I'm completely incapable of just sitting and writing. So because of my success with the format I went with last year (a few "chapters" of the story are still posted in the Story area here) I decided to go ahead and go with that again. Kind of.

The Plot (What? There's a plot in one of Malkie's stories?)
The Main Character is sucked through The Portal into The Shadow World where he will go on The Journey with his Trusty Sidekicks under the guidance of his Mentor to battle The Big Bad and his Evil Organization, while also struggling with some Man vs Self and Science vs Magic issues on the side.

Pretty straight forward right? Basic fantasy novel. None of that was meant to reference tropes, it's just what I'm calling things for the moment. Hell, it might be what I continue to call things. The tropes come into this conversation later.

So, what I think I'm going for here is a kind of sly humor. Maybe not full on Hitchhiker's Guide, but something that doesn't take itself -too- seriously. That's where the tropes come in.

I generally use music to fuel my writing, and that will still be the case here, this is just a little added bit of fun. To kind of help with the 'satire' feel I'm going for I decided to purposely include some tropes into my novel. I don't know how all of these will work yet, but my goal is to fit ALL of them within the text in a way that does in fact work.

How the list was generated: I literally just pulled up TVTropes and hit the Random button 50 times. Yes. 50. Whatever came up is what I'm working with. Whew, that's a lot of tropes.

As per last year's format, there's music involved too. Music, for me, is a very powerful tool to evoke emotion in my characters, set scenes, and even determine events. It's a great starting point, so again I'm using a randomized list of songs to set the mood. Not going to post them all here, but here's a random sampling from the random sampling list. I think last year it took me 150 songs or so to get to 50k.

The Music
1) Highlander Theme- Queen
10) Mississippi Queen- Mountain
16) Remains of the Day- The Corpse Bride Soundtrack
21) Behind Blue Eyes- The Who
27) Brand New Day- Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog
30) Piano man- Billy Joel
35) Baby Got Back- Jonathan Coulton
40) Beautiful- Goldfrap
43) California Dreaming- The Mamas and the Papas
51) The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny- Lemon Demon
57) Grace Kelly- Mika
59) Wolf Like Me- TV On the Radio
66) One of the Boys- Katy Perry
69) Frodo, Don't Wear the Ring- Flight of the Conchords
75) Let the Monster Rise- Repo! The Genetic Opera
84) I'm not Okay- My Chemical Romance
90) Here I Am - Lyle Lovett
93) Golden Years- David Bowie
100) Mr Jones and Me- Counting Crows

The Characters

Note to self to remember: Hair color and eyecolor don't matter so much. Note it and move on. At least 90% of the story is "told in" greyscale. Shades>Tones

Walkers

Marie-Claire aka MC(The Hero) Female, late teens, early twenties, socially awkward, pixie cut, geeky, tomboyish. Mistaken for a boy by the people of the Shadow World. Grows mentally throughout the story (classic geek to hero type blah). Moderately intelligent and physically capable. Likely underestimated by those around her, but will prove to be a BAMF. Strong moral sense. Loyal. (The Watson)

Zach (The Loyal)
-Zach has been MC's BFF since diapers. He's more than a bit on the nerdy side, and doesn't make friends easily. However, he's loyal to the friends he has. HIs feelings for MC may be a bit crushy, but they are firmly in the Friend Zone. How he arrived in the SDW is unclear, but he follows MC through every trial, being supportive and even a bit protective.

Anestia (The Nameless) Transported 10 years ago from the same world as MC, but arrived in Errant territory. She went a bit mad with grief when she found out she would be unable to return home. Everything she does, she claims to be in the name of the Errant, but in reality she has him contained. (Not revealed until final showdown.) Mid 30's to 40's. She wears chains connected to those binding the Errant as a sort of psychic link that allows her to draw on his power. Big Bad Motivation: Returning home. (Chained by Fashion, Boss in Mook Clothing, Monster Lord)

Keepers

Adrien (The Valiant) First character with a name! A dishonored hero who was stripped of his title for running when he should have fought and died. He joins the group seeking to regain his honor through death in battle. He is a large man, strong, a career soldier with a tendency towards drunkenness. Generally kind. Views MC as sort of a "little brother" and takes her under his wing, teaching her how to fight and looking out for her. Mid 30s. (Big Brother Mentor, Death Seeker)

Rafe (The Rogue) This character will be in and out of the story line. Male late teens. Generally acting on the other side of the law, but nothing too horrible. Thief type. (Grave Robbing)

The Historian -The Cryptic Old Man

Eron (The Fair) the current heir to the regent-lord of the Keepers. He's been trained since birth to rule. True to his title, he is a fair judge, and is thought to be shaping up to be a good ruler. However, he has only recently won his title, and he is eager to prove himself on the battlefield as well as in the meeting room. He can be a little naive about how things work out in the world, and is startled when things don't always follow the set rules. Kind, and generous, but can be a bit full of himself. Showoff/Flirty. (Attractiveness Isolation)

