1. Introduction

Beneath the bustling city of London, beneath the very feet of thousands upon millions of people how walk by daily; beneath it all, there lies a hidden civilization. Below is what it is referred to by the few who know of its existence. Erected long before London was even a part of Europe, Below is home to some of the strangest beings ever seen. Freaks, as people from Above call them, they dwell in seclusion and artificial lightings, perfectly content with their ways of life. They have never bothered the ones from Above, and as of yet, the latter have not bothered the ones Below.

But, as is with all things in this world, such equilibrium was not to last. Eventually, a group of elite scientists and analysts, the Organization, heard of Below and wanted to bring up these marvels of nature to their labs. Several expeditions were made to the strange world beneath before someone finally returned successful; they had found a direct route into the city's heart. More and more humans flowed underground and dredged up the beasts they found there, transporting them to labs to be dissected and experimented on. Some people were against these activities and tried to protest the actions, journeying down to try and seek a remedy to this problem. To say the least, Below was not pleased.

Thus a war has started. Between those who live and have lived in Below for centuries, and those of Above, who dare to trespass upon their years of peace, with whom will you side?

- Organized planner
- Good listener
- Mild tempered
- Protective and loyal
Weaknesses:
- Impatient
- Kind of lazy
- Has random periods of dark moods
- Dislikes blood and gore
Personality:
He’s not quite a warm and fuzzy person, but neither is he visibly cold and anti-social. Drake just doesn’t have the patience to talk with people since he always feels the other isn’t getting his point fast enough. Therefore, conversations with him don’t last very long. That and if things don’t work to his speed, he gets annoyed and people mistake that for anger. In all actuality, he doesn’t anger easily; a bit irritated now and then yes, but not actually enraged in any way. Besides, he doesn’t have the energy to get more than a little aggravated as he’s rather lazy most of the time. He makes friends and enemies at about the same rate and he treats them almost the same so it’s hard to tell if you’re on his good side or not. Never fear though, he has his ways of showing he cares; awkward as they may be, the boy doesn’t know any other tactics so bear with him.
History:
Ever since he was born, Drake has been strongly influenced by his parents’ opposition against the Organization. Naturally, he would grow up continuing their beliefs even after they were long gone. His mother was first to go; when he was about ten, his mother was hit by a train coming home from work and that was the end of her. Five years after that, Drake’s father joined a group heading for Below and his son never heard from him again. At 15 he was more than capable of taking care of himself and was soon settled into his own apartment, getting on in life just fine. Since, he’s worked on finding a way in going to Below, both to prevent the Organization from spreading its power down there and in hopes of finding his father alive.

Against the Organization

Below

He was part of an expedition down there a few months ago, helping to stabilize things Below. And, he wants to see if his father is still there, alive..

A large assortment of guns he carries in a pack.

