Sara sighed happily as she gazed around the meadow before her- it was beautiful. The sound of the wind through the grass, the soft flutter of butterfly wings... it was a symphony of sounds that no one ever stopped to listen to. As the music filled her heart, she felt her chest swell and a soft, sweet melody slipped from her lips. She paced forward until she was in the middle of it all and sang a song about the breeze through the willow's leaves, about adventure, about love. She sang until the birds joined in, flitting about her magnificent blue wings... she always felt the most like herself when she was alone. At least the birds and the butterflies did not judge her for how ugly she was...

Nike couldn't help but drift in the warm summer sun. It was entirely too hot for her tastes, but hopefully the summer would pass soon. Even Atlas, slung over the growling yearling's back, was panting for the heat. It was enough for the little hind to think about a dip in the pond, before tossing off the idea as too gross. Just the idea of pond mud between her toes was enough to make her little nose wrinkle. It was then that her ears pricked at the sound of a beautiful melody, something like she had never heard before. Gingerly, as if too loud of a footstep would break the wondrous spell, she followed the sound.

Even through her damaged eyes, the yearling could easily see how beautiful the hind was. Beautiful, flowing blue wings, such a serene voice... The yearling only realized she was but a few feet from the hind when Atlas, so equally enraptured in the sound, almost ell off of her shoulders for reaching out at the pretty hind. The two sat but a few feet away, the chibin enraptured as the yearling stood, ever polite and postured, positively enraptured by the song.

The song continued, carelessly and serenely. This was not a very well well-traveled area, so the blue-winged hind thought herself to be quite alone. Without a care in the world, Sara laughed, a soft, tinkling sound, as a butterfly landed on her nose. She sang to it softly, until it fluttered off and behind her. Turning to keep it in view, she started in surprise as she finally laid eyes on a yearling who seemed to appear from no where. After blinking for a few moments, to make sure the little hind was real, Sara did what she did best... she panicked.

"Oh... oh dear! I... I'm so sorry... w... was I disturbing you...?" she stuttered and flopped into the grass, her wings snapping up and around her face to protect the little one from her ugliness. "I... I didn't kn... know anyone w... was around... I h... hope I... didn't bother you..." Sara hadn't gotten a good look at the little hind, but from what she had seen, she was beautiful. Much more beautiful that Sara could ever hope to be... and she had been watching Sara. Could she not believe that someone could be so ugly? Was that why she had been staring? Sara couldn't blame her... it was not often that one came upon a hind as hideous as herself.

Nike could only watch in shock as the beautiful hind unceremoniously flopped to the ground, her wings clamped about her face. The yearling could do little more than watch with a skeptical expression as a rather jumbled string of words crowded forth. The little hind gave a shake of the head, this was certainly not how an adult was to conduct themselves, especially not one so beautiful as this. Even Atlas seemed overwhelmed by the older hind's tizzy as he rushed forth to set the wonderful blue feathers back in their proper places. The yearling watched him for a moment, wondering whether or not she should call him back to her, but decided against it.

The older hind might have completely forgotten her grace, but Nike refused to. The little hind straightened her posture before closing most of the distance between herself and the older hind. Nike couldn't help but eye the beautiful blue cerulean wings, snapped shut around the beautiful face. The yearling seemed to completely disregard the stuttered questions. Really, she ought to learn to enunciate properly, and think through what you would like to say before saying it. "Your singing was beautiful," She only half spoke the words, as if they weren't what was really on her mind. "But why do you hide yourself?"There was a child's demanding to her words, expecting an answer. The yearling restrained herself from peeking around the blue wings as other rude children might, though even she would admit the temptation was there.

((The Great Lady is Giratina... ^_^; Just so you know... ))

Sara began to shiver as the little chibin began to rearrange her feathers, her voice coming out with a fearful quaver, "Sh... shoo little ch... chibin..." Was he wondering how anyone could have such ugly feathers? Did he want to pluck them and collect them to show all his laughing friends proof that ugliness does exist in the world? True, the Great Lady thought her wings to be acceptable, as well as her singing... but not everyone was as beautiful on the inside as the Great Lady was.

