QuetzalcoatlQuetzalcoatl is the Aztec god of wind, storms, light, the morning star, and (depending on what book you're reading) agriculture. I've always been fascinated by him and I like to do a drawing of him every now and then. This is the first one I've done in quite some time though. This started out as a quick sketch of Quetzalcoatl's head the other day in English class. I liked the way it turned out and ended up adding more details and drawing the rest of him in. Too lazy to shade him, and I'm too afraid that I would mess him up anyways. I tried a new type of scale out on him, but I'm still not quite sure how to go about shading it... Sorry about the image quality, my digital camera hates me for some reason. Uh, don't ask why it's at an odd angle, cause I have no idea how it ended up like that...

Okay...so why doesn't he have snakes for feathers? mrgreen
Uhh...anyway...that's really cool, actually! I did that level of detailing on the scales of a dragon inspired aircar once, and gave myself hand cramps...It was ten years ago and my hand hurts just thinkin' about it. eek
You're using circular scales on the main body, it looks like, so they'd be shaped like little domes. Really easy to shade, so long as you keep your light source nice and consistent, should you ever shade him.
Since you're a little concerned about ruining the pic, try to get access to scanner, and then just make a print out of him. You can practice on that, instead, and not have to worry about damaging the original sketch if you have to erase something. At any rate, that's the simplest suggestion I can think of right offhand.

Snakes for feathers? Never read about that before... I'm confused on what parts of the scales to make lighter and which to make darker though. I don't know, I quite picture how to do it correctly. My dad's been talking about getting a scammer for the past year, though he still hasn't got one. The local library nor the school library has one (or at least to my knowledge they don't), so I have no way to get a print of it. ><

Crap. This stuff's hard to explain without pics. sweatdrop
If you've got something that's shaped kinda like a shallow dome (the bottom of a plate or bowl, maybe...) and a flashlight, you should get a good idea of how to treat those scales.
And....uh....yeah. Snakes for feathers. In some of the earliest depictions of Quezecoatl (or Queztalcoatl...either one works...) he had snakes on his wings that he would use to devour anyone who didn't make a sacrifice to him. The problem is...those depictions are very few and far between, so there's a very real possibility that the snakey version could be a different god entirely. It's really not certain, but should you ever come across the snakey version, he'll more than likely have snakes for feathers and be called Quezecoatl.

Sounds interesting. I'm definitely going to look into that, I'd love to see a picture. It's giving me a few more ideas for drawings... *ponders*
