Week 11
The Forecast explains the importance of the World Cup break and offers its Week 11 picks.

Jun 4, 2010
By Kyle McCarthy

SEATTLE – MLS handed its clubs a unique opportunity when it scheduled a two-week break during the World Cup.

Every MLS team will have the chance to pause during the middle of the campaign and alter their present course. There will be time to get healthy and time to tinker. There will be room to change and room to grow. There will be hope discovered and hope revived.

Few clubs around the league need the fortnight off more than Seattle. After entering the year with lofty expectations, Sounders FC has stumbled out of the gate. While the performances have occasionally provided glimpses of why Seattle entered the season as one of the favorites to lift MLS Cup, the results have yet to meet or exceed those expectations.

The break grants Seattle the chance to get back on track. Osvaldo Alonso will have two weeks to recover from his lingering quadriceps injury and reclaim his influential place in the engine room. Blaise N'Kufo will have two weeks to play for Switzerland in the World Cup before linking up with Seattle in July to provide his new club with the target man it desperately needs. Freddie Ljungberg will have two weeks to rest his legs without scything challenges tearing him down. And those three players don't even comprise a complete list of Sounders who might benefit from the interlude.

Will the break revive Seattle? Only time will tell. One thing is for certain: Sounders FC will likely benefit from the rare opportunity to take a break in the middle of a disappointing campaign and attempt to fix its problems.

Last week: 2/7 (29%)
For the season: 28/65 (43%)

Saturday

Kansas City @ Toronto FC – 4:00p.m. (CBC)
– Goal.com Preview

The impending World Cup break comes at a poor time for a TFC side finally starting to discover its identity. Preki has his Reds composed and organized at the back with Nana Attakora and Adrian Cann providing stability in central defense. The progress doesn't stop there. Julian de Guzman is finally starting to find his form in central midfield, while Dwayne De Rosario will enter the World Cup break as the leading contender for MVP based upon his influence in TFC's resurgence. After snagging an impressive 3-1 victory at San Jose last Saturday and resting the majority of the starting XI in the meaningless midweek match against Vancouver in the Canadian Championship, TFC should cap off its fine run by dispatching the out-of-form Wizards (sans the suspended Davy Arnaud). The question most TFC fans will take into the break: is this finally the year the Reds make their playoff bow?

Prediction: Toronto FC win.

Real Salt Lake @ D.C. United – 7:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

These two sides toiled through a reserve-laden test run in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match on Wednesday. United won that match 2-1 in extra time, though that particular contest shouldn't have much bearing on this one aside from the corresponding confidence boost for the home side. D.C. has made winning a surprising habit over the past week after dispatching Chivas USA last Saturday, so RSL will have to exercise some caution and keep a watchful eye on the precocious Andy Najar to limit United's suddenly productive attack. Injuries to Kyle Beckerman (foot) and Andy Williams (hamstring) will reduce Jason Kreis' options in midfield, but the MLS Cup holders can muddle through by relying on their depth if Jean Alexandre can submit a composed performance in Beckerman's holding midfield role. If those nominal reserves continue to rise to the occasion, RSL may just celebrate its White House visit with a victory.

Prediction: Real Salt Lake win.

Chivas USA @ New York – 7:30p.m. (Fox Soccer Channel)
– Goal.com Preview

The outcome of this match could depend on how the Red-and-White reacts to the rumors surrounding captain Sacha Kljestan and his potential move to Anderlecht. With news filtering out about Kljestan's mooted departure on Thursday, the whispers could serve as a distraction for a side already missing the suspended Zach Thornton. Dan Kennedy should start in Thornton's place after recovering from a hamstring strain. Chivas USA's struggles on the road won't be helped by those rumors, Thornton's absence and the momentum gained by the Red Bulls after a last gasp 2-1 win over Houston on Wednesday night snapped their four-game losing streak. All things considered, it should be a fairly easy night for New York if the Red Bulls can secure an early goal and disrupt Chivas USA's rhythm in possession.

Prediction: New York win.

Houston @ Los Angeles – 8:00p.m. (Galavision)
– Goal.com Preview

This rematch of last year's Western Conference final pits two teams heading in opposite directions. Houston fell to a second consecutive loss at New York on Wednesday to finally break its win one, lose one streak in disappointing fashion. The Dynamo hasn't quite found its stride this season with its uncharacteristic leakiness at the back a primary factor in its stumbles. As Columbus can attest after the Galaxy's smash and grab victory at Crew Stadium last weekend, Los Angeles exposes defensive breakdowns ruthlessly on the counterattack. Throw in the Dynamo's midweek cross-country trek from New Jersey and the Galaxy should notch yet another victory to cap off a record-setting start to the season.

