Cross stepped up to the edge of the canyon, young, restless, and ready to investigate anything and everything. The overhang a steep jut in contrast to the rough slope just to the varg's left. He looked down into the abyss, and twitched faintly. It had an empty, longing feeling that grabbed at his heart and tempted in vain to drag him into the darkness along side it. The young varg shivered and stepped back from the aching dark, turning to the trees once more. He walked, calmly and comfortably into the trees that easily dwarfed the cub who found comfort among its branches and boughs. The thick patches of bramble and carpet of leaves were familiar friends to him. Cross shook off the feeling of the canyon and settled back into his own. An owl hooted sharply from some overhead pine, calling to its young as the flying puntar left for the hunt, gliding past the white tailed wolf and disappearing into the depths of the trees beyond. This place was never lonely as the canyon is shadowed, full of comfort and warmth to those used to traversing its shade. Presently there was a chill in the air, but the edge to the cold was gone along with the snows and the violent storms of the wintertime.
Leaves rustled overhead and the dappled light cast warmer air and spots of sun onto the earth before the cub, and he delighted momentarily in its warmth. He wondered where his brother went, the only slightly smaller wolf caped in black and white and boasting the vibrant green eyes they both shared. "Mishap," The small varg called loudly, splitting the silence with the sudden outcry. A otherwise occupied squirrel turned to study the puntar before fleeing into the heights of the trees.

"Trees, trees, nothing but trees." The sikla despaired aloud, striding through the tall conifers. "Its always the same here. How am I supposed to find anything to eat but squirrels and berries." Fraoch frowned and quickened his pace. The midday light barely breached the growth and Fraoch missed the full feel of the sunlight and the fields. Herds of deer fleeing before his Dragga's might. He could none less miss their jibes and poking fun at him. Nor the impossibility of ever finding a mate.
Aside from the ramblings of his mind Fraoch remained vaugely alert to the world around him, avoiding trees barely and halfheartedly jumping logs. When he heard someone call he was popped out of his digression, and turned to the right to listen for the voice again. As if in compliance, he heard some wolf calling to another. Gathering himself Fraoch made his way to the source, a rather large pup who stood with his back to the Sikla.
"Whose that you're looking for?" He deigned to interrupt.

His voice drifted into silence, absorbed by the wind and trees. He paused, listened for a moment, and called again. "MISHAP!" The pup barked annoyedly. Where had his brother gotten off to? The pup whirled around instantly at the sound of another voice, looking about wairly until he spotted Fraoch, approaching. The Sikla was taller than him, but Cross judged that he could defend against the larger varg if the need arose. He wagged his tail expectantly nonetheless. "What is it to you?" He replied, not at all disrespectful, but a simple inquiry as to why. Cross watched the thin brown wolf carefully, seeing as he still posed a threat. It had been a while since Cross had seen paw or tail of another wolf besides Mishap, and the pup was yet still unsure how to react. The varg he now faced may even be part of a pack who could easily drive the pair out of the forest, or kill them for that matter.

Fraoch licked his maw boredly. "Just wondering why you were yelling, mostly. You'll wake all the prey here." He wrinkled his lip unhappily. Lips pulled back and he lay his ears protectively against his his head, letting his tail droop out of habit and instinctive wariness. The forest seemed to sway in response to the pup, or moreover Fraoch overreacting to nothing again. Sikla as he was, he'd sure as hell be a gamma if it wasn't for that. Fraoch twitched a bit at the teasing he always received. He wondered why he went up to the pup if he knew full well he was going to have a panic attack.
The day was warm, the wind was cool, and Fraoch's fearful heart wept like a butterfly standing before a pup who was barely smaller than he. It was a good thing he wasn't afraid of groups. Just when he and another were alone and he could be assassinated in an instant.

Cross stared at Fraoch, sensing the other wolf's fear. He snicked a bit, then openly laughed at the older varg. It dismissed any and all wariness he'd had about Fraoch. Making the encounter rather funny. "Afraid of the big, bad wolf?" He grinned a bit at Fraoch, who twitched a little at the words. "Oh come off it. Its not like I would kill you needlessly, firstly. Secondly I'm much, much smaller than you at the moment. Surely you could take care of yourself if I decided to jump you." Cross walked over to Fraoch and sat in front of the scared varg, wagging his tail habitually.

"W-well I suppose. " Fraoch frowned immensely, scuffling a bit in the dirt. He wasn't about the give the pup more reason to tease him, so he bit his tongue and didn't voice his fears. "My name is Fraoch." He said, scooting back a bit as the pup sat before him. Former of a pack somewhere far to the east. "Who're you, if I may inquire." He asked, beginning to warm up to the large fluff-ball of a pup. He heard some rustling in the bushes behind him and laid his ears back protectively.
"Did you hear that." He whispered shakily, feeling chills run up his spine.

Standing in the shadows Nari, watching and waiting in near absolute stillness, stared intently forward. She was watching Fraoch and Cross, judging their intentions as best she could from where she stood in the undergrowth. The day was warm, and there was little suspicious things any varg would do in broad daylight, but she was wary from past experiences. The two were talking, and the large pup seemed to be laughing at the thin, light pawed varg it spoke to. She began to go forward to confront them, and started to announce her presence when she stepped and a twig snapped loudly beneath her paw.
She heard the voices drop to a whisper and froze.

Fraoch's whisper was initially overlooked, but then Cross heard it too. He directed his ears to where he thought the sound was from, became still, and listened. He could hear Fraoch's heart pulse wildly, but the Sikla took not a breath as he turned and tuned in as well. "Lets get out of here." The Sikla said warily, shivering a bit.
"No, wait." Cross strained to listen further, until he heard it. The undergrowth crunching slowly. "Whose there!?" He called.

"Don't antagonize them." Fraoch whined despairingly, not even sure if Cross heard anything or not. "They could be after us to kill us." His tail fell and curled, ears pressed against his back. The wind picked up for a moment, sending another shiver across Fraoch. He took a step back and watched the suspect bushes intently, ready to bolt and, if need be, leave the pup behind. He was having one of those signature 'I'm too young to die' moments.
