NEW YORK (AP)—Major League Soccer will take a two-week break during the group phase of the World Cup for the first time next summer.
MLS announced Wednesday that it will not play any games from June 11-25. The league also does not plan to schedule games on the days of the World Cup semifinal and final.
“The league has changed; the country has changed,” MLS president Mark Abbott said. “There’s a large and growing fan base for professional soccer.”
The length of the MLS season will not change. Each team will probably play an additional midweek game to make up for the missed time
