“Oh, Ah… no, no that’s ok!” He shook his head. “It’s not, I mean, I’m really not very good with hats.” He said stammering, half apology. “I was just, imagining… I was just imagining you with a hat to go with that jacket.” He admitted. “Bright…green I mean.” He said glancing away.

“I’d just misplace a hat if I had one, not that I’d intend to…but I’m afraid I would.”

"Either way, my dear Gabriel, you are going to try one on." And with that most decisively stated, Paul hauled him along down the street -- his hand tucked into Gabriel's elbow so that he couldn't retreat away.

At least the shop wasn't far, and at least it was mostly empty, except for one woman milling around the edges of some beflowered creations bigger than most cats. Paul bowed to her with a roguish, not-entirely-polite flash of a smile that didn't reach his eyes, and then settled in front of more masculine selections.

"We should kill the half hour, at least, I'd say. Wouldn't you?" He held out a comfortable straw creation that would, if nothing else, sit lighly on Gabriel's head.

“Ah, certainly.” He said not sure what else to say, he felt a bit lost about if they should or shouldn’t be killing an entire half hour, at least doing so on something as oddly trivial as, well, hats. He took the straw creation gingerly as though he were afraid that he might either suddenly find that his hands were still covered in ink and that he would then smear it all over the weave by accident, or as though he might accidently crush the hat before carefully, stutteringly placing the hat on his head to demonstrate that he had in fact tried on a hat… regardless of his personal reservations on the matter.

After all, his personal reservations were quickly being stampeded by his insecurities.
“Erm…” He hemmed after pulling his hands carefully away like he also expected the hat to behave not unlike a live animal and spring away. “Well?” He asked seeking earnestly for an opinion.

"Practical, efficient, simple --" These were all things that could have been compliments, that someone else might have taken as an excellent reason to purchase the thing. Coming out of Paul's mouth, however, they held a sour note, they bordered on disgust. A hat, to him, wasn't something one bought for practical purposes. And using such adjectives mostly just meant that it had nothing else going on.

He snatched it immediately off of Gabriel's head and launched into a series of more exciting finds; top hats and bowlers and whatever else came to mind, judging them all with too-serious eyes before settling on a somewhat wide-brimmed flat-topped creation that he thought suited.

The price tag probably would not.

"Definitely the best fit."

A glance at the price tag made poor Gabriel’s eyes widen before he ever so gently restored the handsome ‘well fitted’ hat to its former location. “It is a VERY nice hat, however I really can’t justify giving it such a poor home. I’m sure that the gentleman who runs this fine establishment would prefer it go to a more…plush accommodations.” He couldn’t believe that a hat could cost quite so much.

“Ah… so we have located a fine looking hat which of course needs a far better home than I can offer. Should we move on?”

"Move on to what? This is the hat." Paul's expression was shockingly serious, genuinely confused -- apparently he had already forgotten that this was a side trip, that he was wandering with Gabriel and that this hadn't been their ultimate goal. He nabbed the hat again and placed it neatly on his friend's head, already filtering through his purse.

"If you don't have it on you, I'll take care for now, we can just take it from what's owed..." Careless, casual, Paul didn't actually have enough either -- but they'd take his letter of credit, at least. And he moved away to do so before Gabriel could protest.
