 Hunter stretched his legs out in front and relished in the after thoughts of a great dream. He had been on the prowl, running after a rabbit when a noise had woken him from his slumber. It was his human leaving in his truck. That thing was so noisy that nothing could sleep when it was running. He raised his head off his paws and watched as the truck drove away, probably heading into town for supplies. Usually Hunter went with his human, but he guessed that since he was asleep, the farmer had just gone on without him.
"No matter," Hunter thought. "I'll just go back to sleep and try to pick up where I left off." He stood, turned a complete circle, and stretched his body and legs before lying back down on the front porch. It was his favorite spot to nap in the afternoons.
Just as Hunter was dozing off, another noise woke him. "What now?" he thought, frustrated at being woken twice in one nap. He opened his eyes and sniffed the air. A strange new scent was on the breeze. The hair on his back bristled. There was an intruder in his territory. He wouldn't stand for that. He quickly got to his feet and stood at attention, ready to protect his home at any second.

She stopped, turning and standing onto her hind legs to see the area she already covered since she left through the doggy door made for her. Her temporary house was quite some distance back and she hoped that she could make it back without getting lost. After a few moments, the little spaniel returned to all fours, having losing balance and hearing an odd noise.
"What is that?" She questioned as she looked in the direction the noise came from. Trotting toward the noise, she soon saw a truck pulling away from a house, causing a loud ruckus. She got a curious look on her face as she moved forward, seeing the tall grass slowly start to disperse, obviously trimmed to make room for a fence and the expanse of farm that she caught sight of as she emerged from the grass. She moved to the fence and sniffed at it before peeking over a slat in it. Her sea green eyes looked over the lovely farmhouse that the truck had left from. She smiled at the sight, but something else caught her attention. Standing on the porch, was that? It seemed to be a bright colored dog. Her head tilted some and hoped that it was alright to be at the fence

He bounded down the steps, sniffing the air again to lead him towards the stranger. He followed the scent to the edge of the yard where the fence that surrounded it began. There stood a small grey and white dog staring back at him.
Hunter's hackles raised and a growl started in his throat. "You might want to keep moving bub. This is my territory."
((He always puts up a gruff exterior. If she explains she is no threat, he will back down. wink ))

She watched as what she believed was a dog jumped down the stairs and wound its way toward her. Sure enough, as the figure got closer to her location, she was more certain it was a fellow canine. But, as the other got closer, she got more nervous. Soon she backed away from the fence as the multi-colored dog was now pretty much ontop of her.
When the larger dog started to growl at her, posing the threat, she let out a soft whimper, tucking her tail between her legs. "I-I'm sorry... I did not know. I-I didn't mean any harm, I was just looking at your pretty home."

Obviously Hunter had scared the little dog. This made him feel bad now that he realized it didn't pose a threat. He relaxed and smiled at the newcomer. "Okay, calm down. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." he paused a second. "Well, I guess I did, but I had to make sure you weren't a threat. Does that make sense?"
He backed up from the spaniel, and gave her a once over. "Now that I get a good look at you, I can see that you're too small to really pose a threat towards me. No offense, mind you. I just mean that you're just oozing with cuteness. How could you be? A threat..that is."
He was stumbling over his own words now. He took in a deep breath and exhaled. "What I'm trying to say is... "I'm sorry, and I hope we can can start over on the right paw. I'm Hunter. This is my master's farm. What brings you here?"

Charlamagne looked up to him as a smile formed on his face and her tail slowly began to slip out from between her legs. She tilted her head to listen better as he bumbled over his apology and his reasoning for being so 'aggressive' in the first place. When he mentioned she was 'oozing with cuteness', she couldn't help but blush a little, despite knowing that it wasn't meant to.
When he finally seemed to be able to get his apology out, her tail wagged softly. "It's quite alright, I understand that you were just trying to protect your home." She smiled softly at him, "it's nice to meet you Hunter, I'm Charlamagne. I'm just taking my daily stroll. My trainer lets me have free reign to come and go from the house as long as I'm back by a certain time."

"So you must be from the city then. I don't go there much. I like the open fields and big endless skies. I have to go into town with the human sometimes, but I stay in the truck unless I just have to get out. I don't like it there. Nope." he shook his head for emphasis.
He paused a second to consider her. "Yeah, I do have to protect this place, and keep out all the rif-raff. You know, make sure no bandits come to steal anything or wild dogs or other animals try and eat the chickens. I'm good at my job." He beamed with pride about himself.
"Do you want to come over and sit on the porch? It's my favorite spot for an afternoon nap. I think I might have an extra bone around you could have if you're hungry. And there's a big water bucket next to the steps if you're thirsty." He wagged his tail, happy that this little dog wasn't a threat he'd have to chase off.

She nodded softly. "Yes, I had to go some distance to get here. Usually I go to the park, but I felt like going somewhere new today." She explained with a smile. She listened as he told her his dislike of the city and just giggled.
When he explained his job here on the farm she got a fearful, yet interested look on her face. "Oh my, it sounds so rough though. What if there a too many? Don't you ever get overrun?" She asked, suddenly concerned for the larger dog's safety, especially after being told of bandits and wild dogs.
At his offer to come to the porch with him, she tilted her head. "Would that be alright with your owner? I don't want you to get in trouble."

"The park isn't bad. I don't mind going there, though it's been a long while since I've been." He paused a second and thought about her question. "Nah. It's never been that bad. Usually just a raccoon here, a stray dog there. Never any real threats. There was a coyote once. That was a little scary, but it was just as scared of me as I was of it. I haven't seen it back here since then."
"C'mon up. The master won't be home for a while. Besides, if he does come back, we can always run off the side there and hide til the coast is clear. It'll be fine. Come on." He turned and pranced towards the porch, sniffing the ground for that bone he'd promised. He found it lying near his doghouse, which was next to the porch. He picked it up and walked up the steps and dropped it there, waiting for her to join him.

"You should get your master to take you to the park more often." She paused at a thought before adding, "unless you have more important chores to do. I don't want you to get into any trouble because of my suggestion." When he mentioned a coyote appearing, her eyes widened. She had never seen any sort of wild predator from outside the safety of her foster home. "That must have been some sort of experience for you. It's a good thing nothing bad happened in the encounter."
When he assured her that it would be okay to join him on his porch, she looked over to the house. Before she could question any further, he had already turned and made his way back. She watched as he searched for something, before picking it up and dropping onto the porch. The small dog was still a little hesitant as he turned to wait for her, but soon enough, she walked passed the fence and headed his way. "I-I hope you're sure about this."
