In "Thus Spoke Zarathustra", Zarathustra mentions the Overman as one who would reject the philosophies of old, lead the people out of ignorance, etc. I believe the parameters that have been previously said are far too open. Otherwise, one could consider even Hitler to be an overman. He rejected the previous German goverment, replacing it with a socialist goverment, He led a mass of people, claiming he was leading them away from thier tainted ways, and he was hated by the common people outside of Germany. I am not a Neo-Nazi, so I refuse to have the parameters set so thin. I believe that there has not been an overman.

i would agree - the overman has not been achieved. the examples of overmen listed by others in this thread seem, to me, to just be exemplary individuals, but they are not overmen.

@ lore wren - in thus spoke zarathustra, nietzsche constantly referred to becoming and evolving into the overman, and while abraxas' point is valid, we do create what we become, it will probably best suit your understanding if we said that we are to become the overman rather than to create overmen.

@ germanicus - i agree with what your interpretation of the overman is, but there is more. at least from my interpretation, in thus spoke zarathustra, nietzsche not only emphasises these traits of the overman but he also emphasises that the end goal is for all men to work together to become overmen - it is not only centered around the self. you seem to focus on the applications of the overman idea to the individual, while there are also applications to the community.

like a bodhisattva?

also look into the concept of Adam Kadmon, as a kind of archetypal ideal human image. in a jungian twist, Adam Kadmon is used in kabbalistic work as the archetype of the pinnacle potential of human life and that through the kabbalah we can become aware of first the archetype then our potential in that archetype. half human, half divine. from that point on you strive to become Adam Kadmon though his depths are beyond your earthly sight. this concept is often blurredly pushed into the role of god or jesus.
also like the traditional role of disciple to master in asian religion. in hindu the master does not teach the student, but is a channel to the divine spirit and through this master the disciple can come to know the divine spirit and from this knowledge and interaction the student becomes like the master but more importantly one with the divine spirit.

now i dont know why i wrote all of that but some tiny fleeting thought made a connection and that is what i wrote.
good day all

i, too, am not sure how exactly what you wrote connects, but it does seem to relate in some way... perhaps after i think about it for a while we shall see the importance of the connexion

I have only read 1/4 of,"So said zorothustro", or however you spell it, but I think I know part of what he meant.

I would have to say Tyler Durden(both are imaginary, but one is more imaginary than the other) If you don't know who Tyler Durden is, watch fight club some time(ALL THE WAY THROUGH NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU GET OFFENDED, OR GROSSED OUT). Make sure to make yourself soem cream soup before starting the movie, and after the first 30 minutes of it try not to, well if you make the soup then you'll know what I mean.

Perhaps, light yagami, or the unnamed L(who also goes by ryozake) in the anime Death Note. Where Lite, a literal Genius, with extreme mental abilities, finds a lost book, called a death note. Apon touching it he finds that he can see a monster looking for it called a shinigami. The shinigami explains that every hundred years or so, he writes a few humans names in the death note, whose remaining life span are added onto his. During this life that he has attained via death note, he can not die, no matter what happens. Also he, and his race, can only be seen by eachother, and those who have touched any page, or the cover, of any death note. The boy learns that he can kill anyones name who he writes in the death not, with a few strict rules attached. And he uses it to kill criminals and outlaws. However, he plans to rule a perfect world as a god. On the other hand, another LITERAL GENIUS, who is just as smart as Lite, if not smarter, is working on the investation to find Kirra, which is the name given to lite's alter ego. The poliece think it is wrong to kill, and take life and death into you're own hands, even if it is criminals. On one hand, Lite is the good guy, on the other is the bad guy. Same With L. The plot thickens and this very political, strategical, and overall amazing anime, gets more complex, and interesting with every epesode. I would recomend watching it from teh beginning to present(it's a new show so there arn't many epsesodes yet) to anyone who is interested in strategical things such as this. It is really quite interesting. I really couldn't explain lite to you without explaining the shows charactor build up, which would require you to see the first few epesodes.
