Yes, the 53rd is necessary as I imagine this will still be on the front page at this time next year. rofl I was just going to post my comments in the chat thread because I'm not much of a topic starter, but... Well, I figure the main reason behind the "stagnation" of the guild is that we all do that. We must look quite dead to outsiders and it's something I want to change.
Oh s**t! I hijacked my own topic!
Anywho. Back to the Grammy's. Did you watch? I usually think the winners are bullshit (and this year was no different), but I watched for the performances.
Much to my shame, my favorite act happened to be Justin Bieber. sweatdrop He had ninjas, okay? I was having total flashblacks to the Mortal Kombat movies. Then when Jaden popped out of the floor and started in on his rap, I realized it was the Karate Kid theme song. And I've been an Usher fan ever since "You Make Me Wanna," so I always love seeing him. Did anyone else notice that one of the ninjas totally ate it? He did a flip off of one of the rises and landed on his back. He got up really quick and they switched cameras as soon as it happened, but I could see him holding his back and limping.
Of course I have to mention Lady Gaga coming in in an egg. I suppose that's one way not to have to do any red carpet interviews... I was pretty disappointed with her, really. Her costumes weren't so much crazy as they were just really ugly. And talk about brazen plagiarism. Even I noticed that her new song is a blatant rip-off of Madonna's "Express Yourself." She had Madonna's iconic ponytail look, too. But seriously, the chorus on that song. I can't believe none of her people noticed. Why would they even let her put that out? Does she think she's such hot s**t that she can go against Madonna, now? The Material Girl's legal team is probably getting ready to eat her for breakfast. confused

I didn't watch them 'cause I completely forgot they were on...but I did hear that Justin Bieber lost the Best New Artist to a jazz singer, which I am completely okay with. He annoys me. (And looking up her stuff, Esperanza Spalding has a beautiful voice - I think she deserved the win.)
I listened to Lady Gaga's new song the other night and had to put something else on about halfway through, because I just didn't like it and didn't want it stuck in my head. I don't know much about songwriting, but I'm not very surprised it only took her ten minutes to write the thing. And the egg was interesting, but I agree - her costumes were just kind of ugly.
...and yeah, we kind of all just hang out in the chat threads. >.>

The only thing I know is that this year a video game soundtrack was actually nominated and won a category for the first time. But it was Civ IV. Not that it was bad by any stretch, but compared to some of the soundtracks I heard last year, I don't think it was the best or at least not the only one worth nominating. Most award shows are so insular or bad that I can't bring myself to watch them.

I am infinitely aloof of a lot of today's music. Mostly I follow soundtracks... but my boyfriend has been using that Pandora thing and we've gotten into new things.
Oh hey, that Muse thing is today's music, and they won an award for what we find bitchin'. Woot! pirate
I'll say Lady Gaga's kinda cool, I liked her 60 Minutes interview before the award show. She's apparently cool enough to get werewolves to strut her stuff. I just don't think I like her music style. xp
The dude with the muppets was my favorite. 3nodding

Hey Pasta I didn't watch them 'cause I completely forgot they were on...but I did hear that Justin Bieber lost the Best New Artist to a jazz singer, which I am completely okay with. He annoys me. (And looking up her stuff, Esperanza Spalding has a beautiful voice - I think she deserved the win.) That was surprising, but it didn't bother me too much. I mean, I felt a little bad for Justin just because he is so young and it seemed like a sure win, but on the other hand, he has millions of crazy fans, so he can handle a little disappointment. This was the first time I'd even heard of Esperanza and she seems like more of a "serious" musician, so it's nice that she won. And is it really Justin Bieber that annoys you or the screaming masses that go with him? He doesn't seem like a bad kid to me, but he's definitely suffering from overexposure. I saw him on Chelsea Handler the night after the Grammy's and she asked if he was disappointed that he lost. His reply was an enthusiastic "Yeah!" I found the honesty refreshing. None of that "Oh, it's an honor just to be nominated" crap. I don't know why it's such a faux pas just to say you wanted to win. Who the hell wants to lose? No, what really irked me was that some mediocre country ode to drunk dialing walked away with the most awards of the night. I don't think it should have won best country song against Miranda Lambert, much less record of the year. (And what the ******** is the difference between record of the year and song of the year? And why is it that whoever wins those also wins best album? It should take scads of good songs to be best album, not one hit single.)

Seems like most of those could be the same category anyway, I can't really recall the last time I listened to a full album and thought the entire thing was good.
And yeah, Bieber is way overexposed. I don't have any relation to anyone at all who would listen to him, nor do I watch any real shows he could possibly be on, and yet even I see him too much.
He seems like an alright kid who just gets screaming teenaged fans though, so no surprises there. And hell, if I was him I probably would be doing the same stuff. And really, he isn't too far off from being another Hanson/New Kids/Backstreet/Whatever of late.
