "She's not in her room?"

Toki shook his head again. "No, and more than that. The treasures she brought and her things are all gone too."

"Hm." The Dragon's eyes narrowed. Could Phaedra have urged the fragile feline away somewhere? She was still under his protection, as much as he could hope to protect her from the deity curling through her body and mind. "I will sniff her out - we'll find where she's gone. I won't have her lost again." I've done that once, and look what happened - best to avoid it from now on. Tian Yue quickly shrugged out of his robes and handed them to Toki, then shifted into his dragon shape. Toki opened the doors for him as he twined down into the hallway of the Aoidei quarters, then into Nebula's room, where he pressed his nose to the ground and breathed in her scent.

Yes... she was here last... two, maybe three days ago? Nebula's scent was mingled with an odd spicy tang that had begun to permeate through her usual aroma - Phaedra, he assumed, or something related to the goddess. He turned, and followed the scent out the door, with Toki following him.

It led down the hall, but not, to Tian Yue's surprise, down the stairs. Instead, it went past, and around a corner, then another, then -

Then it stopped, in front of a door of rutilated quartz, flecked with gold and rubies. Her scent and the tang of spice mingled all over the place there. He did not need a sign to see whose rooms these were.

"So... she has found her own home." The dragon sighed. It was a relief, in a way, but he was a bit bothered that she hadn't bothered to tell him she was leaving.

Toki hesitantly put one hand on his scaled side. "My Lord?"

Tian Yue shook his head. "She is in her Lady's chambers now, Toki. We need not worry." About that, at least. About what Phaedra may be doing in there... no, if I go down that path, I'll never stop. "Come. I have Dragon Kings to meet, and plans to make."

"Yes, my Lord." Toki bowed, and Tian Yue turned to twine back down the hall, heading for his rooms.

The Celestial and the Black

Sosiqui
Tian Yue had at last managed to track another of the Dragon Kings - and it was right under his own nose, in the Pantheon itself. Toki would probably always treasure his strangled "What?!" when the Aoide had smugly told him the news he had ferreted out.

Qian Lung the Black Dragon. They had met, but before Crispin and Shaiming had become one, and his sister had not been very talkative then. He had barely known her for what she was... though Shaiming had, softly.

But now it was time to gather them in. He wondered that Qian Lung was here, instead of drawing near to her lady's side... but then, he supposed other questions could be asked of him. He wasn't sure what business the Black Dragon or her host could have in the chambers of Insanity, but... well. He raised his hand to the door and knocked.

Mintaka
Kheviel arched his eyebrows as even the dragon stirred in attention at the knock. Calico certainly did not knock on her own door, so who was here? He set the mug of coffee aside, rising carefully.

You think it is someone for Calico?

"Who'd come visit her though?" Kheviel asked out loud, almost as though asking himself. It wasn't exactly common knowledge that he was still staying here, unless someone had been watching, and that made him terribly uneasy. For quite some time now he - and Xuan - had been holed up here or his own house... partly in trying to bring themselves to a closer balance. And partly because he was still worried about certain remnants of his old life coming back to haunt them. Now knowing more about all this, it was chancy to think that he now held a deity so vulnerable and dependent on him. If he died... so did Xuan.

And that alone was reason enough for him to keep out of sight. And he'd also been less then social, but that was more because he was still dwelling on certain aspects of life - and not life. And not liking this whole... end of the world jive.

He stopped at the door, exhaling slowly. If someone was waiting to try to kill him, he was ready to fight, and he felt Xuan already preparing mentally in case. His hand gripped the doorknob a moment as he focused and steeled, opening the door-

-and finding someone not ready to kill him. He exhaled sharply then, visibly relaxing at least halfway. His gold eyes seemed slightly weary, yet vibrant with life behind them. "Ah, hello."

Xuan picked up quicker on what stood before them, giving a short draconic snort to Kheviel to be a bit more proper. Another of the Kings stands here.

Kheviel did, in fact, perk up more then, feeling at least more at ease about the situation. "Sorry, not used to actually having visitors," he explained.

"Greetings..." Xuan trailed that off, uncertain now how to address this particular king. It was one, yet... not as remembered. Puzzling to say the least, Xuan tried to put a name to the face.

Kheviel picked up faster, remembering a meeting once. "...Crispin?" Was it? It reminded him. Oh right... changes. Now he felt downright silly. "Erm, would you like to come in?" He felt particularly awkward, suddenly addressing a dragon king who resembled someone he had met once... even after Mintaka it was still hard for him to adjust and accept. Why now, though?

Sosiqui
"Crispin once, yes... Shaiming once, also, but now I am Tien Lung, and called Tian Yue." The Dragon smiled, and the new confidence in his demeanor was clear. "It has been too long since we talked last - how are you, Kheviel, and how fares the Black Dragon? I bring news from the Twin Crown."

Part of him was worried, though. He had spoken with Kheviel before the merging, before his birth as Tien Lung, and at that time he thought the assassin had been carrying Qian Lung's jewel for some time. And yet... the host was still here? Strange.

