Red... [em] Cotton. I think cotton should usually be the fabric of choice--cheap, natural and soft. Then again, there's the drawback of having to iron it. sweatdrop

Mask of Master Red... [em] Cotton. I think cotton should usually be the fabric of choice--cheap, natural and soft. Then again, there's the drawback of having to iron it. sweatdrop Everything looks a bit better when you iron it (unless you physically can't). Most loli outfits would do well with a bit of ironing, regardless of the fabric. It just looks more proper and presentable that way, in my opinion. ninja

In agreement with the others here, cotton is wonderful. Watch out for shiny material, I made that mistake once. Luckily it turned out nice, but not a loli dress. xp

Poplin would be wonderful for many lolita outfits. It's sturdier than cotton and can look more tailored.
When it comes down to it, it's the design that decides what fabric you need. Nothing else. If you're using a pattern, it will suggest fabrics. If you are using a tailored design but use a soft fabric, you won't end up with the outcome you were expecting. Cotton is usually a good all-around fabric to go with if you're unsure, and you can always tell the fabric store ladies what you want your skirt to look and feel like, and they can point you in the right direction. (Watch out at Walmart... many workers have no idea how to do anything more crafty than cut the fabric.)

If you wer going for a long dress like the victorian era or Mana's from Malice Mizer, I would go for silk. Maybe shantung silk.
For a summer dress I would o for the lightweight cotton.
For petticoats I would go for tulle or iridescent organza. Netting is really annoying.
If you were to make a summer jacket I wouldn't really go for just plain cotton. To me looks pretty ugly.
Hope this helps!
