As the sun had finally went away taking the unbearable summer heat with it, Karis had left her thicket hiding place to go fishing. She was almost at the water and trying to tighten a string on her paw. Oh yes. Surely at night, it'd be easier to catch with lesser ulaya around to disturb the fish. -ear twitch-
She paused looking out the corners of her eye. What was that? Nothing? Ok. She returned to making sure her fishing line was on there nice and well. Just as she was about to cast it into the water, her ears twitched again. It paused her fishing cast. She looked about a tad concerned. Was she losing it? Maybe the heat was playing tricks on her senses.

With the atmosphere radiating an intense heat throughout the land, most Ulayas found such whether quite unbearable. In order to past the time, one would have to engulf themselves in some kind of hobby. Anything to help ignore the intensity of the weather was better than griping about it. For Jiji, it was finding the the closest body of water and jumping in it.
As his intricate silver bell tinkered here and there with the motion of his body, it was clear this silly Ulaya could never sneak up on anyone. Not that the bell would really give his presence away. His black pelt backed by a dorky purple hat made him an easy target! Regardless, Jiji cheerfully kept his pace as he could see the beautiful, glimmering body of water was just a few minutes away.... That and some strange, grape colored female. A grape colored female? How strange! Oh well, at least he kinda matches his hat. Could be interesting? Inching towards the area, his tinkering bell made his approach obvious. But how would she react? What if she was one of those scary Ulayas?

Karis mussed up her face. Well.... She wasn't sure if that sound was real at all, and she felt a little silly and embarrassed to even admit to herself that she was hearing it... just in case it wasn't there at all. She told herself out loud, "Well now little girl.. these fish aren't gonna fish themselves in now, are they?"
Then, she threw her line in. About the same time the little tinkling sound which was hardly audible before grew louder. Oh no... Was this her imagination taking over? It was! Oh... but wait... What was that??? She swore she saw a little flicker of something white out in the peripherals. She was about to get up and walk around to see, but a fish caught her line. If she yanked her arm out, she'd lose her late dinner snack for real. Hmm... She then waited and fished her fish. After she was able to lure it in, she carried it in her mouth while she padded out to take a look around. Then, as she was looking around; the whites on the eyes gave it away. As her eyes looked at that spot better, she noticed those white etchings again. -ahhaaa.....-

Gasping at what he just saw, the poor fish never had a chance in her mouth. Maybe she was one of those hunting Ulaya. Those kind of Ulaya were always aggressive in his eyes. Wincing a bit, he started to turn around, not wanting to intrude on the grape hunter's plans. Suddenly, silly Jiji kept pacing back and forth disputing between interrupting the girl and then spending time near the water. It was a conflict upon his soul. With each step, his tinkering bell became more apparent. It wasn't exactly a smart action on his part.
Finally decided, he took a deep breath and trotted closer towards the girl. Inching closer he folded his ears back wearily, kept his tail lowered, eyes averted and kept close to the earth, trying to appear submissive in order to not provoke the female.

Karis then saw the ulaya approaching. her deep blue eyes looked trying to decipher what she could, but so far she couldn't tell anything. Not that was any kind of surprise, but she liked to try to convince herself she was magnificently discerning. She was about to open her mouth to tell the other ulaya a friendly greeting when she almost lost the fish. It flew up out of her mouth, and for a second, she postponed saying anything as she frantically jumped and grabbed at the fish till she managed to clap both paws onto it; holding onto it rather precariously. She blew a sigh of relief and looked up to where the other ulaya was. "Hail... who goes there? Friend or foe? or... maybe just someone who's hungry?"

Upon hearing the female's voice, he quickly looked behind him, wondering if there was someone else. Panicking he spun around before deciding to duck and take cover under his witch's hat.... not that it could truly cover more than the area on his head. It was more of a safety blanket for him. With his tail straight out in fear, he continually struggled to move his hat around, trying to find the safest place to position it on his head.
In his overreaction, he contemplated the female's entire question for a bit. Crawling around, with both paws still on his hat, he quietly stuttered out an answer. "T...th....the... name's.... Jjji...ji" Whimpering a bit he looked at her with the best sad eyes he could give.

