I think at this point I can't keep asking you all specific questions, because it's not helping me much.

What I think I really need is for someone just to tell me what to do. sad

Go to a general practitioner doctor with a typed out list explaining your symptoms. Ask if there's anything wrong with you.

Thank you, Alex.

Can I ask some questions of you, now?

Here they are:

1. Just to make sure I'm clear on what you are saying, you are suggesting I go see a regular doctor that would do physicals, check-up appointments, and so forth, correct?
2. How do I find one in my area? I'm currently away at school, my regular doctor is back home, and is a pediatrician (I haven't switched over yet).
3. How much does that cost without insurance?
4. If it costs too much without insurance, I'll need to talk to my parents about this first. I know I already asked this, but does anyone have any advice as to how I could go about doing this?
5. Would it be better just to use my normal pediatrician, or try to find someone in my area that I can see at any time?
6. Should I tell the doctor what I think I might have, or should I just list my symptoms?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand. What does "ethics/law violations" have to do with psychiatrists? Do you mean you know which ones have commited violations, and should be avoided...?
Yes. I'll give you an example: A psychiatrist was seen kissing and holding hands with a young female patient in public, exchanging cards and non business-related phone calls. The woman later adopted her patient. This is NOT a psychiatrist you want to see. (That's actually the oddest of the ethics violations I came across, but it's a good example).

That scared me. Quite a bit. gonk

I don't like therapists.....

No one has responded for awhile. Does this mean that I should stop asking questions?

I apologize if I have been annoying or whiney.

It probably just means people are either not online or like me and can't really give advice.

One can never ask too many questions.

Civet Moon,

I have no background in psychology, I'm just a parent. But I think it would be important to at least *talk* with your parents about what you think is going on with you. I can't really give you advice but I'll try to list some information regarding what is routine for seeing your doctor.

It sounds like you've been reading about Asperger's Web MD - Asperger's It's important not to self-diagnose, but if you see that you have particular symptoms you can tell your doctor about your concerns so you can discuss them.

You may want to start by seeing your pediatrician or a nearby physician. Are you on an HMO in the US? If you need to find a physician near you at college instead, you might be able to look up a list of physician's via your health carrier's web site or by calling them. Your primary care physician can check to be sure there isn't anything physical that could be causing your symptoms, whatever they are.

Your primary care physician can refer you to see a psychologist, psychiatrist or other specialist. Once again, check with your health insurance carrier to see if you have mental health coverage.

Receiving a diagnosis is not instantaneous. It may take many visits and tests before you actually receive some answers. Have patience and hang in there!
Here is a link to some tests that are done to determine Asperger's: Palo Alto Med -tests for Asperger's

That's usually the first step. They do referrals, too.

2. How do I find one in my area? I'm currently away at school, my regular doctor is back home, and is a pediatrician (I haven't switched over yet).

Check your phone book for clinics in your area.

Civet Moon
3. How much does that cost without insurance?

Call up the clinics and ask. Ask if they have a "sliding scale." That means that their price varies depending on how much money you earn.

Civet Moon
4. If it costs too much without insurance, I'll need to talk to my parents about this first. I know I already asked this, but does anyone have any advice as to how I could go about doing this?

It probably won't be easy. But if it has to happen, it has to happen. There's no sense in delaying it. Maybe write them a letter?

Civet Moon
5. Would it be better just to use my normal pediatrician, or try to find someone in my area that I can see at any time?

It's up to you and the price of it, really. This first doctor visit will most likely just be for a check up and a referral, so you don't have to go through the agony of choosing a specialist yet!

Civet Moon
6. Should I tell the doctor what I think I might have, or should I just list my symptoms?

It's up to you. I suggest just telling the symptoms. But I don't really practice what I preach! It was a mistake to tell my doctor what I thought I had, so I'm just hoping you don't make the same mistake. But it's up to you, really.