Mintaka
Kheviel stepped back, allowing room for the other to enter into the somewhat perplexing nature of Calico's room. At least enough of Min still lingered for it to not have gone completely out of whack... He absentmindedly scratched around the jewel in his chest then a moment, picking the right words to answer the question.

Xuan was more interested however, hearing words which were most important. News from the Twin Crown... I hope good news.

We'll see, he thought back. "Well, we are both well as we can be, all things considered." He gave a short noise of displeasure. "Kind of hard to have the best outlook on life when the world's not what it once was." Nevermind his own predicament of leaving the mortal coil, since that was far less pleasant in the scheme of things, and he almost welcomed it in the face of what the world was becoming. Too long outside was depressing, to say the least. Xuan at least made it more tolerable by reminding him of things and giving him someone to talk to.

"I can't say either of us is exactly pleased with the state of the world, but we've both decided at our current point in time we're not quite able to do too much yet about it." He flopped into one of the two chairs near a small table in the room, rubbing his head. "We've been working on working together though, so that should things have gone sour, either of us could work fluidly, if not together."

Xuan poked forward then with something to add. "Not that, in the current state of things, I feel I have an exact place. There is no one officially for me to shield, now, is there?" A hint of amusement and resignation laced the voice, a slight weariness as well. "You'll forgive me, Tian Yue, but there are things which plague my thoughts on the state of the Twin Crown and the world. I worry considering the world we were born into now." There was an apprehensiveness to the dragon, which carried quite clearly to the host's form.

Yes, please, he's yours to deal with more then myself. I'll be... over here listening in then, somewhat. Maybe. Ugh... I feel so awkward. The chitchat he gave was merely a mask for the even greater unease he had feeling the dragon's pensive and restless nature. Hopefully this news was good... or at least something which didn't mean that tomorrow was not gonna happen.

Sosiqui
"Of course." It made sense, really - while Shenlei exulted in the wild storms that Destruction could bring, Qian Lung was ever the protector of the Empress, Gaia, Life itself. He wondered in the back of his mind how Kishara was in these times.

"I have met with Kishara, but she does not seem to have resumed her station and come back into her power - but then, who of us has?" Tian Yue made a face. There was only one fully ascended deity that he knew of, and Universe was Sinned and bound. "No, the Twin Crown seeks His dragons together. He charged me with bringing us together. I think the continued unbridled movement of his influence is... affecting him, somehow. He needs us." The last sentence was imploring.

Mintaka
Both the dragon and Kheviel received such news with a steeling resolve. He needed them. Well, Xuan, but Kheviel had to go along as well, no? The tone spoke volumes more then mere words, as though the situation was indeed worse then it might have seemed.

I do not like that tone, Kheviel said with concern. Not after such news. Then again, I have little room to talk considering I once held homage to such a god, although my reasons were somewhat... not as destructive in ways most would consider.

Yes, but we both know things out there are bleak and grim, and if the Crown is affected by what he has wrought, then we must go, we must be there, even if we seem powerless. Perhaps things will change.

I know... We both have been preparing for these days, and I suppose we best make what we can. I will do anything needed, if you cannot; we made the bargain, no?

The tension was evident in the body shift and expression apparent. "I would not leave the Twin Crown alone," Xuan said evenly. "Even though I have no station to perform specifically, we all support the Twin Crown." Xuan leaned forward somewhat, voice lowering. "To be honest, the nature of Destruction's reign and time within has been of concern to both of us - Kheviel and I. And something we've both been concerned about. I am thankful my concern has not been completely unfounded."

Let's hope something can be done, Kheviel mused.

Sosiqui
"Naturally," Tian Yue murmured. "While my loyalty is to the Twin Crown and not to either aspect in and of itself, if all continues as it has... then eventually the worlds will crumble before the onslaught. Unless my power returns in force... right now, all I can protect is a single building." He shook his head sharply. "The worlds will fall and then so, again, will the Pantheon. We cannot truly Be without mortals to sustain us."

Mintaka
"Much as I hate to admit such," Kheviel said with brief interruption of Xuan, "I believe Calico has mumbled such concerns of mortals." He gave a rather exasperated sigh following that. "She's ... been cranky over certain people who feel her 'touch' - or some such - ending up killing themselves because of 'the end of the world' ..."

He lapsed into silence, feeling all too well the resigned nature of such words. The end... if it wasn't enough for him to be seeing his end at last, but to also witness what could be nothing left of the world - or worlds - he knew just... icing on the cake really. If he had to die to make things better, make it right, then he accepted that. Always had, every time he took a job. But ... not the world with it.

Xuan gave a sigh as well. "It is true, and I have no doubt that perhaps others feel this... and the younger ones brought back cannot afford to have no place in which to rest and be supported. We fell once from a lack of faith. Some are drawn closer to us by this, but many more have also cursed the gods for what has befallen, and many of our renewed cannot protect or aid very much at all." The voice had lightened somewhat from what it had been, a bit wispier and more saddened almost. "It pains me to think, in truth, that Kishara may also be affected such. It is her world after all suffering, whether He intends it or not."

Xuan shifted uncomfortably, and rubbed at one eye then, almost absently. "Without Him, the rest of us have nothing left either. We must do what we can, as we can. Somehow. If not only for Him, for everything. I, personally, don't think I could bear to see Kishara fall again. Not in my current state."

