The sun had fallen and risen on two days before the territory grew familiar to the white and black speckled wolf. The excitment of seeing the pack again was near overwhelming but she kept herself in check as Kovu trotted alongside her. She couldn't help but note the apprehension etched across the mahogany wolfs features. His whole body spoke what he was feeling and Tat could do nothing more than fruitlessly try to calm him.

From the day she mentioned her return and iviting him he seemed slightly on edge, as if he was expecting to be attacked. Sighing, Tat could only guess it was due to his life as a loner. She just hoped that he would relaz after meeting her father and the others. She promised him that no one would attack him and she meant to keep that promise, but she doubted she would need to. Hige and Loki were very welcoming to all newcomers and Thayne was just as open.

Soon, the scent of her father began to loom closer and Tat smiled, ony pausing for a few seconds to give Kovu and encouraging lick on the cheek before looping towards the boundaries and happily passing into the Seaside packs territory.

Hige was just finishing off the remains of a winter rabbit. For a wolf his size it was really hardly more than a snack, but it wouldn't be long till the deer began their trek south. Once they did the pack would eat well again.

It had been a few days, a week, maybe more, since Hige left the freelands. Now as the enourmous alpha lay content in a bed of firey leaves his nose began to twitch. Past the scent of his kill, and the lingering scent of their packmates, there was the scent of his daughter. Tatti was back just as promised, to take the position of female beta alongside Thayne.

Not a moment too soon either, Hige had to help Yero chase off some arrogant male or other, and he was not liking the idea of the same thing happening to Tatti. Raising his head the brown licked his muzzle clean and gave a welcoming howl, then quickly hopped to his paws. He'd leave the carcass of his kill to the crows to pick over.

Making his way out of the thicker part of the forest, he trotted easily in the direction of the female and her-- ....

"Er..."

Kovu moved silently into the pack's territory, his movements becoming more and more awkward as the seconds passed by. What was he supposed to DO around this guy, anyways? The mahogany wolf couldn't even REMEMBER the last time he slashed his pride for an alpha. It was simply never his style.

...BUT, sacrifices had to be made in order to gain a 'greater' prize.

Kovu drooped his head in a silent show of resignment, and trotted on forward. The suspense could've killed him, if he were that type. With much hesitance, and even with a small squeak in his voice, he reluctantly peered in Tat's direction: "I've never felt...scared like this before. What will he think of me? I mean, my appearance and everything. It would REALLY suck to get kicked out of this land before I even exchange a word with the guy just because he thinks of me as nothing more than a 'loner' based on looks alone."

Tat glanced over at Kovu as his movements and body stature increasingly decayed as they moved further into the forest. The ever lingering scent of salt was drifitng in the air. The ocean was a place that Tatt had greatly missed. Romping in the sands was always a joy, and a workout.

"Scared? Now I would never have thought I'd hear you speak those words." She teased. "My father isn't one to judge on appearance. He took me in when I was a mere scrawny pup near the brink of death. I highly think he'd judge you for your scruffy look. Besides, I think that's one of your more attractive points." She grinned and lowered her head next to his.

The last hting she wanted was for him to feel intimidated but it seemed pack-life would be abit of adjusting for him. "If my father believes that you have no place in the pack then I will join you in the Freelands." She licked his cheek. "But there's really no reason to be afraid."

The sound of her father's voice caused Tat's head to snap up. She paused momentarily to register what direction the welcome had originated before throwing back her head and howling back. "He knows we're here." She smiled. "He must be near the den. Come on." She grinned before picking up speed and dashing through the woods. Golden and ruby leaves of all hues wipped past her as she moved through the brush, glancing back only to make sure that Kovu wasn't far behind.

.... "friend".

He emerged out of the shadows of the trees, tail and head held upright high. Amazing how long it took him to get used to such body language.

