my path isn't so much a path as a meandering trailblazing that occasionally intersects with paths.
the open circle i attend rituals with generally have: North - Earth South - Fire East - Air West - Water
but on my altar i have: North - Air/yellow South - Earth/green East - Water/blue West - Fire/red spirit/purple
what is the significance of having a specific element associated with a specific direction?

I've wondered where these associations come from. I've always made a connection with the prevailing winds and what they bring. That can change depending on where you live, but in most places in the contentintal US, south winds bring warm weather while north winds bring snow, east winds stir up storms and change things up, while west winds tend to clear the skies and bring in some mild air.

The directions might have come over from Europe. There was the ocean to the west and the equator to the south. I am not sure what the deciding factor would have been to make air and earth where they are, except for the fact that they were possibly put to opposite their counter.

ah ok. that might make some sense. for me water is east, because when i think of east i think of new england and lobsters. fire is west because west makes me think desert and hot, and it's the opposite of water. south is earth because south makes me think oranges and jungles, lush and fertile. north is air because of the artic winds.
