If Makaio's mother had told him once, she had told him a thousand times; there was nothing all that good about the court. She had never even set hoof in the forest, convinced of the ways of the Herla who thought themselves better than everyone else. It was a mockery of Herla civilization, and she had been less angry at him for his romp in the Dead City then when he stole off to the court. He had come back a few times after his Guardian came around, lingering in the Deep Forest and occasionally slipping into the Glen. He didn't make his visits often, though. He had no reason to frequent it ... until now.
He hadn't been back since the opening of the stockings. It'd been such a grand little event, and he was pleasantly surprised when one of the little creatures bought him a stocking full of caps...and wouldn't leave. A friend. Friends were always nice. He left the creature behind this time, letting it get used to his home. Now he was daring, however uncertainly, to come back once again. He nodded to a few of the Herla he recognized from the hunt they'd had for the stockings, his body a bit stiff and awkward. Looking at how out of place the buck looked - and felt - it was a little difficult to try to pin-point why on earth he would come to a place that made him so uneasy. But he knew the reason he was there; he just had to find her.

It had been one of those days that Charlotte absolutely hated that her mother was the High Queen. Not that she had a problem with her mother, not in the slightest, but the fact that she was the only child of the reigning High Queen, along with being one of her best defenders, meant that she did have to deal with court business from time to time. She hated it. She hated all the posturing and flattery of the courtiers, every calculated smile and weighted comment they flung around like so many leaves. Give her the rush of hooves and the clash of antlers any day, rather than the quiet battles of graciousness here. She shook her head, attempting to rid herself of the feeling of eyes on her, but it didn't work. 'A walk,' she thought, turning herself towards the edge of the forest, 'an escape would do me good.'
As she cleared the first line of trees, a flash of orange-gold caught her eye. A familiar arched tail was visible past a nearby bush, and she changed her course to meet with it and its owner. "Fancy meeting you here," she called as she neared Makaio. "I think this is only the third time I've seen you this close to the glen. What brings you around, Makaio?" She bumped her shoulder companionably against his, though not too hard, for she worried that she'd upset his balance by pushing too hard. This was the perfect distraction from her horrid day.

Ah. There she was. Makaio was only briefly surprised at the fact that Charlotte had found him so easily, given who she was. He was quietly impressed when she called out to him (and maybe a little disappointed in himself; he hadn't even heard her coming). He started to bow his head to her as he was certain was customary in the court, but when she nudged him with the familiarity of an old friend, he dropped the pretense - and his awkward mannerisms - completely. No; not everything about the court was so bad.
"You, actually," he responded, adding a shoulder-bump of his own to his reply. What reason did he have to lie? His new companion, the strange little rodent...thing, was good enough company, but he was finding that nothing quite beat the companionship of another of his kind. "I just thought I'd come to say hi. That's all."