As the yearling stepped closer, Sara squeaked and shrank even further, if that was even possible. Her ears flicked back as she heard the pretty young hind begin to speak, expecting nothing but the worst... and blinked in surprise. "B... beautiful? O... oh dear heavens, no. Perhaps y... you mean acceptable o... or mediocre," she whispered in awe, that such a random stranger would be so nice as to try and make her feel better as such... someone she didn't even know. Yes, this little yearling must be very beautiful on the inside as well. Shifting slightly, Sara continued quietly, "I.... I'm not hiding..." Maybe the little one would drop it and not inquire further as to why Sara shielded her face... the blue-winged hind worried that if this new acquaintance saw how ugly she was, that she would no longer want to be her friend. Yes, it was better for both of them if she stayed on the ground. "Y... you are very pretty..." she added softly, wanting the yearling to know how much she appreciated the kind words from earlier, even if they were a lie.

((Okiedoke, thanks ^^))
The yearling gave her chibin a stern glare, and the little creature stopped where he stood. Nike gave a slight pause before looking to the beautiful hind with a slight snort. "Please excuse Atlas. He only means well." As if on cue, the little creature scurried to her side, fidiging with the cuffs on her forelgs to smooth any wrinkles and keep things straightened. "...He can't stand to see things out of place." The little creature only chittered back at the yearling in an irritated tone before continuing his work. Nike turned her attention back to the hind. "No. I am rather positive I meant beautiful, not acceptable, or mediocer." She looked at the hind for a long moment, ever slightly puzzled. "And Yes, you are hiding." Nike fought the impulse to crane her neck this way and that in hopes of cathing a glimpse of the hind's face again. Such a gesture would be unseemly for someone of her calibur. The yearling's tail flicked irritatedly behind her, "Oh, now stop it, and come out from there. Really!"

You are very pretty... The statement was more than enough to catch the yearling off guard. Her mother was pretty. Her sister was pretty. The yearling flicked one ear back, and then the other in confusion. She was the daughter of two of the most beautiful hinds in the hartlands, perhaps it was possible that she could pass for 'pretty'... Nike ignored the comment, unsure of what to say. She would rather look coarse than stupid, or weak. "Don't change the subject, and come out of there! Such behavior, from an adult. Now really."

Sara nodded knowingly from behind her wings- this was more familiar to her. Of course the chibin didn't want her feathers, he wanted her to move, to be gone from such a beautiful place. Sighing she whispered sadly, "Y... yes... out o... of place. I... understand. I c... can see why he w... would think me to be o... out of place. I... in such a beautiful meadow... I must be m... marring his scenery..." She sat quietly and waited for the next insult, but it never came. Then there the little hind went again, throwing around the world "beautiful". It wasn't good of her, really, to be lying as she was... but perhaps she really was just trying to be nice.

As Nike continued to badger her about coming out from behind her wings, Sara simply became more and more resolute. She shook her head and shivered, this was much too much. "I'm s... sorry to be s... such a... bother. P... please, don't be angry... I... I'll leave i... if you w... want me to..." She couldn't understand why her hiding bothered the little hind so much- it was for her own good. Why should the poor dear have to look up something so ugly? Then suddenly, Sara realized she wouldn't be able to leave without uncovering herself... maybe that was why the little hind wanted her to move her wings, so that it would be easier for Sara to get away quickly... that was quite thoughtful of her! Even more proof that Nike was pretty on the inside too...

Nike could only stare at the hind dumbly for a moment, one ear straight up as the other gave a rather perpendicular flop to the side. She simply could not believe what she was hearing. Did the hind really think she was... ugly? The beautiful blue wings, and stunning eyes.. Nike's eyebrows knitted a sarcastic tone. "Marring the scenery, what sort of nonsense are you talking about?" The question seemed like more of a dismissal by tone, as the yearling rolled her eyes. The hind seemed to be grossly misinformed, at very least. "Atlas refuses to touch anything foul. But anything he finds beautiful he will arrange and clean until it is perfection." She gave her little friend a brief nuzzle, doing her best from displaying any inappropriate amount of affection in front of this new hind.

"Do you really think so lowly of yourself that you refuse to show me your face?" The yearling's tone was flat, and factual. Her cat's eyes watching the hind, wondering what sort of reaction she would bring.

Sara whimpered quietly as Nike's tone turned sarcastic and harsh- had she said something wrong? "I... apologize for t... talking nonsense..." was all she could muster for an answer. She was confused about the other part... arranging things to perfection? The chibin would have to work for a very long time to make anything perfect, let alone Sara. But the hind said he only worked on things he thought beautiful... perhaps the Great Lady was right? Perhaps her wings weren't quite as abhorring as the rest of her was.

