See what I mean. biggrin

"raibh" is a word that shows up alot and I will get to the bottom of this!

I'm just trying to get a handle on things with literal translations. English and Irish syntax are different and if I could learn to shuffle the english around I might be able to figure more meanings out. The whole verb before the subject thing makes my brain hurt...

...but every little bit helps!

Oh wait... you nailed it! "raibh" is a Present Subjunctive of bí.

Go raibh mé. may I be
Go raibh tú may you be
Go raibh sibh I hope that we are

Tá mé ag foghlaim! I am learning

Go raibh míle maith agat!

Ack! My french is interferring with pronouncing Irish words! For example: Duit in French would sound more like (d-wheat) instead of (ditt). I am so confused!!

I know how you feel. I'm hoping that if I spend enough time in this guild I'll be able to over right my thought process so that thinking in Gaelic will be just as easy as thinking in English and French will just be a back up language.

Actualy in hello, you will find "Dia duit." (Dia gwit) that word changes in sound during sentence structure. But try a "G" sound (Like in "Gah") with the mouth open, but make a "D" sound... That should help for "Dia duit.".

well that's good for helping with pronunciation. However I don't think he was asking for clarification on pronunciation so much as voicing his difficulty with switching his habits.

I think what he meant is, because he learned french, when he sees Dia Duit...his brain wants it to be pronounced in French rather than Irish so he's having a hard time switching gears so that he remembers to use the Irish Gaelic pronunciation.

Is it possible to say,

"Níl mo cuimhne" as opposed to "Níl fhios agam"?

Would this be more like "I don't recall" instead of "I don't know"?

I have a feeling like "mo" should be dropped from what my searches have revealed.
