The fur on the dark Varg's stomach rippled as the pang struck again. Dusk tightened his scowl as the rumble of his abdomen echoed. This hunger hurt is so irritating. Usually the pain would dull after a few meatless hours if his hunts went unsuccessful... and they usually did. The male curled his tail around his paws as he sat, bearing the ache with a soft snarl.
The earth was soggy and cold. Bits of grass could just barely peek out from under the ice. It was a hopeful sign, but the Kerl was certain the snow would fall again and conceal the green. The winter seemed so endless, particularly in these miserable conditions. Dusk clamped his jaw in anger, growling faintly to express it.
Without a warning, Dusk came across a sound he was unable to distinguish. His head snapped in its direction, all of his senses actively investigating the source. Could it be... potential prey?

Deirdre yawned widely as she woke from her nap. Lazily, she uncurled, scratching her neck with a hind foot as another yawn racked her body. She stretched when it was over before standing to shake off the snow that had fallen and covered her lightly during her rest. Her half-closed eyes regarded the landscape warily before she gave a contented snort, as it seemed no Varg was close by. Her expression, which remained the same even in sleep, was that of irritated boredom, with furrowed brows and a deep-set frown. Her dark sclera and white irises didn’t help to make her look any more friendly or approachable. But, luckily for her, that was just how she preferred it.
With another stretch, she leapt lightly off of the large rock she had used as a bed, taking note of the soft blades of grass that poked through the snow. True, it had been sunnier lately, but she doubted it would last long, for the winter was often long and merciless, and its cold tendrils spread far, even to the dens of Man and their red flowers, and killed many.
But today was not the day for such thoughts, for she was hungry, and her sleep only made the pangs of it sharper. Despite her need, however, her trot over the snow-dusted land was languid and lazy, as if it didn’t matter much to her whether her hunts today would prove successful or not, or as if she had all the time in the world, and was not bound to the time and deaths of mortal Varg. But, in reality, those thoughts did not flicker, even for a moment, in her mind. Her pace had always been that way for the most part, for the feel of wind against her fur or the sight of the ground receding beneath her paws did not appeal as much to her as it did to other Varg, especially in the temperatures of winter. She preferred to be, as some had said, slow and steady. But that didn’t mean she was watchful of her surroundings, as was evident by the sudden crack under her paw, and she lifted it to inspect the now broken stick she had trodden upon.

Dusk gracefully rose to his paws, refusing to tear his gold eyes away from the sound. His brindle fur prickled, and his claws dug into the mud as he prepared himself for a feast. The thought caused his stomach to ache, and thick saliva to dribble from his maw. The Varg picked up the scent that finally wafted his way. He realized it was another Varg, a female, but the fact didn't relieve his tension. A frustrated growl escaped his throat, alerting the stranger of his presence.
The hunger pain dulled and Dusk felt bold enough to approach the intruder. He discovered a wolf with a coat so dark that it made his own seem considerably lighter in comparison. Dusk found her eyes to be her most striking feature. Once he caught her gaze, he just stared blankly like a dumb pup despite the aggressive significance the act might display.

Deirdre’s ears pivoted suddenly towards the growl, and she looked up in the direction it came from, the split stick tossed aside and forgotten. Eyes brightening slightly with mild curiosity but the frown never leaving her face, she padded towards it, alert. It wasn’t in her best interest to be attacked and wounded, or worse, killed. But she thought it wouldn’t hurt to take a quick look and, who knew? It might lead her to a kill.
But she was soon disappointed, for the Varg that came into view seemed to be having the same amount of luck (food-wise) as her, if not worse, if his protruding ribs and saliva-coated lips were anything to tell by. She flattened her ears at the male’s stare, but did nothing more, for she was used to the attention her eyes brought, and occasionally the little band of feathers and leaves about her neck, too, and she saw no reason to start a fight over something like that. Quickly, however, she grew bored, and turned away to continue her search.

The black eyes snapped out of view, and Dusk realized the female had turned away. The Varg was offended, curling his lips and leaping in her direction. "Hey!" Dusk's raspy voice crackled as he called to her. "What is wrong with your eyes? They look ..." He paused, taking a moment to find the most fitting adjective. "Ugly." The word seemed just a little overused, but he'd always failed to discover a better one. His vocabulary certainly was not the most developed, after all.
The male padded through the snow to catch up to Deirdre. He gazed at her through the corner of his eye, scanning for another flaw to point out. "So is that thing on your neck. And you smell bad, too. You smell like dead." He spewed insults like a geyser, with a scowl on his lips all the while. It didn't take long for him to remember the pang in his abdomen, and the scowl transformed into a cringe

Deirdre glanced lazily at the Varg that had decided to tail her, before leaning down and sniffing at a clump of snow. Her ears twitched this way and that, but there were no Lera close by, as far as she could tell. She moved on, but paused when she heard the insults flung her way. For the first time in a while, she smiled, although it was crooked, and her brows were still furrowed. She gave a harsh laugh, and turned to him, sitting at an angle with her tail twitching occasionally, scattering the loose snow. The smile still on her face, she leaned closer to him, ears pressed forward.
“Perhaps. But I would much rather be what I am now than you,” she said pointedly. “Your eyes look like a stream poisoned for many winters by Man and your coat looks as if it would make even the most inanimate of objects cry in horror.” She raised a paw and flopped it in his direction in a “shooing” motion before turning her head away, as if she herself couldn’t bear to look at his hideous figure.