Kheviel felt something he hadn't before from the dragon but kept silent. It was something he knew well enough himself though, and he would have to address it later perhaps. We won't, Kheviel assured, trying to soothe the dragon.

Sosiqui
"I believe many of the young gods are feeling the strain, feeling helpless before the onslaught... though some revel in it, I'll admit." Phaedra, for one, though it was getting to the point where he'd be willing to restore balance to things solely because it would piss her off. "She will not fall, not if the Dragons hold strong - she has strength in her as well, still, even if uncertainty surrounds her. I saw her, once, but before we became Tien Lung." And I'm sorry I couldn't protect Koiso for you, Empress. Soon... soon. Perhaps.

Mintaka
There was a distinct snort of disapproval at revelling, followed by silence a moment. Xuan pursed his lips a moment, eyes focused on the other dragon. "Who else, of us, also knows? And how soon?"

Kheviel felt a dis-ease about things, something akin to an impending doom feeling. The what-if potentials were staggering and too many were unpleasant. He kept silent on the musings of how many gods outside the Dragon Kings actually did care about the state of things and setting them right. He hoped that something could be done; much as Xuan and he had butted heads - and likely would still - it'd really really... suck if he was unable to actually do anything to help this all.

Suck more if the 'sacrificing' of the mortals to bring the pantheon back was for naught, too. But that one he certainly kept to himself.

Sosiqui
"I have spoken with Zhijian, Fangbridle - he goes to seek his tack, I believe, a task set to him by the Twin Crown. Otherwise..." Tian Yue spread his hands, a look of regret on his face. "I am trying, but we seem to be spread all over the land." Which still makes no sense whatsoever. "I do know that Futs Lung's original host failed him, and that Shenlei, Shen Lung, is seeking out a new vessel. I have my Aoide seeking information on the others... but it is difficult. If you have not spoken with our Lord recently, though, it may be prudent to make yourself known once more. It may reassure him, at the very least."

Mintaka
Xuan nodded slowly, displeased by the news of one dragon fallen by lost host and another seeking a new vessel. That left them incomplete in supporting the crown; at least in terms of numbers. They could make up that difference.

"I shall, now that I am stronger," Xuan said evenly. "It is not a burden I would have otherwise wished upon my host, to deal with the Twin Crown as He is; Kheviel ... it's a bit daunting to him."

Hey now... that didn't need to be public knowledge, Kheviel whined slightly. He didn't want to admit he disliked the notion of even being near Destruction; perhaps just an innate fear of the end, perhaps... concern he might say something wrong, too. After all, he'd had a hard enough time with the Dragon within, but what about a full fledged god? Who had punished others?

I'd rather be honest, Xuan Yi said calmly. Aside, it is my duty and task to seek Destruction and talk to Him. Not yours. I would not ask such of you if you were not willing... or ready. His presence in such form can be quite ... bothersome to most.

"I hope fervently that more of us may be found and brought together. I presume our scattering is merely due to the choosing of a proper host; after all, even though there are many mortals, not every one makes the cut - as was proven." Xuan sighed then, rubbing the bridge of the nose a moment. "If there was or is a way I could help further, do let me know."

Sosiqui

"In his current aspect, wilder all the time - he is intimidating to most beings with sense, I think," Tian Yue said, with a nod. "I simply fear... there was a Beginning of All. There could be an end." Everything devoured up by Destruction, and then in the end... what? Our Lord devouring himself, tail by tail, until nothing is left and All is Naught. His own tail lashed once, sharply, at the thought. "I will do what I can, to the best of my ability. My rooms are in the Pantheon as well, marked with stars and my dragon sigil - you are welcome at any time. Your host as well, naturally," he added, with a smile for Kheviel, whom he knew was still within, somewhere.

Mintaka
"It is good to know," Xuan said, "I shall keep it in mind, as well he will too."

Kheviel gave a bit of a sheepish smirk. "The thought it welcomed," he said giving a slight stretch. "I'll be sure that we make a chance to see Destruction. Not that there is all that much else going on to distract."

Xuan gave thought again to the comment of a beginning and an end. "I do not think now is yet the time... if the end were meant, it would have been in our great fall before, not once more when a second birth arises. We merely need to set things right again; even amongst us there is no perfection." A light chuckle at such an admittance; after all, they were still subject to the same flaws as their mortals when it came to some things, such as love and power.

Sosiqui
"I hope so..." Tian Yue paused. "I was with Destruction as he brought an end to a distant world, in wind and fire and a rain of oil. It was great and glorious and terrible. According to Him, it did not host sentient life. But the supply of such cannot be infinite... and surely such an act cannot be without consequences." He shook his head. "But no, we will prevail. We must. There would be no sense to any of this without hope and the will to survive."

Mintaka
"We should be able to persist, so long as mortals believe, no?" Xuan mused then, picking up slightly on Kheviel's musings along the same vein. "Perhaps a second prong, aside our own fork for the Twin Crown is to see the mortals themselves... see if any can be inspired or hold true still. Times have changed, yes... this much is evident from my host alone, but ..."

