 Pua was with Reid in the backyard of their home. It was late afternoon and a Saturday. So Reid could go to sleep a little later today and play a little longer with her. His parents had gone out to dinner and left her in charge of him. She knew that he would listen to her whatever she told him. Her service dog uniform was in the house since they were not planning on going anywhere. He would put his hand on her head should she need to lead him anywhere.
It was a nice, clear day. Pua watched the birds flying overhead as Reid listened to some kind of game on the little machine they called a radio. She kept her head by his shoulder in case he needed her for any reason. It was then that the unthinkable happened. A masked man ran into their yard. Pua went into attack mode but before she could leap at him, he had Reid in front of him and something black that she knew could seriously hurt both her and her human.
In a panic, she started to yell for help, her barks loud and frantic. "Help! Anyone! Please! My human is in trouble!" The man was now yelling at her and pointing the black thing at Reid's head. She quickly shut up and hoped someone has heard her.

 Paxx was on his way home from a busy day at work. He had been assigned to a robbery investigation, and had been working diligently all day, but hadn't found or caught the culprit. He was ready to go home and find a nice juicy bone to lie down with and fall asleep.
He turned a corner onto his street and yawned, happy that his home was only a few houses away. It was then that his ears perked, alert to the cries of help from a nearby dog. Instantly forgetting his fatigue, Paxx jumped into action. He sped towards the sounds of barking, and a human yelling at the dog. Other dogs might run away, but it was Paxx's job to come to the aid of those in trouble.
He arrived on the scene at a house where a masked man stood holding a young male child, a weapon. The masked man was shaking the weapon at the frantic dog, and then pointed it at the child. Paxx knew the situation. He had been trained for this. He had to be careful not to alarm the assailant into harming his hostage, but had to act quickly at the same time.
He approached slowly, staying behind the man. He tried catching the other dog's eye to warn her to stay calm and quiet, but wasn't sure she could see him past the danger so close at hand.

Pua had to work to keep herself calm. She was starting to breathe quite heavily, worry causing her to forget how to breathe properly. Her chest heaved with the effort to hold herself back so she wouldn't worsen the situation. Oh please, send someone to help us! Her thoughts could not help them but she hoped with all her might they would be heard. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if Reid got hurt or worse. No, she didn't even want to think what worse would mean.
All her training in helping a disabled human did not prepare her for this. She was not trained in disarming a human. She was also not trained in attacking or fighting. Pua had no idea what to do. Poor Reid looked so frightened. He couldn't see what was going on and was now crying.
It was then that a blue movement caught her eye. She glanced but only briefly behind the man holding Reid. It was another dog. Her attention for now was solely focused on the human that held Reid's life in his hands. She was afraid to move. Hopefully the blue dog would help them.

He saw the other dog glance his way for just a second and then revert her eyes back to the boy. She must be the boy's dog, he thought.
Paxx crept closer, as silent as possible. He could smell the stench of sweat from the masked man, and fear from the boy. He was right behind the human now. This was what he had trained for. This was the moment to put his training to work.
He let out a low growl loud enough for the man in front of him to hear. He quickly jumped to the left to evade any retaliation that might come from him. As if on cue, the masked man turned, still holding the boy to his right looking for what had made the noise. This gave Paxx the opportunity to jump up and bite the man's wrist that was holding the weapon. He immediately opened his hand, dropping the weapon to the ground, flinching back with his hand. Paxx had sunk his teeth into the flesh as hard as he could. Blood from the man filled his mouth. He let go as he pulled his arm back, giving Paxx the opening he was after. Paxx then jumped at the man's exposed chest, aiming his teeth at his throat. The man let go of the boy, and focused on protecting himself now. Paxx pushed hard with his hind legs, putting all the force in his body into trying to topple the man to the ground. As he did so, he was snapping and growling in the man's face. It wasn't the boy's fear that he could smell now.

