[ ENTERING FROM HIDING AREA. ]

She didn't know when she'd gotten ahead, or when she'd fallen behind. It was a constant pain to keep up with the other, watching backs disappear into the fog and then turn a few minutes and see them behind her. They were on the way to the lighthouse, right? But where was the lighthouse in the first place? Fog cloaked the area in a heavy blanket, and at points, Theta-two was content to whip out her cell phone and point it towards the heavy mist, the blue glow doing barely anything to the thick layers that kept them lost. At points, she thought about reaching out and grabbing them both to make sure they couldn't slip away again, but then she thought about how cowardly that would have felt and balled her hands into fists. Yeah, it was practically Battle Royale here, yeah, there were beasties in the dark just waiting to eat them alive. Hell, even other gas mask clones were out for their blood for all she knew. But there were others in worse shape than her, and theres was no time, no pause in wandering and getting lost to break down into hysterics. She had to keep going, no matter what. She had to stay strong, no matter the consequence.

She didn't really count the minutes until a looming tower appeared before her. It came as a thick, black figure appearing from the fog, the white layers clearing away barely enough to show the tower to her right in all its glory. The black ocean roared from beneath the cliff edges, and she tried to keep herself close to the figures that faded in and out of the fog. She didn't want to fall off in an attempt to find her way to the end of the game. Finally, the lighthouse materialized more, and she scrambled towards where she thought might have been safe; the large shape in the dark. The dirt and soil beneath her, the rock and stone were jagged and rugged as well, tripping her and tangling her feet so that she stumbled until the lighthouse materialized in front of her. Temporary safety. Her hands reached out, and she stopped herself short of smacking right into the base of the large structure, her heart pounding for a moment when she watched the fog, as though it would come alive at any moment. For a long moment, she stayed like that before turning and pressing her back to the wall, tilting her head back and exhaling to calm herself down again. There was nothing in the shadows. Not yet at least.

And then she looked to both sides, a new panic rising to her throat.

"Delta, Theta? Hey,"
Her voice nearly shook, but she forcefully rushed it back into her subconscious to strengthen her voice. "Hey, hey, tell me you guys made it safely." She prayed the figures she'd been following through the dark would materialize fully into the two gas mask figures she'd started to trust. She prayed they wouldn't materialize into a beastie come to eat her alive. Not after they'd come this far. No, not yet. They weren't allowed to die. Not yet.

( I hope this is alright for you guys! Q x Q )

{ Theta Nine ENTERS. }

The trip to the lighthouse took longer than geography would suggest, but Theta Nine was starting to expect that by now. He was silent for most of the trip, too intent on following Delta Four and also making sure that Theta Two didn't vanish into the mist somewhere. There were points during the trip, too many times for Theta Nine to dare relax his guard, when one or the other would vanish behind a plume of mist and be lost to sight too long for comfort. During those times, he would stand still or double back when he felt particularly courageous until he saw the one he was looking for again.

Times like those, he could hear his heartbeat thumping in his ears. He couldn't help but think that maybe he should have suggested that they all... hold hands or something. Maybe they could all hang on to a length of bandage. He had more than enough in his backpack. Surely the mist couldn't drag someone off bodily, especially with the strength of others to pull them back. But the ideas smacked of kindergarten and of more insecurity than he felt ready to surrender to just yet, so he didn't bother to say anything. He was always more than relieved when the lost figure would pop back up again. If someone got attacked along the way to the lighthouse, he was willing and able to help them fend off their attacker, but what could he do if the fog whisked them off to who knows where? He felt helpless, hated feeling that way.

At long last, the lighthouse walls loomed up ahead. For the first time in the entire walk, Theta Nine sprinted forward, running his hands over the walls before leaning his back against the nearest patch of solid wall. "Hey," he answered when he heard Theta Two's voice. His smiles were rare, but he smiled now. "Don't sound so worried. I made it. Sounds like you made it too." He strained his ears for Delta Four's voice. He was sure he saw her making her way here too, but he had to be sure. "No one's picked up any new injuries, right? So what now?"