Kheviel took an advantage of the pause. "I know there has to be faithful still in this day, even with or without you guys still around. Sorry for the frankness but... I know even before Xuan happened I still held some reverence. I was never open about it, but still! What about the mortals still actually believing? Even if too many are too young to do much about it..."

He lulled into a silence, losing where he wanted to go precisely. But... the gods needed mortals, this was clear. There had to be some mortals still looking. Perhaps the joining of an effort to do something about Harmodius AND get the mortals rallied and give them hope? Something along those lines...

You have a point... we cannot protect everyone or everything, but an infusion of faith may help at least somewhat. If not for Him, then for some of the others who can help us. Maybe...

Xuan gave a slight sigh and shifted. "I will seek him out as soon as I can.. is there anything I should be aware about the Twin Crown when I present myself?"

Sosiqui
"Some do believe," Tian Yue said, smiling, thoughts of Penny immediately coming to his mind. "I have one follower myself - only the one, so far, but she is clever and bright in her belief. She has come to the Pantheon before - but I have warned her away for now. Though she met Desiderio before, I fear should she meet an unpleasant deity. Still, she is mine." He lifted his chin a bit, pleased. "So there is still the ability to believe, to turn to the gods in dark times rather than to blame."

The other question... he looked thoughtful. "He is wild," he said, finally. "But I do not believe I need to caution Qian Lung about matters of respect and courtesy. These things you know."

Mintaka
Xuan Yi gave a chortle at the last words from the fellow Dragon. "Aye, I do, Tien. I do... but knowledge is power, and knowing what I am walking into helps. Surprises are never pleasant..."

The dragon grew slightly pensive. "As for unpleasant deities, one could have such a run-in anywhere I am afraid. They do not all reside here, for better or worse. And for reasons all their own." A slight snort, and shake of the head followed the words. "I can think of one at least who wants nothing to do with the presence of Destruction, but that was her own doing." A shrug then.

"I take it we shall all convene - as many of us as there are - as soon as we are all 'found' again?"

Sosiqui
"Indeed, though I would seek our Lord sooner, so he knows you are here. He may well have a task for you, or simply find his heart eased by the knowledge that another of his dragons are well. He cares for us," Tian Yue said, simply.

Mintaka
"As we for him," Xuan said.

All for one and one for all, Kheviel mused to himself.

And what does that mean? Xuan asked, uncertain of what the mortal meant. And was answered with silence. Rather then press the matter the dragon addressed the other there.

"Perhaps I've enough of a mind after a rest to seek him today if possible, if not then within the week if I can manage."

Sosiqui
"I am sure it will be his joy to see you well," Tian Yue said, with a grin. "Do you happen to know where any of our other siblings might be? Zhijian I know, Futs Lung was not yet embodied last I heard, the others... are proving difficult."

Mintaka
Xuan gave a pause, thinking. "No, not offhand... nor does Kheviel, far as I can tell, but if you'd like us to keep an eye and ear out, we can." The dragon spent a moment playing with one pointed ear in further thought. "Three of how many? I hope there are more then just us... it would be odd otherwise. But then how many gods have been scattered to the winds in the far corners..."

A quick headshake. "I am sure somehow we can bring ourselves together again."

Sosiqui
"Nine," Tian Yue said, quietly, then bowed and came back up with a smile. "It has been a pleasure seeing you again, my... sibling. If you should ever seek me, simply come to my chambers, or send a servant or friend. My Aoide is usually present even when I am not."

Mintaka
Xuan gave a mirthful chuckle at the word sibling, bemused far too much inwardly for Kheviel's comfort. "I shall keep it in mind, should I find another, or simply need the company." The dragon gave a once over of the host's body and sighed slightly. "Before I do anything more a quick bathing would probably do wonders. Particularly before seeing our Lord again."

I am not that dirty! Kheviel protested. Aside, what was with that laughing?

Ancient History

Enough procrastinating.

Tian Yue stood in the doorway of his treasury, a frown on his face. Nebula, and the goddess she bore, may have been highly unpleasant topics to think about - but there were questions that had to be answered. It was true that procrastinating further would solve the problem, in a sense, as Nebula would inevitably fall under Phaedra's growing influence and more than likely cease to exist, yet the Dragon felt that he owed the Aoide some sort of... explanation.

Her life will be short, and has not been pleasant. I can't see her lot improving under Greed's dominion, either. Tian Yue shook his head. I couldn't seem to give her what she wanted most, and I certainly can't rescue her... but I can do this, surely...

Surely. But where to begin? Though Nebula had a strange feeling about her, akin to the familiarity that Shartha and Lao Shu carried as his Stars, none of the other names in Tian Yue's memory seemed to fit properly. The only one that seemed at all likely was the Tiger, but somehow that refused to work, as if the name itself knew it was wrong and stubbornly refused to stick to the Aoide.

Tian Yue gave his hoard a grumpy look. There was a great deal of empty space, naturally - adding treasures to his collection was nowhere near a priority, no matter what Phaedra said. But what he really regretted was the lack of books. He remembered many volumes of lore had once been ready at hand, but that had been long ago. Perhaps the knowledge was lost to the ravages of time and memory now.

