"Enh. It's alright, I guess."

I drove the car slowly--it had been known to break down without any forewarning several times before, but I was taming it--and we finally reached the park. "Say, tell me: why did you join?" I asked suddenly, remembering the 'Spanish Inquisition' I'd gotten from my first partner, John Reesen. The guy had been ten years older than myself--a veteran, teaching me the ropes, like I was supposed to do with this guy--and he'd loved asking personal questions. That was his skill--he was great in the questioning room, asking the witnesses, victims, and suspects questions and somehow receiving answers when I couldn't. My skill had been being a b***h. Apparently, that was my skill. "Was it for a personal reason or was it expected of you?"

"I've put a lot of planning into this. Given my training in practical and theoretical physics, my analytical abilities, and my skills with armed combat. It's only fitting that I take a job that lets me use all of these skills. Law enforcement and investigation was the perfect field for me." Jack explained.

"I see." I tapped on the steering wheel impatiently while we slowly (da*n you, traffic!) drove to the park. "Jesus, it'd be faster if we walked," I muttered to myself. "So," I said loudly, "do you like the job? Or are you just doing it because it's the 'perfect field for you'?"

"Both." Jack said. He stuck his head out of the window to see what the traffic was like. "Okay. F**k this. I'm walking to the park. I'll be waiting there for you." he said. Jack got out of the car and easily maneuvered through the toe-curlingly slow traffic onto the sidewalk where he calmly strolled the rest of the way to the crime scene.

"D***n it," I mumbled to myself, blasting the horn. "The one time I get a real, actual case--THE ONE TIME!!!--there has to be a traffic crisis. Okay, all right, that's it!" I placed the flashy lights that all cops had on top of my truck and pressed the button, letting it flash. The traffic let me by, and I caught up to Jack pretty easily, slowing down to about five miles per hour until I was at his pace. "Well, should've thought of that a long time ago," I remarked to myself, loudly. "Would've saved me a lot of time."

Jack was the first to get to the crime scene while he waited for her to park. There were apparently a few leftover newscasters waiting for the CSI people to arrive, they all formed a press mob near the yellow tape marking the crime scene. "Goddamnit all!" he cursed loud enough for the entire mob of reporters to hear. He was immediately swarmed by cameramen, writers, and field reporters all asking questions. "Alright, alright. One question at a time people." Jack said. The reporter up front placed a recorder near Jack's face and asked "What are your thoughts on the current situation? Do you have any leads yet?"
"I plead the second" Jack replied.
The reporter looked confused. "The right to bear arms?"
"Damn skippy! Now get the f**k outta my face before I write you up for hindering a police investigation." he growled. The reporters all moved out of his way so Jack could get past the tape to take a quick lookover of the scene before his partner showed up.

"So very sorry," I said to the reporters, as I'd come up just behind Jack. "He means that he pleads the fifth. We currently have no leads to the investigation that can be available to the public, but the media will be informed as soon as some available information comes to light, I promise. We're working very hard on this case. I promise that I will do the best of my abilities to complete this case and put this murderer behind bars."
I walked up to Jack, studying the corpse. She'd been dragged out of the river, but she was still exactly as she'd been when found--rocks tied to her wrists, scratches everywhere, her eyes wide open and staring. She was sopping wet, absolutely drenched. I snapped on my stretchy gloves and dug through her pockets. "Aha! A wallet," I exclaimed as the normal PD started putting red tape around the perimeter. I flipped it open. "Mm. 'Stacy Jennings, aged 23.' Well, either this is the wrong wallet or our dead girl here got a complete makeover. She looks like something from a drug dealer's place." I showed him the photo. Even waterlogged, I could tell that this girl in the photo--though she still had the same blond hair and green eyes--had black hair extensions, several tattoos on her face, and a cigarette in-between her lips. "Whoa." I tsked. "Each case has its own quirks, but I have never seen this--" I gestured to the body--she looked like a confident politician in dress-- "--being this." I gestured to the picture. "What's your opinion, newbie?"
Before he could answer, I pulled up her shirt to reveal her stomach. "Oh my God." Written in her own blood--no doubt cut by a knife--were the words on her stomach:

I'M A PROSTITUTE AND PROUD OF IT.

