Zuko:
So he'd agreed.
He'd Caved. He'd....no.
He could tolerate them...yes. That was the word.
This didn't mean Liked them. Or cared.
No such things were weakness.
He was the teacher. Each of them was a student.
There would be Honor, Discipline, and Respect.
He would teach them as his uncle taught him.
But there would be no attachment.
Zuko didn't believe in any form of love.
He was there teacher....and...and that was all.

Iskra hadn't believed her ears when she had heard him say it. That amazing fire herla. That he would teacher, well and her brother, but he, Zuko, would teach them how to use fire. To control it. It was truly the one thing in the world she wanted. And now she was waiting for him, her teacher, at the clearing where he had first shown her fire bending. This would be a day she would never forget.

Hiisi was not ready for this.
But he wasn't sure he would ever be ready, and he needed to learn before the window closed. He couldn't let his fire get away from him again. He had hurt Iskra's friend, and next time he didn't know what would happen. And so he had followed Iskra to the clearing, though he lurked on the fringe of the space, head down, flame barely a glimmer as he waited for their teacher. He knew nothing about this stranger herla, except that he understood fire. And he was afraid.
Of what he could do, of what Zuko might do, of his own capabilities...of disaster.

In the clearing Zuko stood facing the two of them. Not one for standing on ceremony, he began.
"Fire, as you both know now, is hard to control."
"If you are not in control fire or any other element you are linked to, it will control you."
"It will cause fear and keep you from living as a Herla should."
The misunderstanding about powers such as fire is that it is merely a tool. It is not."
"It is connected to our very being, and our emotions."
"Including sadness, anger, joy, love....and Fear."
Looking directly at the young male he said, "Today, we focus on two things..."
"One. Discovering that link."
"Two Overcoming That fear."
First, finding the link.
"What I want you to do, is lay down one on either side of me."
"Then close your eyes. And breathe deep and think of fire, The smell, the heat, the power of it, even the things you fear about it, put these things out there in your mind and your fire will answer, you will feel the pull of it from within, that is your link."
Settling himself first Zuko snuffed out all fire on himdelf then closed his eyes and breathed deep. The outside world fell away.
In his minds eye he could see the flames roaring and vast and warm he felt the call of them in his core. It was him and it could not hurt him, It was his protector and Ally. Holding on to that feeling he opened his eyes.
To the outside observer his eyes held a soft glow and he was giving off tremendous heat.
Looking at them, he said "Once you make this link today you will always be able to reach your fire. It will be your constant companion a never ending bond."
"It is this day, a rite of passage very important for herla like us." he finished.

Iskra nodded, hanging on to every word Zuko said and committing it to memory. Carefully she took a place next to him, enjoying the mass of heat he was giving off. It was like her own mother’s and it calmed her greatly. With a deep sigh, Iskra closed her eyes. Yes, that’s why she wanted to learn how to use her fire. To be like her mother. To be strong and powerful and kind and warm. She mentally envisioned her mother, not the physical form, but the warmth that she remembered- the feel of the heat, the smell of the smoke.
Her breathing began to level out, all the excitement she previously had felt started to melt away. And just for that moment Iskra only felt the flickering of flames inside her chest.

Hiisi listened as Zuko spoke, but his gaze was elsewhere, downcast and awkward. He did not want this, he did not want to hurt anyone. And he was so afraid that he would. Zuko, Iskra...himself. He didn't know. He couldn't control it. And he knew that if something went wrong, it would be his fault. But nonetheless, he moved toward Zuko, doing as the buck told him, curling his legs beneath him and closing his eyes and thinking of fire.
And it roared into his mind, all uncontrollable and terrible, vicious like his mother's temper and deadly and as uncontrollable as the wind, wild like his sisters. Everything he was not. And the little fawn started trembling, though he held it in his mind. The fire was everywhere. He was fire. And he was terrified.

Zuko: Smelling the fear on the young one he Instantly sent a calming sense of warmth toward the male. -gently nosing him he spoke- "Don't fear it. It is part of you. It won't hurt you if you don't wish it but you have to know it belongs to you not you to it." "Breathe and let go...your flames with calm with you."
He opened an eye noticing Iskra was fine. Giving her a smile, and those were rare, he was proud, she had passed the first step.

As the warmth melted away and Iskra came back to the world of the living she instantly the smell of fear coming from her brother. Worry washed over her but she stayed very still, Hiisi had to do this by himself. She could only sit there and think encouraging thoughts while she waited. Oh, but she knew he could do it.

Zuko's words brought the fawn out of his fear somewhat, breaking into Hiisi's mind over the roar of flames, and Hiisi made an effort to calm himself. The trembling stopped, and the fawn took deep breaths, slowing his breathing, slowly but surely getting himself under control. The rush of flames died down, dimming to a flicker, a little warm beacon in the darkness, and for the moment, Hiisi relaxed.
But he did not, would not, trust them.
