It was just after mid-afternoon on a partly cloudy summer day. Hermes looked up at the sky and sniffed the hot, summer air. She then looked back down and checked the four carts that stood nearby. Each one had two wheels, a deep set, wooden compartment between these wheels, and a sturdy handle that ran squarely from each of the wheels to the front, so that whoever was pulling could pull it with their teeth. Her mother had left these carts behind, and though they had proven to be quite useful, she had never explained where they had come from.
Hermes moved her head away from the carts and towards the entrance of her cave. It was near the edge of a deep forest, so close that you could just see a large grassy plain nearby. Hermes remembered playing in that field when she was small, and then bringing her children to play there as well. The entrance itself was little more than a small hill with an opening, hidden by bushes and low branches, so that it was difficult to see unless you knew what you were looking for. Hermes had lived in this cave for her entire life, and now it was where her family stayed as well.
"Nax, Kari, Naz! Are ready to go?"Nazrio eagerly bounded out of the cave, thrilled at the prospect of getting to help his mother on her trip. Though he and Kari were fully grown now, this was the first time Mama had allowed him and Kari to come along with her.
"Coming Mama!"

Little Karimah ran out from inside the cave to the entrance where the carts were lined up. She pounced on her brother, biting his white ear. "Take that!" She growled with a smile as she sat on his back.Naxos chuckled as his daughter had began to play fight with her brother. "Now, now. Be nice Karimah." He smiled as he trotted over to his mate's side. He gave her a soft lick on her cheek, smiling. "Where will we be off today, my love?" He purred softly as he looked over at the carts.

"Unf!" cried Nazrio as his sister landed on his back. "I'll get you!"
Nazrio tried to roll over so that he could knock Karimah off of his back, while he whacked her side solidly with his tail.
Hermes rubbed her head briefly against her beloved mate's neck as she watched her two children playing. Outward displays of affection had never been something that had come naturally to her, but after meeting Naxos it had become easier.
"We will be going on my longest gathering route, which goes to the top of one of the mountains. It usually takes me a few days to finish this one, as I always end up having to come back a few times to empty my cart. Though with all of us, we should be back by about this time tomorrow."
She looked back at Kari and Naz who were still busy play fighting, "Alright you two, settle down and listen up."

Karimah was knocked off by her brother as he rolled over. "OW!" She cried as she was smacked by his tail. She bit down on Nazrio's tail hard before she heard her mother tell them to settle down. "We're going on a trip? How fun!" She said with a swish of her tail.
Naxos smiled as he nuzzled his love. "Shouldn't be any problems with our gathering. Hopefully there won't be any wishes to steal our goods." He spoke as he pawed at his daughter. "Be nice to your brother..." He said sternly.

"YOW!" Nazrio winced when Karimah bit down on his tail. "Kari you bite to much...."
He straightened up to a sitting position at the sound of his mother's voice, eager to hear what she was going to say. He had always been a bit of a Mama's boy.
"The mountains? I've always wanted to go there! It's so high up..." He stroked his tail as he said this, imagining the mountains.
Hermes smiled her subtle smile with a bit of a hum. "I am more worried about Naz and Kari behaving than I am of thieves. All four of us should deter them at any rate," she whispered to her mate.
"Alright," she turned to her children, "we will be going to collect mochi offerings from other wishes. I expect you to be polite to the wishes we meet but also, we cannot allow anyone to steal things from the carts, so keep your eyes on them. Most of them live in groups, but there are also a few who will be by themselves. Those are the ones you have to watch out for sometimes as they, "she coughs as if clearing her throat, "can be a tad eccentric."
She looks at Kari and Naz to make sure that they are both still listening to her, as she moved to one of the carts." We will be carrying it all in these. I have packed something for us to eat later on in this one, but along the way there will be a stream we can catch fish in, if need be. Oh, and Kari? Do not bite your brother on this trip. Are there any questions?"

Karimah giggled as she stuck out her forked tongue at Naziro. She enjoyed being a pain in the butt to her submissive brother. "It's not my fault that you are pushed around so easy-like." She remarked as she moved her gazed towards mother. "Sounds about clear as day to me. Yes mother, I will restrain myself from sinking my teeth into Nazrio's scales." She said bluntly as her tail swished after laying on her belly.
Naxos chuckled then licked Hermes' cheek lightly, "There's no need to worry too much. They'll listen." He whispered in her ear then looked over at his children. He smiled at his son then gaze almost a glare to his daughter. "It would be best to listen to your mother, Kari." He said then walked to his cart. He nodded to show that he was ready to leave when they were.

"I suppose you are right, however, I do tend to worry a little..." As she said this, Hermes had a brief, vivid, image of Nazrio jumping from a tree and plummeting to the ground as he attempted to fly. He had been determined to figure out how to do this, but he had failed at this so many times, Hermes was starting to wonder if he simply was born without the ability to fly. For a moment, she thought about giving Naz a warning about trying to fly, but she decided against it, knowing that it would be another reason for Kari to tease her brother. "But I suppose that is natural," she said with a blink as she tore herself away from her thoughts.
"Alright you then you two, get to your carts and follow us," Hermes said with a nod to Naxos as she walked over to her cart. She took the front bar in her teeth and looked expectantly at her children. Nazrio sniffed in indignation as he heard his sister insult him. "Well no one said you had to be so mean!" He remembered all the times when their play fights had ended in Kari chomping down on some part of him. He pouted for a moment, and then turned at the sound of his mother's voice.
"I understand! Let's go!" He bounded to one of the carts and copied his mother, waiting eagerly to follow his parents, as his tail wagged back and forth.

Karimah stuck her forked tongue out her her weak brother then trotted over to her cart. She grabbed hold of the bar with her teeth, swishing her tail as she waited to leave. She enjoyed being a pain in Nazrio's side since she was only trying to make him stand up for himself and be a bit more aggressive.
Naxos chuckled lightly at his children as he watched them wait to leave onto their journey. "Do you trust me, Hermes? I'll make sure they behave with my own paws." He whispered into her ear as his tongue flickered in the air. He was tasting the scent of everything around him. His tail swished as he waited for his mate to lead the way to her offerings.
