Do any of you have a favorite game/movie/show/anime/book/etc. that is based on or includes Norse Mythology? Personally, I've been addicted to Age of Mythology and the Titans expansion since it came out (over 5 years ago, lol) I still play semi-regularly with friends. 3nodding It actually borders on educational. The Black & White games are also pretty fun. Anything that gives divine powers and a temporary god complex is just good fun. xp I love strategy games in general though, comes with having an INTJ personality.
Playstation and Xbox have a few neat Viking/Norse games too. Too Human, Viking: Battle for Asgard, The Valkyrie Profile games, etc. There's a surprisingly large amount of norse-themes in games/movies/tv series.
So, how about you guys? Care to share your favorite whatevers? heart (Apologies if this it too off-topic, but I thought it kept with theme enough to ask. Not everything has be serious, right?)

Most modern media and litterature on the vikings, the gods and the way of the norse/teutonic people presents a distorted, inaccurate and often offensive version of things. Vikings often depicted as mindless brutes who view women as "lesser" beings and rape and pillage anything in sight. The inaccuracies and outright bullshit in a lot of these things "is" offensive, not just to the gods but to the peoples and their decendants (like moi). However, if there was any game that was "accurate" then I'm sure the responce of the gods would be a "cool" sort of one.

Yeah, I can understand that. I'm Swedish on my dad's side and a mix of Germaniac mutt on my mom's side (Swedish, German, Prussian, Swiss). I'm American though, so I'm sure it's a little different for you since you're affected nationality-wise too and may take it a little more personal than I do?
I can't think of anything offhand that I've seen/read/played that I've been offended by, other than nazi/supremacy bs that tries to link itself with the faith. rolleyes Those people are always fun to talk to/play with/read about.
As far as the popular stereotypes of vikings in media goes though, it's just kind of granted you're going to come across it. Unless the [insert media-type here] was completely idiotic or meaning to be insulting, I don't think I'd dismiss an otherwise fun/neat whatever just because it features falsies about how vikings really were.
Age of Mythology for example has quotes from the Eddas, accurate historical information, and information on the gods/goddesses themselves built into the game. But, at the same time they also have the winged helmets (which I must admit, I love them. xd I know the vikings never had such things, but I still enjoy the art), etc. I'm not offended in any way by it though just because it's not completely accurate in depicting them. It remains one of my favorite games to date.
I mean really, in fairness Norse mythology is hardly the only one to have liberties taken with it and warped into something it's not. Doesn't mean we should take it so seriously as to be offended by something that wasn't intended to be. If you were constantly bombarded with the false images/information I'd understand, but most games I've come across aren't that intense on driving home the "vikings are muscle-bound hairy he-men that slaughter and pillage everything they come across" bs.
I guess shorthand, I just enjoy seeing Norse mythology worked into games, shows, etc. You come to expect everything isn't going to be perfect, but most I've come across are enjoyable. 3nodding heart

Heilsan,
Whilst I think that having our ancestral traditions and gods and goddesses in the mass media, games and the like is a good thing, the major problem I have is that for the most part they are mis-interpreted or mis-represented. I think if I remember correctly, in one of the Final Fantasy games, Odin is an adversary and referred to as a Demon. If you know the original definition of demon, then that's fine and well, and an accurate statement, however, the modern understanding of the term demon brings with it a much different association in the modern worldview. Likewise, the representation of Wagnerian era, operatic style outfits annoys me, as it's very easy to produce a historically accurate representation which can look just as good.
Ultimately, I think that games makers simply cater to the lowest common denominator, and rather than think through things and do some proper research, for the most part, they just go with what they think will be popular, and that's as far as it goes.
Ver thu heil