There they were, not even four yards away, and already Hige's mood dropped a degree. If Kovu had come here looking even the slightest bit arrogant then Hige's mood would've been totally shot, but it was the loner's nervousness, perhaps, that salvaged Hige's spirits.

~Oh brother...~ He thought, already mentally worn out. He wished nothing more right then than to have Yero, or Loki or Devvyl, or Thayne, or Akamu, ANYONE there with him now. He knew that he was in a biased position, and he knew that he was going to have to put that bias aside.

"Tatti..." He started off warmly, sending her a small smile, more of an affectionate gesture than a tired one. "Welcome home..."

As the alpha's mid-tenor vocals faded off his eyes roamed to land on Kovu. Never one to judge based on apperances he was surprised to find an uneasy feeling. Well... he shouldn't assume they were more than just friends without even knowing the male. He also couldn't fairly chase him off even if they were. Kovu didn't seem to have done a thing wrong, so what was with this uneasy aprehension?

Suddenly, something clicked! The conversation he'd had with Tatti the day he left the freelands, she'd said she had something to take care of before coming home! Was this it?

"Hello to you as well, stranger. Welcome to our pack. Your name?"

It was the best that he could do! Hige was easy going any other time, but he just couldn't get himself to relax right then. If any of the others showed up it would be a Godsent blessing.

Throughout the entirety of Hige's little train of thought his expression remained neutral, all until he opened his jaws to speak, and even then he didn't suggest any aggression towards the other. He was tense, however, and it perhaps did give hint in his eyes that it was Kovu's presence. Of course, Hige didn't have anything to fear from many wolves, given his size, and he'd already prooven that he was more than capable of fending for himself. No, this was a father's uncertainty. Go parenthood.

((and go rambly posts! XD;;; redface ))

Tat smiled and quickly hurried to her father, sinkingg her head into the fur under his head, something she was commonly doing in greeting and affection anymore. "I told you I'd be back soon." She smiled gently before her eyes caught sight of her father's wearyness and his gaze on Kovu. Brows furrowed she turned back to Kovu and move close to his side before looking up at her father.

She would not intervene in whatever was going to happen unless Kovu was to be harmed. To be truthful, she wasn't sure how her father would react to her and Kovu being together, but sh ehadn't even told him yet and already he was taking on a protective nature.

She looked and Kovu and nudged him gently in reassurance and to let him know she would not leave his side.

Kovu cleared his throat, his dark eyes defiantly locked on the alpha who stood so firmly before him. Now wasn't the time to be a pushover, no, not in the face of this guy. For all the male knew, this encounter could determine the course of the rest of his life.

...might as well act natural.

The mahoghany hued wolf didn't even take the time to bow to his superior, instead finding it within him to lower his tail slightly, just above his legs. He didn't owe anything to this wolf, so why act like it?

"My name's Kovu." He answered, all his previous insecurities vanishing in mid-air as he spoke. "Your land is beautiful; it's a pleasure to be here...

"and for that matter, so is your daug-"

Kovu stopped mid-sentence, his eyes widening slightly. He peered back to Tat in a silent plea for help. OHHHH CRAP.

Was he supposed to even know yet?

Hige's fur lost it's bristle a bit. With an inaudible exhale he allowed himself to relax some.

"..." Hige's expression shifted almost comically. If you could see the way his eyes gradually widened, and his maw fall open, only to snap shut again quickly. He knew that if he overreacted then Tatti would never let it go. His gaze quickly shifted again to restrained irritation. "Nice to meet you. Kovu." He said just a bit forced.

Poor Hige, he just really didn't know how to cope with the sudden dose of grump! He had nothing against Kovu personally, just the fact that this rougish fellow obviously held a place in Tatti's mind that was just a little too friendly for Hige's little brain. He'd get over it soon enough if given time, but the daddy-reflex wouldn't relent just yet.

"Will you be staying with us then?"