Prediction: Los Angeles win.

Philadelphia @ Chicago – 8:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

The Union travels to Toyota Park in search of the first two-match winning streak in franchise history. In order to accomplish that goal, Philly will have to follow up last week's shocking victory in Houston with a somewhat less surprising win over a Fire side that often struggles at home. Chicago's indifferent home form does not, however, offer Philadelphia a solution for limiting Brian McBride's influence in the air or tracking the Fire's midfield runners. Can the Union pose enough danger in the attacking third to emerge with a second consecutive result? It may prove a bridge too far even with the Fire back four considerably below its impervious best in recent weeks.

Prediction: Chicago win.

San Jose @ FC Dallas – 8:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

After several weeks of fine defensive performances, the Earthquakes' back four has looked rickety in its past two outings. The quality of the opposition (Toronto FC and Columbus) may explain why San Jose shipped five goals in 180 minutes, but the Earthquake needs their defensive core to return to form at Pizza Hut Park. Chris Wondolowski's late equalizer to secure a 2-2 home draw with Columbus on Wednesday should boost the visitors as they emerge from the difficult pair of matches. San Jose will need its confidence to cope with the threat in possession posed by the home side, though FCD will miss Dax McCarty (hip pointer) if he isn't available. Despite all of its fine work on the ball, FCD struggles to apply the finishing touch in front of goal. It could lead, as it has on six other occasions this season, to yet another draw for FCD.

Prediction: Draw.

Columbus @ Colorado – 9:00p.m.
– Goal.com Preview

The circumstances do not favor the Crew. After throwing away two leads in Wednesday's 2-2 draw at San Jose, Columbus faces a second game in four days. To compound the issue, the Crew must play the second match at altitude against a rugged Colorado side. Those difficulties aren't enough preclude a positive result if the Crew can sustain the momentum generated over the past two matches. Robert Warzycha's side has perked up creatively and boasts enough depth to freshen up the starting XI appropriately to cope with the congestion. Those advantages, however, may not be enough to overcome the circumstances here.

Prediction: Colorado win.

New England @ Seattle – 10:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

The focus shifts to Revolution third-string goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth ahead of this contest after Preston Burpo fractured his right leg in last Saturday's 3-2 victory over New York. With Matt Reis still unavailable despite coming off the Disabled List earlier this week, Shuttleworth will make his first MLS start in perhaps the league's toughest road venue and will need to overcome any corresponding nerves early in order to solidify the Revs' defense. Shuttleworth should have some additional help in that quest with Cory Gibbs set to return to the lineup and Emmanuel Osei another possible addition after he returned to the training field this week. Expect Seattle to press forward to test Shuttleworth early and often in an attempt to overcome its suspect home form. As with most Sounders FC games this season, the final result will likely come down to whether Seattle can convert its chances.

Prediction: Seattle win.

Week 13
The Forecast recaps the World Cup break news before delving into its Week 13 selections.

Jun 25, 2010
By Kyle McCarthy

While American soccer fans focus on South Africa ahead of Saturday's round of 16 clash between the United States and Ghana, MLS will return to its fixture list with considerably less scrutiny.

The American top flight spent the past two weeks in hibernation during World Cup group play. In order to fill the time between friendlies, training sessions and World Cup watch parties, MLS clubs and players did their best to make news in a cycle dominated by news from South Africa.

As play resumes and before the Forecast unveils this week's picks, here is a quick primer on some of the major headlines generated during the interlude:

Kansas City tables bid for Gudjohnsen: Kansas City has offered a Designated Player contract to former Barcelona, Chelsea and Monaco forward Eidur Gudjohnsen, Wizards president Robb Heineman revealed on Thursday night. Gudjohnsen, 31, is out-of-contract after finishing out the remainder of his deal with Monaco by spending a healthy dose of time on the pine at Tottenham Hotspur. The London club still figures to register as favorites in the chase with its impending participation in the Champions League qualifiers, but Kansas City's proactive move once again reveals the ambitious nature and the financial backing of the Wizards ownership as it attempts to build a winning side.