"O... oh, you don't have to b... be so nice. I know y... you are just trying to m... make me feel better. I understand. Y... you don't have to f... force yourself to look at me. I... I'm used to talking l... like this. Really...!" Sara tried to say earnestly, without so much quaver in her voice. This beautiful little hind obviously didn't mean her harm, she was just curious... and a little forceful with her niceness. Now that she thought back on it, Sara couldn't really remember what Nike looked like. Aside from the eyes... those captivating, cat-like eyes. The little one had been wearing a veil, but Sara could see through it and she had seen something unique and marvelous in those eyes. Sara was now getting curious herself, to see the rest of her new acquaintance, but she couldn't... she just couldn't subject the poor dear to such terror.

Again, her ears flopped in their perpendicular manner as the little yearling truly could not believe what she was hearing. "I am not trying to make you feel better." The yearling cut herself off with a sigh. This was entirely useless. All she was succeeding in was scaring the poor hind. It wasn't Nike's fault that the hind was so weak and easily frightened, and while part of the yearling was fed up with the entirety of the situation, she paused. Nike took a deep breath, her gold eyes closed to the world. She willed herself to be calm, and took a tentative step toward the hind. "I am only trying to tell you the truth." Her tone had gentled, subsiding into her usual polite voice, though something in her tone seemed pained. The yearling shook her head slowly. "I don't know how or why you seem to think of yourself the way you do, but I do feel the need to let you know that you have been grossly misinformed." The yearling took another step forward, pausing with her nose but an inch from the beautiful cobalt wings. She hesitated, unsure of herself for a fleeting moment. "...You may be naieve, and admittedly maybe even a tad stupid, but you are most positively--" The little hind began to push her nose through the clamped wings, "--not ugly."

Sara flinched at Nike's first response, the little one's voice seemed frustrated. Had she said something wrong again? It seemed like everything she did was wrong... Then Sara could hear the little hind moving and she began to shiver. Her mind shut down and her wings trembled as her imagination got the best of her. Was the little one leaving, or coming closer? She listened fearfully, her heart fluttering like a bird in her chest as silent tears began to pool in her eyes. The little one was definitely moving closer and closer and Sara couldn't sink any further into the ground. Eyes glistening with unshed tears, the blue-winged hind could scarcely understand why the little one had such a macabre curiosity to want to gaze upon her so badly... but... just as the little one finished calling her names, her nose came through Sara's feathers and bopped gently against Sara's own, so that all the older hind could do was gasp, "Y... you... really don't think I'm u..... well... perhaps... pardon me for saying... perhaps you can't see through that veil very well..."

As her feathers parted and Sara sat there with her nose against Nike's, she smiled ever so slightly, though her eyes remained watery, "I honestly can't see why you wear that veil, little one... it makes seeing your magnificent eyes a tad bit difficult." Perhaps this wasn't so bad... it was like some sort of wall had been breached. Now Sara's wings relaxed slightly, brushing against Nike's face softly as they pulled away just a bit so as not to tickle the little hind's nose. "You really are very kind..."

The little yearling's intent gaze remained locked on the hind, but inwardly the little hind panicked. How Rude of her, Surely the blue winged hind would be furious-how..how.. Inapropriate--Oh Guardians Help Her... But then as the hind began to speak, for some strange reason she couldn't help but smile, but then... "perhaps you can't see through that veil very well..." Almost immediately, Nike seemed to recoil from the words in her subtle little ways. She straightened her posture, the smile leaving her eyes as her voice returned to its typical polite tone. "Well, it is not as if you really have any room to talk about it. Veil or no veil, I can see you. No matter how much better your eyes might be, that is still something you cannot do. Now Whose opinion should we trust here?" She had meant the words to be playful, but somehow they twisted themselves into blunt little words. The second they left her mouth, she immediately regretted them. Ever slightly her ears fell and her eyes fell to the ground. This hind wasn't like her family, she recoiled from such coarse words...

