Here's something that might interest you all. According to this, it says that Asatruar will be recieving thier own burial ground in Denmark. I'm not sure if it's secular to one particular Kindred or to all Asatru, simply because my Swedish is not good enough to translate it beyond bad engrish and my friend who's Swedish read it and can't really tell, but still. Can someone confirm or deny this? XD

I think this is a huge step, especially for Denmark. Denmark's been pretty much (to my knowledge and from what I've heard of people) the most dangerous Nordic country when it comes to racism and naziism, so I'm surprised that they're ACTUALLY doing this.

What do you guys think?

Fluent Swedish here.

Yes, the danish now have a Heathen buirial place.

The icelandic have a "non-christian" graveyard in the south of the country and have had it for over 10 years now.

No, denmark isn't that "restricted" there is just the highest concentration of assholes in the general copenhagen area. And no, it's "nothing" when compared to a lot of places.

I'm curious, how were most funerals held? I mean I know they did both funeral pyres and burial mounds with their ships/belongings too. But, which was more commonly practiced, to be burned or to be buried?

Does either have any influence on what Asatraurs choose today? Personally, I think I'd rather be cremated than planted in the ground to rot.

I'd rather be planted in the ground to rot for the reason of re-submitting the matter I'm made of into the natural cycle. There's bacteria waiting to munch on me, why rob 'em of their dinner?

Big burial mounds and funerals by fire were reserved for chieftans and wealthy men amongst the viking peoples, most who died were just wrapped in linen cloth and planted in the ground, which is part of why I'd choose that myself. It seems a little logical to me as I neither am wealthy nor do I consider myself a "leader".

By far the most evidence we have amongst the Germanic Folk is for burial. Burials are easy to record though, as one has an actual gravesite to investigate, where-as it appears that immolation burials would just have a mound raised over them. You can tell an immolation burial by the charring of the earth.

There are a great many different burial traditions depending on time-frame and location which are influenced by the particular tribal cultural traditions, as well as external cultural influences.

Personally I think that one can choose either way, although I must say a traditional immolation ship burial sounds like a grand way to go, however, when one considers that to pay someone to build a ship of that size and nature, you're talking in the Millions of Dollars area.