None

Name:
Quetzaltal Morena
Age:
16
Species:
- Halcion – (an underwater type of bird)
A Halcion is a very rare creature indeed. Looking much like a water phoenix, they spend most of their lives underwater, despite being built, and having feathers like, normal airborne birds. They're opportunists who will quickly and gladly seize any careless sailor who happens to pass their way. Needless to say, they're certainly feared... Whether it's because nobody knows they exist, or they're ignoring the birds out of fear, Halcyons have a quick and foul temper. They nurse grudges for an age and a day, and never forget an insult. As a result they’re very bitter, and they let that hate fester inside of them. Halcions are trapped in a vicious cycle- people fear them because they’re ferocious, and they're ferocious because people fear them.
- Arabic Phoenix – (a mythical desert bird)
An Arabic Phoenix is the traditional phoenix. It spends its life hidden in the deserts of the Middle East, far away from any other living creature. At the end of its life, about 500 years, it gathers the sweetest smelling herbs and spices together and creates a nest on top of a palm tree. There it sings a glorious 5-note melody to Ra, the sun god, begging for new life, and in response he sets the nest alight. The phoenix burns to death and, three days later, a fresh young phoenix emerges. Its first task is to gather the ashes of its parent bird and carry them to the temple at Heliopolis. Once done, it flies away to spend the next 500 years of its life alone in the desert. It's a unique individual- one of a kind. Its talents are highly praised, but it is so shy and untrusting of everyone it shies away from any form of attention, preferring to be alone. The phoenix yearns for companionship, but it knows it will never find anyone like itself. Thusly the bird is trapped in its endless cycle of death and rebirth, for those who are immortal can never have feelings for those who are mortal.
- Quetzalcoatl – (a mythical winged serpent from Aztec times)
In Aztec myth, Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, was the being who created mankind. He adored his creations and lived with them on earth, helping them everyway he could. However, soon man turned to him for every little thing, no matter how trivial, and he began to despair at how his children were so dependent on him. Realizing that as long as he remained mankind would never be independent; he built a great bonfire and threw himself upon it. His heart burst from his chest and shot into the sky, where it became the Morning Star, forever looking down at his children and giving them guidance. He was an extremely loving and generous being, and would have done anything and everything to help someone. Kindness is a virtue to those descendants of his, and even those who hate them will show love back to. His children will do everything in their power to stop people suffering- even making the ultimate sacrifice for them as their father once did.
Gender:
Female
Orientation:
Straight
Strong Points:
- Caring
- Generous
- Loyal
- Tries to see the good in everything
Weaknesses:
- Distrustful
- Dislikes too much company
- Fears the dark
- Despairs easily
- Holds grudges
Personality:
(Her personality is something of a combination of the birds she’s a mix of. See each bird’s description for her personality.)
History:
Her mother was a descendant of the Quetzalcoatl and her father had both Phoenix and Halcion blood in him. Thus, their daughter was a mix of all three mythical creatures. Quetzaltal was born and grew up Below a few years after the first humans began invading their world. Therefore, she was an only child as it was difficult enough surviving without having to worry about taking care of multiple children. She grew up in the dark and has learned that in the shadows lurk many hidden dangers that would not normally be around. Now, she won’t go near anyplace that isn’t lit by some sort of light, even if it’s only a dim one. Quetzaltal doesn’t know much about Above since she’s spent her entire life Below, only that people, normal people, walked the Earth there and wanted to take her and her family to cut open on tables. So far, her mother has managed to survive captivity, but her father has been gone for about a decade now.
Current Status:
Below
Abilities:
- Can survive under extreme heat or underwater
- Shape-shifting into any one of her ancestors’ forms
- Uses her songs to manipulate others
Weapons:
Nothing like swords or such, her voice and the abilities she gets when she shape-shifts are enough.
Other:
She doesn’t die as easily as some of her fellows because of the mix of immortal and mortal blood in her.
Appearance:
Quetzaltal Morena
Halcion Form
Phoenix Form
Quetzalcoatl Form

X{Drake}X

It was strange really, how a person's thoughts could be so organized yet, when it came to housekeeping, he could be so messy. Such was the case of Drake Clark's apartment these days. The boy was a practical thinker and in-depth planner, but maintaining a neat room? That was an impossible task for him. But then again, he was a youth, living on his own, with no one to tell him to pick up after himself. So naturally, his flat would eventually succumb to the landslide of junk that seemed to accumulate with every passing day. Not that it would really matter in a few short hours; he probably wouldn't live to see the place again.

'Always a pleasant thought that...'

He shoved the last of his things into a backpack and, heaving the bag over his shoulder, stepped into the hallway. Locking the door, Drake double-checked that his guns were still in their straps before descending to ground level. His parents had told him once that to get to Below, one simply had to descend into the subways of London and work their way down from there. Thankfully, he lived only a few blocks away from the nearest station so it wouldn’t take long to reach his destination.

As usual, the platform was crowded with people, all milling around, waiting to get to somewhere. Unlike them, his desired stop could not be reached by the trains alone and so, after pretending like he was waiting to board, Drake slipped away from the rest of the mob. There were several sets of stairs that led further down into the hold of the subway and even more steps heading even further than that. Without another backward glance at the last rays of sunlight, he descended into the darkness, into Below finally.

X{Quetzaltal

Her mother had forbidden her to go anywhere near the opening to Above, but she just couldn’t keep away for some reason. The dark eyed, slender girl stood in front of the winding, stone stairs, gazing up at the large hole high over her head that led to another world. Her eyes narrowed as she tried to get a better look, to see if anyone was coming down. There usually were; some humans were clad in white garments and carried bulky bags while others dressed like her people did and were less burdened with baggage. The previous always left with one or two of the ‘freaks’ from Below and Quetzaltal had learned from childhood to avoid them at all costs. The latter however, were often kind and willing to help, but one never knew. Ever since her father was dragged away like some animal, the bird-girl never went near those who came down from Above.

The lights were starting to dim in the sky, meaning that night was close approaching and with it, darkness. A shudder ran through her at the thought of being caught once more in utter blackness. She turned away and as she did, bright, blue and black feathers began to sprout from her arms and legs. And as she walked, they began to cover the rest of her body as well. Her arms elongated and turned into wings, her legs folded, molding into wiry yet sturdy bird legs with black claws at the ends, and her head shifted to that of a fowl’s. A long tail trailed after her as she continued moving forwards and form the top of her skull sprung a crown of fine, cobalt feathers. Yellow eyes gleaming, the Halcion gave a high-pitched trill before taking to the air in a flurry of blue. It was time to head home and wait out the shadows.