The little yearling closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, and releasing it slowly as the hind began to speak again. Magnificent? Her eyes had been called many things, like yellow, frightening, freakish and broken, but Magnificent? The second her eyes had been mentioned, Nike had been ready for it. The questions, the prodding. What's wrong with you's and endless jokes about being dropped into her thicket. -My- mothers -dropping- me? How absurd. Naturally she had stiffened, ready for whatever would be said, but magnificent had not been something she was prepared for. She looked up, expression a diluted mix of perplexity and apprehension as she studied the hind's face. Still, all she found were those startling seagreen eyes about to cry, and that beautiful smile. She was being honest. If this was the sort of panic she had caused the hind, perhaps she wasn't the weakling Nike had thought. The only thing she could liken it to was drowning, in a strangely wonderful way.

The tickle of those blue wings seemed to bring the little hind out of her thoughts as the older hind began to speak. A sly smile formed on the yearling's face, her eyes narrowing in a markedly feline pose. "And you really are very beautiful." She had truly never met someone so unintentionally infuriating and yet so honestly endearing and beautiful. Even without beautiful and finely made adornments, this hind had a true beauty to rival even Nike's Mothers. A subtle shock registered in the yearling's eyes, her emotions so naturally dilute and masked. A beauty to rival her mother's. Now there was a new thought.

Sara made a sad sound somewhere between a sigh and small cry as she realized that her statement must have hit a nerve. She hadn't meant to! It had only been an observation. Additionally, she really did wish to see the pretty little hind's eyes better... is this how other herla felt when she blocked herself from view with her wings? It wasn't a very nice feeling at all.

She watched the little hind go through various emotions, all culminating in a smile. It was rather cute, actually. And it was so hard to argue with her. No one had ever been so adamant before... there were some who tried to make her feel better about her ugliness, but they usually just stopped after a while and changed the subject. Many of them just agreed that she was beautiful on the inside, so it didn't matter what she looked like on the outside. Some of them... well... they were just brutally honest, which Sara didn't mind. It helped her from becoming deluded with dreams of grandeur. She appreciated the ones that reminded her that she was ugly, so that she didn't start lying to herself.

But Sara couldn't help feel better, the more this little hind spoke. It was hard to disagree with someone when they were saying you were something you had always wished to be. That's like someone telling a caterpillar that it was a butterfly... it wouldn't really want to disagree, even though deep down inside it knew it was only a caterpillar.

Sara finally moved her wings back, but not before gently brushing the little hind's cheek in gratitude. As she settled her wings behind her, Sara sighed, "You... really should not throw that word around... where someone as naive and stupid as me might start to believe you...." She blinked away the tears and smiled softly, whispering, "My name is Saraiyu... but... my friends call me Sara."

"It is nice to meet you, Sara." The yearling gave an ever slight curtsies, how could she have forgotten her manners so severely? Nike straightened her posture as Atlas quietly made his way back beside her, the little chibin delightedly munching a beetle he seemed to have caught. Had the yearling been less reserved she might have sighed, the little creature was so dear to her, but he had the attention span of a squirrel. She turned her attention back to Sara. "My name is Nike, Daughter of Barasuisho and Narscissa." The little hind's expression turned a dilute stern, some manner of playfulness subtly sparkling in her eyes. " And I do not throw the word around." She looked at Sara for a moment, wondering over her earlier thought.. She had never thought of anyone as an equal to her Mothers and their beauty, but there was something about this hind what was beyond a doubt, beautiful. It was not the harsh and perfect beauty that she was so well acquainted with... Sara was kind, and flawed, and easily frightened.. Things that should have marred her beauty seemed only to enhance it. "I have used it for exactly three hinds, thus far in my life." Her tone had turned matter-of-fact once more, an odd honesty to her tone.

Sara smiled brightly as Nike called her by her nickname, feeling that it meant the young hind considered her a friend. Friendship was such a beautiful thing- having someone like you for who you really are. Sara would do anything for her friends, even if it meant putting herself in harms way... though doing so would seem like a worthless sentiment because she could fight about as well as she could fly, which is to say, she can't.

"Ooh, it is very nice to meet you as well, Nike," she replied softly, sitting up a little so that they were eye level. She listened to the veiled youngster intently while quietly pondering as to what her eyes reminded her of. They were quite mesmerizing- how much emotion they held. Blinking, Sara tried not to giggle at the little one's assertion of how little she uses the word beautiful, not willing to ruin their new fun by continuing to be obstinate about a single silly word. Now that she knew Nike didn't want to make fun of her, Sara was more than willing to just have fun. Pondering curiously, Sara questioned with an innocent smile, "Hmmm... if you used it once for me, as silly as that may be, and once for yourself, who is the third?"
