The Galactic Federation was formed two hundred years ago, at the signing of the New Alderaan Peace Accords. Most of the former Republic worlds joined, with exception to the Sith, jedi, and Hutt territories.
The Federation is governed by a President, Congress, and Judicial branch. The primary function of the Federation is to Police worlds, and monitor, organize, and maintain trade routs and laws.

The Federal President oversees executive affairs in the Federation. His primary function is a civilian leader to the Police Force. Fearing an Emperor, the role of President has very little power, and must seek approval from the Congress for any peacetime police action.

True power lies in the hands of the Galactic Congress. It is comprised of two houses, the first is the Senate, where each world is represented by four senators. The other is the House of Worlds. Representation is based on planetary population in this house. They make and write the laws that govern the Federation.
Heading the Congress is the Chancellor. He carries a vote in both houses comparable to 31% the other representatives, and is the true head of the Federation.

The third branch of Federation power is the Office of the Judicators. At the top, there is the Conclave: 13 elder Judicators, and the highest legal voice in the Federation.

The Federal Police Force:
The Force has three major branches to it. The most prominent is the Federal Navy: The navy is comprised primarily of destroyers and cruisers. The Federation chose to use the Capital Ship Clause to build fifty Dreadnoughts, which head each fleet.
Each fleet has ten ships: three cruisers, and four destroyers, three carriers, and one Dreadnought. These fleets make dock at the Capital of a Sector, and are responsible for that sector's security. The remaining five hundred cruisers are on patrol along trade routes and borders.
The next branch is the Federal Marine Corps. They are equipped with the Tyr Powered Armor System. They handle all planetary matters.

SOLDIER:
SOLDIER is an elite military organization within the Federation. Some compare them to a militarized Jedi Order. SOLDIERs display amazing fighting prowess, and incredible power. While never fully explained to the public, leading guesses are that Force sensitive individuals are showered with Mako, increasing their potency and strength. The truth of the matter is much more dark and sinister.
A strain of the Nosferatu virus was dwindled down, and diluted. SOLDIERs are infected with this virus, which increases their strength, speed, and regenerative capabilities. The virus is then kept in check with a Mako shower, keeping their human side dominant, and increasing their Force Potency greatly.
SOLDIER equips their personnel with advanced vibro-blades with Materia slots. First Class SOLDIERs, however, are allowed to carry custom weapons such as the Buster Sword, and Masamune.
SOLDER is broken up into classes: 3rd, 2nd, and 1st, with First being the strongest. SOLDIER uniform is comprised of an armless sweater, BDU pants, a fighter's belt, boots, pauldrons, and gloves. Depending on the class, the color changes: 3rd is blue, 2nd is red, and 1st is purple.
SOLDIER generals get custom armor, typically involving a trench coat, and a variation of the standard issue.

Corporations based in the Federation.
Being based on Corellia, Big Business has a lot to say in the government of the Federation. Some of the larger companies are as follows:
Kuat Drive Yards: The Famous KDY builds most of the Federation's ships. Everything from their ferocious Dreadnoughts, to their Bomber craft. As such, they have a lot of power and infulence, however, they are the smalled of the giants that run the Galaxy.
Shinra Power Company: With the discovery of Mako, Shinra quickly began to replace Hypermatter reactors with their own, more efficient Mako Reactors. They, in essence, power the Federation. They also have a R&D department devoted to create more and more mako-powered machines. However, even with this stranglehold, they have one very powerful, and equal political rival.
Stark Industries: Stark Industries manufactures everything from baby cribs to heavy assault cannons. If a Federal Unit shoots something, you can bet that Stark built it. They are the greatest rival to the Shinra Company's political power. Similarly, they threaten their very existence with their mysterious "Arc Reactor"
