Gradius, like a lot of Konami star titles, is built on memories. WTF moments if you will. Like the first time you were on the bridges in Contra when they exploded. Or in Life Force, when you reached the second stage and saw that it was traveling up.
Best thing to do is incorporate more new weapons and shapes to make with directed energy. ripple circles, round lasers, etc are good, and should see some new competition. On top of that, some new stage designs would do things good. We've had a few sand stages, but we could use more enemies made of sand. especially if you watched them form from it.
Or, on that note, a stage where the enemies form from the stage itself and assemble in a way similar to the yellow devil from Megaman.
