Groups tend to define themselves according to who they are and who they are not.

Everyone wants to be unique, but the fact of the matter is almost no one is and ever has been. 98% of the population is a "knock off" of someone/thing else. There are very few of us who can't say we've never saw someone supporting some killer attire/gadget that we just had to have. If you can/do, you're either a lair or one of the very limited 2%. When you see some sporting the same shirt walking down the street, what do you think? -poser? or someone you'd like to chill with? We're a society of judges and look-a-likes, period. Its always going to be like this.

Scene kids are attempting to portray the indie scene, whats the indie scene portraying? Scene kids aren't unique and neither are we. The indie "look" came from someone too. Eventually, the scene kids will steal our "style" and the indies will find a different look they've "ripped off" someone else to call their "own".

Obviously, these percentages are of my own estimation. If you'd like to research the actual percent, go for it. You should publish a study on this, actually. That'd be worth looking into.

its actually quite easy to be unique these days. as long as you're not easily influenced by what the mainstream tells you is "cool". almost every kid in this town will where whatever hot topic decides is the new trend.

How so?

he's one of the top musicians in the genre and have influenced other great musicians like plug in stereo, chase coy, stephen jerzak

I don't see how he could be that influential considering how he's only been around for about a year. And besides, none of the artists you mentioned are particularly prolific. I'd hardly consider them to be representative of the indie music scene.

well most ppl into that type acoustic know those bands and he's been around more than a year. at least since '05

I suppose I can't argue with you there. I don't really care for Never Shout Never, so by proxy I don't really listen to the musicians that he is associated with. But from what I've read, he's been around since 2007, but didn't start releasing CDs until 2008. So that's two years.

Anyways, I feel like the person who had the most influence on the modern indie singer-songwriter label would be this guy.

Oh, I love that guy!