Karis approached him carefully and slowly, always trying to not lose the fish she had just caught. She edged herself forward on her feet. For an animal who normall padded around on all fours, it might look rather amusing and awkward. She felt awkward. When she was finally close enough to the other ulaya, she tried to gently slide a toe under the brim to lift it up. "Whatcha hiding from?" She then turned her head to look around at what might have made him wanna hide. "You see something scary? You think there's enough room for me to hide under there too? Oh.. but what about my fish.. I dunno if I can get into a hiding spot without losing my fish."

Watching something left the brim of his hat, he gasped. Peeking his head out quickly, it was apparently his hiding plan didn't pan out so well. Upon listening the the grape hunter's non aggressive voice, he wrinkled his nose at the thought of having dead fish smell in his hat. "Mmm.... I'm hiding from the grape vine monster." he tried to explain, without having to admit he was trying to hide from her. "It's a giant bunches of grape vines that spring to life on a scorching hot summer day, looking for Ulaya to pray on!" he explained while flailing his front limbs against the ground. "But maybe your fish will fend it off... it doesn't like the smell of aquatic things." he added and wiggled his tail a little, as he spun a very silly, tall tale.

Karis listened keenly to his explanation. A vine monster! She's always heard of those! No way! Not here.... orz.. what was a girl to do. She then started to hurriedly eat her fish. She was a little embarrassed to just be stuffing fish in her mouth. Oh wait.. she was supposed to use it to defend them. She swished it around in her mouth to loosen the bone line. She put her paw on her tongue to pull out the spine of the fish. She held it up while chewing quickly as to not waste her perfectly good catch. Then, she held hte bones up in the air. She held it like a sword attempting to skewer the air. Hmm... Maybe not.. Doh! Well... hmmmm... She began to hop all around turning every which way looking for something to use. Oh, there was a branch! She ran and got it. Then, she dashed back to stand in front of the hat. "OK talking hat. I'll stand here ready to strike. You tell me if you see that monster coming from the other way. I'll.... hit him over the head....." then whispering to herself quietly 'or something like that.' It was important to sound brave at least. Right? Her taking all that flailing a little too seriously and thinking the poor thing was in need of someone to save and defend it.

Sniffing that fishy odor in the air, he twitched a little bit as he was under the safety of his hat. "Mmm.... talking hat doesn't think the grape vine monster will come here now. You smell of fish!" he exclaimed while still under his hat, trying to take the role of talking hat more seriously. "Talking hat says it's possible we'll be safe for a few hours under the scent of that smell.... that or we could cover ourselves in water. The monster would never be able to smell us in the water" he continued on, for he dearly wanted to splash in some water. It was getting hot under his hat after all.
Slowly rising from under his hat, he looked at the grape hunter with his bright orange eyes, and wibbled his lips a little before turning around and slowly trotting towards the cool allure of the water.

She turned her head and let her orange ear tuffs hang down as she glanced towards the water taking his word for the matter. For someone as old as her, she was ever as naive. She listened to the talking hat. "Oh. Hmm.... What's the matter with the smell of fish? Fish are nice and tasty." Still, surely, if this ulaya had seen or had knowledge of this grape vine monster. Surely, she best just abide by the existing wisdom at hand. Luckily for her, she didn't mind water much at all. She watched the body emerge from underneath the hat. "Ohhhhh... I see you there..." She followed the black ulaya towards the water. As she approached the water's edge, she stopped. She gasped and let out a rather entertained, "Oooooohhhhhhhhhh... YOU HAVE A TAIL! LOOK AT YOUR TAIL!!!!" She continued to watch it. She followed him by a foot or two behind. That tail!! ((in case you wanna link to this later on)) ---to be continued