Pua really had no idea what the other dog was planning to do. So when he attacked the man so effortlessly, she was in shock and almost frozen in place. There was so little time to react. It happened so fast. The sound of Reid crying her name pulled her back and she immediately went to him. He couldn't see what was happening which she was for once happy for. She pushed him away from the struggling man as fast as she could. When he was to the back door that led into their house and opened the door for him. As soon as he was safe inside, she nudged at his knees to tell him to sit down. "I'll be back Reid. Your safe now thanks to that dog out there. I have to thank him," she told him. He would stay there and wait for her. Thanks to all the training that they had gone through, she could communicate what she wanted him to do.
Pua closed the door behind her as she went back out into the yard. The dog had the man on the ground and the man was clearly scared. She had no idea what to do though. How would they alert the humans of this masked man?

Paxx kept a good hold on the man, his weight pinning him to the ground. He watched the boy and other dog move into the house and the dog emerge. "Go get help," he said to her in a very direct tone. "We need the humans to capture him. Hurry. I'll try to keep him pinned down."
He turned his attention back to the burglar, growling and snapping at the man's face to keep him scared.

Pua was so overwhelmed with relief that it took the other dog telling her to get help to make her realize that it wasn't over. "I will!" She ran over to the neighbors. They would help her because they knew that she was Reid's service dog. She ran up to the door and started scratching at it. "Help, help!" She was barking frantically to alert them to the danger. It didn't take long for one of the neighboring humans to open the door.
She ran back towards the yard so that they would follow her, checking behind to make sure they were following. As soon as the man saw the criminal on the ground, pinned under the other dog, he reached for his device that they used to talk to each other. Shortly after there was the sound of sirens as the police came. Pua had to let out a sigh of relief. Now Reid was definitely safe.

While the other dog went for help, Paxx struggled to keep the man pinned down. He had began wrestling with Paxx, trying to throw him off, but Paxx was stronger.
He heard the approach of the humans, and soon after the sirens that meant the police would be there soon. His human partner was the first to arrive, and as per his training, Paxx relinquished control of the man to the human. The officer had the man in cuffs and another officer took him to the police car. While other officers went to speak to the humans and the boy who had been captive, Paxx's partner came over to inspect him and praise him for a job well done. Paxx stood proud and wagged his little tail, happy to have done his job and helped the boy and other dog out of such a terrible situation.
When his partner went to speak to the humans, Paxx went to speak to the other dog. "I hope neither you nor your human were harmed." Paxx looked over to the cop car where the criminal was contained. He was glaring through the window at the two dogs. "It looks like you won't have to worry about him anymore." He looked back to the dog. "I'm very glad I was in the vicinity so I was able to help."

Pua had to go check on Reid so that he wouldn't worry about her. He was already feeling around the ground looking for her when she went back inside. She quickly pushed her head against one of his seeking hands to reassure him. Gently, she pushed him onto his butt so that he would sit and stay. He would know to wait for her now.
She went back outside and was not that shocked to discover that the dog that had rescued them had been a police dog. No wonder he knew how to handle the situation. Pua had no idea how to repay him for everything.
"I could never thank you enough. My human doesn't seem hurt and the man didn't hurt me. My name is Pua. Is there any way I could ever repay you?" Perhaps she could give him some of the treats she had in the house. Something, anything, he had just saved Reid and there was nothing in the world she wouldn't do to thank him.

Paxx smiled at Pua. "I was only doing my job. I'm glad he's okay, and you as well. Those situations do get pretty crazy."
Now that all the excitement had died down, Paxx found himself exhausted. All the adrenaline that had coursed through him during the confrontation had zapped his body of what energy he'd had left after a busy day at work.
"I think it's time for this old dog to get home and rest. I stashed a nice bone yesterday that's calling my name now." He nodded to the female and walked towards the curb. "I'll come by tomorrow to check on you. Everything should be fine tonight."

Pua nodded as he walked away to go back to his own home. She would repay him somehow. One day, there will be something she can do for him. "Thank you again. I hope you have a good rest." There wasn't much else to say really. She was almost at a loss for words. He didn't even expect anything in return. Just doing his job is what he said.
She called out before he disappeared from view, "See you tomorrow!" Oh wait, she hadn't gotten his name. Pua opened her muzzle to ask him but he was already gone. She would just have to wait till tomorrow.
