Somehow they had lost direction. Mayhaps through misreading the sun's light through the thick treetops of the Reign's lands as they left, or perhaps through idled minds putting their paws on autopilot. Either way, both Gabrielle and her slave found themselves off the path they were meaning to travel, and though Gabrielle fumed at herself for the rookie mistake, she kept calm about it and merely asked for a small break to get water.
The femme stole away whilst he rested and found a nearby stream - a pitiful specimen that trickled and was barely as thick as her thigh; probably dried from the hot sun. But it contained enough water to reflect her scowling face from beneath the mask and hood. Was she doomed to make herself look incompetent at every turn? Nothing but obstacles had been thrusted into Gabby's path since the day she could see, and for now it seemed as though they would keep coming . . .
But that was what made a wolf strong: overcoming these obstacles without complaint. Chiding herself with a click of the tongue, she dipped her head and lapped up as much water as she needed to feel rejuvenated. They needed to find directions somehow, but who would approach a hooded stranger and a bloody-pawed and chain-legged male openly? They were supposed to be arriving with courtly grace and as sudden as lightning, not bumbling about like novices on a treasure hunt . . .

A pink tongue lolled from bloodied jaws that Cinaed had yet to lick clean. He did have the time: the bear whose prey he'd stolen wasn't exactly happy about the situation. Thus, the flame-pelted wolf came to be barreling through the wood - malicious grin on his maw, exultation in his breath. His paws pounded the earth with little regard for silence or any living creature underneath; there was even a bit of a hop in his step. In Cin's entirely immodest opinion, it was a wonderful day to be a wolf.
The opinion was soundly doubled as the male came upon one of his favorite little streams, sadly diminished from the heat of this season. Cinaed tucked into it nonetheless, sacrificing water quality for the few great gulps it took to clean the pink tint from his teeth. He felt much better without the taste of old blood on his tongue. Felt better still, having caught a gleam of light from the corner of his eye, and realizing that it belonged to another wolf. An oddly-decorated wolf, at that!
What fun he was blessed with.
"Dear me, pretty thing," Cin practically purred, stalking his way toward the foreign female not unlike he might have a rabbit. "What do we have here?"

She tensed as she scented someone approaching, and quickly at that. An attacker? Of course it was the first conclusion she leapt to - not many optimistic thoughts remained after her training and childhood in one of the darkest packs Telk was cursed to know. Not to mention she scented blood, which of course set Gabrielle's inner warning systems off.
But no. She looked up and saw a fiery male beginning to saunter - no, stalk over. The femme's initial slight surprise gave rise to a deadpan look as she surveyed him. "A traveller. If this is your land, I have no qualms leaving it. I only wanted to stop for water." Not that she got any signs of so much as a pack in these parts, but Gabby couldn't be too careful. She suspected the male had just come from a hunt from the blood he had washed off from his mouth, though why he would be running was beyond her. Odd.
Was he hunting alone? She darted quick looks from side to side and stood.

Cinaed smiled at her wariness, taking the time to size her up as well. She didn't have the look of a loner, reasonably groomed and unusually garbed. Had he found a wolf of station, perhaps? "This? No worries, my good lady: all Telk is my land." Light laughter followed Cin's words, baring teeth in a snide smile; he straightened, however. Even reckless, the flaming wolf was no fool, and personally thought this helmed female looked like she knew her way around a fight.
Following her eyes, the lazy smile on his lips dimmed. Suspicious thing, wasn't she? "Relax, I walk alone. No other beasties for miles." With this he stretched lazily, pale eyes never leaving her. Fore-facing ears indicated his complete attention. As she stood, he stopped his approach and actually sat down, thick tail falling over one paw. This seemed like far enough out of reach for a lunge, right? Yeah...just about.
"Are you lost? If you don't mind my asking. Other wolves don't pass these parts often."

His informal manner wasn't going to have her setting her cool mask down, though an invisible brow did quirk at how he called "all Telk" his land. "No beast owns these lands truly," she found herself saying. "We can stake claims, but we are not eternal. The land is its own, a mound of dirt and water that we as ants crawl upon . ." For a moment, Gabrielle experienced world weariness: how useless it all was, wanting to have more turf always, enforcing a rule that may or may not last come the next few years, how she was probably nothing more than a pawn.
Then the feelings passed. These weren't exactly new thoughts after all.
"No, we are not lost." She had debated whether to reveal that there was another wolf with her, but perhaps the knowledge that there was would be better to avoid any unnecessary contact this male might be thinking of. "Only taking a break. We are on our way to visit a pack usually and simply known as 'The Order'." She inclined her head slightly. "Have you heard of such a pack?"
