Kaiden loped along the fringe of the woods, ears pivoting and tail high. He had come a long way from his puppy days when police work was only a dream. He was closer now, but, unfortunately, he was not quite there. His independence, a trait commonly found in his breed, was making it difficult, but it was not something he wanted to lose, and he struggled with this greatly. He understood that obeying orders was important, that the best K-9's were known for their ability to follow commands to the smallest of details, not the ability to lead and take decision into their own paws. Humans, he knew, knew best.

But at the same time, what was wrong with taking action when it was not called for and stopping when it was? It may have been valued if he had chosen to live the life of a sled-dog, where weaknesses in the ice was not something people always noticed, and dogs were always at the forefront, but that was not the career he wanted. He wanted to be admired to the point were officers would accept and allow his decisions, not just their own, and he strived towards that purpose. Even now he was practicing, determined to train for what he knew would be his future career. Whatever it was he could find, he tried: chasing predators away, crushing outcast attacks before they could leave the woods, and even playing pretend when there was a lack of real opponents. He would do whatever it took to reach his goal.

Dakota was trotting along the tree line, her nose to the ground, in search of any sign of a squirrel, chipmunk, or even rabbit that she could track (or possibly chase). She had to keep her search and rescue skills up to par if she wanted to be the best and save as many lives as possible, both human and animal. Her most recent success had happened over the Summer when a child had gone missing during a camping trip. Dakota and her human had been called in along with other search and rescue people and canines. She had been able to track the girl from the campsite to a cave about three miles away. Needless to say, the child was happy to see her and Dakota was happy to stay with the little girl until more help came.

Dakota sat and smiled to herself, remembering the look on the girl's face when she realized that she was there to help. She also remembered how cold and scared the little girl was when she wrapped herself around the child. The best part of that 'mission' was when the girl was reunited with her parents. Dakota always loved happy endings, it was what she lived for.
She knew that in order to create more happy endings, she had to be at the top of her game, which was why she was out trying to 'track' little creatures. Looking around and not seeing anything, she decided to move on, her nose going back to the ground.

Kaiden had begun to think it would be another day of battling imaginary foes when a touch of dog-scented wind swept past his nose. Immediately he was on the alert. He approached, trying to gather as much information about the dog as he could before she noticed him. A million scenarios raced through his mind, and he tried to be prepared for each and every one.

Admittedly, however, all of them involved him performing some heroic deed, on the assumption that the other canine was of a dangerous nature. But then he reached sight of the husky and, at first glance, that didn't seem to be the case. The dog he saw before him wore a well-kept collar, an obvious sign that she was owned, and he knew of very little pets that purposely sought to seriously endanger another. It was the dogs that lacked humans he was worried about.

Still, that was all he had to go on, and it was not enough. She appeared to be in search of something, and although it sparked suspicion in him, it was no excuse to be rude and demand to know, especially when he wasn't even an official officer yet. So, instead, he cleared his throat, trying for her attention.

"Do you need help?"

Dakota jumped at the voice, suddenly startled from her concentration. What the devil?! She turned and looked the male up and down, giving him an odd look. She was not used to being startled, especially by another dog.
"Uh...no, thank you." Her adrenaline was still coursing through her. How had she not known he was right behind her?! Why didn't she realize he was there? Ugh...I really gotta be more aware of my surroundings. Dakota wondered if this new dog was a friend or a foe, considering she was in an area that was frequented by dogs who lived with and without humans. She looked this male up and down, trying to figure out which he was. He looked well kept; like his fur was well brushed and his nails trimmed. She walked around him, 'inspecting him' if you will. "I haven't seen you around here before...Who are you?" She had lived in the area for a while, her human, and thus she, herself, lived not far off, a little ways into the forest.

Kaiden took note of the husky's scrutiny, knowing it could be the suspicion of a dog up to no good but knowing, too, that he had just done the same. He shook his head, berating himself for constantly assuming (or perhaps hoping for) the worst. Certainly, the female had given him no concrete reason to be cautious, and although it was best to remain wary as they had only met, he shouldn't let it get to the point where it would cloud his judgement.

"Kaiden," he replied when she spoke, offering a short wag of his tail as both a silent apology for his secret thoughts and a means of communicating his friendly intentions. "Officer-in-training-to-be, I hope. What of you?"
