Daphne wandered absentmindedly through the undergrowth. Today she would pretend to be a huntress. She stalked leaves. She stalked shadows and insects. She'd persued a few small animals, but hadn't managed to get close. Still, after catching a few large insects she fancied herself quite fierce.

After picking the tasty parts off of her tiny prey, she settled comfortably in the shadow of a large bush. She'd wait for something to come by. She might chase it. She told herself she likely wouldn't bother, having already proven herself quite capable. Daphne was lying to herself, of course. But she liked it better that way.

Tamaska sat on her hind legs, wagging her tail. She was bored. She was almost always bored. Her ears perked up, hearing the leaves in the brush move. She saw a squirrel come out and so, she lay herself low to the ground.

After a few seconds of watching the squirrel, Tamaska pounced after it. The squirrel ran away and Tamaska gave chase after it. Tamaska had to make a sudden turn to her right as the squirrel ducked under a large brush.

Lying in the cool darkness at the bush's base, Daphne had drifted off to sleep. She lay stretched out on the detritus of shed twigs and leaves. Her tongue protruded from the side of her mouth and a bead of saliva was pushed closer to the tip with every release of breath.

Something came crashing into her hiding place, spraying the ground litter into the air and onto the pup. Daphne sprang up and yelped as she was prodded by the small, sharp twigs protruding all around her.

As she was shaking the debris off her face, she saw it sitting paralyzed in front of her. There was nowhere for it to go.

She'd never killed a vertebrate before, and the squirrel's death was slow and clumsy. The general idea of penetrating the flesh came into play, but the pup had neither the experience nor the physical refinement to dispatch the animal in any clean manner.

Daphne was incredibly proud of herself. Her ego was rarely substantiated by actual accomplishments. She wanted to bring her first kill out into the sun where she could see it.

Sweeping the carcass off the ground in her jaws, she stepped out into the open. She was so focused on her own small victory that it was a moment before she noticed the silver pup in the clearing. Eyeing her, she flattened her ears and growled softly. Someone trying to steal her kill already?

Tamaska lay low to the floor as she walked through the brush. She stopped as she smelled the scent of squirrel blood. She trotted, lightly, on her paws through the brush now. Who knew what would kill the squirrel she had given chase to. A bear? A hawk?

Tamaska sat on her hind legs once again as she moved into the clearing. She could smell the blood now, as if she was the one to have killed the squirrel. Her ears perked up at the motion of the leaves of the brush as they were brushed away by a green pup.

Tamaska saw the squirrel carcass in this new pup's mouth. This pup had bitten, killed the squirrel that she had given chase to. What would this pup do now? Tamaska was about to get on her paws when she heard the growls made by the pup. The pup had lowered her ears and started to growl at Tamaska.

What was a pup to do? Tamaska pondered. The green pup had killed the squirrel she had chased after. The shy young wolf backed up, into the brush and laid herself low to the ground. "Hello," she gave a soft yip. She didn't want to get too entangled with this pup that killed the squirrel.

Daphne was somewhat suprised by the pup's submission, though she tried hard to hide it.

What should she do?

Her tiny puppy mind turned the circumstances over and over. Well, this puppy obviously recognized her overpowering dominance, she thought, painfully distorting the situation in her favor as was her habit.

She'd do her best to act the part.

Daphne trotted jauntily past the pup with her head held high and the squirrel dangling from her jaw.

Dropping the squirrel a few feet away, she casually flopped down on the ground.

Her facade broke down there as she realized that, while she'd managed to kill the squirrel by herself, someone else normally fed on a carcass before her and she wasn't sure what to do with an untouched animal. Completely forgetting the presence of the other pup, she wimpered and prodded the squirrel with her paw.

Tamaska studied the green pup as she ignored Tamaska and jauntily strolled past a few feet away from her. Tamaska pondered what the she-pup was going to do. She watched as the green pup flopped down to the floor, after dropping the squirrel. Tamaska pondered what was wrong with the pup when she smelled and heard another squirrel!

Tamaska ignored the whimper she heard from the strange pup and rushed after the squirrel she heard in the brush. She dashed left and right before slowing down and crouching low to the floor as she caught sight of the bushy, tail of a squirrel.