( Note: I'm heading out for the night. Tomorrow, I'll be out for most of the day, so I might not get around to posting a response after 5 pm PST, though I'll try to check in. Sorry in advance for the inconvenience! )

[ Delta Four enters. ]

Delta Four tried to keep her breathing even, and she, too, thought about grabbing their arms or hands to try to stay together, but like the others, she refrained. She didn't know them that well yet, and it would just feel awkward and weird. The fog still taunted her in her mind, and she did feel a bit that it was mocking her, as did her memory. The two had to be linked somehow.

She heard the two voices and chimed in hers as well, breathing a sigh of relief. "No injuries, and all accounted for, it looks like." She rubbed her head. At least the headache had ebbed away. Slowly, but it had still ebbed away.

"So, what do we call each other? I'm Delta Five, of course, but maybe we could think of something shorter, because that is one hell of a long name to call out if we're watching each other's backs. It would be kind of awkward to call out in warning." She shrugged, letting out a short, quiet laugh. It was amusing. After that spoken thought, she leaned against the wall herself.

It was interesting - she went from attacking a Theta guy to save one of her own, and here she was befriending one. It just went to show you couldn't really judge by color, or by looks, or actions alone. You just had to be with someone to get to know them.

Catching her breath, Theta-two leaned heavily against the solid of the lighthouse, not so sure she wanted to move away from it just yet. It was an idiotic notion really, to think that if she stopped touching it, it would disappear into the fog again. But still the young adult clung, like a person did once they reached safety for a moment to catch their breath. But who was there to say that this place was safe at all? Fumbling, the girls fingers quickly touched on her knapsack, drawing over the wooden exterior of Excalibur in all of its glory. The only thing aside from her fists that she could use to stay alive. Her heart skipped a beat again, the scenes from the clearing before still bright and clear like fresh wounds in her mind. Everyone had turned so quickly on each other then... would the same happen to the three of them now? She quickly stomped the idea in her head. No, she thought firmly. She had to trust them for what it was worth. She had to keep whatever crap-level morals she still had with her and stay alive while doing so. Easier said than done, she thought scathingly, heart hammering. She couldn't give herself a headache thinking about the uncertainty of the future, if they had a future at all though.

When Theta-nine's voice rang out from her left, she inched closer along the wall of the lighthouse until he materialized in front of her, gas mask and all. She chanced a smile, something that no one could see. "Worried? Ff. What gave me away?" She joked, tossing her head back and forth pointedly. But it was obvious enough in the way she made sure that both Delta-four and Theta-nine were close by that she was relieved they were all still there in the flesh. Not like the fog could drag them off when she wasn't looking, right? Right...? "All in one place, thankfully. No beasties came around while I wasn't looking." She paused. "Almost thought I'd lost you at one point though, yeah?" She let out a breathless laugh. "And we don't want that, huh, boyo?" Clicking her tongue, the girl peered restlessly into the fog, shuffling her feet in the slightest. She could hear the sound of the pitch black ocean beneath, roaring up against the cliffs. She pointedly chose to ignore the shivers now riding up her back because of it.

When a female voice came through, Theta-two exhaled a breath of relief. Delta-four had made it safely as well. "That makes three of us uninjured then." She announced cheerfully. "As long as we dont count our sanity, yeah?" A soft tease for a dangerous situation. She listened when the other started to talk again about names. She couldn't help but agree. Their current names were ridiculously long, if they could be considered names at all. "Yeah. And its not like you can really call those names anyways. Delta-four, huh?" She tilted her head to the side, humming some sort of foreign tune as she thought. In the back of her head, she guessed that it was something from some sort of animated movie, but really, who cared out here on island-of-death? "Delta, Delta... De. Deets? Could always call you Dee, but thats pretty unoriginal, huh?" Crossing her arms, she glanced over to Theta-nine. "I don't know what to do about you though, boyo." Smiling under her mask, the girl gave a shrug, turning her eyes back to Delta-four. "You can call me anything you want. I'm Theta-two, I guess, but you can always call me Batman if you have nothin' else in mind." Her voice threaded in a joke, her eyes laced with amusement under the mask that hid her face.