Cade (The Seeker) The contrast to the main character. Possible corner of that triangle I have to work in somehow. Also socially awkward, but not in the nice way. Rude, with little internal filter. Native of the Shadow World. Cleric type. Intellectual. Male, mid-20s. (Combat Medic)

Errant

Thanos (The General) looked into the void and it changed him. Battle was now less about honor and more about the body count. While his methods aren't seen as honorable, he has never outright broken the law. He joined Anestia for a chance to wipe out all of the Keepers, and end the Continuity wars, victorious. He is an expert strategist as well as a capable fighter. (Skeleton in the Coat Closet)

Pointer That Guy

Orion (The Fixer) is a walker that entered the SDW 10 years ago. He was a healer in his original dimension and continues the practice in the SDW. He doesn't particularly like what Anestia is doing, but stays because he feels he needs to care for the Errant, who took him in when Orion arrived. Late 40's.

Misc

The Dwelian Tome A big book with a big mouth. Cheerful, upbeat, and unfortunately the biggest source of easily accessable information in the SDW. DT has been stored in the Tower of Baeloc for the past couple of centuries, and is extremely pleased to be around others again.(Talking Appliance Sidekick, The Pollyanna)

Marcum(m) and Calum(f) Twins, native to the SDW. Tricksters. They have ties to the Revalis Corporation but are generally vague about it. In reality they are the owners of said corporation and are being vague because they do not wish to be perceived as having picked a side in the ongoing conflict. Slight in stature, appear as teenagers. They are two very technology minded people in a fantasy world. Black hair, bright green eyes. (Half Identical Twins, Born in the Wrong Century)

Lana(The Huntress)Her title is an unnofficial titles granted to her by her clan. She joins the group as a guide through the Sirillus Wasteland. Early 20s, extremely fit, very capable at surviving outdoors. Warrior/tracker type. Heir to the nomadic Telor Clan. (Everyone Remembers the Stripper)

The Seer The neutral side of the "holy" trinity. Shrouded by mystery, it's said to have been 100 years since any mortal inhabitant of the SDW has laid eyes on her. She's said to appear as a beautiful young woman. Her last known residence is the Tower of Baeloc.

The Keeper The "good" side of the "holy" trinity. One of the first inhabitants of the SDW that came from Prime. Not what someone would generally expect as the avatar of "good." He's messy, unorganized, and generally a bit of an a**. It's all in good fun though. His status is currently unknown and is thought to be dead.

The Errant The "bad" side of the "holy" trinity. One of the first inhabitants of the SDW, also from Prime. He's the calmer of the two aspects, generally well dressed, also with a sharp tongue. His status is widely unknown and is thought dead, though Anestia knows otherwise. Tall, thin, with an aristicratic bearing.

I said this was the actual outline portion, but it's pretty much a vague overview of the outline portion. Start big! Figure out the details later. Huzzah.

The Actual Outline Portion of this Thread

Part One- The Introduction Here's where we meet MC. We get a nice little taste of her oh so normal life, her family, her BFF. This is all a big load of exposition. Some nerdy reference maybe. Nothing huge other than letting you get to know MC before the big life altering SOMETHING that eventually happens. Speaking of something, at the end of this little portion something sucks MC and maybe the BFF too into the Shal-Doewelt. I think that looks better without the 'e' Does that look better without the e?

Part Two- Discovery MC wakes up in a new world and is promptly arrested and put on trial because her eyes are blue. BFF is in jail as well. Both are suspected of being Errant. Cryptic Old Man intervenes on behalf of MC, and MC begs for BFF. Both are free'd on account of some prophecy thing of a blue eyed stranger that will be the turning point in the world and help the multiverse find balance. This portion is more exposition as Cryptic Old Man explains to MC and BFF the world that they're in and we meet some more characters. Maybe the Foil and the Love Interest.

Random Note: They think MC is male. No one corrects them.

Part Three- Call to Arms Messenger pops up stating that The Big Bag has stolen Generic Relic 42. Cryptic Old man refers back to the prophecy, Note to self: Write some shiny prose, finding a list of relics that when put together can tear great big holes in the Zypherious Membrane that won't close again. This is generally thought to be a bad thing and Cryptic Old Man equips MC and BFF with weapons they have no idea how to use then gathers the best and the brightest to go with them to gather the remaining relics so Big Bad can't get them all.

Part Four- The Journey This is the main part of the story and if I can put enough in here maybe I'll get multiple novels out of this. Likely I won't. Pretty much everything important except the final battle happens here, and I don't know what all of that is yet, but it involves a lot of character development, and budding romance, and awkwardness and finding one's self. All good stuff.

