It took all Snaedis had in her not to snort at the cub as she blatantly explained she talked a bunch prior to Alcarin. The sheepish laugh escaped her notice, eyes instead going over to Alcarin and narrowing. Not out of ferocity, however. Moreso, it was out of curiosity. Was the cub stupid, or was there a physical reason for his inability to talk for himself? She couldn't help but wonder about the cub. Clearly they were related, if only by one parent.

Her attention was distracted over to Hibana again, and both eyebrows rose at her statement. Nowhere as a place. She smirked a little at Alcarin's snort. "Took you a bit to catch on, but you caught the lie." She said, amusement glittering in her eyes. At least the cub was good for a laugh, though she wasn't sure if she could laugh at her own mess-up. "I've been places with no names, I've been all over these lands." She said finally, shrugging and turning back to the lake. She glanced over at the cub when she answered her question on the pride, and made a small face.

"I'm a rogue." She said simply, turning back to them and snorting. "Prides aren't my preferred choice of living arrangements." She turned back and took another small drink from the water, pleased that it seemed to send the heat away from her. At least for a little while. She glanced at Alcarin, catching his attempt at hiding fatique and thirst, and without saying a word, made a point to move aside so he could get to the lake. After all, they must've been thirsty. It was hot out. For a moment, it was silent. But then again, there was Hibana.

"You must be thirsty." She said calmly, nodding to the lake. "Don't mind me, drink." She glanced around, unconsciously taking on a slightly maternal tone as she looked out for danger. These weren't her cubs but they were cubs on their own, and if there was an adult lioness around, it was their duty to protect them. Right? Right. ... Right?

A flicker of sudden frustration sprouted in Hibana. Alcarin was allowed to laugh at her, of course – he was her brother, and she could laugh at him back. But however much she wanted to think otherwise, this lioness seemed so determined to catch her up. This was not going the way she had expected at all. A tiny sigh huffed its way out of her and buried itself in the heat and the dust.

“I want to travel to places with no names and have lots of adventures too,” she said softly to the ground as Snaedis turned away to drink, her mood turning suddenly and briefly discouraged in the face of these setbacks. Everyone else she’d met had been nice, not that she’d met very many besides her family, so why wasn’t this working right?

Unexpectedly, at that thought cold crawled up her flanks despite the heat, as if something dark and nameless crouched in her mind. Then she felt Alcarin push his sweat-sticky flank against hers, and the world came back into focus. She would just have to try again, that's all. It had worked before, so it would work again. She looked back at the lioness, trying to shake off that lingering feeling of wrongness, and spoke with what seemed for all the world like her usual impetuosity. "If they had no names, why didn't you name them? That's the best part of exploring!"

He tried to meet Snaedis's gaze boldly, holding his head high. Alcarin really wasn’t used to anyone openly paying him so much attention. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to be noticed, just… It was so easy to get flustered sometimes.

He sensed his sister’s growing irritation in the sudden stiffening of her ears, and used it as an excuse to break eye contact with Snaedis and glance at her curiously. Even if Snaedis didn’t seem to be terribly fond of the optimistic adolescent, somehow Alcarin hadn’t even imagined that Hibana was even capable of resentment, as relentlessly sunny as she always seemed to be. The sudden departure from normality scared him enough that he moved closer to her for a moment, not really knowing if he was comforting her or himself.

He had meant to hang back politely, he really had, but at Snaedis’s words suddenly the little cub’s paws were bounding forward to sink themselves in the lovely cool mud on the bank. He stuck his muzzle in to drink, and, concluding that it felt absolutely wonderful, immediately plunged his whole head in after it. It came up soaked and spluttering, but happy with the relief. Why hadn’t Hibana followed him yet?