But that would be a terrible name. She was nowhere near as kickass as him.

The lighthouse might not exactly be a true sanctuary, but it was better than wandering around befuddled by whatever impromptu labyrinth the mist felt like shaping. Theta Nine lingered in his lean against the wall, tension ebbed out of the stiff set of his shoulders as Delta Four chimed in. "Eh, I'm hard to lose," he replied to Theta Two, bravado tilting his chin up slightly. He could hope as much.

Hearing Delta Four's suggestion, he nodded agreement. "Might as well. There are so many Thetas and Deltas running around. It would be a pain to have to wait until someone finished saying 'Delta blah' or 'Theta blah' to figure out if they're talking about you. Precious seconds in battle and all." As he talked, he considered the options.

Theta Two's comments jogged something in Theta Nine's memory. "If you're going to be Batman, I guess that makes one of us Robin. And the other one can be... Alfred or something," he said, the words coming easily to him. Too easily. He paused, thinking them over. Made perfect sense to him, but he wasn't sure why. Were they his friends, back in his former life? The names were familiar enough to have belonged to friends, but he didn't think they were, somehow. A flippant note crept into his voice as he added, "Anyway, by this point, I'm getting pretty used to being called 'boyo.' No guarantees no one else will have that name, though."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 05, 2011 6:05 pm

"Heh," Delta Four had to stifle a laugh, grinning behind her mask. She tapped her foot three times, thinking hard. Batman, Robin, Alfred, was just too strange. The names weren't familiar to her at all; how did they come up with them right off the bat? They did have a ring of familiarity to them, she had to admit, but didn't know where they came from, or what they were. "How about something... coinciding with our own names? Mishmash of sorts." She pointed at Theta Two.

"Thetwo. Twota. Tatwo. .... Tattoo?" She shrugged, speaking aloud. "And for you, Theta Nine... Thene? Thetine? Thenime? ...Thyme?" Another chuckle. The two didn't have to keep the names, she was just having fun with them, and if they did take them, well. It was a show of good faith, really.

"For myself, let's see..." She went silent for a moment, thinking to herself, a little too loud for muttering, but just soft enough they couldn't hear unless they tried. "Delta Four, Delour, Deltora... Fourta, Fedora..." She gave yet another laugh. "So, for me... probably Deltora, or Fedora. Unless either of you can think of something better." Delta Four placed her hands palm up, giving another shrug, at a loss for what else to come up with. It was hard to mishmash names! It really was!

"Not," she added, "That you have to take them... I'm just giving out options."

( ugh, sorrysorry this took so long to get out 8 x 8 b
also, since the traveling thread is up, do you want to have them travel somewhere ~ ?
I'm probably gonna move my girl to the beach soon Q v Q <3
sorrysorryforbeingsuchanuisanceorzorz )

The chills that had been riding her spine all night long finally seemed to tame as she let the minutes tick on, simply basking in the shadows of the ever sturdy, ever silent lighthouse. She knew in the back of her mind that it would probably be a whole hell of a lot safer to keep on the move. She knew. But the stability of the lighthouse, the absolute knowledge that it was there and not wavering in and out of existence like the rest of the beasties and illusions in the fog gave her a slight comfort. Not to mention she was exhausted beyond belief and wouldn't mind sitting for a few seconds. And she did just that, back sliding down the exterior of the lighthouse until she felt her a** hit the ground with a dull thud. "Lets hope so." She chided back to Theta-nine. "After all, we can't stay here forever. And the fog seems as stubborn as a god damned mule."