Knowledge. Hadn't Gianfar mentioned a library? "Toki," he called, turning and peering out into the rest of his chambers, one hand resting on the doorframe.

The Aoide popped up almost immediately, his bunny ears bobbing. "My Lord?"

"Is there a library here, in the Pantheon?" Tian Yue couldn't imagine any other libraries nearby still remaining whole. Books weren't valuable per se, but they did burn.

Toki nodded, so enthusiastically that his bunny ears tilted forward alarmingly, and the Aoide clapped his hands over them to keep them from falling. "Yes, my Lord! Only turn corners and you will surely find it."

"Turn corners, huh. Very well... thank you, Toki." The Aoide hovered for a moment more, then shook his head and darted off when no further orders came. Tian Yue padded out into the outer chamber, then opened the door and went out into the long hallway, each door glorious, marking the chambers of the gods.

It was empty, as it always seemed to be. Divine beings, race of hermits, he thought, sourly. Being alone with one's thoughts in this Age of Destruction was dangerous; he could feel his Lord's influence gnawing even at the edges of his own mind, subtly pushing emotion into channels befitting the Twin Crown's current element. Doubt, worry, inadequacy-

Tian Yue gave that thought a hard mental stomp. I wonder if the rest of the Pantheon is as prone to angsting as I seem to be? That idea was almost amusing, and as he paced down the corridor, 'turning corners' as Toki had suggested, he smiled wryly at the thought of all the gods stuck in their rooms, writing emo poetry in red glitter pen on black paper.

Another turn, and then there was a door Tian Yue hadn't seen before. This wasn't a new thing, since the layout of the Pantheon seemed to merrily shift around with no regard for order, sense, or the laws of physics, but this door bore the markings of scholars. There was a faint shimmer of silver on the floor in front of the door, and the Dragon smiled. I think a certain enthusiastic dragon has been here with his master... either Gianfar's chambers proper or the library. Either would do.

When a knock elicited no response, Tian Yue turned the knob and found the door open. The scent of dust, old wood and ancient paper met his nostrils as he stepped inside, and his tail wagged a bit under his robes as he took in the sight. The library was massive, a veritable labyrinth. Here and there were trails in the dust, footsteps and other marks of passage.

Well. If this doesn't have what I'm looking for, it probably doesn't exist. Tian Yue felt almost giddy as he walked in amongst the shelves, quickly moving beyond where others had been. His robes swished up dust from the floor with every step, but he didn't much care; dust was better than ash, at any rate.

The problem had changed - he still didn't know where to begin, but in a far different sense now that the shelves loomed around him. It was probably too much to hope for a card catalog or the Dewey Decimal System. Tian Yue paused and looked at the spines of the books nearest to him. Several of them weren't in an alphabet he recognized, but as he watched the letters subtly shifted until they made sense. Sea Slugs of Viratha... A Young Qibal's Guide to Shells... Exploring the Acid Seas... hm. Not helpful.

Well, it seemed to be a magical library. He cleared his throat. "Er... I am Tian Yue, Dragon King Tien Lung. I seek information on my own past and history - ancient, well before the Fading - regarding the Court of Tien Lung Shaiming and the Stars of the Zodiac."

His words echoed among the shelves, and he frowned. Nothing seemed to have happened - but when he turned around the next corner, he heard an odd, distant grating noise, as if something was moving. The strange sounds continued as he kept walking, and once he thought he saw a shelf ahead of him move.

At last the path through the dust dead-ended at a bookshelf stocked with a wide manner of objects - not only books, but also crumble-edged scrolls, stone tablets, and crystals. He reached out one hand and touched the spine of a book at random, thoughtfully, then picked it up. It fell open in his hands with a soft crackle and a puff of dust; he had to work hard to avoid sneezing all over the delicate pages.

The hand, he realized as he looked at the book, was familiar - delicate spidery letters, but much firmer, less shaky... Toki's writing... For a moment, Tian Yue had a new appreciation for his quirky Aoide's sheer age. He had been faithful for a very, very long time indeed, and part of that time was reflected on the page in front of him. The handwriting and the wording all spoke of a mind much more confident, clear, and stable than Toki's current state.

... hid when the Empress told him to, and listened to the words they spoke together, mother to firstborn son. A gift, as my Lord said, of indescribable worth. He has now some greater confidence in his pursuit...

For a moment, Tian Yue's eyes lost focus and the words blurred. The memory was extremely faint even with the summons of the writing, but it carried a thread of giddy joy - and wasn't that an odd thought, the idea of Shaiming being giddy?

Then the Dragon shook his head, and he closed the book with only a little twinge of regret. He wasn't here to serve his own needs, tempting though it might have been. There were several other volumes like the one he carried on the shelf, and he gathered all seven into his arms, wrinkling his nose hard against the dust his movements stirred up.

Surely the answer lay somewhere in Toki's ancient accounting of Tien Lung's days.

Knock Knock?
Meepfur
Zhijian paced down the hallway towards Tian Yue's chambers, messenger bag slung over his shoulder. At some point, once he'd found the rest of his tack, he was going to have to find another, nicer one - this one was looking more than just a little dingy. He didn't see it ever out-living its usefulness, but he could definitely see it developing holes, and that would be no good whatsoever. The last thing he needed was for important things to fall out of his bag.