I clapped a hand over my mouth, and looked at him, my expression grim. "Well, looks like somebody was certainly pissed at our victim." I pulled the shirt back up to cover the knife wounds. "How, um...about we head back to the station? We've already got DNA and photos, and I think that you scared most of the reporters off, so the traffic's cleared up." I looked around uneasily. "Okay, okay," I called to a fellow cop, "hey, Johnny, can you, um, deal with this from here? I don't know..."
Johnny Rikerton walked up, pushing some of his hair from his eyes.
"This is my friend, Detective Rikerton," I told Jack. "He helps sometimes in our cases."
Johnny smiled grimly at me. "Hey, there. Yeah, I can deal with this from here. Why, you getting scared, Jez?"
I narrowed my eyes. "Shut the f**k up, Johnny. I deal just fine. But I got my newbie here, and I doubt YOU dealt with anything this...ugly...on your first case. If I remember right, you were on a rape case and you vomited on the victim."
He rolled his eyes. "That past is the past."
"She had to do her kit with vomit in her hair, Johnny!"
"Because they couldn't clean her up. It might have damaged the evidence."
"Anyway, just deal with this, 'kay? I'm gonna take Jack to the station and work on this from there." I rolled my eyes at him. "YOU don't do anything stupid," I admonished him, and Johnny rolled his eyes but did a thumbs-up. I turned to Jack and tossed him the keys. "Wanna drive? I don't trust my driving skills without traffic. I'm a freaking speed demon."

"Alright. Let's go." Jack grabbed the keys and leaped in the car "Dukes of Hazard" style.

(I've never seen the Dukes of Hazard...LOL)

As soon as I was safe in the passenger seat, (though I wasn't sure I could call myself "safe" with Jack) I made a call to the captain. "Hey, Cap'n," I told Captain Stabden, "we looked at the body. Make sure they get photos of her stomach."
"Okay," Captain Stabden replied. "How's the newbie?"
I rolled my eyes to myself and mouthed "Authority figures" to Jack. Jeez, sometimes I wondered whether Stabden should have been a police captain or a mother hen. "Well, he didn't get shot," I joked lamely. "Seriously, Cap'n, he's fine. And, so far, my car hasn't broken down on us."
"Great. I worry about you when you're in that deathtrap."
"Cap'n! It hasn't broken down for two whole months. That's not just a record, it's an amazing record!" I smiled, signalling to Jack that I was just teasing. I had actually made it FOUR months without my piece of junk crashing on me. "Anyway, Cap'n, we'll be there soon where we can put some of this together just a little bit better."
"All right," he said, and I heard a click. Hung up.
"You know, I've gone farther than two months without my truck breaking down," I tried to assure Jack. "It's actually gone twice more than that, so far. Just don't let it die on us this time. Cap'n'll kill us if we're late. This guy has to be brought down fast. Murderers usually murder again."

As we drove, I wondered what I could say to make conversation. Jack didn't seem like a particularly talkative guy, and I wasn't an exact chatterbox myself, but it felt uncomfortable just to spend our first day together in silence. "I'm sorry that this was your first case," I offered as way of a conversation. "My first was a counterfeit. Really, it's not normally all this bad. Sometimes, it actually feels really good to be a cop. Of course," I blathered, "it's always good to be a cop--people rely on you, people are grateful to you, you get to bring justice to a place that would be lawless without us. There are a lot of things wrong with the world, but I think we help a lot anyway, and that's good--" I rambled. "Oh, crap. And here I thought I'd be cool and calm and collected and you'd have a good first day here. If you like, we can switch cases. It might piss the captain off, but he'll understand," I suggested. "He's a pretty understanding guy, Captain Stabden."