Dusk's scowl instantly returned, and it took too much effort to comprehend the advanced insults the female just flung at him. He laid his ears flat, taking a step back and curling his lips over his glistening yellowish fangs. "W-well... your coat is..." He squirmed as he desperately scrambled to come up with a better comeback. Dusk flushed, his efforts ending up in failure, and the awkwardly long pause just making it more embarrassing. "Ugly!"
The Varg pricked his ears up and puffed out his chest to make himself look more intimidating. He had to make up in appearances what he just lost in his pathetic comeback. He tried to tower over Deirdre, glaring into her eyes and preparing for the worst.

Deirdre didn't do much to hide her snickering, but she looked back at him, a brow raised. Rank didn't matter much to her, as it had been a long time since she had been in a pack. She didn't think her instincts to submit to those higher in rank, and to dominate those lower in rank would ever leave her, but they had been dulled after numerous encounters with what she considered horrible leaders and too many lower-ranking Varg to deal with. As a result, size didn't matter much. It was usually a bluff, anyway.
However, she still held into consideration the challenge issued by looking directly into a Varg's eyes. "Oh? I guess that'd be a compliment, coming from you." she said as she gazed back steadily, but did not move from her position.

Dusk frowned, trying to digest the comeback in his mind. He quickly snapped to a conclusion, and curled his lips again. That didn't make much sense... She was just trying to confuse him! Throw him off.. or something! Well, he wasn't going to let it slide.
"No, no, no." He shook his head. "You are ugliest, and smelliest, end of story. Now start crying, or cowering, or SOMETHING." The varg snarled, carefully maintaining his tall and fluffy position. "Or... I'll slit your throat."

At the male’s latest threat, Deirdre burst into uncontrollable laughter. It may have seemed demeaning, but to Deirdre, it was only amusement of the highest degree. She even slapped her tail on the ground a few times, forcing the dust to lift and float before settling down, so insuppressible it was. Only when she was out of breath could she calm, and she looked up at the male, her body shaking at random intervals, as if she could burst out laughing again at any moment.
“Tell me, what name do you go by?” she asked, an amused smile painted across her maw. It had been a while since she had had such a good laugh, and she was interested in the Varg who caused such mirth in her.

Dusk drooped from his dominant position as he quickly realized the female had seen past his bluff. The scowl on his face vanished, and became a somewhat vulnerable frown. The edges of his lips twitched, and he couldn't feel too bad about himself because whether her liked it or not... that laughter was infectious.
"Dusk." He answered, sounding more sad than threatening. The varg paused... and cursed under his breath as his brows lowered into a scowl again. She threw him off with his laughter... and now she knows his name! I'm such a failure!

Deirdre nodded, accepting the name. She continued to brush off his dirty looks, and replied with her own name, "Deirdre," before gazing closely at the male. Previously, she had merely glanced at him for a rubuke, but now he had her interest, and she thought that, at the very least, she could take a better look at him. But he didn't seem too different from the description she had said, for his eyes were indeed dark golden in color, and his pelt was a dusty sort of brown and black.
"What are you doing here?" she asked curiously, but didn't expect an answer in response. Regardless, she was sure she could guess the reason: hunting. He looked as if he hadn't had a proper meal for a while.

The dark Varg finally gave up, figuring thinking about stuff got him no where with this female. He huffed, plopping his rear on the dirt, making no attempt to hide his displeasure. "Deirdre." He repeated for no apparent reason. That was going to be a difficult name to remember. Eh, not like it matters anyway! He pushed the thoughts to the side as she asked a question.
"None of your business. Honestly.'' His brow furrowed, the rest of his face forming into more of a pout than a glare. After a short pause, he decided to answer her anyway. "I WAS hunting. Until your ugly tail showed up, that is." Dusk snorted, turning his nose away disrespectfully. "Probably scared away some good game, too."

Deirdre flicked an ear towards the male at the repetition of her name, confirming it. “Don’t say it too often, or you’ll wear it out,” she reprimanded jokingly. And with that went the last of her good-natured self from her previous mirth. Not out of any new hatred or dislike for the male, but because it was so strange for her to smile of such a long period of time. As of late, her lips had rarely lifted from the frown they usually wore, as if kept that way by an unknown force.
But even if her smile was gone, her feelings weren’t. It was refreshing to have something to be so amused at after such a long time, and she decided to show how much she appreciated him making a fool of himself by offering to help him hunt. Of course, whether he accepted or denied the offer was completely his choice, and should he choose the latter, she wouldn’t bother to argue.
“Of course,” she commented dryly, eying the thin snow about them and noting the emptiness of it. “They always said two eyes were better than one,” she said, and although it seemed utterly random, it did imply that perhaps she was suggesting two Varg hunting together would be more favorable than the two hunting alone. But then, recalling slow the other seemed, she decided to just outright ask him, a bit irked that his stupidity made it required, “Would you like to hunt with me?”