Looking over at her fellow Theta, the girl laughed softly. She imagined them all snapping their heads up in another battle like the one back in the clearing, trying to discern just who was being warned before all of them were taken out. Because honestly, screaming "Theta!" could easily make twelve heads snap up, and screaming "Two!" could just as easily do the same thing. Especially with the sheer amount of gas masks clones around, she thought wryly to herself, twisting her fingers together. "Precious seconds indeed. I'd rather waste what time I have before getting jumped by beasties figuring out how to beat them up, not whether or not they're coming after me or ******** over when Theta-two commented on the Batman references, Theta-two gave a s**t-eating grin under her mask. Where did she even know all of this from? Why did she even care so much? Maybe she had been some sort of comic-nerd in a past life. Maybe she'd sat in comic stores surfing through thousands of volumes for the single one she didn't own yet. But that itched her wrong. That made her frown. Was she really like that in the life that she didn't remember? Was she something back then that she didn't want to be now? "No way," Theta-two said to her fellow Theta in amusement. "Nah, Alfred's cool, but otherwise useless. Joker's where its all at." ********, why was this coming so easily to her? She quickly pressed the knowledge to the back of her mind. She didn't care for the copious amount of nerd references she seemed to make. She just didn't want to have a flashback one day and realize she was some kind of girl that never saw sunlight. Some kind of girl that she felt she couldn't stand with how she was now.

Listening to Delta-four's suggestions, Theta-two twisted her head towards the girl, laughing at the suggestion she was given. Well, they weren't comic nerd references, but they sure as hell were amusing. Standing, the Theta dusted herself off and stretched her hands above her head before gesturing with a languid sort of ease towards them both. "Thyme, Tattoo, and Fedora, huh?" She repeated the last ones with a note of amusement. She wondered what kind of reactions the other gas mask clones would react with if she suddenly shouted "Fedora!" in battle. She wondered briefly if they'd all snap their heads up, expect to see some fedora wearing beastie floating down from the sky while Delta Four fended off what was actually there. The terribly idiotic scenario's were quickly shoved from her mind. "Well, if we go with those, we could be the Thyme Tattoo Fedora... I dont know, trio, yeah?" She laughed a little, even though it was a terrible joke. "Sounds like fun to me."

PostPosted: Wed Apr 06, 2011 11:28 am

((No worries! And I was pondering travel options too. I'm fine with the beach.))

"We could stay here forever. It just probably wouldn't be a very good kind of forever," Theta Nine returned wryly, rolling his shoulders as he stared into the mist. How many more gas mask troopers were out there? And how many of them would actually challenge them for their lives? He hunched down slightly. "Let's get some rest and make some plans before we set off to lands unknown." An excuse to linger by the lighthouse a moment longer? Maybe. He didn't like that he was starting to make excuses to take the safe option, but discretion was the better part of valor, sometimes. No point in getting the others in danger -- his mind shied from the notion of death, even now -- to satisfy his own curiosity. A sense of responsibility for his two fellow troopers weighed on him, balancing the impulse of curiosity for now.

"I'm good with being part of the Thyme Tattoo Fedora trio," Theta Nine declared, more nerdiness readily forthcoming, if not of the Batman variety. "Fedoras are right at home in the mist. Tattoos are too." Disjointed scenes from various noir movies flickered into his mind, and he shook them off with a shrug of a shoulder. They weren't the most comforting images to be thinking of right now, but there was a faint thrill of excitement in mentally casting the trio as hardboiled detectives. But he had to admit, "I figure thyme is okay, but I have no idea what that is. Help?" Not letting go of any clue of the past, oh no, even though he suspected no grand epiphanies were lying in wait behind a definition of the term.

Circling back to the thought of travel, he -- Thyme, now? -- rubbed at his jaw as he thought over the map he had seen in the squad home base. "It looked like the beach might be the closest to us. I could sure hear the ocean on the way here." He cheered right up at a thought. "Maybe we could even just sail away from here and this mulish fog." Reason and pessimism soon intervened. "That's probably too easy an out for whatever plans the man in the classroom had. Still, there might be clues."

(( I'm okay with beach. My char will follow yours if you wish :3 ))

Fog. Oh, how she hated the fog. Rhetorical and an euphemism to boot, it just kept taunting her endlessly. "Wherever we stay, I think there's going to be fog." She sighed, leaning against the wall next to Theta Two and sliding down to crouch next to her, still wary of the fog around them. Had to be on their guard -- at least one of them did, anyway.

"TTF Trio. How fitting!" She held out a hand for them to shake. "So we're teamed up, and not gonna go anywhere without the others, right? Got each other's backs and all that. Tattoo, Thyme, and Fedora."

