Quyen waddled a little bit through the late summer meadows, panting a bit as she sought the shade of a large, old oak's spreading branches. Reaching down, she nibbled on the golden grasses and grimaced. She'd need proper green grass until the foals arrived, so staying near her family might not be an option, as she'd hoped.

Quyen sighed. It was all an accident. That spotted Arion probably hadn't meant to get her pregnant, but it didn't necessarily mean that it was all right. He seemed a decent sort, so no problems there. It was just...her parents, though lifemated and (they assured her, which she didn't wholly believe) very much in love with each other, they didn't spend a lot of time together. A more rational Star would have reasoned that a warrior Lyra was never going to give a lot of time and energy to a delicate Nova, but Quyen had always given herself lots of leave to be irrational about her parents' relationship. Her father was a flirt and her mother was heartbreakingly true to him. That was central to the problem. The fact that she was a warrior Lyra like him didn't help, but she always tried to avoid that similarity between the two.

Which brought it all back to this moment. How to explain to two such parents that she was expecting foals from a stallion she wasn't even lifemated to? Her mother would give her a sad, loving smile and tell her to believe in the stallion, beyond all hope and reason. Her father...eeesh. Either he'd end up being the father in the family territory with the weapon of choice for whenever any stallion got near her again (which would deeply disturb Quyen), or he'd smirk and tease her (which she, maybe unreasonably, expected from him). Mercilessly. Either way, it meant Quyen had no real desire to go home, at least until things were sorted with the Arion. Maybe not even then. It depended on whether she saw the guy again.

User ImageDiya had gone off on his own after the incident, feeling too bad for his reckless actions. Incident. Yes. That was what he was calling it. There was no way the naive Arion would have done something like that on his own. He wasn't sure what had come over him. It was like another force had been controlling him. Yet he knew it was him the entire time. There was no otherworldly power in possession of his body. He had done it. And though it had only been once, it was engraved in his mind constantly.

The guilt. Oh, the guilt was strong. The stallion had no idea what had become of the mare after that one incident. The feeling was the strongest inside him. It had been concessional, of course. Nonetheless, he still felt bad about it. They were not a mated pair. Nor did he even catch her name. His parents had taught him the importance of finding that one mare perfect for you. That couldn't be her...Could it? It was debatable. He was told the mare you decide to mate for life with would always be on your mind. The scarfed one sure was, lately.

Sighing, his ears drooping against his neck, Diya slowly walked through the forest he had entered the day previous for a place to sleep. Without his knowledge, his hooves had been searching the lands, never in one place twice, in search of the elusive mare. Though he felt such guilt, there was another emotion buried too deep for him to notice. He wanted to see her. For whatever reason, he needed to. At least just once more, to settle things.

Giving a great yawn, he came to the exit of the forest, his eyes only now fully opening. They fell upon a familiar shape in the distance. Stopping in his tracks, he debated going the other way before he was seen. But before he could come to a decision, his feet seemed to come to it, first. Moving in her direction slowly, his head hanging like one who did a terribly crime. Coming closer, it was clear now he should indeed be feeling guilty.

"Oh....Um....Hello," Diya managed to get out, stopping a good 8 feet away, his ears still drooped low against the sides of his head. Even his wings were drooping as much as they could in their constant upright position.

Quyen glanced up at the sound of hoofbeats and a stallion saying hello in a familiar voice. Before her was the naive Arion who'd gotten her preggorz. He seemed distraught and nervous about seeing her. This could not be good.

Swallowing the anxieties, she took a deep breath and nodded, turning around to face him with less than her usual grace.

"Good afternoon," she said as calmly as she could. "Nice, sunny weather, although I could wish for better pastures right now. Maybe a nice valley stuffed with sweet green grass," she admitted. Quyen cursed herself for the blandness, but then reasoned that the blandness would keep things from blowing up, and he was too decent a stallion to deserve any near-irrational bursts of temper.

The stallion's ears perked forward at the sound of her voice, his head raising a little bit. Accident aside, she didn't seem too mad about the circumstances. Diya had to be honest, the prospect of the mare yelling at him over taking off and now this was the worst worry on his mind. Not that seeing their small involvement had a consequence was a better way of looking at things. But had she yelled at him, he wouldn't have been able to handle that. Calmness, he could. Calmness worked. So he was secretly glad of the blandness, for now. So long as it stayed this way.

"Uh..." He struggled with the right words. Hearing talk of weather was the last thing he expected. Wasn't addressing the problem and finding a solution quickly better than this awkward, idle chat? Just to get it over with and squash his fears. He didn't know her. There might still be a chance she would yell later.

The thought of raised voices made his ears droop, agaiin.