What he did need was a bath. He wasn't quite smelly-dirty, which was why he hadn't bothered to do anything about it yet. If the blood he hadn't yet licked out of his fur bothered anyone, they'd just have to deal with it.

Rising to his feet from all fours, he knocked on his brother's door.

Sosiqui
Toki was humming contentedly, if extremely off-key, to himself when he heard the knock on the door. "Oh! A visitor, Lord!" he called out, his real ears perking up a little and his fake ones waggling energetically back and forth with his movements. "Should I show them in?"

"See who it is," came Tian Yue's muffled reply from the treasury. "If it's not important... then I'd rather not be bothered right now."

Toki nodded. "Understood!" His lord was on important business, yes, important business in researching the past, and he marched over to the door with firmness in mind. He'd send them away, yes, he would, he-

His eyes widened to saucer size, practically, when he saw who was behind the door, and he dropped to one knee at once. "L-lord Fangbridle!" The Aoide glanced in the direction of the treasury at once. "LORD FANGBRIDLE," he said again, much louder.

There was a sudden flurry of movement, and then Tian Yue darted out, holding onto his robes so he wouldn't trip on them.

"Brother!" he said as he made it to the door, lightly resting one hand on Toki's shoulder to release him from his obeisance to the other Dragon King. "Welcome!"

Meepfur
Now that was the kind of reception he liked. Zhijian grinned at the rabbit-ear-wearing aoide, tail flicking at his ankles. 'Lord' was not something he heard quite enough of, these days. The grin and a slight nod were his only direct response to Toki - his master was far more important.

"Tian Yue," he purred, making to step inside. Invitations weren't something he typically waited for, and besides that, he took allowance into his fellow dragon's rooms as something of a given. "How goes your search?"

He wasn't much for small talk, either.

Sosiqui
"At ease, Toki - please go and continue reading where I left off, so no time is wasted," Tian Yue directed. The Aoide nodded and jumped up, scurrying away to the treasury, and the dragon turned back to Zhijian.

"It goes well - I have found Qian Lung and Ti Lung both. They are well, and both dwelling here within the Pantheon. I believe I am near to locating Mang as well, and with any luck he will know of Shen Lung's location or have tidings of Futs Lung. We are coming together, brother." A tide of excitement rose inside him at the thought. Having all nine Dragon Kings ranged around the Twin Crown... nothing, nothing would be better than that. They could recreate or destroy the world at their choosing, together. "And you? Have you had any success in locating your tack?"

Meepfur
Qian Lung, Ti Lung, Tien Lung, Ying Long. "Four of us, then. Perhaps five. Very good." Granted, two of them hadn't needed finding, but it was certainly something - and meant he still had time, enough at least to find his bit. "It shouldn't be long, at that rate."

Asked of his own progress, he grinned and opened his bag to draw out his bridle. Even missing its bit, it was a magnificent thing, with bark made like to leather and flowers blooming from it. He never got tired of looking at it, and stared at it himself as he held it up. "The bit is missing, but...it is a beginning."

Sosiqui
"Oh, marvelous!" Tian Yue was actually a little envious for a moment - what would it be like to be in dragon form, wear that spun treasure of Yggdrasil, and carry the Twin Crown? - but the moment passed, quickly. That was the Fangbridle's throne, not his.

The exquisite bridle did, however, carry a bit of memory with it, and he wrinkled his forehead in thought. "Brother... I remember something. A fragment." Stars - Universe. A banquet... a gift? "There is... a saddle to go with that, is there not?"

Meepfur
Zhijian fairly preened. He was proud of his bridle, and proud of having found it. It had been made expressly for him, and the Empress herself had had a hand in making it. Though his ultimate loyalties did not lie with her, she had been consort to the Emperor he adored, and he remembered her fondly. He would have to go and visit her, once he had the time...

"Yes," he answered, bringing himself back to the immediate. "There was a saddle, and there was armor."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue closed his eyes for a moment, giving into the insistent memory stirred up by his brother's words. Scales and stars intertwined, as happened so many times across the vast span that made up Shaiming's lifetime - but this time was special. The choker gleamed around Universe's neck, and that was one promise, but there were others...

That was tempting to delve into, but Zhijian was waiting; Tian Yue forced himself to move on, with a twinge of regret. "A saddle... bright, gleaming starmetal... a gift to the Twin Crown, for his riding. Yes. Forged in the fire of a star's heart and shaped by the claws of Tien Lung... I remember it. I remember the making, and the giving." He smiled, softly at the memory, and opened his eyes. "But I don't know where it is," he added, the smile fading a bit.

Meepfur
As he so often did, Zhijian dropped to all fours. His bridle he let rest gently on the floor, while he moved to twine affectionately around Tian Yue. There was reassurance in the touch, and gratitude and camaraderie. He knew the pain both of remembering and of not. "I will find it," he said, "Wherever it is."

Though he loved all his siblings, he was fast developing a certain partiality to Tien Lung in this new life; he was the only other Dragon King in residence here, the only one he had yet spoken to, and they had stood together before their Lord. "And when I do, I would be honored if you were the one to help me ready myself to go before Him."