"Time... Thyme... I think is two different things? Or two different meanings." Delta Four -- now known as Fedora -- tilted her head in thought, and then shrugged. "I think...? I think I was talking about the plant?" Oh well. They could deal with it later. How strange, how nerdy things came easier to them than other things.

She couldn't help but giggle at the image in her head, speaking it aloud. "Imagine it. A wispy looking herb plant with tattoos on it wearing a fedora. And fighting those stupid shadow fog things. HAH!" Her chuckles diminished and she smiled behind the mask, though her shoulders still shook with silent laughter.

"I vote for going to explore clues. As long as we're together, we shouldn't have a problem."
PostPosted: Wed Apr 06, 2011 4:41 pm

( sounds good to me then C: should we all just exit and move to the traveling thread to roleplay until the ooc-twelve hours are up? CX <3 )

"What, afraid of having to deal with us two for eternity? I promise not to drive you insane if that happens."
Theta-two responded with an airy humor. She wasn't sure where she pulled it from; the light-heartedness of her tone. At any moment, a beastie could come up from behind, take any one of them down, and yet the conversation seemed as easy to sink into as if they were simply sitting down for a cup of coffee on a warm, sunny afternoon in August. Warm and sunny... now didn't that sound nice. "Sounds good to me. But we shouldn't take too long, 'else the beasties might show up again. And who knows how many of those horses are running around." The girl glanced up, her eyes scanning the ever foggy terrain. But... was it just her imagination as she watched the white walls thin, dark slices of uneven ground flickering in and out of view? If the gas mask wasn't still on, she might have smacked herself, pinched herself, or done something to ensure she wasn't just dreaming. Because her only option now was sticking herself with Excalibur, and that didn't sound entirely appetizing now, did it?

"Thyme Fedora Tattoo Trio."
Theta - now Tattoo, though, huh? - mimicked, her mouth curving up into a slight smile. Well, modern society would have laughed at them, but at least it was better than nothing. She glanced at Fedora, her mind reeling with amusement. For some reason, she couldn't help but feel like she liked those classy hats, even though she couldn't remember her past, and alongside that, ever even wearing one. Briefly she glanced down at herself, mind reeling with questions. Had she had tattoos as her past-self? Did she plant thyme in a quaint, house-wife-worthy garden? Was she even old enough to care? Did she try on fedora's in the mall with a friend, boasting about beauty and being classy as classy could be?

"Fedora's are pretty stylish too, yeah? I'd take one over this damned gas mask if it wouldn't kill me."
Laughing, the girl shrugged both of her shoulders up, dipping her head. She had a striking feeling that she liked jeans over skirts, and that had she been wearing some, she would have habitually tucked her thumbs into the worn out pockets. "Anyways, can't you imagine us all black and white, pinstripes and fedora's while we hold a smokin' gun? Just like those classy detectives in spy novels pretendin' to be as good as the one and only Sherlock Holmes." She wondered briefly what they'd look like as those kind of boys n' girls; if she was a brunette or a blond? Would she wear a dress? Would she fight for a pair of slick, black dress pants to align perfectly with her top? Was she the type to even care?

When Delta-four - Fedora! - abbreviated their name, Tattoo had to laugh. What an odd team they made, but an interesting one all the same. Slowly but surely, her apprehension seemed to melt. "I've got your back if you've got mine, chica." Glancing down at the hand, the Theta grinned for a moment, moving to grab it with both hands, curling Fedora's fingers until they formed a loose fist. In wry amusement, she formed a fist with her own and bumped their knuckles together, and somehow, it felt right for her. "Pleasure to meet you." She said with a lilt to her voice, the smile behind her mask as bright as it could get in a place like this.

