When Jack Ryder, television star, was exposed to a form of stem cell regeneration he formed the alter ego of the Creeper. Creeper is currently a member of The Outsiders, representing Batman's 'fear factor'.
Ryder's Origin
Little is known about Jack Ryder's origin. In the 1998 comic, The Creeper, it was revealed that Jack Ryder had been raised in a broken home with an absentee father and a borderline psychotic mother, who may or may not have been an alcoholic. Jack Ryder's father was also a journalist, inspiring Ryder to follow in his footsteps.
Creeper's Origin
Creeper's current origin was released in the 2006-2007 Niles volume.
Jack Ryder, host of the news commentary show, You Are WRONG, had been in the midst of an investigative report into the new form of stem cell research being conducted by Doctor Vincent Yatz. Having been optimistic and supportive of Yatz's work, Ryder felt Yatz owed him one and headed to the doctors lab for an interview. Instead he found not only a mutating test subject, but Hagop Hewsen, son of former crime lord Bolo Hewsen, and a group of henchmen assaulting Yatz. Having witnessed the murder of Yatz's two lab assistants, and the brutal assault of the doctor, Ryder was sure to be murdered.
Attempting to save his life and Yatz's, he pretended to hold the doctor at gun point and threatened to shoot him if they weren't allowed to leave. As they attempted to escape, Yatz conveyed that he couldn't risk letting Hewsen find the last sample, and chose instead to inject it into Ryder's stomach. Distracted by the pain and shock of the injection, especially after seeing what it had done to its only other test subject, Ryder and Yatz were apprehended by Hewsen. The mutated test subject became violent with the stress, forcing the group to leave as it destroyed the lab.
They left to the Hewsen estate and were taken to the edge of a cliff to get information. Yatz told them that the sample was long gone, inside of the currently ill-afflicted Jack Ryder's bloodstream. Hagop believed the doctor, but chose to shoot Ryder in the head, seeing as he was of no use to him. The gunshot killed Ryder instantly, and he was promptly dumped off of the cliff and into the ocean. However, unbeknownst to the others, the stem cells (and what was later revealed to be Joker Toxin) caused a mutation in Ryder's body, and thus, the Creeper was 'born'.
Psychology
Jack Ryder and Creeper are both entirely different personalities. Jack Ryder being the more human, if not cocky, voice of sanity, and Creeper being the more outward, violent, insane personality. In the 1998 volume, Ryder was confirmed as a depressive, whether this was due to the stress of his vigilante work, or due to the chemicals and separate, deranged personality is unknown, but more likely to be the latter.
In the original Ditko series, Jack Ryder and Creeper were the same person, and Ryder used his Creeper guise to release his inhibitions to become more wily, possibly becoming more insane, as well. Later on, in the Silver Age, his backstory was modified to include drugs having been in his system at the time of Creeper's 'birth', causing a separate personality to form and make Ryder black out whenever Creeper was brought out. In the 1998 volume, not only were Ryder and Creeper different personalities, but completely different people with highly conflicting motives and values. Jack Ryder was very reluctant about bring out Creeper, fearing him to become the more dominant personality and steal his own body away from him. Currently, as of 2010, Jack Ryder and Creeper are different people in one body, able to converse with each other in their mind. While Creeper and Jack have different ways of doing things, Creeper was created from a half-shadow of Ryder's personality, and therefore knows what Ryder actually wants and acts on it. They usually agree on what to do, but if Creeper steps out of line (at least in Ryder's view) Ryder will try to intercede, and usually he fails.
Most of the other heroes view Creeper as a reckless danger, a wild card. However, Creeper has a very strong moral compass, and almost never puts innocents in actual danger. The Creeper joined Amanda Waller's Shadow Fighters. He died in battle fighting Eclipso on the moon. His regenerative healing factor allowed him to survive. He is a current member of The Outsiders.
Powers and Abilities
-He can transform from Creeper to Jack Ryder instantaneously and vise versa
-Super human strength
-Very agile
-Regenerative Healing Factor
-His laughter can cause pain to anyone who hears it
-His eyes can produce a hypnotic state of fear