Sosiqui
Tian Yue paused, then smiled and let himself play lightly with his brother's furred ears, knowing the touch would not be misconstrued. "I would be - am- also honored in turn to assist you. You helped me to present myself anew to our Lord, after all," he added, quietly. Zhijian's quiet support when it seemed very few others believed in him had been a powerful touchstone.

And one I must remember I have, no matter what happens - I am a Dragon King, I will always have my brothers and sister. Always. I seem to forget that too easily. "Where are you going next, brother? The thought of such sacred relics scattered around like so much chaff... mortals so ignorant of what they have. Disgusting." Even though he wasn't in dragon form, Tian Yue still bared his teeth for a moment, draconic instinct coming to the fore.

Meepfur
Zhijian let slip one of his rumbling purrs, punctuated only by a nod of acknowledgment. He'd never been one to actively think about being helpful; he just did what, in his view, was necessary, and gave loyalty where it was due. The only 'helpful' he ever gave much thought to, especially these days, was where servants were concerned. That was a kind of helpful he had use for.

"Back to the world of the Tenquistel, to go looking for my bit." Lips curled, and what had been a purr turned into a throaty snarl, full of the dragon's annoyance. "It's at the bottom of a lake, from the sound of it."

"And it's cold there," he added distastefully. Swimming wasn't so bad, but freezing cold water? Honestly!

Sosiqui
"At the bottom of a lake? How did it come to be there?" Tian Yue frowned; that could hardly be good for the bit, made of stern stuff or not. "Tenquistel?"

Meepfur
"I haven't the faintest idea. First my aoide had it, then Tenquistel had it, then someone stole it, and now I'm told that it's underwater somewhere." Zhijian grimaced - couldn't anyone just hold onto something for once?! "Maybe the thief couldn't swim."

It was small consolation.

Sosiqui
"And the Aoide did not survive... or has not presented itself to you once more? That is a shame," Tian Yue said with genuine regret. He had come to realize how incredibly valuable Toki was, despite his now fundamentally broken nature. "These... Tenquistel... were they your followers of old?" A twinge of jealousy there; if he had any followers that had been specifically his, he did not remember them now.

Well, there is Penny, but that's not the same as an entire people...

Meepfur
"Did not survive, according to the Tenquistel." It was probably just as well, because even if he had, Zhijian would be very much inclined to have his head for this whole fiasco...except he could really use an aoide. But the offending servant was long gone, and so his god was saved the dilemna.

"They are," he answered, nodding. "A horse-people." Perhaps they could furnish him with a servant, though they probably wouldn't be half so useful as an aoide. Replacing humans when they grew old and died was an annoying inconvenience.

Sosiqui
"That is fortunate... and they have not forgotten? That is a rare gift, brother. Rare indeed. Perhaps some of their number can be coerced into using gift or skill to fish out your bridle for you?"

Meepfur
"No, they have not, though they weren't very inclined to believe me at first." A gift? Well, perhaps. Again, it was the kind of thing Zhijian didn't think about much. The Fangbridle took a lot of things for granted, truth be told - not that he realized or cared.

"Given how things have gone so far, I had better do it myself." Who knew what else might happen to it, otherwise? Yes, it was definitely safer. "I'd rather not lose track of it again," he said dryly.

Sosiqui
"Well, I wish you luck... I would offer my help, but I'm not sure I'm any better with water. Kawagiri would be a better choice." Tian Yue smiled, sheepish. "There is a matter of one of my Aoide to tend to as well. She has been taken by a goddess as host." The smile turned into a vague scowl. "Which would not be a problem, except that she is cruel. I cannot do anything about that - it's not my right, my place - but it doesn't make me happy in the least."

Meepfur
Zhijian might have lamented the general absence of their fellow Dragon Kings again, had Tian Yue not continued to another subject; normally, he wouldn't have been bothered by one deity taking another aoide - or anyone else - as a host, but Tian Yue was not just another deity. He was a Dragon King, and they were favored. They were above the others, in Zhijian's thinking at least.

The great cat's ears flattened, and his tone turned distinctly disapproving. "One does not simply take from a Dragon."

Sosiqui
"If anyone would dare, it would be this one. Her name is Phaedra, and she is Greed - one of Destruction's Seven." Tian Yue frowned. "Could I have prevented it, I would, but she took Nebula when she was out of my sight. But now... there is nothing I can do, even if it does bother me. Our Lord has seen her and granted her chambers, I know that much - and if he approves of her choice of host, I shall not challenge it. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made." He left unspoken the relief that Nebula and Phaedra weren't under his roof anymore. They were too troubling now, the host too painful to watch when he could not help, the goddess too crafty and deliberately baiting.

Meepfur
As quickly as it had come, Zhijian's indignation melted away - if their Lord approved, then there truly was no right to contend the matter. But Greed had returned? Hmm. Perhaps he'd need to keep an especially careful eye on his things...when he was actually around to do so. Right now, his worries lay with things that had already been lost.

Things he really ought to get back to, despite the fact that he was not looking forward to going swimming in winter. After bumping his head against Tian Yue in another show of affection, he straightened up. "I should return to my search."