+They narrowly miss being able to get to all the relics except for one. The Pendant that is gifted to MC by the Seer. They are unaware that this pendant is actually the relic until it's revealed by the Big Bad. Seer is suitably cryptic about the whole thing with things like, "When you learn to see you will find you already had what it is you seek." and whatnot.

Part Five- The ShowdownSo here's the big showdown between MC and the Big Bad. Evil looks like it's going to triumph for a bit before MC flashes back to all the things she's learned on her journey and has the great Epiphany, and unlocks the secret to controlling the personal Space/Time aspect of the Shal-Doewelt. Badassery happens, and though beaten and whatnot the heroes emerge victorious!

Part Six- Resolution Tying up any loose ends here. Unclear at the moment how long MC is going to spend in the SDW (Few more years? Long enough to marry whatever love interest wins the coin toss maybe. Def long enough to actually establish a life.) SDW seems more like home than "real world".

Part Seven- The Parting The point that whether by choice or force MC wakes back up, and thinks the entire damn thing was a dream. We see her attempt to fit back into her normal life and be really affected by the "dream" and whatnot. This is all well and good of course until she meets The One (whichever love interest won the coin toss) in the Real World and screen fades to black.

THE END

Sooo this post is full of random information. Basically what I hope to do is take things from the Stuff post and work it in here. Going to work is apparently great for my creative process.

Details Details Details

Places

Annalis The Keeper's Territory's Capitol city. (Think Minas Tirith type Architecture. The largest number of the city's inhabitants are military in nature. The city is build in the side of a mountain with four "rings."

From bottom to top:

1) The largest ring is the common sector/Garrison
2) Market/Trade district
3) Noble/higher class section- This is also the section where things such as the hospital are located.
4) Governmental/royalty

Deconstructed Zone the outer edge of the SDW. Floating rocks and whatnot, uninhabitable.

Dimensions

Shal-Doewelt the name I'm giving the Shadow world. Shal-Doe being "Shadow" and Welt: a doubled edge, strip, insert, or seam (as on a garment) for ornament or reinforcement. Sooo the Shal-Doewelt is essentially a "buffer" realm between worlds/dimensions that keeps them from colliding.
-"The Place that Is"
-for the most part, color does not exist in this world. In extremely rare cases the color blue can be seen. This is generally taken the as a sign of some great apocalyptic event or whatnot.
-time is absolutely relative (yeah wrap your mind around those two words put together). This means that for one person in teh Shal-Doewelt an event may happen in two minutes, for another two years. Mastering the time flow, however is extremely difficult, and most inhabitants follow a normal pattern set by The Timekeeper.

-History Lesson
+SDW was just a void until the Keeper and the Errant came from Prime. They molded the land to their will.
+Eventually their visions for the SDW no longer meshed and the Continuity War began, each gathering their own army to fight.
+The writings of the original Keeper were bound and given to the care of Baeloc.

Di-Vel Worlds The actual dimensions and alternate dimensions and alternate alternate dimensions and so forth. Think kind of like plant cells. A self contained little universe with the Shal-Doewelt between it and the next cell keeping things nice and separate. These can be mapped on the Ova-Dimensional Grid.

Prime The first world, holding the 0,0 coordinate on the Ova-Dimensional Grid. This is the dimension that all first generation Di-Vel Worlds came from. Our reality is NOT Prime. (City Planet)

Peoples

Relavis Corporation Maker of the PETS and other fine devices that make use of Drearon Energy. Founded by the twins, Marcum and Calum, the Corporation is responsible for bringing technology into an otherwise standard Fantasy world. The corporation claims neutrality in all conflicts between the Keepers and the Errant as their technology is available to all, without bias.

Walker Someone that enters the Shal-Doewelt from a Di-Vel world.

Dreavian the humanoid race born in the Shal-Doewelt. They are pretty much human, though a small percent of the population is born with the ability to manipulate Drearon Energy.
-a war-glorifying culture
-women generally do not hold positions of power
-upon passing their trials, males are given a unique title that takes place of their name
+title has no bearing on military or social rank aside from the fact that having one boosts status. It is personal, said to be a description of one's soul
+There have been 12 titled Women
+The only living titled woman is the Seer

-Religion: Being a war based civilization, their gods glorify war as well.
-they believe that when you die there is no afterlife so to speak, but your soul is measured. Depending on the result you Ascend or Descend to the next plane. When you Ascend it is to a more glorious life (Say, if you died a foot-soldier, you'd be reborn a general) and if you Descend it's to a less glorious life, where you have the chance to prove yourself worthy of Ascension (Foot soldier dies and comes back a blacksmith).(Warrior Heaven)

The Keepers Followers of the Keeper. They are ruled by the descendants of the Keeper (general royal line). However, the last heir went missing a decade ago during a skirmish with the Errant, so they are currently ruled by a reagent lord.