"Oh, yes. It is very nice." And all went quiet, again. The Arion's blue eyes were fixed upon the mare's, not wishing to look anywhere else. Finally, he decided he may as well just blurt one thing out he wanted to.

"I am sorry for leaving you so soon." There. One thing done.

That was...fast. This stallion clearly didn't feel like mincing words at a time like this, and at least he'd chosen a less confrontational way to bring up the subject: apology, for which Quyen was willing to forgive him his crimes. For now, at least. She sighed.

"It's OK. My father did that to my mother, his own lifemate, very often when I was growing up, and he never really had the grace to apologize for that," she said, looking at the ground. It was a horrible thing to say, but he should be aware of the truth. and why she wasn't blowing up at him. His decision to apologize right off the bat was the correct action on his part, as was her decision to sit on her potential anger and frustration at her lot in life. This seemed like it was, quite honestly, going to go well for them.

Diya kept his ground, listening to her words in silence. His face wasn't as downcast as it was before, though his mood wasn't perked up any more than it had been moments before. A change in how she was raised made her less angry about the situation, okay. He got that. Still didn't make it right. Whether you were lifemated or it was an accident. It just wasn't right.

But he kept his mouth shut on those concerns. For all he knew, this mare might take offense to him saying her family life wasn't right, in his eyes. For getting her in this situation, he owed her to be as nice as possible. Not that that was hard for the Arion to do. By nature, Diya was a very timid and gentle stallion. If not a little...Dense at times.

"Regardless...That's not who I am. Or, who I thought I was." What kind of proper stallion panicked and left a mare he had just been with like that without even a "Goodbye, I'll stop by later"? "I...Would like to be around more. Considering the....Circumstances." Of which he couldn't bring himself to name out loud. Did he have to? It was obvious what he meant. "If you would have me, that is."

This felt almost too good to be true, it was happening so fast. The stallion wanted to stick around a while? Really? The idea of a long-term romantic relationship along the lines of lifemating had always appealed to Quyen, even as a tiny filly. It was just that her parents had given her very little faith in such things really ever happening like in the stories her mother had told her. And now this stallion wanted to stick around, against Quyen's worries and fears.

A slow smile spread across her face. OK. So she wasn't passionately in love with him. So what? He was kind, considerate, gentle and, dare she say it, kinda cute, both physically and in mannerisms. Quyen definitely found that she was increasingly approving of him as the father of her foals. Could she come to love him? Quite likely. Did it matter more to have a passionate affair, however brief, or a long-term relationship that blossomed into something truly beautiful from a start in friendship? Well, this stallion so far was too good an offer to pass up, sooo....

"Feel free to stick around," she replied. "I'm finding that I like you more as things go along, and I wouldn't mind staying with you as long as we're both happy."

Well. That wasn't as bad as it could have been. Not at all, in fact. His fears of her being the type to have one night stands and never want to see him, again, were dashed. It wasn't that he loved her, either. His father had taught him a little fun every once in a while was fine. More so if it produced foals, since it was always good to carry on your lineage as often as possible. Diya was, fortunately, not anything his father had expected of him.

Plus, there was the emotional connection he felt with the strange mare. She had been his first. He didn't wish to just forget about her so quickly if even a little friendship could be cultivated from the short union. Now, when the Arion allowed his eyes to trail across her, there was more than one reason to stay around. At least he had not found her too late.

At her smile, the brown stallion allowed himself to return it, if not slowly and with only a slight curve of his mouth. The rapid beating of his heart in nervousness wasn't to be pushed aside easily.

"That....That's good. I guess it would be appropriate to start from the beginning...I am Diya al Din. I don't exactly belong anywhere at the moment." Not since he ran away from his father's territory. Like the coward he had been, instead of standing up to the older stallion. This time, however, he would grow that spine he so dearly needed.

Quyen bowed her head gravely and gracefully, as her mother had taught her to do when meeting someone for the first time. "It is indeed a good idea to start from the beginning. It is a pleasure to meet you, Diya al Din. I am Quyen. I don't exactly belong anywhere at the moment myself."

She decided not to mention the fact that she wasn't interested in going home, since her mother and brother were in a Nova herd together, and her sister and father didn't belong anywhere. Besides, Quyen really wasn't in favor of going back to be around her dratted playboy father.

Glancing up, she noticed that the sun was drifting lower on the horizon...and there had to be grass better than this somewhere. The idea of looking for better grass elsewhere gave her another idea to get closer to this stallion, since both she and him were interested in staying together. "Would you walk with me? I'd like to find fresher grass. Better for me and the foals inside me," she added a titch shyly. Though Quyen was the family tomboy, there were things she was definitely not ready to discuss, and the finer details of pregnancy was one of them. On the other hand, spending time with Diya al Din would let them get to know each other better. Who knows? This might even kindle a tiny romantic flame between the two.