Tat looked at Kovu with a smile, nearly ready to chuckle at the small slip up, but at this point in time, it really didn't matter. She stepped up to Kouv's side and rubbed her head against his neck affectionatly to help calm him before resting her rear end upon the leaf-littered ground.

She looke dup to her father with those artic hued orbs. She could tell her father wasn't all too...thrilled, with the idea of Kovu, but she particularly didn't care. She was gown and could certainly take care of herself. She had fallen for Kovu and there was nothing her father could really do about the whole situation. Should he try to split them up, Tat would certainly leave the pack, but she highly doubted her father would resot to something such as that.

Well, that was easy enough. He knew without him having to say anything!

...well, he didn't say a WHOLE lot, anyways. But the message had gotten across, and that was that.

"Yes, I think I shall." Kovu replied, and figuring there was really nothing more her father could do, triumphantly licked Tat on the cheek. All was well.

But even so, Kovu was curious to know what was going on inside Hige's brain. Let's see...his daughter decides to come home out of the blue, and along with her comes some random mut of a wolf? What a shock. The way the alpha acted, however, was so...

typical of a father, in a sense, but still remarkably calm. Seemed like nothing could shake this guy's composure.

This realization brought about a sudden respect in Kovu for the fatherly alpha. Perhaps without even realizing what he was doing, the brute drew his tail between his legs and lowered his body to the ground; the thick fur protecting his neck brushing against the forest floor as he fell into the deepest of bows.

"...thank you..."

With those first moments of initial akwardness out of the way, finally Hige did feel everything build to a certain point in his mind, only to be expelled by a sigh. He knew that eventually Tatti was going to find someone that she cared about, he just.... really didn't expect it to be so...... SOON. He could still remember when she was that shy little respectful pup tucked down in the snow, exactly like Kovu was now on the autumn littered floor.

So they had another to add to their ranks.... Hige smirked a little morbidly at that. There was some silver lining to be found in all this. Tatti was obviously happy, and another member in the pack was always welcomed, since their lot did have very good judge of character.

Yes.... He could live with that. Kovu seemed to have a good head on his shoulders, he doubted there'd be many problems, if any.

He ducked his head a bit in answer, not really having words. "You're welcome" didn't feel significant enough to work, Hige didn't really do inscincere, especially not for the sake of formality.

"I'll let you two rest. I'm sure it was a long trip back." He commented, already moving forward to place a fatherly wash to the top of Tatiana's head and give a whip of his tail through the air in an official greeting to Kovu. Before turning to leave, the alpha hesitated to look over his shoulder. He hadn't given Kovu his name yet. He shouldn't forget something that important. "The name is Hige, by the way. Tat, you'll fill him in on the rest of the pack?"

Tati enjoyed the attention from Kovu and was thoroughly glad that his energy had peeked up again after the slight hesitation he had experience moments before. She had been somewhat surprised by Kovu's submission though. She had never seen him do such a thing before, and a well of pride swelled within her. She knew, at this point, that she had certainly chose a wonderful wolf.

Her tail moved across the littered floor as her father gave her his affections. Yes, thing certainly couldn't have turned out any better, and Tat was happy with the events.

She looked to her father as he turned to speak to them before laving. A soft smile spread across her maw. "Of course daddy. Oh! Um, well, if you need Kovu and me, you can find us near the lake in that old den by the shore." She looked over at Kovu and grinned.

Hige, hm? Kovu doubted he'd ever forget the name. A faint smile came to his face as he watched the alpha prepare to leave, accompanied by a curious sense of warmth that began to spread throughout his body. For once in his life, and perhaps forever more, he had a home.

A real pack, and a real honest to goodness home.

Tat's words snapped him out of his mild daydream. Did she just say...den? As in his and her own little corner of the universe to do whatever they wanted yes? Kovu's brows raised without thought.

...nifty.

"Er...yeah. Sounds good okay let's go!" Kovu nudged Tatti gently, urging her to show the way. It was clear he was highly anxious to explore this new territory, the den being first on his list.