"Would you...be so kind as to keep my bridle safe for me, while I am gone?" He didn't want to just leave it sitting in his room, but the last thing he needed was for something to happen to it if he carried it on his hunt.

Sosiqui
Once again, Tian Yue was gratified by the request. "Of course, brother - I have a treasury room in my chambers. Your bridle will be safe there, and if anyone tries to lay their hands on it, they will meet my claws." He nodded, sharply. Phaedra taking Nebula was one thing; anyone trying to take a Dragon King's sacred artifacts was entirely another.

Meepfur
"Thank you, brother," he purred gratefully, clearly relieved. He knew his bridle would be safe in the keeping of his fellow King. "With any luck, I will return for it soon."

Sosiqui
"Travel safely - I wish you every success. Go well, brother." Tian Yue laid one hand on Zhijian's head as if in blessing, then smiled. "Come back, and I will prepare you for our Lord's riding."

The Myth in the Mirror

Thunk.

"Ow!" Tian Yue winced and sat upright, rubbing his chin; he'd nearly dozed off again, his head slipping from where he'd rested it in one hand. The desk surface was most unforgiving, but the jolt did work to wake him up. Someone had taught Crispin that trick for studying back in college; he didn't remember who it was, now. So many ancient names, places, and jumbled fragments of memory were competing for attention in his mind that he counted it fortunate he remembered even that much.

No wonder Shaiming had Toki write things down. Even the memory of a god isn't infinite. It seemed Tien Lung had turned at one point to external memory backups, short summaries of less-important events and greater detail for more vital moments in the Dragon King's long life. The task of reading it all, though, was difficult for several reasons. It stirred up his own memory in unpredictable ways, which was highly distracting, and a great deal of it was... well... stupefyingly boring. He'd been reading the minutes of some council or something when he'd fallen asleep.

Again.

And no wonder Shaiming took such joy in courting Universe, if this was what he had to look forward to otherwise. Tian Yue made a face; would such things come to plague him as well? Right now his 'court' couldn't even be called such, but it seemed in the past Tien Lung had done a great deal of management, intervention and even herding of the gods and godlings of the Pantheon.

I don't think I have that kind of... presence now, to be able to manage that. He could see Shaiming doing it, but he didn't have the same kind of innate authority that the ancient Dragon King had held. Not yet, anyway. Perhaps, in time...

Tian Yue shook his head. Enough dawdling! He forced himself to look down at the book, though he did start skimming the pages a bit, looking for something besides meetings and court scenes and the like.

At last, there was something new; Toki's handwriting shifted a bit, less cramped and blocky, and Tian Yue peered more closely at the text.

They are the Kings and Queens of their races, noble beings unmatched among animals, an honor to their Lord and Lady. It is my Lord's hope that their influence and fair presence will serve to anchor Divine to Mortal, Heavens to Earth - to remind great Universe of the lands below his infinite lights, and exalted Tien Lung of what it is he protects. A fine idea, truly.

A banquet shall be held for those Thirteen worthy creatures, to welcome them into the court and stars of Tien Lung. The preparations, alas, must tear me from this narrative; there is much to be done.

Tian Yue's heart leapt. This was it! He shifted in his seat and leaned in to focus on the page. The next part was a list of supplies... boring. He turned the page impatiently, scanning until he found another pertinent section.

Perhaps the whims and whimsies of the Court made the banquet more grandiose and gaudy than we had intended - what was planned to be a gracious but simple affair grew into a raucous event. The worthy Animals did well to not spook and quail beneath the curious gazes of the gathered gods; well were they chosen as representatives, the finest of their kingdoms! Yet only Twelve seats at the high table filled; the Cat did not attend, and sorrowfully my Lord Shaiming broke that refused throne to pieces with his mighty tail.

Cat...

Thirteen...

Tian Yue sat back, very slowly and deliberately, his mind flicking quickly through everything he could remember about his Stars. Nowhere, nowhere in his memory was there anything about a Cat. With so much, such a vast span of time to capture in one mind... no doubt things had fallen by the wayside. Things dubbed unimportant.

Forgotten.

He turned the page, then another, then another, until something else caught his eye.

Lao Shu came before the throne of Tien Lung, begging aid for his people - it seems that Below a war is waged between the kingdoms of Cat and Rat. Yet it is not the duty nor place of the Worldshield to intervene in such mortal matters, and Lao Shu was advised to plead before Animals or (should he be so daring) the Hunt.

There was a sinking feeling in Tian Yue's stomach. I know this legend - not from dragon memory, but from human. The August Personage of Jade and the animals of the Chinese Zodiac... the story changes and shifts, but...

How odd, to find myth and memory coming together. It was a very strange feeling, nearly unreal, dreamlike. He felt foolish for not seeing the correlation before, but that mythology class had been a long time ago, and Crispin had been much more interested in Thor and Loki than the myths and legends of Asia.

Perhaps Shaiming had forgotten, but one thing Crispin remembered (if only for the purpose of passing the final exam): the failure of the Cat to make it into the Chinese Zodiac was blamed on the Rat.

I think it's time to pay Lao Shu another visit.