D.C. inks Boskovic to DP deal: D.C. United signed Montenegro captain Branko Boskovic from Rapid Vienna on June 14. Boskovic, 29, arrived on a free transfer from Austria after previously spending time with Paris Saint-Germain and Red Star Belgrade. The veteran Montenegrin should inject some much needed creativity into the United midfield, though a healthy dose of skepticism about his projected impact is probably warranted given D.C.'s spotty record in the international transfer market in recent seasons.

Kljestan signs for Anderlecht: Chivas USA captain Sacha Kljestan joined Belgian champions Anderlecht for an undisclosed fee on June 10. Kljestan's contract expired at the end of the campaign, but the 24-year-old will join Anderlecht in time for preseason training after his new club forked over the required transfer money to facilitate an immediate move. The Red-and-White will have to ponder how to revamp a tactical system designed to elicit the best out of Kljestan, but the move will free up some salary budget room to allow them to bolster the roster in other areas. Venezuelan international striker Giancarlo Maldonado and former midfield general Paulo Nagamura are currently training with Chivas USA and could represent a pair of viable options to help spend that money.

San Jose acquires Cronin after losing Luiz: Andre Luiz will miss the remainder of the campaign after the Earthquakes placed him on the season-ending injury list on Wednesday. The former Brazilian international midfielder is scheduled to have surgery on his left knee to repair damaged knee ligaments. Luiz's absence will hamper San Jose's efforts in midfield as the Earthquakes have struggled in their previous efforts to replace the calmness and the cadence he provides in the center of the park.

In a related move to help fill the void left by the injury prone Luiz, San Jose obtained Sam Cronin from Toronto FC in exchange for an undisclosed amount of allocation money. Cronin didn't kick people frequently enough to fit into Preki's new world order, but he should fit in nicely in the Bay Area if given the chance to play in central midfield consistently.

New England places Twellman on season-ending injury list: Revolution striker Taylor Twellman will miss a second consecutive season after suffering a recurrence of symptoms related to a head injury sustained in August 2008. Twellman had returned to training with the Revs in a non-contact role until suffering a setback in mid-May. With Twellman ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, New England will likely attempt to sign another striker to bolster its ranks.

Players Union unveils 2010 salary list: The MLS Players Union released its customary list of player salaries last week. Los Angeles midfielder David Beckham tops the charts with a base salary of $5.5 million, while Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan is second with $2.05 million in base compensation after signing a new deal earlier this year. For the season: 33/73 (45%)

Friday

San Jose @ Real Salt Lake – 9:00p.m. – Goal.com Preview

The champs should extend their home unbeaten streak to 17 matches against the Luiz-less Quakes.

Prediction: Real Salt Lake win.

Saturday

D.C. United @ Columbus – 7:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

United will rue its luck after the World Cup break halted its mini-revival and the schedule sent them to Ohio to face the rested Crew upon their return to the field.

Prediction: Columbus win.

Los Angeles @ Toronto FC – 7:30p.m. (Fox Soccer Channel) – Goal.com Preview

Neither team really likes to set the pace, so the onus is on the Reds to push forward and ward off any Galaxy counterattacks with their typically robust approach.

Prediction: Draw.

New York @ Kansas City – 8:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

The injury-ravaged Red Bulls need to get healthy before they can contemplate winning tricky road fixtures.

Prediction: Kansas City win.

Colorado @ Houston – 8:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

The Dynamo probably spent most of the break working through its defensive issues, but Colorado has a way of squeezing the life out of these sorts of matches.

Prediction: Draw.

FC Dallas @ Chivas USA – 10:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

It will take the Red-and-White some time to adjust to life without Kljestan, but they may have to ramp up the offense immediately with the Hoops in town.

Prediction: Draw.

Sunday

Seattle @ Philadelphia – 5:00p.m. (ESPN2) – Goal.com Preview

Nate Jaqua may finally return for Sounders FC to provide another option up front, but the Union will expect to open PPL Park properly with a home victory.

Prediction: Philadelphia win.

Chicago @ New England – 7:00p.m. – Goal.com Preview

With Matt Reis likely to make his season debut and add some stability between the sticks, the Revs will look to grab the initiative and eventually exploit the Fire's tendency to concede late goals.

Prediction:
New England win.

Week 14
The Forecast discusses the annual June-July purge before unveiling its Week 14 selections.

Jul 2, 2010
By Kyle McCarthy

Repentance sweeps through MLS as June turns to July.

It isn't necessarily by choice. It is somewhat by design. It is almost always beckoned by failure.

