I think it fits the necessary qualifications. Transformation scenes, an animal sidekick (though this one doesn't talk), bad guys who are nearly polar opposites of their better rivals, a crush, colorful uniforms.

But these guys are totally slashable, even the villains 4laugh

I never thought of the Samurai Troopers (ronin warriors) as magical boys... but it's totally true!!

Yeah, I had to really think on it. It seemed like something that would have already been done, and like at first all I keep thinking about was Gundam--but we know that's not 'magical girl' in the least.
This show was the only thing I would watch when I was about nine.