"Thyme? S'some sort of plant, I think."
She couldn't clearly remember what the plant looked like, or even if it was a plant in the first place. Wait, right. It was a herb. The information that circled her head and yet had managed to sever all ties with her past was still foggy. It was frustrating, trying to clearly grab at the strands of information, and then realize that even with them, she was no closer to breaking down the wall between her and her past than she was without it. "I think my lack of knowledge cuts me out of the running for being a gardener in my past life though," She teased lightly, tilting her head to imagine that kind of thing. Well, it was better than nerd-with-no-life. Turning to Fedora, she couldn't help but laugh behind the gas mask at the idea of such a ridiculous thing. "Yeah, 'n that beastie will trump everyone else, huh?" She joked smoothly, twisting her hands together.

Tilting her head towards Thyme, the girl swayed back onto her heels, standing a few inches taller before dropping down again and glancing from one to the other. "The beach sounds like a good idea," A shiver rode her back however, at the idea of the black ocean and the idea that beasties could just as easily inhabit it. Her mind flew to Kelpies, and the way they dragged their prey down into the depths. And then she paused to wonder, why the ******** do I know that? "If only sailing away was the one way ticket out." She sighed, clasping her hands behind her back. "But you never know, hell, maybe we'll find a ghost ship next if we get to the beach. That'd be new, huh? How often do you see one of those?" Padding forward a few inches towards the fog, the girl turned back to them, offering both of her arms.

"So here we go again then, huh?"
She smiled, even though they couldn't see. "Maybe we should stick a bit closer this time, as girly as that sounds. It might be a long walk to the beach. I don't wanna be losing either of you before we get there."

( Can do! Probably best to get the OOC wait started as quickly as possible. ^^ I'm going to move on, since I won't be on much until late tomorrow. )

Still gazing into the mist, Theta Nine -- Thyme, Thyme, best get used it -- gave a quiet laugh at... Tattoo's lighthearted words. "Afraid of having to wear a gas mask and walk around in the fog forever, more like." There was a brief, sharp intake of breath as he considered the possibility of more flame-breathing horses around. He swallowed hard. "I still have a hard time believing what I saw, in that battle earlier." On more than one level. He had been startled not only by how much the horse was unlike none other he recalled (horses aren't supposed to breathe flame or cause the ground to rot!) but also by how quickly the others turned on each other when a pendant was up for grabs. Would his present company act the same way? He didn't think so, didn't want to think so. He might be getting too attached than was prudent, he realized, but he couldn't and wouldn't let fear paralyze and numb him. Whatever will be will be.

"I for one am glad that the guns assigned to our fellow troopers don't seem to smoke. Too bad they didn't just let us wear trenchcoats and fedoras, though. We'd still be almost as anonymous in those," he remarked, his voice grumbly but still good-natured. Watching Fedora and Tattoo's hands, he made a fist as well, bumping his knuckles gently against their hands. "We're a team. Better than the Three Musketeers." Ambitious, but why not? "You can count on me to have your backs." It was a promise.

The mental image of a combative, tattooed herb in a fedora drew out another laugh. "Shadowboxing plant? Fantastic. If we ever get a chance, we'll print it on some shirts. The new TTF Trio uniform," he tossed out lightly, taking a step toward the fog. An inkling from his former self rebelled at the thought of such a goofy t-shirt (his street cred is going to /tank/), but he quashed the thought. It was a joke. Focus on having a future first, that's it. On impulse, the gas mask trooper formerly known as Theta Nine reached out to take Fedora and Tattoo by the hands or wrists, if they'd let him. "Very, very kindergarten," he noted, rueful. "But it beats getting separated on the way to the beach. If anyone asks, no hand-holding /ever/ happened." It was even technically true with the thick gloves on their hands, but all the same, he pictured his street cred dropping even further. "People with weapons," a.k.a. not him, "should probably take them out and have them ready, just in case."

Deep breath. "Here we go." After one more deep breath, he stepped away into the mist.

A soft chuckle escaped Fedora's lips, and she gripped both of the other's hands, holding tight. There was nothing more to say.

( FFFF short post is short. /will make longer one in traveling thread )

Watching her group members move, Theta-two - Tattoo, she reminded herself with a snicker - moved forward and linked both of them to her arms. It was time to brave the mist again, it seemed. It was time to get on the move.

"Off we go then."
She murmured. And then they were gone.