Clubs around MLS engaged in their ritual purging of the overpaid and the underwhelming this week as they prepared for the contract guarantee deadline (July 1, as a general rule) and the summer transfer window. The humbling exercise essentially forces clubs into a hasty mea culpa, one designed to rectify errors from the past winter just in time to perhaps repeat them under different circumstances six months later.

This edition of the enforced mass migration took on an international flavor due in large part to boardroom wranglings this winter. While the previous CBA ensured the busy transaction wire made no distinction between the domestic and the foreign discards, the guarantee provisions in new pact protected many MLS veterans and paved the way for a healthier dose of recent imports to find their way home with a little American cash and a lot of contractual freedom.

Prominent signings from the winter earned their place on the bread line primarily through poor performances. Salvadoran internationals Christian Castillo (D.C. United) and Julio Martinez (Chicago) departed after indicating the glory days of Cienfuegos and Diaz Arce won't return soon. Sergio Herrera (Columbus) played one minute and prompted more questions about the accuracy of his listed salary number than about his dearth of playing time. Other signings like Pablo Escobar (Kansas City) and recent loan arrival Jose Macotelo (Chivas USA) barely registered a blip on the radar, though Escobar wrought havoc on the Wizards defense more than once during his stint in blue.

Former midseason signings and other holdovers aren't immune to the cull either. Ramon Sanchez (San Jose) joined the list of Salvadorans heading back to Central America after he flattered to deceive once his honeymoon period concluded. Maicon Santos (Chivas USA) will continue his nomadic and injury-plagued existence elsewhere. Andrew Weber (San Jose) fell prey to the goalkeeping numbers in the Bay Area.

Outgoing traffic may dominate the headlines as clubs clear salary budget and roster room for the magical acquisitions to come, but a couple of clubs have made moves recently prior to the window. Kansas City acquired Shavar Thomas for a second time to cure the Jamaican international of the splinters he collected in Philadelphia and give Jimmy Conrad a dependable sidekick for the first time in years. D.C. United once again jumped off the map to acquire Pablo Hernandez, a young Argentine forward hoping to avoid the hex plaguing most United signings these days.

All of the moves lay the groundwork for July 15, the biggest of big days in the MLS summer marketplace. For one month, MLS clubs will try to replace the holes created by their disappointing winter signings or other general roster deficiencies with fresh talent. As the frequency of these departures and the continuous talent search suggests, talent recruitment – particularly at this pay grade – remains a frustratingly imperfect science.

Clubs will continue to scour the globe for reinforcements regardless. Atonement, after all, is only one or two players away.

Last week: 4/8 (50%)
For the season: 37/81 (46%)

Friday

New England @ Real Salt Lake – 10:00p.m. – Goal.com Preview

It won't end 6-0 to the home side this time around, but RSL's defense is too stingy to let the impotent Revs escape with a point.

Prediction: Real Salt Lake win.

Saturday

Chicago @ Columbus – 8:00p.m. (Fox Soccer Channel) – Goal.com Preview

Watch the wingers in this match. The match could hinge on which pair of flank players finds the most joy.

Prediction: Columbus win.

Kansas City @ FC Dallas – 8:30p.m. – Goal.com Preview

Between the dismal second-half performance last weekend and the dismissal-inducing showing submitted at Pizza Hut Park last season, Kansas City probably shouldn't like its chances in this particular encounter.

Prediction: FC Dallas win.

D.C. United @ San Jose – 10:00p.m.
– Goal.com Preview

The third time won't likely count as the charm as United continues its road swing at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Prediction: San Jose win.

Philadelphia @ Chivas USA – 10:30p.m. (Fox Soccer Channel)
– Goal.com Preview

Classic letdown scenario for a young team: emotional home win last weekend, cross-country trip this weekend. Can the Red-and-White take advantage?

Prediction:
Chivas USA win.

Sunday

New York @ Colorado – 9:00p.m.
– Goal.com Preview

Remember that yawn inducing nil-nil affair between Los Angeles and Toronto FC last weekend? There's a decent chance this one could surpass it.

Prediction:
Draw.

Seattle @ Los Angeles – 10:30p.m. (ESPN2)
– Goal.com Preview

In an ideal world, Landon Donovan spends his first match back from the World Cup watching this game from a suite somewhere. In a world where ESPN picks up the match because he's playing, Donovan will have to play some part – off the bench, one can hope – as he continues his rigorous world tour.

Prediction: Los Angeles win.