+All male Keepers of age go through their rite of passage in the Chamber of Destiny. Think the cave on Dagobah. They spend a night within the chamber, and upon surviving leave with their title. The rite is different for everyone, and most chose not to speak of what they witnessed in the chamber when it's over. The ordeal is deeply personal.

The Errant Followers of the Errant. They are currently ruled by a group of Warlords that form a council.

+All male Errant of age also go through a rite of passage. Their version however is a trip to the Deconstructed Zone where they look out into the void in meditation. Those that survive with their mind intact are granted their title. If asked, most cannot describe what it is they see in the void.

Things

PETS - Personal Extradimensional Transport System. This is a small world hopper that allows a person to leave the Shal-Doewelt for two hours as a shadow. It works by punching a hole in the Zyhperious Membrane, and returning you through that same hole. It can only punch a hole from the Shal-Doewelt, so if you do not return before the two hours is up, you become stuck in the world as a shadow until a new hole is opened. Made by the Relavis Copropration. (Ride the Lightning)

Zypherious Membrane This tangible substance serves as the boundary between the Shal-Doewelt and other worlds/dimensions. It is only tangible when one is in the Shal-Doewelt, however. Has almost a jello like consistency.

Drearon Energy The "electricity" of the Shal-Doewelt. It is gathered and stored in crystals. Select few in the world know that this energy is given off from the dreams of people in Di-Vel Worlds. Yes, the Shal-Doewelt runs on dreams.

The Five Relics of Borian Five relics come together to form the device that rips holes in the Membrane: Pendant, Trident, Focus, Shaft, Source. Borian was another early dweller of the SDW, who along with the Errant and the Keeper attempted to find a way back to Prime. The result was a polearm with the capability of tearing a hole in the ZyMem, allowing travel through. The problem with this is they didn't know where to tear the hole to get back to their dimension.

While they attempted to find the location, for safe keeping they split the polearm into five pieces, and intrusted each piece to a different family. Later, when the Continuity Wars began the pieces became scattered and hard to track. Using historical records, the Revalis Corp attempted to make another device. However, through testing the ZyMem, they discovered that a hole of that size would rip the SDW apart and in all likelyhood lead to the collapse of the Ova-Dimensional Grid and the project was scrapped.

Because of this new information both sides of the raging conflict have been searching for the pieces of the original device.

Major Events

Continuity Wars The Keepers and The Errant have been at war since the first Di-Vel world split off from Prime and the Shal-Doewelt was formed. This has been going on for a few billion years or so. The origins of this war have been so convoluted over the years that no one really knows why the war is being waged. Children are taught from birth on both sides that the otherside is wrong and it is their duty to fight.(The World is Always Doomed)

I'm not sure whether you welcome comments or not but I think your story is shaping up to something interesting.

I thought about using tropes in my own story too, it's pretty planned out in regards to how everything generally happens, though I could still maybe use a few. Food for thought :3
PostPosted: Sun Oct 09, 2011 12:18 pm

Comments are certainly welcome! (I've been at a con all weekend and this is the first time I've had computer access to reply). And here's hoping it's interesting, otherwise I'll never finish it!

I'm really liking the trope thing so far. If I need inspiration I can just glance at the list and pick one to specifically work in. That's generally enough to get the creativity flowing again. I think a few of them were things that would likely have ended up in my writing even if I didn't have a list, haha. They're called tropes for a reason!

Okay so the entire Vague plot outline is down. Really vague, but it's better than nothing. I have a reaaaaaaaally zoomed out map. My plan for the rest of this week is to really nail down the characters, give them names, looks, etc. My writing is generally very character driven (I think that comes from years of RP) so I really want to spend some time on this and get them worked out.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 17, 2011 7:59 pm

Achieved what I wanted to last week, for the most part. Still some details to iron out.

*The Unexpected Successor- I have this narrowed down to either Rafe or Orion, need to cement that down, but it's not priority one.

This week's goal is to go through the outline and get a little more specific. Particularly The Journey section since that's the meat. I can totally do this and not get distracted.

Oh, and to anyone that might be lurking about. I worry that I'm getting too complex/have too much random information. Does it seem like it's getting out of hand at all?

With a few hours to go, time to close out this thread. I didn't get quite as far as I wanted, but even if they're not posted here, I've got 16 chapters of road map for the journey that's incoming.

Thank you mods for setting this outline thing up. It turned out to be a really good think space/organizational tool for me. Getting a little bit of insight into other posters' creative processes was fun too. I can't wait to get started on this next bit. See you all in the story post section!
